Could it be? Sega has finally listened to the clamor of their loyal Sonic fans? The hedgehog-loving publisher has now announced that they will be rolling out an all-new Sonic title for 2010 -- in 2D.

Under the name of "Project Needlemouse" (its working title), the new game will reportedly be an "all new 2D adventure built from the ground up." Accompanying the announcement is the release of a teaser trailer, which features a blue blur zipping through, scooping up golden rings.

Like this, but blurred.

Another clue that points to Sonic would be the sound effects and visual cues used, which are all obviously from the very first Sonic game, launched in 1991.

No word yet as to which platform "Project Needlemouse" will be coming to, but we do have the teaser trailer right here.

SEGA, don't not screw this up! I've waited like 15 years for a Sonic "4".

Now that's a very well executed trailer. If it's 2D then with luck it'll work well on every console, which has to be good news...

# It's from the Japanese name for Hedgehog.Nineball 2009-09-10 04:13
Which is "harinezumi". "Hari" means needle and "nezumi" means mouse.

To hell with Sonic (never could stand those games), bring back Streets of Rage damn you Sega. The second game in that series was the main reason I owned a Mega Drive (another being Gunstar Heroes so I was pleased to see that appear on PSN)

I'm excited. Sega needs to improve Sonic's image as a whole so they can make more, better games. Sonics always been my favorite video game mascot and it sucked going through the slump of the 3D screw ups (Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed's werewolf mode, Sonic the Hedgehog)
