Schizophrenic guy kills, says GTA told him to do it

Y'know, law books in the future will soon come to include the classic "GTA defense." Look at the sheer glut of criminal acts that perpetrators attribute to titles in Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series. It's practically become the next gen version of the insanity plea.

Over in London, a teenager loaded with "skunk weed", a high-strength kind of cannabis, murdered a 51-year old woman. Why? According to a report from ThisIsLondon.co.uk, Ezekiel Maxwell, a paranoid schizophrenic, committed the crime because "gangster voices" from a Grand Theft Auto game told him to do so.

Maxwell apparently believed that he was Carl Johnson, the main character in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The crime happened on September 5 last year, but we're guessing that the reason this has come to light now is due in part to the recent rash of "skunk"-related crime pieces in London papers. Of course, the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto IV may also be part of it, but that's kind of far-fetched.

We should also note that Maxwell had been smoking cannabis and "skunk" as well as taking cocaine since he was 14. He had also been diagnosed as a schizophrenic. Unless there's something wrong with your head in the first place, playing a violent videogame won't turn you into some kind of homicidal maniac.

» Drugs are to blame

Like it says, if theres nothing wrong with your head in the first place before you play these games, then theres no real problem, because all your marbles are in the right place and you've got a very solid grip on reality. If however you've been ruining yourself with drugs for years, then it only makes sense that things are going to affect you differently. Get rid of the drugs an you'll rarely see stories like this again. Since he was 14? No wonder hes schizophrenic. Drugs are for tossers with IQ's still in the single figures.

» Overseer is a moron

What are you a cop or politician?

Sickening how drugs are blamed for everything. Marijuana makes people less violent and is one of the mildest drugs there is.

He's a schizophrenic, and has a chronic mental disorder. While 14 is too young to use any drug, his parents are to blame for that. He likely uses drugs because of schizophrenia, but the schizophrenia led him to kill. That's one of the reasons how dumbasses in the USA got weed illegal in the first place. They said some guy with schizophrenia killed his family because he smoked weed. That's what led to Refer Madness, the most rediculous anti drug movie of all time. Schizophrenia is a disease you are born with, it isn't caused by drugs! What are you smoking?

It's 10 times better now. You're 10 times less likely to kill someone. Why don't you try it and see if you want to kill people and blame it on a videogame. Yeah, schizophrenia had NOTHING to do with it. Hearing voices is a symtom of schizophrenia, and leads people to do irrational things! Read a book!

Americans get screwed hard core on prescription drugs because of corruption. That's why many people go to Canada for medication, and lawmakers are even trying to stop that!

Prescription drugs kill far more people than illegal drugs ever did!

» my two cents

First off, marijuana certainly does alter cognitive functioning. However, it does not alter cognition in such a way that one's sense of right and wrong is impaired to the point that committing murder seems like an okay thing to do.

Secondly, to reply to the individual who posted that schizophrenics should refuse to listen to the voices that they hear. As someone who works with schizophrenics, I can say that this view is completely uninformed. Unlike other mental illnesses where the capacity to distinguish between reality and fantasy remains basically intact, individuals with severe schizophrenia simply have no ability to make the distinction. Even the concepts of "reality" and "fantasy" are virtually meaningless to them.

Thirdly, if we decide that games like GTA should be banned because they cause schizophrenics to commit crimes, we should also be banning the Bible. In my years of working with schizophrenics I have known many of them to do commit terrible crimes, including murder, but in most cases the schizophrenics explain that they were compelled to commit their crimes because the devil of the Bible told them to do so, not because of violent video games.

Just my two cents.

» You have no idea at all...

You don't know what it is like to not know the difference between real and not real. To not know what you are doing - where you have been - what you have done or why. You don't know anything. If you think that mental illness is simply a matter of not doing something and you're fine then you need some real education.

My comment about killing wasn't meant to be real.

But the way people treat mental illness is horrible.

You try and be Schizophrenic - you try and see what it is like when you have no control over yourself. The times when you do have control you're barely alive. And people think that you're a horrible person.

Let me tell you something. I will go to heaven - I am a good person. Despite what this illness has made me do or will make me do.

I fight harder then you can imagine - don't think that breaking the law has anything to do with wanting to. If someone breaks the law knowingly - then they should be jailed - if they do it unknowingly, like someone in a Psychotic state - then they should be given time in a mental institution. We aren't animals - we're human too.

in the early days it was made illegal to stop migration. Thats the simple truth.

Alcohol has a better chance of causing you long term harm. (alcoholism, liver failure)

» to Kristian and other people that suffer

I'm a bipolar with borderline personality disorder. I have a college degree and am working on a Master's as well. I work a job, pay for a car, and live life like everyone else. There are good days and there are bad days and there are really good days and really bad days. Just like with everyone out there. Now, that being said, there is a thing called medication. It is something that people with severe conditions (like me and you, Kristian) need to take, no matter how much we don't want to or don't feel we need to. The really bad days are enough to prove that medication is necessary for severe mental disorders. Going to therapy, taking medicine, and TRYING to improve are a responsibility and a requirement. When the person who is sick disposes of the truth of his/her responsibility to seek help and continue taking medicine and doing whatever else is necessary to remain healthy, then the fault is his/her own. I DO know what it is like, and I am here to say that there are NO excuses.

ps - weed doesn't make anyone violent, just stupid. Coke, E, Meth, and painkillers change a person. Weed makes people lazy, hungry, and tired. I never could understand where people even got the idea that weed could cause such things (have you ever seen "Reefer Madness" it is a hilarious video from the 50s or 60s that shows weed causing terrible reactions in people. It is so funny.). My mom once thought you could inject weed into your veins, boy I had a hayday with that one. It's like guns. Guns don't kill people, Stupid people WITH guns kill people. Same with weed and everything out there (like cars or cigarettes), I mean, really, think about it a bit. Anything can be used as an excuse for stupid life choices, the truth is that most of the cause is stupidity or seeking a way out of being responsible for self-chosen actions.
