SCEA won't get rid of PSP, PS2 online gaming servers |
Ó
Remember our previous report about Sony planning to axe online features on some Sony PSP and PS2 games? As it turns out, this change is only applicable to PS2 and PSP owners located in Europe at the moment. However, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) said that the company hasn't made an announcement confirming plans to make the same move for the mentioned PS2 and PSP games in the U.S."SCEA has made no announcements about shutting down the servers...Based on some of the game names it sounds like it is from another territory," a representative from SCEA said.
One of the names that was mentioned as not belonging to the U.S. market naming conventions was Everybody's Golf, whose North American franchise name is Hot Shots Golf.
But SCEA did admit on planning to get rid of online service for unspecified older titles. According to the SCEA spokesperson:
It does stand to reason that eventually servers for older titles may be shut down due to lack of participation in those titles as more and more gamers are switching to PS3 and newer content.
Well, there you have it. If you live in the U.S. and love your online PS2 content, your beloved interactive gaming is spared from the axe at the moment. But this also means that you shouldn't take online console gaming for granted; you'll never know when they decide to remove online features for certain games.
