Rumor confirmed, sort of: Sony Ericsson to make a PSP Phone

PSP Phone - Image 1While nothing's set in stone just yet, Sonic Ericsson could be on to something - namely, a PSP phone. A Phone PSP, gleaned from the recent patent you see thumbnailed to the right of this article. This could be the confirmation we've all been waiting for after rumors of it circulated the intarwebs a couple of months ago.

We're really not sure what to call it as the patent doesn't even give the actual gadget a name, but any way you slice it it's something that can probably take the cellphone gaming world by storm. Perhaps even turn the tables on Nintendo's iron grip on the handheld market.

If there's one thing you could cite that had always been holding cellphone gaming back, it's the controls. A numerical keypad simply cannot substitute reliably as a keypad, and would only result in cramped fingers and wrists.

However, if you look closely at the blueprints, you'll see that Sony Ericsson's pretty much taken care of that. A screen you'll be able to rotate is present so there are two sets of buttons on either end of the gadget, emulating the layout of Sony's handheld.

As for games, Sony doesn't even need to worry about that. If it IS actually a PSP and a cellphone in one, all the company has to do is make the phone compatible to standard PSP games, and you'll have a lineup that's going to be pretty hard to compete with.

In any case, updates about the PSP phone as we get them, so keep it locked right here for any and all developments!

if its true it will most likely be a GSM only.... and if thats the case wont sell too well...

I would not switch providers just to get one... unless if it is for all carriers... then i might be interested... but sony ericson has been on mostly GSM providers...

it looks BULKY and complicated... it would be better/easier to get VoIP for all countries on the current PSP.. or make a wireless "phone attachemnt"... like GPS/Camera

Doesn't look appealing at all. Please Sony, leave PSP as it is. If you wanna create a new version, add a touchscreen. But don't turn it into a phone!

# what about battery life?Guest 2007-06-01 06:56
first of all.. that thing looks huge.... i mean... why would i want an even BIGGER psp... with probably a smaller screen¬¬....

and.. if the psp alone have battery issues... i dont think this cellphone thing would help.... and... where the **** the UMD drive is suppose to be?

3rd thing.... homebrew.... it will be LIKE a psp... but i dont think it will have homebrew...

4th and more important...the price... its almost a fact that it will be expensive i think i'll better get an iphone and keep my "devhooked" 1.5FW psp ...

calm down dudes, that are only concept arts.

maybe this is the announced "lite" PSP.

i'm pretty sure they will change the design.

# ommmGuest 2007-06-01 08:20
you do know that that is not a problem as "hacking" your cellphone in order to change providers is 100% legal as of 2004? ok just making shure you know

this looks kinda cool im hopeing it does get more sleek in the final designs but if it will play psp games (mabie ps1 as well?) i would willingly buy it but i would still keep my 3.4oe psp in my other pocket just in case it cant be hacked like the psp can

and for all those saying its a brick its not the psp is actualy kinda light its not even 1 pound you dont even notice that your playing it even if you do so for 6+ hours i assume this will weigh about the same as the psp

AND REMEMBER THIS IS A PATTENTED CONCEPT DRAWING NOT A FINAL PRODUCT

jeez

The Ngage was such a success that this has got to be a winner!

There's no dimensions on the concept drawings, so how do you know it's going to be a brick? More likely the screen will be tiny and it will be the size of a regular 'phone.

@Ryan C. do you even put any thought into your articles? you seriously think a PSP phone would give the Nintendo DS a run for its money? IF Sony did release a PSP phone, it would not compete with the DS.

wow.. just wow.

well its true GSM does limit it... that means SIM card only, you wont be able to use verizon on this if its GSM. only carriers with sim cards like tmobile and cingular(at+t). so you will be able to change providers if the providers are GSM if they are not then you cant. i'd like to see you run verizon service on a gsm phone lol

it will be a huge device, it has to take umds if it is to be a PSP. look at the size of a umd and imagine it in your head (i know it may be hard for you) and think about all the moving parts involved in making it run. and god i hope you were being sarcastic on the success of the ngage

you got to be *****ing kidding me! A PSP phone? Well I think that Sony is trying to get the money of the customers in any way possible. But on the other hand Nintendo has the patent of a gameboy phone so if Sony launch to the market that PSP Phone Nintendo should get money too, well after a few demands.

I see no indication that this is a PSP in any way... the general shape of it is somewhat PSP like when it is folded.

Am I the first to notice the lack of a Cross Square Triangle Circle pad?!?

Ryan C. do you even put any thought into your articles? you seriously think a PSP phone would give the Nintendo DS a run for its money? IF Sony did release a PSP phone, it would not compete with the DS.

maybe to "dumb" it down for you what I'm saying is that Sony would to crazy to have it compete with the DS. You see, the DS is aimed at the mass market, EVERYONE. So is the PSP. A PSP phone would be for a targeted demographic.

couple things: for the nonbelivers, this has been patented, meaning that it is official, not announced.. but we could except it before q3 2008. 2nd, it was patented in japan so it will probally stay on the japan cdma network.. so we'll probally never see it.

I have to say I would like it better than the iphone, but that doesn't take all that much. Anyways, there are a few problems. The size for one, it's far thicker than the normal PSP, just based on the drawing, although there are no dimensions... Another thing is there is no home bar, which I thought was a pretty cool feature on the original. I don't think I even have to say anything about the button layout, because that would just be annoying. But it does have a lot of potential, and so does the price, what would we be looking at, $450, Sony sure has been trying to hike up their prices a lot.

That has GOT to be the biggest brick I have ever seen. And the button layout doesn't even make sense from that depiction. What's this, no analog nubs either? This rumor is 100% discredited by Sony. End of discussion.

the psp was released back in 2004, (japan), which means it was based off technology even older than that. The size could be shrunken a whole lot, and then all they need to do is slip in a part for the cell phone. Which wouldnt really increase the size

Think about it, the razr is super thin and half of it is screen. Then some of it is a processor and stuff, and finally a bit for actually transmitting signals. The psp as it is already has all the parts except for the transmitter.

the raidation will probally make your head explode with tumors

and it will cost about $2000000000

if i wanted a psp phone i would celotape a phone and a psp together.
