Retailers to Sony: drop PSP price or else

Retailers told Sony to drop PSP price - Image 1Gaming site 1UP is reporting that it was able to talk to a handful of retailers concerning the PSP2 rumor carousel that has been spinning round and round like crazy lately.

According to the retailers, the handheld had a dismal Fall last 2006 as hardware shipments were down 72%, with total US sales reaching only 10,000. The retailers added that they gave Sony an ultimatum: drop the price or they'll drop the system from their stores entirely.

PSP Senior Marketing Manager John Koller said that no such price drop was announced during the recently held Destination Playstation event in Phoenix, Arizona. And then out of nowhere, Koller hinted at a redesigned PSP unit, "I can at least say this much, the screen won't be changing in size." (As you are all aware, the existence of the next PlayStation Portable has been long denied by Sony then confirmed by Maguire, only to be denied again.)

Anyway, Koller continued and explained that Sony is in the process of reducing parts and potentially adjusting the size of the PSP all together. Well, if these reports are correct, Sony should work fast. An ultimatum, after all, is an ultimatum. We're pretty sure the company can't afford to lose invaluable shelf space at this point.

Thanks Waponez for the heads up!

QJ how about posting the entire transcript of the meetings and dialogs of the announcements in realtime?

Like this guy said this, this other guys said that... And I think is a waste of time attempting to draw conclusions from what it's being said. For instance "WTF PSP denied again??!!". No need to have this kinda surprise. Let's remain sober and follow the announcement WITHOUT ANY TYPE of pre-compiled judgements and conclusions. Know wha mean? Only post the TRASNCRIPT.

We can't do anything else other than wait patiently til the day PSP revision or PSP2 is released. Aiiight?

Cause Sony will say WTF they wanna say and any f time they feel like saying. Therefore no need to "WTF PSP/PSP2 YES/NO??!"

*wait for useless speculatory posts, useless conflicting opinions, useless hypothetical conclusions, petty fights about YES/NO, squabbles about touchscreen YES/NO*

peace

There is no way that Sony only sold 10,000 PSP units in 2006. Where is this data coming from?

About pulling off psps from the shelfs, I think sony will be better off by pulling the psp off, I mean Sony investing on the psp has been a failure and still is a failure, in fact, they still don't know how to make money off a system where most games stay on shelfs (this is not a conclusion reached by visual view of the shelfs, an employee of my nearest gamestop told me the psp is doing badly). I for one want Sony not only to give up on the psp which is a burden but also on the ps3 which is gonna be a bif failure, noone wants to buy it, sale charts prove it. When sony gives up on videogames will start seeing again those greatest and cheapest electronics they made (remember the walman, their televisions, before the playstations they made the best top electronics at the cheapest prices and my house was full of sony products, we even have surround stereo speakers from the late 80's which sound as good as modern speakers.

» The PSP...

is in no way a failure. It is the ONLY handheld to ever have a decent competition with Nintendo. I think it is time for you to take your fanboy self out of the PSP section and go play your pokemans..

» stfu metalspector

look at Neo-Geo Pocket, Atari Lynx, N-Gage... they all failed miserably to Nintendo until Sony made PSP. Without it instead of DS we would probably see a whole bunch more Game Boys with crappy graphics. And don't forget the Playstation line eventually stole the home console market from nintendo. (although too early to tell, PS3 might do the same). And i don't think no one wants to buy it considering it has been on the market for 2 years and still isn't dying. So just like GaveUpTommorrow said, go play Poke-your-mom or whatever that *****ty game is called(its been out of style for 7 years!)

Im glad that ppl use thier "inside" informers such as the guy at the "gamestop" store.... too funny.... Im going to trust the garbage man to tell me what good cuisine is too i think.... Sony has always been hush hush with everything they do,,, its funny how we want a new psp2 when they should be putting the money into better game designs to attract more ppl to the psp vrs. dumping on the die hard psp users that i for one LOVE mine and would almost step in the path of a car to save mine..... i think the psp is headed in the right direction some of the newer games released are getting sweeter and sweeter...... GO SONY.... w/e they do... :)

metalspector u can go ***** yourself, nintendo is amazing (i have a NES, N64 and Gamecube) but i have a PSP and can tell you that it's by far the only system ever to parallel or even exceed any of the groundbreaking achievements of nintendo (look at NES+SNES, then Sega came out with stuff and they were the same but NEVER as good, same thing with N64 vs. PSX)

Nintendo was successful in making handheld videogaming a success, and Sony built on their success and released a system that has capabilities FAR superior to that of Nintendo (I'm not talking game-wise because psp+ds are relatively similar in that area, but in other multimedia ie music, internet, video etc).

I can tell you that my psp is one of the greatest gifts I ever received, and to exclude the people that are yet to experience the joy I get out of my unit would be a huge mistake on Sony's part.

Nintendo will probably never lose it's hold on the handheld market, as sony will probably keep winning in the console area (just give them some time). I can't explain it but that is what I believe. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i respect that.

I don't care who sells more as long as I have fun, and all this fanboyism seems childish, people must realize that competition drives these companies to create bigger and better things, so we should all support them.

» The PSP is not a terrible portable!

But the PSP is not the best portable out there. The only reason the PSP is doing so badly is because there is not enough ORIGINAL GAMES OUT THERE! Don't get me wrong MGSPO is one of the most origonal games on the system, but it's not enough. Keep in mind that nintendo has been in the portable market since they made all of those game and watch toys, they know what people want. Hopefully when Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and God of War comes out the PSP will do better.

» Failure?

My original reason for going to qj.net was pspupdates.com. This pretty much means I'm into the homebrew scene, and to me, the PSP is the best way. I think playing FFVII, MAME and N64 ROMS, and my backed up UMD .iso's on one small SD is the best thing in the world. So a failure to other people is treasure to me. This is a system that will be long running past its lifespan.

I like my PSP so much I'm going to buy a spare one for when this one wears out, and I do believe it's the best portable available. DS sells more because parents buy portables for their kids and the DS is cheaper and more kid oriented.

» Games are the problem!

which good games are released for PSP?

I mean, special titles that is only worth to buy a PSP?

Look at the DS: I mean secial titles like Pokemon (ok, a lil bit kiddy, bad example), Super Mario DS, Yoshi's Island DS....

You see, all are a bit kiddy. The DS actually IS for kids, but the DS is nearly everywhere present, and the PSP.............

Let's say: not so much..

by Kingdraken - 2007-03-14 23:11
» What?

Stop thinking the Ds is for kids. Thats what preteens up till twenty four think untill they discover some sense of individuality. The comments earlier about it not being in style totally makes his opinion of video gaming a moot point just because being cool doesnt make a great game. period. Good example: Madden 07 blew SO hard. So very hard. It did VERY little to deviate from the formula, and will continue doing less and less because they have the money to market to phrat boys and casual gamers who like ea trax and pictures of the players then hardcore gameplay.

To futher the point of the ds argument. DQ9 is a ds exclusive. The FFXII RW DS only. FF I +2 came out for GBA for about 35 dollars where as they are going to be sold separetley for psp for 40 a pop. Plus mario kart multiplayer is more competitive and more played then MGS Potable ops. In fact, as it stands, psp online service is hardly totaling the numbers that play ds online even by percentages.

I own a psp for emulators because lets face it. Theres nothing else to play.

» Why is it a failure?

It's a failure because hardware is expensive for sony to produce and software isn't selling good, and to gaveuptomorrow, I'm not a fanboy of any of the 3 consoles or a pokemon fan, maybe a bit fan of computer games, but you all must know the psp is a failure since the hardware is expensive to make, software is hardly selling at all, and most third party developers don't wanna develop for the psp. The psp is good for homebrew and for it's multimedia features but the truth is that this is probably one of the less lucrative investments sony has done since the miniDVD's, it just doesn't make decent money to the company! DS may not be as good as the psp, yet the DS was a a success since hardware is cheap and software sells in huge amounts. Sony entered the portable game market hoping they would invest well but the Gamboy has.. the name GAMEBOY, that is huge publicity cause that's how most people call all portables and publicity means more buyers of the product and more support therefore attaining third party developers therefore selling software therefore being a success. Also, will anyone go and search in google "psp software sell charts" and compare it to the "hardware sale charts", you will see how little is sony actually gaining supporting the psp market.

» DS success rate

The only reason DS got so many sales is because Nintendo has dominated the Handheld market for a long time. N-gage, and all the others failed to compete against it, therefore, most people are going to automaticly think: I've always gone with nintendo, so I'm going to stay with them.| And buy a DS without ever knowing how cool a PSP can be. True, the hardware is expensive, not everybody can afford one is what I think. If it was the same price as a DS, I'm sure it would be saleing like hot cakes. And in my opinion, the games are fun. Hopefully we'll have those Final Fantasy games too(Well, not saying everybody likes final fantasy but it's pretty popular) and then it will boom. The PSP has great capabilities that no one realizes. Most people probably don't realize you can play music and movies on it. Because there are a lot of Nintendo fans at my school. I always hear them talking about Wii and whenever I mention I want a PS3 they go all out and say those are gay and mention what all the Wii can do. They're always saying: Wii can browse the web! You can download games with the Wii!| So I'm sure they have no clue about the other side since the PS3 can also do those things and more. People don't invest in something that is a competitor to what they invest in at the moment, so as a result, they have no clue what the other side is like and don't base their arguments off of facts from both sides. Anyway, I'm glad I bought my PSP and I will always be glad. It may have been expensive, but you have to work hard for something equally rewarding. That's what I think sony's consoles are to me, their games appeal to me a lot, and I hope they somehow revise the hardware so they don't loose like $200 per PS3. They're in a tight spot right now, but I will still support them even if they can't work themselves out of this hole.
