Ready At Dawn officially ends PSP development - Image 1Well, you probably saw this coming last month, but at least Ready at Dawn has now made it official (we thank Sunjon for the tip). The developer has announced that in light of God of War: Chains of Olympus' upcoming launch in Japan, they are now closing the book on their PSP dev plans. Quoting the studio's official post:

With Chains of Olympus going Gold in Japan (やったー!!ビッチズ!), weÂ’re now officially done with PSP development.

So today we sent all our devkits back and seeing all these boxes ready to be picked up definitely marks the end of an era here at Ready At Dawn.

CanÂ’t wait to show you guys what we have in storeÂ….

As some of you may recall, creative director Ru Weerasuriya previously discussed some of the reasons behind Ready at Dawn's decision. One reason was the studio's focus on two specific platforms - the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It's anybody's guess at this point regarding what they're up to, though we'll let you know if we receive any more updates regarding this matter.

It's been about four days in a row that I've seen your post in various stories (threads) that have nothing to do with said content.

I honestly think, by now, any interested parties would have already taken your link and run with it.

So again, please quit spamming.

# Pirating is the reason.kupomogli 2008-06-10 06:49
You say pirating isn't why, but remember the one thing QJ.net posted about how many copies of certain games were downloaded the most. Konami's Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles was downloaded from various sites like Rapidshare, Megauppload 50,000 times at the time that was released. The current sales of DXC in all regions is only 150,000. So 1/4 of the copies have been pirated. That's a big hit. The amount downloaded is sure to be more than 50,000 by now though.

No matter what anyone says though. People are going to still pirate, so the PSP isn't going to see as many games as it would if they legitimately bought some. They're hurting the system overall, so hurting themseles as well since they won't get as many great games as they would have.

I understand if you're a young kid though and you have no money. But if you're actually making money and you like a game, purchase it instead of leaving it on your Memory Stick for all of eternity.

This could either be bad, or good if they focuse on good PS3 games.

But you can't assume that all 50,000 would have bought it if they couldn't have pirated it. The vast majority probably wouldn't have.

I sure as hell wouldn't have bought it. Hell, I wouldn't have bought a PSP in the first place if I knew beforehand that I'd have to pay for the games.

# You can't honestly believe...TheCheat 2008-06-10 08:03
That the proportion of people who downloaded games (1/4) in this case, is equal to the number of sales lost. Many people download the game just because it is there, and many of those people may not even get into playing the game...or may play it for a few minutes and delete it as they don't like it. Many of the people who downloaded it may have just wanted to try it out before buying it, which may have led to a sale if they really liked. It isn't just cut and dry that if X amount of people downloaded a game, they company lost X amount of sales. Many people who download the game may have never had the money to purchase the game in the first place, and may had never planned on purchasing it in the first place....maybe they were just curious.

Before you call me a pirate though and put me down for somewhat defending piracy, realize that I own 112 PSP games (yes, UMD, case, and manual). I just know from experience that many people who have downloaded games will end up buying the game at one point or another. # downloads doesn't equal # of sales lost....the number isn't even close.

# I'll admit itskoomaeater 2008-06-10 08:15
I "pirate" games if that's the term you wish to use. I download a game (CCFFVII for example) a week to two weeks before it comes out. But on launch day, I'm still waiting outside Gamestop to pick up my reserve copy. Still in it's original plastic in the case where it will stay. Same with Patapon. If I download a game that I haven't heard of and like it, I buy it. Games I didn't download, Socom FTB2, and GoW because they have playable demo's. Games that don't have demo's for me to try before I buy, I'll "demo" the whole game and buy it if I like it. Plain and simple.

Also, the number who download a game, 1/4 of the sales supposedly, how many are actually going to buy it? I'll be generous and say 10%. That's 2.5% of the sales lost now. Now, how many are going to buy it used from Gamestop? About 1/4 probably. That leads to a very very minor loss in sales honestly.

Piracy is bad, Supporting game company's is good. Unfortunately, the world is full of good and bad people.

# have to agreeStinky_1 2008-06-10 10:42
I have to agree. I have downloaded games in the past, and on MANY occasions I say "glad I didnt pay for this garbage" and delete it never to play it again. If people didnt make JUNK games then I would not have to take this chance. Unfortunatly too many studios go for quantity rather than quality.

GoW is NOT one of those "junk" games though. It was amazing. Yet with how short it was I was also glad I got a chance to try it first.

The good news from all this is that the PS3 may actually get a game worth buying. So far I dont have one, simply because every time I go to buy it. I look for a game that is worth the cost of the system, and I cant find it. Maybe I am getting too old? I am having more fun with my $10 copy of My life as King on the wii, then ANY recent PSP or PS2 or PS3 or Xbox game of late!!

# ok, time for some logicDonciclon 2008-06-10 11:27
Ok, here's what i don't understand about this pirating crap. I am unbearably broke, i have no money to buy these games anyway. That being the case, they weren't going to profit off of me. Even more so, if i do decided to download a game that i wouldn't have bought anyways, they're not losing any money because it's not like i'm stealing a hard copy of the game. I'm not preventing them from making money. so that is my major grip with this pirating business. If developers don't want their games to get pirated THEN MAKE THEM WORTH BUYING DAMMIT!!!! I will admit that i downloaded final fantasy tactics to try it, and guess what....i was so impressed that i gave in my pennies and nickels to buy the game. It was an awesome port and deserved my hard earned change.

but there is multiple titles that you can play on the ps3. Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet + Clank, GT, MG4 to name a few. plus i have a couple dozen blurays that my wife and i enjoy. i have had a ps3 for a year now and paid full price, not after the price drop, and i don't reget it. and not to mention all the connectivity between my psp and ps3. believe me $399 is a good deal for what you are getting.

Why they'd abandon the PSP like that, but it makes you wonder what the cause is? Of course, the bottom line is, sales. GoW "sold" 730k and Daxter "sold" 1.74m. We have to remember, though, that both games ended up in various bundles where the game isn't sold individually, so it's actually tough to gauge what types of profits are made on those. Only a handful of PSP games (20 to be exact) have even sold 1m worldwide, so it's not difficult to see why they'd leave the market.

Stop that. Just google for Didier Malenfant (chef of Ready at Dawn) staement, and you will know, that he said, that they're not quitting because of piracy. They have sold 2.3 million of copies of Daxter and they belive, that they will beat that number with God of War. They are really happy about it. Just google for what he said if you don't believe me and stop shouting that it's because of piracy. This is hilarious. Stop blaming pirates, I bet that there is no person in here, which doesn't have any illegal file on their computer.

# FFTactics PSX > PSP portkupomogli 2008-06-12 08:05
Even with the few extra battles the PSP port carries, the original is better. All abilities are full speed, where as the PSP version has slowdown on some, and Square-Enix gave one of their moronic localizations where they changed literally every ability name "just to change it," not because the translation is any better.

If you don't already own the PSX version, then it was definitely a great purchase, because it's a great game regardless what system it's on.

If you haven't picked this one up yet, though. Pick up Wild ARMs XF. Just as good as FFTactics is as well as a whole hell of alot harder.
