Raph Koster leaves SOE |
Ó
Raph Koster, the chief creative officer of Sony Online Entertainment, has left SOE in an effort to pursue "interests outside of the company." Ralph Koster has been working at SOE for 6 years and helped make the popular Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG and it is disappointing to see someone of his level leave. Koster was also the lead designer behind the popular Ultima Online, which was very successful. Koster felt that creating these games was like creating art, and it is a passion of his. SOE has commented that: "Although his current interests take him into areas that don't match SOE's strategic goals, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors." Koster has not commented about this situation on his blog yet (he still says that he works at SOE according to his blog), but I'll be keeping a close eye on it to see if anything happens to come up. His blog outlines his personal opinions of the MMO world and it's nice to see someone like him sharing his opinions with others. Well, we too would like to wish Koster on his "future endeavors" as he leaves SOE in seek of his own dream(s)! 11 Jumps Custom firmware 5.50GEN-D now out

His name isn't Ralph, it is Raph. Why do people always screw this up?
Fixed, thanks for the correction. :)
When the NGE first hit there was a sizeable faction crowing over the 'de-Raphing' of Galaxies. That is, the removal of all those silly carebear elements like y'know, socialisation, complicated puzzles, multi-element story lines, the general sandbox 'feel'. Skill boxes and mix and match professions and all the cumbersome customisation that folks would do to make their SWG adventure THEIR adventure. What was being brought in was a faster, sleeker, linear quest driven, cookie cutter loaded FOTM fest. Wall to wall jedi, loads of level 90's hanging about going "Hey, I got a BE pet I bought but it won't grow..." "Yeah, you need a Creature handler" "A what? I didn't see that in the Iconic Professions thing?"... Bored folk, grinding out to an endgame so they can be viable in PvP and then finding out that the combat in SWG is so sub-par that it makes Tetris look aggressive. Doods, u got teh gayum wot u beatched 4! Hail your 1337 asses!
