GamesCom sure did not disappoint this week, although it did color our front page purple for the most part. No doubt about it, Sony ruled the spotlight this past week, and there's even no point saying otherwise. Fanboy or not, plain fact is that Sony was responsible for probably 80% of the activity on the Internet this week.
That's just how it is, one moment you're busy trying to be as discreet as possible with your secrets (and failing sorely at it), and the next, you're the big superstar with all the magnificent fireworks display heralding you as such. Others, meanwhile, bask in the relative shadow of the superstar, fiddling their thumbs and wishing it was their turn. But not in our blog, no sir! Here, everyone's a star, and we try to treat them all the same, so you bet you can find other big news in QJ for the 86th week of QuickJump QuickPeek!
The week may have been dominated by PS3 news but that doesn't mean the
QJ PSP blog went without. We saw a lot of updates this week about
upcoming releases for the Sony handheld, both from the West and from
the East. Most notably, another new official PSP firmware version was
spotted at the week's big event, GamesCom 2009.Link: PSP Weekend Warrior
The PSP homebrew community definitely stepped things up this week, releasing a slew of useful apps and enjoyable games for the PlayStation Portable. Perhaps most impressive, someone has once again taken on the task of coding a Nintendo DS emulator that runs on a PSP. A PSP that plays DS games? Who'da thunk it?

To call this week "PS3 Week" is no exaggeration. The PS3 Slim, a US$
100 price cut across the board, a new firmware, another Home update --
they may not have all been surprises, but Sony had a lot of
announcements at GamesCom for the PlayStation faithful. devs didn't
fall behind, either. PS3 headliners such as Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III also got on the frontpage with some beefy updates this week, leaving us with a rather lengthy PS3 Weekend Warrior.Link: PS3 Weekend Warrior
Microsoft was certainly pushed up the wall this past week as Sony took
over the spotlight at GamesCom in Cologne. We gotta give props where
credit is rightfully due, and that props I personally have to give to
Sony. Microsoft's presscon just wasn't as "oomph"-ish as it should have
been. Their "biggest" announcement: Fable III; their biggest newsmaker: the 54% failure rate. All in all, it wasn't a very good strategy/ PR week for Microsoft. Link: Xbox 360 Weekend Warrior
With Sony's major announcements back at GamesCom, news certainly has
been PS3-centric as of late, leaving the Nintendo block a little dry.
This week's batch got some help from the homebrew scene, especially
with the news that a new firmware update has been released to counter

Just games and apps news for this week folks. But if you're the type
who won't ever say no to good bits of info, then this week's apps might
interest you. Get all the info you'll need with a few pokes of your
iPhone through the Wikipedia Mobile app, or explore your world with
Discovery Channel with their app that'll let you stream the shows into
your iPhone. And if you want to know how you can't live without a super
toothbrush and a fancy blender, there's the Home Shopping Network app.adsf

Marvel won't be doing any more movie-based games -- "crappy" ones at that. You'd have to admire their resolve. How I wish we'd just get more developers like them just as committed to the cause, wouldn't you agree?

Is Square Enix partly to blame for the demise of developer GRIN? Reports surfaced this week pointing to Square Enix's unpaid debt to the folded dev as one of the culprits for causing the financial trouble. And what's this: a Final Fantasy-like game was in the works as well?

More devs news as Ninja Theory announced that they will be coming out with a new IP sometime next year for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. As early as now, they're also already lauding their partnership with Namco Bandai for the said new title. No idea what it's gonna be all about yet, though. But we'll know soon enough for sure.

Crytek takes out their crystal ball and foresees that the next console cycle will be in 2012, thus, they're already readying the next CryEngine, so they said. Not only that, they've also gone and released their Demo Video at the GC 2009.

Gamers, we are all targets yet again. This time, the CDC is saying that we're more depressed than usual. Great, more anti-social stereotypes for us.
