QJ's Most Underrated Games of the Year |
Ó
Most Underrated: Prince of Persia
Comments: Just to make a distinction "Underrated" != "Overlooked". The way I see it, underrated games are those which should have gotten better reviews and ratings than they did. Like Prince of Persia. Yes, it did get some quite glowing reviews for its graphics and art direction, but I thought the gameplay wasn't all that bad at all.
Isaac C:
Most Underrated: Grand Theft Auto IV
Comments: Because it deserves a 15/10.
Mabie A:
Most Underrated: World of Goo
Comments: World of Goo's gameplay and graphics are really impressive. Too bad it didn't get the media mileage it needed to catch people's attention. I do however applaud the indie devs, 2D Boy, for coming up with IP as innovative as this. Goes to show that you don't need complex gameplay and convoluted dramatic story lines in order to have fun.
Karl B:
Most Underrated: Valkyria Chronicles
Comments: Valkyria Chronicles - This strategy-slash-action-RPG title mostly went unappreciated when it hit North America, but in my opinion it's hands-down the best (and best-looking) RPG title the PS3 has so far.
Chris C:
Most Underrated: Crash Commando
Comments: It came out just a few weeks ago and it's simply the best multiplayer action game you'll find on PSN, as a matter of fact, it's in my top 10 for game of the year. I can't remember the last time I had as much fun with a game, fast frantic and wonderfully balanced, this is pure arcade fun. Unfortunately, no one's talking about it and few know anything about the game, I hear a demo's on the way, one can only hope because Crash Commando deserves a much wider audience.
Do yourself a favour, spend the 10 bucks and download Crash Commando, it's worth it.

deserves a 1000/10
You forgot to put a negative before that 1000.
I guess people don't like fun with their GTA's these days. As a GTA player since the first PC games (and generally as a DMA fan since Lemmings) I've always followed them. But they've replaced fun with physics in this new game.
Flying through windows on fast impacts? Not a good idea. Hope the DLC fixes bikes and makes them playable.
Most underrated game? N+. Hella addictive, and I wasn't too keen on the free PC version either. Just works better having it as a full game.
GTA IV? According to Gamerankings, it has an aggregate review average of over 97%, making it the second highest rated game of all time. To me, that makes the game OVERRATED.
I really liked playing GTA IV but I don't think it deserve a perfect score, having to pretend having fun with Roman and the others "friends" was lame.
It's still a great game but I think it could had been more fun.
That was bad. Boo.
The game is beautiful and fun to play! It is a bit pricy but compare to some other games I bought for PS3 at this price it is a steal!
having a high score makes a game overrated?
I agree 100%
This game might be one of the best multiplayer games I have played in a while. Its so much fun...
Certainly if going by the definition set forth by Gino D. And probably the definition that 95% of people use, yeah.
The fact of the matter is, if GTA IV were the first GTA ever released, everybody would love it, because it is amazing as its own game.
When you take the other GTAs out of the equation, IV really is one of the best games ever made
Because the old ones were more fun does not make the new one bad.
I personally am not a big GTA fan, say what you want. I just got PoP but my PS3 is on the fritz so I can't play it right now. Valkyria is a gorgeous game, but just like all SRPG/Tactics games and gets hard rather fast. Crash Commando can be a lot of fun with some friends, and for it's a really great deal.
this game is arcade-ishly fun and it doesn't require (very)high speed connection
GTA 4 underrated? it's the most advertised, talked about, and one of the best-selling games of all-time. wtf? and no, it doesn't deserve a 15/10, simply because it's the same old GTA with better graphics. besides, doesn't Rockstar have any other storyline on their heads besides crack, sex, cussing, and whatever gangsta ***** they know? besides, having voice actors imitating an italian/russian accent is stupid as hell. not convincing at all.
if i were to choose, based on unit sales, i'd say Valkyria Chronicles, Mirror's Edge (overshadowed by CoD5), Deadspace (before it came out, no one knew what it was), and NHL 09 (the only solid sports title from EA).
But I don't have the game yet D+
Really want to try it out.
I thing Brothers in arms : hells highway was sooooo underrated,
its an amazing game that deserves atleast 90/100, but ign gave it something around 70/100
I know this complaint could be filed against 6 out of 10 stories on pspupdates the past year, but what does this particular story have to do with the PSP? Where are the most underrated PSP games for the year?
Stop flooding everyone's RSS readers with so much non-PSP news.
GTA4 was a great game, but I thought the missions were too redundant. One of my all-time favorite games, but I thought it was overrated. But I think the only reason it got so many perfect scores was because it held the name GTA. Shakespeare can cram that "a rose by any other name" crap up his ass, if that game didn't have GTA written on the front of it, it wouldn't have gotten so many perfect scores.
look how bad the sales were...
this game gets brushed off as "childish" by immature idiots
The most underrated game is the Dreamcast
childish, no question. However, thats what makes it so fun in my opinion...
The Dreamcast is a system, but I totally agree with you. The Sega Dreamcast had a lot going for it, but maybe it was bad timing on Sega's part. I think Sega rushed to get the system out to gain market advantage over Nintendo and Sony and of course DVD drives at the time would have made the system cost way more than it did. It did have some great titles on it and it had exclusive rights to Sega's software division not to mention Capcom released an arcade perfect port of Marvel vs Capcom 2 (largely due to the fact that MvC2 was built on Sega's Naomi hardware which was more or less Dreamcast hardware in an arcade cabinet.) I still have my Dreamcast connected to my TV mainly for that reason.
Crash Commando is definitely an underrated/overlooked game. A downloadable demo should help sales. It's like taking some of the best elements of a FPS and mixing it in a side scrolling shooter/platformer. It's a very addicting and hillarious game to play and it's definitely a must have for gamers on the PSN.
TETRIS!
The Oregon Trail is better than all of em!!! Still brings back memories of poor Timmy catching Typhus......
lets be honest,we all miss those san andreas times
In that order. Definitely, although Dark Sector got decent reviews, Stranglehold really got the short end of the stick. A remarkable game, and the first in years that held my attention long enough to actually complete it.
Dark Sector is dark, gruesome, surprising, and atmospheric. And, the water effects are second to none.
They played it safe this time around. keep in mind that GTA4 is only the first NEW console entry to the series after the hot Coffee issues. I personally believe that Saints Row was a better game, although GTA4 had a better polish to it. The Missions were pretty much the same basic 10 that you unlocked with in the first 30 mins of the game. Everything after that was a blur of the same. I admit the game was great.. But I think it could have been better of Rockstar/Take2 grew a pair.
that game is one of the best ive played this year. definitely the best strategy rpg i have ever played. and maybe im just saying that because i don't like strategy rpgs that much but i have a lot of them and Valkyria Chronicles is the best. this game is under rated and over looked in north America.
you guys on break or what?
As the other members mentioned above, it's certainly one of the best games on PSN. The only way of letting people know about this game since there is no advertisement or anything for it is to get word out about it as much as you/we can. To think about it, a team of 5 pulled in just in time before the end of 2008 for the recognition.
Seriously guys, this is a HIGHLY recommended game to buy.
I lost a lot of sleep (not enough to have energy for work) because of this game.
MONSTER HUNTER SERIES... it always gets mediocre score in north america because they cant kill a "pink dragon" (kut-ku).
Movies are only as good as their prequels, same thing with video games. GTAIV doesn't live up to the older GTA games, people will always see it that way, so beat it. :/
i couldnt get enough of it when i played it on ps2. i bought it at launch and thought it was amazing at first. but i couldnt play it anymore shortly after getting to the second island. it just couldnt keep my attention like the other ones. WAY OVER RATED
I've put a lot of time into this game and if you pay close attention there are a lot of questionable underlying themes which made me wonder about the esrb rating. There's even some stuff that should be obvious, like that stage where you float down in the heart and those two things that just got married are clearly naked and doin' it.
Most underrated - HAZE
Shouldn't have gotten those bad reviews. People say it's bad even though they never played it. People should never trust bloody stupid biased reviews. it's a good game. On-line isn't very good but the story was fun to play, especially with co-op. Only one loading screen is a nice touch.
Most overrated - GTA 4
Don't understand why people like it. It's complete rubbish.
What the DC is tops at right now as a cheap option is a superb platform for emulation...
You can literally play every PS, GB, GBA, NES, SNES, MS, MD, Amiga, Lynx, Spectrum on it and I did hear that there was a Mame written for it too.
I have my one somewhere around and I had Linux installed on it, Dreamcasts rocked for messing around.
I bought GTAIV for the PC and I must admit that whilst some missions are repetitive, the physical environment on my high end water/peltier cooled i7 rig makes this game look the most amazing I have seen to date.
The downside for PC GTAIV is the skanky DRM that forces you to sign up to Live if you want to play, you can't play without an internet connection, if any of you guys from Rockstar North are reading this, greetz from an ol' Speccy coder in the good ol' days up in Newcastle but man that DRM sucks bad... and its about bloody time Bully came out on PC too you Newky drinking bunch of toerags.
Back on topic tho... What about Mines of Moria, talk about the expansion that never was or seems to be lol LotRO is an amazing MMORPG and MoM is superb in itself, the mines are awesome as is the new content and engine updates for what is in reality a grown up Warcraft (same engine.... better grafx than WoW).
Overrated tho I think WotLK has to win that title, the content is half finished, some classes like Feral Druids don't even have level 80 equipment released yet, the new profession is a cop out and it took me little time to level all my 70's to 80 making it somewhat boring... Boo to Blizzard who could of done better... Booo
Shaun white was rated from like 7 - 8.5 on most sites it is just so much fun i love it even though there are somethings that need to be worked out but i think it deserves like a 9
I haven't played Crash Commando, World of Goo or VC. PoP new look isn't hitting me, I liked the old style. But with an open mind, and knowing it has trophies, I'm willing to give it a shot. So I'm probably going to buy it in a few weeks.
Anyway I agree with the list of games though, at least some I know and played. :)
