Pwnage alert: GTA: VCS requires FW 2.81 - confirmed

A lot of us here are waiting anxiously for Rockstar Leeds' Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. And by the time you're reading this, it's already out there on the shelves. But a lot of you might start to wonder if it's going to be worth it because... [cue lightning in the background] it will require you to run firmware 2.81 on your PSP. Oh yes. (Oh noes.)

It has been confirmed by GTAPSP.com, and they've posted a list of little knick-knacks that you might want to know about the game. The other tidbits of info are pretty minor, especially compared to that first bullet-point which is nagging at our brains:

The game requires PSP firmware version 2.81 to play. An update is included on the game disc.
The city appears to be VERY similar to the original Vice City in terms of layout.
There is a pedal bicycle in the game and controls are said to be initial to San Andreas.
You'll start out on the "second island" from Vice City with access to areas like the airport, army base and downtown.
Vic can swim for over one minute before drowning.

Ultimate pwnage? Well, a lot of you guys must be so torn now, whether you're willing to upgrade your PSP (if it isn't yet) to 2.81 just to play the game. But think of it this way: it was bound to happen. We all saw it coming anyways. Now or never, folks... Maybe it's time to own up...

Didn't booster stop developing DevHook due to Sony's legal pressure on him, particularly 1 file that DevHook uses. And I also heard that he didn't realease the source code for it either...well for the emulating part, so I guess nobody will be able to carry on his work >.<

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, coz I'm a little cranky at the moment and might be typing giberish...

That might be true, but a dh test has circelled around the devs, ask Harleyg. He said that 2.82 (two point eighty-TWO) worked with this dh beta.

thankfully I have two psp's so this is not an issue for me. Can't wait to fly some heli's and ride the sea-do. I guess it sucks for everyone else. maybe the good ol' Dark one will be able to help the rest of yaz out.

Yes some of the newer games that require 2.8x do indeed work fine by just deleting the update folder. NFS-Carbon for example.

Unfortunately launching the umd requires 2.81.

Launching the dumped ISO (1.57 Go) is possible with devhook 0.46.

I know because I tried...

Other guys in France managed to get a copy of the game and can confirm :

As I have said previously, it would have been extremely foolish for Sony to release the biggest and most anticipated game on the Psp only requiring firmware 2.71.

I knew it would require 2.81 or more and im sure hardly anyone is surprised. I am also sure there will be a few noobs who will upgrade and then complain later on when the new version of Devhook comes out. To anyone saying GTA is more fun than homebrew, what ever happened to giving yourself more options. With patients we can have both but without you only have commercial games and nothing else.

Why some of you would actually want to play a pirated game is beyond me. The PSP is getting its ass beat in sales by the DS. Sony makes its money through software sales. By pirating games and not buying them, you're sending the PSP to an early demise...

Story and Characters

* GTA: Vice City Stories will take place in 1984, two years before the events that happened in GTA: Vice City. Because of this, it is very likely that Vice City main character Tommy Vercetti will not be making a cameo appearance in this game due to him still being in prison in Liberty City.

* There will be roughly 70 storyline missions in the game.

* The main character will be Victor Vance, the brother of Lance Vance, who was featured throughout GTA: Vice City when he as a drug dealing partner of Tommy Vercetti.

* Many sources, including imdb, suggest that Ving Rhames will be voicing Victor Vance though this is not yet confirmed. Additionally, Victor's voice in the trailer doesn't sound like Ving Rhames.

* Lance Vance will also be in the game, but won't be a playable main character.

* Victor is a 28 year old marine who has been kicked out of the army and is in peak physical condition whereas Lance is a drug addicted wreck.

* Victor and Lance have grown up poor and you start off in a trailer park - a new section in Vice City made for VCS.

* Victor and Lance buy a new mansion near the beginning of the game on starfish island.

* Phil Cassidy has been seen in the Vice City Stories trailer and load up titles.

* Vice City Stories will feature more characters, mostly being new to the series.

* The game's official box art has prompted speculation about further characters returning for the game. One of the game panels appears to feature Laura Shrub, Alex Shrub's wife, standing next to a car. Other panels possibly show Gonzalez and Big Mitch Baker returning though none of these characters have been offcially confirmed.

* An unnamed female character is seen holding a baby during the trailer for the game, marking the first time a child has ever appeared in a Grand Theft Auto title.

* Pedestrians on the street may comment on your success - Rockstar say it's all about having the people of Vice City (especially those close to you) recognise your power and control.

* Besides the Trailer Park Mafia, there is a new gang called the Cholos.

Gameplay

* Vic can fly helicopters.

* The developers promise a more intelligent targeting system, which avoids you from shooting at pedestrians during large enemy engagements.

* Bike handling has been overhauled and thus improved in the game.

* Due to mobile phones not being a common thing in 1984, Victor will be making use of a pager to receive text messages (This feature was also in GTA III).

* The presence of a silenced pistol and silenced SMG suggest that the game will feature stealth section as GTA: San Andreas did.

* Trip skips make a return (If you die or get busted a taxi will take you back to the location where you received the mission from).

* The games controls are the same as Liberty City Stories.

* The combat system has more depth to it than any other Grand Theft Auto game. The targeting mechanic has been tweaked, but the biggest change has been to unarmed combat - you can now perform grappling moves and throws, you can get on top of an opponent on the ground for ground domination, and more.

* Major events, like hurricanes, may be part of the storyline.

* A brand new mini game based around Golf will be included. Apparently one mission involves trying to beat Gonzales (a returning character from GTA Vice City) at the game. You control everything with a single button - tap it to start the meter in motion, again to stop it when you reach the desired power level and again to set the accuracy of your shot. Once complete you can return to Leaf Links to play a score based golf mini-game.

* As initially revealed by German magazine "Play the Playstation", the game will feature a new game mode called empire building, further elaborated on below.

The gtavcs umd has 2.71 encryption. yes, it will play on our beloved homebrew friendly PSP.

From here on out I refuse to update my firmware to legitimate updates unless sony go open regarding homebrew.

I will never update to 2.8x and I won't even update to 3.xx as I am confident in time the features of the those firmwares will be hacked.

I mean this happened with the first GTA on PSP requiring the 2.0 firmware update. And what did it spark? A freaking firmware war!!! It started the mphgameloader and runumd and later on the amazing thing we now love called DevHook. So people people, don't worry.

As for DS being more "innovative," don't even get me started on that. I've seen the so called "amazing" DS games...if Nintendo Dogs, Brain Age, Disney games and Mario games are your thing, then that's fine...but I'll stick with my 21 bought PSP games, all which are better than even the best DS games available. The torrents that everyone keeps mentioning are fake and contain viruses. I was going to try to get a torrent early before my preorder got here to see if it worked with devhook or not. But all the comments about the torrents that I have found (3 total) say they are fake and contain viruses so if you are downloading one now stop. I'm just trying to help out, the ones I am talking about is one rar file that's about 647mb. I guess I will just wait for mine to get here and rip my own iso to see if it works. Also as others have said just because it has 2.81 on the UMD does not mean that it needs that to play it.

DS is currently on top because its cheaper, and why is it cheaper? - because beside the touch screen (like I care!!), everything that come with it just s**ks!! I like gta like any real red blooded hardcore gamer but I won't make the mistake to upgrade anymore unless something better comes out like the Playstation emulator or at least until I get a 60gig PS3, as long as the features are there when I get it. I started with a 1.5v PSP and now it is upgraded to a 2.6v. I upgraded for Liberty City Stories and sometimes I wish I didn't. Anyway you might be able to pick up a PS2 version of Vice City Stories for $20 like they did for LCS, that is if they don't ditch the PS2 when PS3 is released.

Well I can get this to work on 2.71 SE-B as an ISO form so If you have the game you can just copy it to ISo and change the FW files that are 2.81 to 2.71 and delete the UPDATE folder as well. Doesn't seem to be FW dependant on anything specific, like GTA:LCS was. If you need help changing the files Ill make a tut on anotehr site since this site won't let you talk about ISOs even though your gonna need to own the game to do this.

just to let every1 know, i've just dwnloded GTA VCS (1.6GB ISO/915meg CSO) and it works on Devhook fw v2.71.

i am running Dark_Alex's 0.46 Chaos Zero Devhook emulating v2.71 and this works perfectly with GTA VCS (watching intro @ the moment). : ) : ) : ) : ) : ) : )

i'm not doing anything illegal as i am going to purchase the game as soon as it comes out - just checking if it will work on v2.71 emulated PSP.

no point in buying a game & then later realising that it wont work & u'll have 2 upgrade from the golden firmware.

That's just what people repeat. Do the research. The PSP has more higher rated games than the DS. Almost double by IGN's ratings, and if you're going by an average of all game publications, the PSP still outnumbers the DS in terms of games rated 8.0 or higher...

I think they mean, that to run the UMD then you need to upgrade to 2.81.

Vice City Stories is NOT a 2.81 game. it's a 2.71 game, using 2.71 PRX's, on a UMD that requires 2.81 unnecessarily except because sony wants everyone to upgrade. if you buy the game and rip it (or otherwise get the iso but i suggest paying for it even though torrents work fine) and use devhook .46 with 2.71 installed through devhook, then load the iso through the devhook launcher from 1.5, your psp will play VCS perfectly. not to mention, it's like 10x faster to play a game off the memory stick rather than the UMD drive simply because the UMD drive is TERRIBLY slow. ape escape is a great load time example, it's the first game i bought and i couldn't stand how slow it loaded, but i ripped it and put it on the pro duo and all the load problems were gone. going from island to island in VCS is almost instant in .iso format.

UMD is DEAD!
