PlayStation Phone designDo you remember the Playstation Phone that we featured around a month ago? Accordingly, Sony Ericsson is planning to create a device that combines communication and gaming functions alike. After that, no more word were further heard regarding the project. So, we could only imagine the Japanese-Swedish conglomerate's surprise when the PSPhone appears in one of their contests.

As part of their 5th year anniversary celebration, Sony Ericsson hosted a Concept Phone Design Competition. Participants are students of various Chinese universities and colleges. The contest was welcomed well and designs came in droves and various concepts. Some look normal enough, while the others seem to have come from an advance civilization from far away.

Interestingly though, a rather familiar-looking diagram appeared: the rumored PlayStation Phone! This specific render features a UMD slot and a somewhat DS-inspired flip top. Also, the diagram from whoever that brilliant Chinese student was, appear slightly smaller but thicker than the PSP itself.

We think the design looks promising enough. We wonder what you guys think and if this does not cost too much, are you willing to get one?

by - 2006-10-09 15:20:49
Is he crazy??? Thicker than the PSP???

He bought an N-Gage, didn't he...
by - 2006-10-09 15:26:01
ZOMG!

If they are gonna do a redesign they better at least add a second joy stick! and N-gage was the gey, this would at least have decent gaming ablities, as for the phone part, that could be lacking.
by - 2006-10-09 15:26:21
the idea

is good and bad like a psp aint big enough now i gat a phone on it:P and i'd never bring my psp anywere outside unless i was on vacation (cause i liv in the ghetto) so a psp phone seems illogical
by - 2006-10-09 15:31:42
SWEEET

Awesome, but kinda looks weird; the mini psp and phone mix.
by - 2006-10-09 15:39:18
YAY! Power to Sweden!

I'm gonna buy it, especially since it will add a second screen and possibly a touchscreen function as well. And buy the way, Sony Ericsson is my favourite cellphone brand. Even tho my T610 is in a wierd half-broken state...
by - 2006-10-09 15:52:03
Best

im going to create a four " by 3" device with a touchscreen with computer gaming capabilities, internet connection keyboard support, umd, every memory stick device imagineable, .2 inches thick, cd support, and did i mention keyboard support? Then EVERYONE will me happy, oh and the battery lasts for a month and charges in three seconds
by - 2006-10-09 15:57:15

by $s2 - 2006-10-09 16:19:14

by lansingone - 2006-10-09 16:40:39
@11

no joke somone is making a battery that charges in 3 seconds, im not sure about lasting a month but it lasts longer than other batterys, i think a psp sized one would last about 5 hours longer than the current one
by Sr_Moska - 2006-10-09 17:32:56
I have to buy the whole PSP again!?

that's bull*****, I already have my PSP so ***** off! I heard a Ngage eco
by - 2006-10-09 17:36:05
BEST

yeah i actually have heard of that new battery that is somehow related to a resistor and can be made into fabrics or the shell of the device itself, and @13 more like 4.4 billion, duh but my company only charges a hundred bucks because were a negative non profit company..yeah... i think... ...
by - 2006-10-09 17:42:26
Awesome

I would definatly get a PSP Phone if it comes out. It would be so cool for my PSP to be a cell phone!
by - 2006-10-09 18:25:05
sweet

they r cool but many existing ideas... in korewa there is those flip fl;ip ones... but the psp looking one has no umd cover just a slit... there will be dust getting in.
by - 2006-10-09 19:38:18

by - 2006-10-09 20:49:31
@22

If you look carefully at the pictures you can notice that it is a totally different gadget from your normal psp, except for the buttons you use to play your game
by - 2006-10-09 21:38:35
If PSP is a flop...

If PSP is a flop... this device would be a flip flop... as in a second flop around. Cell phones should stick with them java apps and that's it.
by - 2006-10-09 23:35:19
oh dang

oh dang. this thing'd be humongo. a phone the size of a psp? no thanks i'd rather just use my cell phone. its a lot smaller, a lot lighter, and if somebody steals it i'm not loosing a psp AND a cellphone.
by - 2006-10-10 01:36:23
Yeah, it's gonna flop.

The N-gage flopped, and so will this if it's ever produced. There is no advantage of having an enormous PSP-phone for playing and calling with, they don't get along together. PSP is for playing, phones for calling. Combining two successful yet completely different nisches will result in one failure. Just look at N-Gage. But still, thanks for the "YAY! Power to Sweden!" thing! :) Just for fun, do you all think it's the tiny country squeezed in between France, Germany, Austria and Italy? So wrong! It's between Finland and Norway. (Hope noone thinks anything else...) Cool news though, even if it's a flopper.
by - 2006-10-10 06:14:33
Why not an attachment?

Looks nice and all, but unless it can hold a ton more memory than the current PSP, then it's not much of an improvement. Apple can make a 30G iPod, yet Sony still relies on their extrememly over priced memory sticks. I hate that...it almost makes apple look good :P...lol.
by - 2006-10-10 07:23:00
Therrible

It looks AWFUL!!! I hate those pictures... I hope psp 2 is not going to be like this.
by - 2006-10-10 10:24:13
PhotoShoped T300

This is just a PhotoShoped SE T300 (wich is a crap phone btw.)
by - 2006-10-10 10:27:28
looks like

it looks like a DS to me whats the bottom screen for? maybe instead of a bottom screen there should be a keyboard, then i would definately buy it. you could use the keyboard for e-mail, or to communicate during online play.
by - 2006-10-10 11:54:40
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Seriously hu is going to go around with a phone the size of a psp ? its a retarded idea
by - 2006-10-10 14:42:31
dumb

this is dumb 1st its thicker than the psp itself 2nd psps battery lif is short, imagine how short it will be with this 3rd it looks like they tried to copy the ds 4th if sony were to do this, imagine how much money it would be and 5th why would you want a phone psp you can just get a phone and a psp this is not retarded #31..... its super retarded

SE Insider

Hey, Whats up peeps who were interestedin the Sony Ericsson Gaming phone. First off I haave to say the guys in Sweden got it going on. But you all know this is a unofficial design super-emposing the idea. Already one of Sony Ericsson's phone the (W900i) has a nVidia chip. According to the inside news-letter that the branched employes recieved 2 weeks ago. This device isn't and sort of psp but it taking on the innovations of portable gaming. No UMD slot, no XMB, nothing of that nature. This will be further on the Sony Ericsson side of things then the Playstation side. But will use some assitance from playstations core developers to take care of the gaming side of things. Cheers, Davo, Uk
by - 2006-10-10 19:03:05
i like the idea as long as it is in prepaid also

thats the best idea ever
by - 2006-10-10 20:06:53
lol@35

but seriously, direct conntection to the internet through the phone in ev-do mode at 2.4 Mbps. no longer a need for ad-hoc at all. text messaging and e-mail support. not to mention prepaid long distance calls during off-peak time. full backward compatibility (the sony way). full homebrew support. so it "fails", i'm happy with my psp, i'd get one of those. (if they ever were to exist, actually, anyone really think thats real?? and i've read what you all said.....h-ha)

@SE Insider

@SE Insider: Why are you trying this concept? Nokia failed bitterly with NGage, and Sony already made a great portable entertainment system. Can you find any advantage in having a PSPphone instead of a psp + a phone? Peeps have already stated the disadvantages that are obvious, what is you response? Why would we get one of these?
