PSP vs. Nintendo DS - Closest Race Since SNES vs. Genesis |
Listed in: News Tags:
Ó
Those who grew up with a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis might remember
the era as the time of the best video games ever made. There was a
reason for that - the competition. Nintendo and Sega were neck and neck in
the race for console supremacy, and to edge each other out they were
forced to create the best games they could. Now we're looking at another great race. The PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS are even closer than the SNES and Genesis were in North America. The NPD has just recently released their sales data and the numbers of units Sony and Nintendo sold in March are astonishingly close. Not only is this a fight between the DS and PSP, the Game Boy Advance is taking a sizable chunk as well. The DS sold 184,000 units while the PSP just barely edged it out with 186,000 units. The GBA edged them both out by selling 201,000.
March was also a great example of how the close race makes for great game releases. Metroid Prime Hunters, Tetris DS, and Super Princess Peach all saw a release for the DS. The PSP had one of its best months with Daxter, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, and Mega Man: Powered Up. Of course, the biggest game released wasn't on the handheld at all. The PS2 got a little something we call Kingdom Hearts 2 (sold over 614,000 copies).
Keep in mind that this is the American battle. The PSP's still screwed in Japan where the DS sells around 800,000 monthly with the PSP selling around 120,000 monthly and GBA reaching maybe 50,000. Funny how such a small country buys so much more.
US Monthly Sales (March 2006) - Rounded
PlayStation 2: 273,000 [39,251,931]
Game Boy Advance: 201,000 [37,286,846]
Xbox 360: 192,000 [1,209,343]
PlayStation Portable: 186,000 [4,170,434]
Nintendo DS: 184,000 [4,308,665]
Xbox: 83,000 [15,698,997]
Gamecube: 63,000 [12,008,291]

It's not funny...in Japan lives more than 100 million... it's a big market.

Also, for the love of all that is chocolatey, DS and PSP fanboys don't start bickering.

Let's hope Sony can lock down some MUST HAVE titles with firmware 3.0 + allow homebrew + full resolution MPEG compression too. This is the only way Sony can win back the market share they deserve with such an amazing machine that has SO MUCH potenial.
C'mon Sony - do it. DO IT. DOOO ITTT.

Then we have Pokemon Diamond/Pearl.

but then i see games like Loco Roco.
Will it offend some (ie, most) gamers with its cutesy design? Probably.
Will it play like a dream? Who knows.
Is it something no one has ever seen before? The answer to THIS question is a most resounding yes.
Yeah, most people will glance it over but anyone who's ever found something to love in game's that were a little off the wall ( Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe and Warioware, I'm staring in your direction ) Knows that there's something engrossing with experiencing games in a way you never dreamed possible.
Not that sony should focus on these type of innovative games entirely either. They should just know, if they dont offer something that nintendo cant aside from graphics and a shoddy analog stick (Side note: Guess what? DS is getting web browsing too, suckas. Add a stylus to that scenario and the psp alternative soon becomes horribly obsolete), theyre *****ed.
The End.,

If that was true, then every single console except the Xbox's would be counted as the japanese market...

We're now talking about two devices (PSP and NDS) whose performance are almost night and day different... Go to gamespot or any video game website, look up Ridge Racer on both the PSP and the NDS and then think about it.... or... any supposedly "extreme pushing grapic" on the respective console and compare them.
The pricing is also very different... one debut at $250 while the other is at $150. The NDS is 40% cheaper than the PSP. Please don't tell me price doesn't affect decision choice.(which in turn, affects sales figures) I'm sure many people (or kids) who can only shell out for an NDS would still have a sour taste of desire for the other machine.
The fact that the PSP still out sell the NDS by a small margine shows that the demand and the favor toward the PSP is MUCH higher than that of NDS... what if the PSP is priced at $150 as well? Hot cakes... that's what the PSP is... and NDS would then look like paper weight. Despite the 40% MORE in price, it is still out selling the NDS?
I may sound like PSP biased... maybe I am. Take my statements with a grain of salt if you will, but facts are facts... as biased as one can be, he can't alter truth.
Which brings me to the next point. These sort of article referencing the sales figures without informing the reader the level of difference is kinda biased to the weaker product in itself... I'm honestly sick of seeing sales figure comparision and almost all articles of this nature neglect completely the two points I just made. Quit pitting two very different machines together in the sales figure arena...
Just stop w/ the sales referencing... and if you must, inform the reader...

The PSP is truly so much better then that ugly DS handheld.
I dont care about gimmicks, sweet mario characters, having 2 screens, lots kiddie games...
I care about top quality LCD widescreen, slim design, COOL 3D action games, 480x272 video and mp3 playback!
Now that I think of it.... YOU REALLY CANT COMPARE THE PSP TO THE DS!
The PSP is in a whole different league of its own.. its more advanced, more aimed towards Action/FPS/Racing gamers..
If you care about Mario and that cute stuff, buy a DS.. but if you are a gamer with higher expectations and more demands... definitely go for PSP!
Just my 2cents...

Every day I look at PSP news hoping for a really cool breakthrough PSP game and every day it's the same "oh boy, another 3d shooter/adventure game" or "whoopee another racing game." Loco Roco is the only game I'm looking forward to. Got a chance to play it and the minute I did so I thought "THIS is what developers should be doing."
PSP is a beautiful and powerful system, but to be perfectly honest the only reason I pick mine up is to play homebrew. What's wrong with that picture?

In Europe and the U.S., it's still something primarily for boys, and so the PSP does much better. But there are definitely different tastes. Currently, the PSP gets better games, ranking wise, certainly in the U.S. and Europe - just look at the Gamespot all review pages and compare the ratings and games for DS and PSP. There are more 8+ games for PSP (last time I checked about 27 vs 16) and the average ranking is also higher for PSP games.
There's a big cultural divide between Japan and the rest of the world in that respect, and it will take a while before it equals out. Right now though, the DS and PSP sales make this divide very clear to see, which is interesting in its own right.
The whole point here is that women are late in catching up on games in the West. From the looks of it, those that drop in, generally grow into it through their boyfriends, and therefor will develop tastes initially more akin to the guys.
Men and Woman are also a little more alike in the West, less of a sexual divide. In Japan, there are whole gaming franchises that are the equivalent of soap-opera and teen magazines, which never make it to the West.
It will be interesting to see how, if, and when this changes. The DS may play a big part in this, but when? It could happen after the DS has been released, even. Currently, iPod is the technological trend that has attracted women, so who knows what will happen next.

?mature/violent? games. On the other hand. How can you not want to play nintendos first party games. I mean I have played princess peach as much as i have played socom here lately. :) And for the RPG fans out there. I mean psp will get major love with there own rpgs but the ds in time will rule supream with a flood of rpgs you cant imagine. I think in fact that alot of ds owners putting down the psp , really want one deep down. and turn that around for alot of psp owners that hark on the ds. You know you want to play the new mario and zelda comming out. You know you do. If you have a ds go get a psp when you can afford it. Yuou wont regret it. Games will only get better. If you have a psp, go get a ds when you can affort it. Yuu wont regret it. Games will only get better. You guys cant expect every single game to be one you would play. I think both systems have crap games that get thrown into the bunch. anywho!!!
I have both, play both, love both.

The PSP has the ability to make user of a 333 MHz processor, using it translates to better and smoother running games. Worried about battery life? Just release a higher capacity battery. People will buy it.
The memory stick video has the ability to play at full resolution, please allow it. One of the reasons why UMD movies failed to sell was because people were standoffish over the fact that movies they already owned and copied to memory sticks always played at a lower resolution. Since UMD movie sales are poor at the moment allowing full resolution video from the memory stick on the PSP would not actually hurt at this point.
There is a homebrew community that is creating some decent software for the PSP (eg. chat/IRC, using a file manager, wirelessly accessing and transferring files between a PC and the PSP, etc.), I am certain that they would supply the source code to these programs which can then be bug tested and fixed, and then encrypted to be a part of the next firmware update. After all, those who do not pirate games but still use homebrew mainly do so because it provides features they desire. You have already incorporated several features that have become available in homebrew and that is a good start, so just work a bit harder on this and you will soon have many people willingly leaving the homebrew scene. I also still believe that full flash player game support should be available in the next firmware update instead of limited compatibility with flash since it will not allow piracy or games that come close to commercial PSP games but will satisfy people who enjoy homebrew. This will definitely end the headaches caused by this whole "SONY vs Homebrew" crap.
Instead of releasing PS1 games online, I would like to suggest utilizing the full capacity of the UMD's storage space and releasing PS1 game packs consisting of several games. First of all, this will prevent the PS1 memory stick games you are intending to release from being pirated. Since not everybody will have a credit card to purchase and download these games with this will also give gamers more chances to purchase them. This would also justify the amount of storage space on the UMDs and ensure that people stop complaining that it is not being utilized. I would pay $100 for a UMD if it meant paying only $10 to $20 for each included game.
I will immediately e-mail what I typed here to SONY, I doubt that SONY has the time to read through all comment sections and forums but if people e-mail SONY and tell this company what they want and they receive enough requests for a certain feature then they would definitely have to address this request just to stop their in box from being flooded.
But then, I suppose that most people will not bother to e-mail SONY and will instead choose to whine and moan here about stuff they want like little babies. We are better than this. After all, how do we expect any manufacturer or developer to suit opur needs if we do not tell them what our needs are?

Screen ghosting, unprotected screen, fingerprints, and UMD movies are big problems with those things.

In overall handheld sales, Nintendo is still winning big, Sony isn't that close at beng 1st place yet, sorry article writer, DO YOUR RESEARCH!

#23: In my opinion, pricing is a crutch. To remain competitive, you need a competitive price. Nintendo sacrificed graphics and sound for an affordable price. Sony sacrificed an affordable price for graphics and sound. If you say, "it's because of the price" others can easily say "it's because of the power" Really. The GCN launched at $300 Canadian while the PS2 and Xbox launched at $450. That did not help. Pricing is all part of a company's strategy.
#30: The problem with Europe is that it's very hard for me to find stats. There is no unified sales tracking service like there is in the USA and Japan. If you want some indications though, the DS launched I think 8 months before the PSP. Nintendogs has sold better in Europe than Japan and the USA. I know that the DS is ahead of the PSP in Europe, but I'm not sure by exactly how much.

''It is hard for Japanese developers to justify outlaying a lot of money on PSP development when so many people are determined to pirate the system''
Just as many people are determined to pirate the DS. Piracy Protection that was quietly put in place in newer models of DS hardware were very quickly circumvented. Even the new DS Lite can run homebrew and of course potentially run downloaded games. We seem to hear more about Psp piracy but the DS has just as much, if not more.

The thing that i would say IMO is that the gamming industry has become a little stale over the years. The only real improovements to game play (excluding eye toy n socom) that there has been between the PS1 and the PS2 is better graphics and more responsive game play. (trust me after playing SSX try playing Cool Boarders 4 from the PS1 and you will get what i mean.). Now I am not saying that there is anything wrong with this in the end but it does mean for me that games have a lot shorter life span as you are just playing the same sort of thing over n over.
Now when it comes to the PSP, i own 6 games. 4 of these are ports of games from the PS2. 1 is a port of an amiga game (lemmings) and 1 is to my knowledge a totaly original game (grip shift). Out of all these games I think the one I will end up playing for the longest time will be lemmings, possibly because it was one of the first games i ever got into as a child but also posibly because i find it to be the most original game out there as there really isnt anything else like it.
The PSP to me feels very much like a little brother of the PS2. I feel at the moment Sony just want to make it a portable playstation 2 rather than something new and refreshing. I think in the end sony and other publishers are putting these games onto the PSP because they know that they are winners and are going to sell. Simply because they have been proven to sell over n over. The thing is, they seem scared to take a chance on different and new ideas just incase they do not work and loose lots of money. If you look at the PS2 the inervative games like Eye Toy only started being released after the PS2 had made backl all of its production costs and so sony could take a few more risks.
Now this battle with nintendo could lead to two things. Firstly Sony might realise that putting different games out there will intise more gamers. Secondly it might make sonyt even more worried about loosing and so stick to there guns even more until they know they have room to breathe.
I think in the short term what i'm interested in seeing is more old old ports. Ie like lemmings originaly from the Amiga. I heard that James Pond was going to be released on the PSP and that sounds great to me. It was such a classic game and I'd love to be able to play it again.
In the long run though, and this goes for the entire gaming industry, i think we need to start seeing new ideas surface, otherwise people will get alienated by boring re hashes of generation before games.
wow this was long, sorry lol.

Many people said those two handhelds are completly diffrent. One is purely for gaming - NDS and PSP is for multimedia and gaming.
Becouse we cant have all PSP have connected two ideas - gaming and multimedia. That affected but not in 100% PSP is not perfect for gaming. NDS doesn't have multimedia functions so its ideal for gaming.
Both consoles are great in diffrent way. And its impossible to say what is better becouse i could say PSP plays MP3's but someone will say NDS is cheaper or something like that.
We write thousands of comments what is better and we want to convince PSP or NDS is better.
Best solution: BUY BOTH CONSOLES - i know most of people cant afford it, neither do i.
Both consoles are popular.
I own PSP and im pleased of it. But if i had money i would buy NDS.

The DS has some decent games, such as Mario Kart, Pheonix Wright, Animal Crossing, and eventually Zelda.
For both, some of the games that are put out on these handhelds put up a similar reflection to that of there Console counterparts. Example Mario Kart 64 = Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 = Super Mario DS, Socom = Socom PSP. I dont mean in any way diss either of these systems being that i own both myself.
To get to the point that the PSP is going to be pirated, it already has. Download the games over a torrent sysytem and use a UMD emualtor along with MPH Game Loader. The DS has also been pirated with the M3 Adapter. The M3 Adapter allows the user to play GBA and DS titles that have been downloaded.

Sorry if i seem a bit zealous. I can only say that of all the psp games out there (ive tried em all), theres not one with the type of flair that even one first party ds game. You could almost pick ANY game aside from the shameless super mario 64 port that was only done to prove the ds could handle/improve on 64 games. This was the only game on the ds to follow Sony's whole marketting procedure of "Resell our proven console games on the small screen with little to no changes applied" and look how well it worked for them. Funny that Mario 64 is a commonly used example by psp-fan boys. Thats because its the only good example to support their arguments but, in the end, fails for the same reasons almost every psp title will fail. Shoddy Controls (i dont care what anyone says, that little analog "nub" sucks my balls off) and lack of innovation. Sad but true.
Oh, and for the record, the ds lite is going to mop up in the us. DS is being beaten in the us because we live in a very shallow country. We see a freakishly large hamburger system with a screen display that i can only describe as muddy where as the Japanese see that it has titles with more character in just their gameplay mechanics than anything that has tried to be pushed on the psp (so far at least). Now, when the ds lite comes out, the sexy little slice of the ipod pie with its screens that look like they may even be brighter than the psp's istelf, i realize that in less than a month, im finally going to be shelling out for a ds.
Reasons:
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
WarioWare Touched
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Picto-Chat (really captures that "3rd grade, passing ludicrous notes in class that just keep getting crazier" sense)
Web Browsing (with Stylus)
Hell, maybe even Princess Peach
What i can already say tho is that those few titles (about half are released) have spunk and strike my interest whereas everything on the psp seems like a rehash of a rehash. True, it has homebrew but, if thats ALL a system has going for it, the main company itself is going to close up shop and then nintendo wins the handheld game again. Sony, get your ***** together or youre done for. REAL gamers need games.

there's nothing wrong with the psp itself, where really just talking lazy developers here. I mean all the all star games for the ds would have worked on the psp only better. I mean mario 64 would've controlled better, metroid wouldv'e been like it's auto targeting brethren on the gamecube, mario kart wouldv'e been the same only now with a widescreen graphical update, hell even animal crossing would've been better on the psp. I mean developers can do a lot more game wise with that much extra memory and power. Just unfortunately the psps is getting shafted in the game department. So don't crap on the psp, crap on the developers who are too lazy to make good games for it.(i'm so tired of this argument yet i jump into the fray every time it comes up)

but havent we seen super mario before? and zelda? not to mention animal crossing and mario cart being almost ports themselves. i have seen very few games using the stylus in any manner that could be considered inovative. the only one i know of is metriod (onother one of nintendos reliable namesakes.) Dont give me all that ive played it all before psp porting games. the ds is doing the exact same thing. the only coherent difference between the systems is brand loyalty. i took the psp because of its capabilities. IMO the ds is a nothing more substantial than gba with a pen.

The NDS is leading with over 1 million untis in Europe and totally trash the psp in software sale(just like japan) with for example nintendo dogs that sold over 2 million copies (the PSP doesnt even have a platinum in europe yet) .

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nintendogs/europe-falls-for-nintendogs-155180.php
The DS and PSP my be tied in USA but the NDS i leading by big marginals in the rest of the world . And it totally trashes the psp in software sales which shouldnt come as a suprise , the current console/game ratio for PSP is actually lower than 1:2 . We all know its the games that makes the money and with the end of umd movies in sight the PSP could be in big trouble since it hasnt been profitable (or very little) for Sony yet . I wouldnt be suprised if Sony stopped producing the PSP within a year or so beacuse of its current finacial situation .

Persuit Force (late Feb)
Not a SINGLE one of them were in the top 25 for $$$ and they all cost $40 I believe (except Mega Man).
PLUS, the "price drop" happened where you could get PSP for $200. If PSP couldn't break away from DS in March, I'm sorry to say, it never will. ESPECIALLY with the DS Lite coming out in May. I'm fairly sure DS will be outselling PSP for the rest of the year at -least- thanks to the Lite.

In most of Europe? DS is beating PSP.
And in March's NPD sales, which just came out, DS had two games in the top 25. They both sold over 100k (the first 15 games did). PSP had one title at #25.

The PSP was selling a lot during the beginning of it's life because it had good graphics and games that were on consoles. The DS caught up and pwned it in games, and it will continue to pwn it. The games that come out for PSP are just one big dissapointment after a next.

Do they kill the pants off of anything on the psp, gameplay-wise? Yeah.
Come on guys. Its not about hardware, its about the software and psp just doesnt have it.
Oh, and to those idiots saying Nintendo is releasing rehashes as well, aside from Super Mario 64 (on ds) and Super Mario Sunshine (on gc), you couldnt be further from the truth. Yes, Nintendo releases games starring the same characters but the games themselves are different in major ways after every release. Stop trying to make excuses for laziness on sony's part.

Really, I don't even see how there is a debate here. One of them is an open source system with limitless possibilities, and one is a closed source console with half-assed emulators shoved into it.
The GP2X can essentially run any Linux software available, it just needs to be cross-compiled to ARM and linked with the GP2X's hardware API library.

Homebrew scene for psp are much more advanced then the ds counterpart.
So if you are only into homebrew then psp is the choise.
About real games though. I have GTA and Lumines to the PSP. Lumines is darn good i got to say. But thats about it for me. The only thing i look forward to is the ps1 emulator to play old rpgs i missed (not to many i missed).
While the DS Lite is with me where ever i go.
The games are so addicting its freaking insane.
Try playing Oueandan or Band brothers for a day and say you didnt enjoy it. It's impossible. So for the people actuallt wanting a handheld to play games on instead of homebrew the DS is the right choise.

These will change the outcome, make no doubt it:

* Flash on PSP - (free games for casual gamers)
* Cheap online distribution of games and minigames!
* PS3!
* White PSP on the west along with Price Drop
The psp came out a lot later in the market and it's price point and lack of blockbuster games are hurting it. Of course hurting is not really that bad as it's actually doing incredible well just not as well as the DS worldwide. But make no mistake Sony is making a bundle on it.
NDS domination days in japan are quite numbered. In the west where it's pretty much a tie you will see an amazing shift towards the PSP. The stats will be incredibly different come christmas time.

What *****. The PSP is way better, and that's just my opinion, because of the kinds of games i play.
I don't really care a damn about small little pure cartoony characters like Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong... i prefer games like FIFA, God of War, Gun, Tekken, Devil May Cry, and GTA.
I seriously don't understand why some people play the exact same games that were played with just as much hype ten years ago.
and please don't comment on the price difference, kthnx
