PSP to get boosted network capabilities - Image 1Sony is looking to boost the PSP's networking capabilities, announcing some new features for the handheld, so to speak. Future firmware updates will apparently enable the PSP to go directly to the PlayStation Store, among other things.

We're pretty sure that last sentence got you, so here's the lowdown on that. Sony Japan announced via press release that, come fall, the PSP will be able to access the PlayStation Store directly (and thus, download demos and other goodies), without the help of the PS3 or the PC.

Sony Japan will also commemorate the upgrading of the PSP with new game content, the first of which will be a portable version of the PS3's Mainichi Issyo, aptly dubbed Mainichi Issyo Portable.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the PSP will also get the ability to take their multiplayer gaming online via the PS3. Select PSP titles will be able to connect to the PS3 and use the PS3 to set up matches for the PSP game. The first title announced that will get this connectivity is Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which happens to be big in Japan.

These upcoming features will be compatible with all the different versions of the PSP, though users will have to upgrade their PSP's firmware to do so. Keep checking QJ for more updates on these developments as they happen.

» Why select titles?

Why not just let PS3 act as a regular wifi hotspot while in the XMB? That way EVERY game could connect through it

» I know, right?

I'd say the PSP would end up with the best online multiplayer out there if that happened.

well the big point and what makes this feature so cool is that Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is adhoc only... meaning that you can play games like that online without the need for Xlink Kai. That's a pretty nice feature if you ask me, one that you couldn't do if the PS3 was just set up as a wifi hotspot, although, that is a much-needed feature as well.

» about time...

I remember downloading the demo of loco roco directly from the psp a while ago (using the web browser)... why was this possibility ever removed? and why does it take so long to bring back??

by kupomogli - 2008-09-02 06:11
» he meant it that way

The two PS3's would be like a tunneling device in which the PSP's would think the person is in the same room.

You don't have to go into a long spiel about XLink Kai and MHP2G having ad-hoc when we already know this and he meant the exact same thing you said, just worded it poorly.

» correct me if im wrong

but this only uses the ps3 as a gateway to these other players not as a new interface to play your psp games on your tv via ps3 hookup. a cool idia but honestly the previous one is far better to be able to hook up yer psp and play the psp game on your tv directly thru the ps3 a six axis controllers.

kinda a reverse remote play which im suprised hasent been attempted or talked about.

if we can play our ps3 games on the psp ,which several of them this is exactly what u can do with remote play.

i see no reason we can have the opposite. i want to play my psp titles on my ps3. would be a extra incentive for having both imo.

» Uhm

If you can do this through the ps3 why cant you hook it up to a pc and do the same thin. And xlink kai is better seeing as its still wireless instead of having to put and hook it up to a ps3 and use it through usb. I prefer wireless and then hooking it up to my tv playing it online and in widescreen using fusa and xlink kai with speed booster but thats just my opinion. I hardly ever use my ps3 though I only have like 3 games for it.

How could you possibly be confused about this?

"if we can play our ps3 games on the psp ,which several of them this is exactly what u can do with remote play."

Very, very, very few games use remote play.

Which was never suggested anywhere in the article.

sorry jumped to conclusions but still the fact that you need the ps3 probably means some of the others who dont have ps3 are screwed when it comes to that and i still will prefer xlink kai over it even though i do have one because there might be more people that dont have ps3 and a larger amount of people.
