A recent interview in the Japanese games press has revealed that Sony is already considering potential new functions for it's PlayStation Portable handheld, including the introduction of a PSP camera.

Speaking to Famitsu magazine, SCE software platform development boss Izumi Kawanishi revealed that a new messaging application for the portable console was being planned, following hot on the heels of the recently released 2.0 upgrade, that introduces a web browser and wireless photo sharing to the console's myriad functions.

'We're currently considering the implementation of an e-mail system, but we want to think over the fundamental concept behind e-mail,' screeched Kawanishi-san. 'We think it would be great if people could communicate together with the use of video and voice.' Of course, we'll be needing a PSP-compatible camera and microphone if we're to realise Kawanishi's vision, and with this in mind we'd be surprised if Sony didn't already have something in the pipeline.

Check back for more on this shortly. Or as soon as we hear it. Whatever.

GodMedia I was referring to the features Sony had promised to eventually implement with the PSP, and that it failed to implement with the 2.0 firmware. And also...Sony isn't trying to 'surpass homebrew hacking'...these are features they've planned for a while.

Er...one more thing...the reason Sony can sell UMDs for so much is because *people are willing to buy it*! They *can* because people let them, and willingly fork over their money. It's a behavior I just can't understand, and perhaps never will. I suppose people prefer a multimedia gaming device over a portable dvd player, which makes sense, but why they'd be willing to pay 20-30 bucks for a disc playable only on a psp...I just can't understand that.

About the movies thing, We shouldn't forget the PS3 will support these UMD's. Sony is probably thinking ahead. Who knows maybe the camera and headfones will be campatible with PS3 as well, if they come out.

well I suspect, and Sony counts on many can not afford to own a portable dvd player AND a PSP so many go out and buy video umd's for trips anyway. It's all supply and demand. I admit I have one I bought for $15 for a airplane trip I took. I did not own the video in DVD form though. What pisses me off is how Sony is pushing the format and studios are eating it up. The prices will eventually go down but doesn't deny the fact that Sony is pushing a severely limited format that has very little use outside of their PSP.

hey i got an idea!
why don't you try to get the companies to create some more games for the psp first before you create all those accessories!

World was better when comments weren't working, i can't hold myself off reading stupid comments.
"I am kind of excited over a few of these new fetures but isn't this a gaming system?" Yes and NO. Sony was planning since the beggining AND NOT because homebrew to provide with the PSP many features that are not of a gaming system. The psp is supposed and will have some basic pda features and i have been hearing since long time ago about a possible video and audio communication function, which we now know may not be false. You don't have to abandon homebrew, thats YOUR problem, but don't come saying things like "They are desperate to surpass homebrew!" when we users that don't need or want hombrew have been expecting those features since long time ago.

Yes i will pay for those accesories...yes i will find them cool and most probably useful, yes thats just me, but i'm not alone. And i do find cool the support their console with new updates and features and accesories. They will release new games, wait for it, the psp hasn't even got to its first year

You don't know me, so don't blatantly take one sentence out of context that I said, sort of mix it with a comment somebody else said and call it a day. I was getting at that although this thing was meant to be much more than a gaming system, at its core it's still a gaming unit. I am tired of walking into stores and seeing more movies for this thing than games. And the games are mostly re-hashed PS1 and 2 ports. I know there are many clever and original titles coming out soon and the thing has only been out a few months but it still pisses me off. In a world of cell phones that comes with AIM IM chat and digital cameras for free, who cares? The web browser seems cool and I'm upgrading soon but the fact remains that Sony sits on the most powerful handheld ever, and I'm tired of hearing about the same old "unique" features that can be found on 32,000 other devices. Wow it can play mp3's? Wow how novel. I rest my case in my posts above, the multimedia features this thing does is not necessarily done better than competing technology, it's just that it does it at all that placates most people into not searching else where.

Oh yay...assuming homebrew fans decided to update to the latest firmware, we can look forward to spending another $50-$100 on accessories. Joyous...
Still...it's nice to see that Sony is really brainstorming to support their platform with some great programs. The only problem I see with that is that the PSP will have only realized its full potential after almost half its gaming life-cycle has gone by.

Half it's gaming life-cycle gone?

There's like half-a-dozen games out. We haven't even seen the first Christmas season with it yet? What the hell do you people want?

Anyways...

Let me see, do I want to keep playing my 15-year old 16-Bit games, the ocassional round of homebrew (Squarez, the only homebrew game I actually play), and emulating Windows at speeds slower than it ran on my old 486 (as if anyone thought it could really be any slower than that)? Or do I want a way for my memory stick to be filled daily with ads for penis-enhancing pills, free amateur porn subscriptions, and the chance to chat live with the people I avoid in real life?

Argh!!!! I hate these decisions!!!

I'll rather stick with my 1.5 and play every game ever made from Monkey Island to Sonic to all the current PSP title on ISO Loader
and enjoy the PDA functionality of the PSP home-brew while I'll check my email using VNC......did i miss something............really hard decision........hmm...guess not :P

What will be next? The ability to dry your clothes? I mean I am kind of excited over a few of these new fetures but isn't this a gaming system? Hell there are more movies out for it now than games. Speaking of movies, why are there $30 1.8GB umd's in a world full of very cheap portable DVD players, and where High-Def DVDs are around the corner? Oh I forgot, it's Sony and they can.
