PSP piracy numbers on the rise |
Ó
You guys must have a picture on how big piracy is when it comes to games. For Sony's handheld portable, we were able to get detailed information on some of the top games that have been downloaded over the internet. With the Custom Firmware being downloaded so much, in effect, ISOs and CSOs get their fair share of downloads as well. Here's a shortlist on some of the games that have been hitting the highs of piracy in one of the torrent sites:
- God of War: Chains of Olympus - 94,154
- Patapon - 112,183
- Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, - 197,113
- Crush - 48,959
- Loco Roco - 163,904
- Wipeout Pulse - 116,965
- Castlevania X Chronicles - 102,354
- Metal Gear Solid - Portable Ops (Not Including Plus) - 231,054
- Burnout Dominator - 269,486
With this online piracy, official support for the software gets bogged down when you have other options of acquiring games, like downloading. Hardware sales, on the other hand, might get a boost because of the rampant amount of easily accessible games over the net.
So you see, there's a negative relationship between the two: one goes down, but the other goes up. Technically, these two should go hand-in-hand when rising in sales. But in reality, it's not really happening.

First! well sad to say piracy is very rampant all over the world, specially in asian countries... anyways i love piracy, sorry to say that i aint gonna buy original copies of this games bcoz i aint got the money its really expensive even its 20$ still i aint gonna buy it, here in our country psp games are as low as 1$ sometimes half of it, any games even the latest... but if im rich enough then why not buy original right... hate me if you want, but thats the reality of it... Sorry to Sony and other gaming consoles as well, music and movies industry...Piracy still rulez!
torrents actually help me in deciding which game to play. for example, valhalla knights for the psp costs $49, but it is total crap. i'm sure no one wants to spend $49-59 to play a below average game. surprisingly, patapon is only $19. which is a very good game. playing iso's and cso's is FASTER that playing it off the UMD. but i actually bought nba live 08 for $50. and i didn't like the gameplay. you can hardly block. and players always do a step-back jumper instead of a layup, so the ball goes behind the backboard (which sucks big time). i actually want to buy games that are worth it. i will definitely buy God of War even though i already finished the game earlier this night. only 9.5 hours, unlocked all chests, and upgraded all weapons and magic. but it is a good game. so i will buy the umd, so i could still play it without the need of consuming my memory stick's space. and to tinjastin, yea, i can't blame him if he loves piracy. not everyone can afford to buy all the games that they want. besides, those guys (the one who makes games) are already rich as hell. hmm...
It's sad really, the PSP is the first system other than the Dreamcast that requires no physical modifications to fully pirate (ok, xbox softmod, but even that is a bit more in-depth than a simple firmware flash). Well we all know how unfortunately rapid the Dreamcast's demise was once the games hit the net. A great system that died well before its time. I sincerely hope the same doesn't hold true for the PSP. The game devs put a LOT of time, money, & effort into making these wonderful games, and it can't be encouraging for them to see their work widely distributed online illicitly.. The problem is, you can't force the genie back in the bottle. Nothing Sony does with firmware updates seems to do anything.. With the PS3 the only system on the market that is thus far piracy resistant, at least Sony is finally figuring out some way to keep the ISO kiddies at bay. Anyways, I'm surprised QJ posted this article. Anything that draws attention to this issue runs the risk of spreading the problem further. Having shopped in many a PSP section at various retailers, I can surmise that the general masses are oblivious to the dark side (a very GOOD thing). To all PSP fans, support our PSP game devs and buy what you so enjoy! Don't let the PSP suffer the same fate as the Dreamcast..
But, the dog in the photo is the best. Nice cap and matching eyepatch ensemble!
when i saw it, i instantly knew it was a keeper :)
People who dont buy original will never buy orignal. If it wasnt for piracy, they would by the PSP itself. Loss = 0 Profit = Hardware sales. Thats a fact, no matter what companies say.
I too, also pirate games, but its also because most of us are poor as heck, or maybe most of us are kids who just can't get their parents to buy as simple $20-$50 or something game. I really try to buy the game after I prate it though, but think about it, those game makers are filthy rich(Most of them.) Plus most Asian countries like the first poster said DO have SO MUCH piracy. The police practically don't even care. They might even buy from the pirates(Or whatever you call them.) Still, sorry Sony,Microsoft, etc, etc. Also sorry to the people who buy their games and will probably hate me and the other poor or unpersuasive people who pirate games.
"So you see, there's a negative relationship between the two: one goes down, but the other goes up. Technically, these two should go hand-in-hand when rising in sales. But in reality, it's not really happening." duhh, it's totally stupid to think so. What brings high console sale rates if you don't have any games for it?
I have bought most of my games that I have pirated. Not all people are the same. Many people like you are judge so very quickly. Its like if you see someone you automatically say hes a cheater or hacker or whatever. Many people really try to buy the games they pirate. Sometimes they might be poor after buying that $400 Xbox 360 or $400 or something PS3 or even both the PSP and PSP SLIM. Some like roddollente use those pirated games to choose a game they want. So for roddollente and the others like him, its like a extended, better, easier demo. P.S. Sorry for pulling you into this roddollente, just trying to make a point. Anyway those game companies are filthy rich. They make so much money out of the other ways they can. Example: You get a $400 Xbox 360 and want it wireless. Well, guess what, the wireless thing you buy to make your Xbox 360 wifi is $100. You can get much, much better ones for your PC or MAC for much cheaper, but it doesn't work with the Xbox 360. Plus games also cost $50-$60 now. Probably in the future they will cost not an arm and leg, but both that and your other ones.
Patapon is the perfect example of WHY there is so much piracy. On european online shops, it ranges from 30 euro to 50. Normally it should be 45. Also i'm sure that the anything-but-cheap videogame shop 'round the corner will have it for 55 euro -_-' Dunno about you, but even with a conversion 1:1 it wouldn't be such a great deal...
"duhh, it's totally stupid to think so. What brings high console sale rates if you don't have any games for it?" -Silvertiger There is a slight fallacy in your point. Don't forget the VERY important factor that the PSP has the highest emulation compatibility rate of ANY handheld ever created to date. Bearing this in mind, if no more software developers were to ever do another thing for the psp(God forbid!), the CFW PSP will still be a handheld with a library of well over 5000+ games when you include the entire collections of these systems: 1. PSP 2. PSX 3. GBA 4. NES 5. SNES 6. GENESIS 7. SCUMM 8. GBC 9. NEO-GEO CD 10. NEO GEO POCKET 11. AMIGA 12. ATARI 2600 13. COLECOVISION 14. GAME GEAR 15. SEGA MASTER SYSTEM And, others which just elude me because i personally dont use them. And, keep in mind that this does NOT include applications like; Bookr, Irshell, etc. The psp is a very complete handheld solution for gaming and multimedia on the go. Especially so with custom firmware.
None of these systems are having any new software developed for it. What drives new hardware sales is the creation of new software for it. Without new software, the company that creates the hardware will simply stagnate leading to less innovation on both sides. I think we all can agree that's not a good thing. This is directed more at everyone here talking about the "software companies are already rich" argument. While the company itself is rich, the developers themselves are not. This is the developer's livelihood. How many people make a game now? There are like 100 people on the staff at any one time and this is what their living is. Those guys aren't rich--they need the support of purchasers to keep the larger companies to publish their games. Without the wide distribution channels the big publisher provides, we'd never see the light of day for these games. No matter how you look at it, piracy is NOT a good thing for these developers, no matter how you cut it. I have to think, of the 250,000 people that have downloaded MGS, at least a handful of them would have bought it had they not had the opportunity to download it. I'll bet that the number of people that buy it after pirating it is minuscule in comparison to the number that won't buy it anymore because they pirated it.
why don't we just be honest about it... people pirate because life is hard and every bit of money you can save helps and because its easy... why go out and pay for something when its readily accessible with virtually no risk involved? Why go buy an album for a single song when you can spend 20 seconds double clicking and have it? To be honest, I generally look at people who DON'T pirate as mindless sheep that are afraid to take a (perceived) risk. And I really want to laugh at this line "If you ask this writer, the numbers indicated above are ridiculously high" ARE YOU SERIOUS? that's numbers for EVERYONE that has downloaded these torrents from that particular website. So 94,000 out of the 6.7 BILLION people in the world downloaded God of War from this site.... for people who can't add that up, that's less than .001% of the worlds population, even if we assume that only people in the US are downloading, that is still less than .03% of the entire population of the U.S. Hell, its not even enough to account for 1/5 of the population of Wyoming, the state with the smallest population in the U.S... yeah, you're right.... that's a HUGE number.
Its called CHANGE... technology changes things... I don't hear people whining about all the assemblyline workers that don't have jobs now since automobile manufacturers started using automated machines. You either embrace change or you get left behind...
Honestly, if handheld games were properly priced -- piracy wouldn't have such a dramatic effect on the PSP. Spending on a handheld game (even a console game) is pretty steep. Games for portable devices should range from - tops.
Now why would pspupdates block dollar signs? let me re-port that last sentence... "Games for portable devices should range from TWENTY to THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS - tops"
I do download iso's but only to see if there any good, if i like it i will buy it as i want to show my support for this console. I don't want to spent £25 ($50) on a game when it turns out to be S**t as hell, plus it is faster to load a game on iso than the umd. A person should really only have the iso if: 1)they already have the game on umd 2)if they a seeing if the game is worth buying (should delete the game after. It's a shame to see so many people are downloading pirate games, but this will always happen, nomatter what game or console it is.
Actually the DC wasn't the first 'open' system to piracy. There were a few systems before the DC that would run burnt games unmodified -- Sega CD/32x CD, PC Engine CD/Super CD, 3do. And then there are the cartridge based systems that could run games unmodified but required a proprietary format of cartridge. And actually the DC did have protection but it was in the form of a proprietary media -- the GDROM. But an exploit was found and games were ripped over a serial connection to a PC. Sega invested all their time and money into the proprietary format but didn't have the foresight to implement a disk validity check. Doh!
but there are not 6.7 billion psps cold, so that number is irrelevant. You instead should consider how many of those have downloaded out of the ~25 million psps sold, still a small number though, figuratively.
Indeed, I am also an isoloader for the psp simply because 1. Nintendo FTW! 2. Homebrew scene roxor Sony! 3. Victory is mine! ------ Expecting the oncoming negative comments, I believe with 73N5H1 that "people pirate because life is hard and every bit of money you can save helps". Also I don't see PSP resting in peace like DreamCast.
I have bought UMDs and the first thing I did was dump them to the memory stick. Not only is it free, but we all know that games on the memory stick 1. give us faster load times. I tried to run MPO+ off of the UMD and I couldn't believe how much slower it was just with the UMD. 2. Use less battery power 3. Are quieter. Sometimes I find myself stuck in the library between classes. I don't want the loud UMD drive whining when everyone else is studying. Not that I really need to be playing my PSP in the library, but sometimes after studying for a few hours I like to take a short break of GTA LCS before class. 4. you can carry several games on a 4gb mem stick. 5. Piracy is free. 6. Games are available sooner on torrents. Every time I buy a UMD, it sits on my shelf and is utilized on my memory stick. Sony should really start releasing games using the PS store.
but remember you hurting the company but who cares, I pirated too and If I really like the game, I delete the file and go buy it at wal-mart to support the company.
Wow, lot´s of dumbass opinions on this subject... They should post game sales numbers now.
Here's the deal. All that the industry is concerned with is with the numbers of brand new retail copies of each game sold....aka GREED. So lets say for example that if it wasnt piracy that was the problem and it was 30% or greater of sales numbers representing the purchase of used games versus new, then the industry would be *****ing about that because the publisher and maker of the games dont see a dime from the sale of preplayed games. My point being, is that the industry is always going to find something to ***** about because its purpose is based on greed, plain and simple. If it wasn't, why do I have be raped with a 40 or 50 dollar price tag on most new psp games? Firstly, The industry must come to a compromise with its consumers if it wishes to turn any of those piracy numbers into new retail sales numbers, starting with setting the price for games at a reasonable and logical dollar amount that doesn't gouge the consumer but still allows the makers to turn a decent profit. Secondly, The industry needs to allow us to purchase the games through new mediums such as an official game website, that should play a huge part in lowering the cost in the game itself because you're not paying for packaging, pressing and printing of the game and its manuals and cases that they come with and your eliminating the middle man (bestbuy, circuit city) from the equation which should further cut the cost of the product. Plus its way more convenient for the customer to be able to browse for titles to buy from his or her computer. (It would also be easier for the publisher to track the sales of their titles this way as well) You could even have a program that accompanies this process, kinda like buying music from itunes. It would keep track of all your purchases, assist you in the process of transferring your games to your memory stick (like transferring songs from itunes to your ipod) you could make a back up hard copy and just give it the same security or DRM that apple adds to its music library and I think you have a winning combination for the consumers and the industry. Prices go down, buying convenience goes up, sales go up and everyones stays happy, done like dinner. Thirdly and lastly, Quit being so damn self-serving and slow moving!! You say that Sony listens to their customers and especially the PSP community and we all know that that is a load of crap because if you did, your firmware updates would concentrate more on adding new optional add on features then keeping me from running unassigned code. When I bought my PSP i thought wow, it'd be really cool if the PSP had internet radio, a brower that could support youtube and other online video sites (netflix, funny or die.com etc....) , maybe some sort of pda functionality as well and a service to allow me to play retro classics as well from nes, snes, n64, sega genesis, psone and the arcade classic that we all remember etc ...etc... because all major consoles allow you to do that. Well in my journies Ive found that all of these things can be done and have been thanks to the PSP hacking/modding community (and hats off to everyone of them). And shame on you Sony. you just finally added internet radio, what the hell is the hold up? Contract the people who developed the other homebrew apps to make them for you as an official part of the additional add ons that you could make available for your customers via firmware upgrades. As far as offering classic retro titles and what not, talk to the Big N and Sega, work out a FAIR licensing deal that works for your customers and yourself and make it happen. If the point in creating the PSP was to sell a ton of units then we (your customers) see you doing very little in the way of enticing us and your non-customers to make that happen. The point is Sony, we see lots of potential in your PSP and you doing very little to reach its full potential. Thats why you have such a huge hacking/modding/homebrew community. Because we have decided that if you wont give us what we want, then we will. Its time you ste
Its time you stepped up as a company and really took the reigns on this and started making the PSP the best it can be for us. Give us a free additional optional addons in our firmware updates such as a PDA app, a brower that supports the newest version of flash or some other way to view youtube and other video sites online, give us a screen shot app, instant messaging app ..etc...etc... Give us a fair and inexpensive way to play the classics on our psp and dont rip us off selling us an nes game for 5 dollars when i can get it for 1 or less, and for crying out loud unlock the full screen resolution on the psp for watching videos/movies!!! The hackers/modders/homebrew community have already paved the way for you, all you need to do is pay attention and get on board. You think these people are your enemies...Dark Alex, Zx-81..etc.. when these people and many more are the PSP's clear salvation. Put them to work for you!! Turn them into your friends. In summation Sony, copy the apple business model for itunes/ipod and dont get greedy in the process. Give the people what they want today!! Here and now!! And maybe give them what they didn't know they wanted. INNOVATE!!! At this point you've really got nothing to lose and everything to gain, take a chance. Not only will your game sales go up 10 fold, but you'll also see a great increase in hardware sales as well. Isn't that why you're here in the first place?
Article comment said: "Itching to share?" I've got a zero day CSO of Space Invaders Extreme for distribution. Does that count? Uncreated
I used to pirate SNES games using my UFO64 ROM downloading unit. That was ages ago! Stick the cartridge in the top and a floppy disc in the side of the unit and BAM -- you'll have a dumped ROM in five minutes. Uncreated
lol they've been on the rise since iso loading has been available on the psp. i mean iguess there are more sites with them but it's been around for awhile...old news
Sega CD/32x CD, PC Engine CD/Super CD, 3do, were released long before CD burners were cheap as nuts and available everywhere. They didn't have to worry about piracy because in all but the 3DO, CD burners weren't even invented yet. A disk validity check is the easiest for modders to crack - PS1, PS2, Xbox, GC, Wii, 360 all have been broken in that dept. Proprietary format is usually the strongest (PS3 w/blu-ray for example). The cartridge backup units for SNES were also nearly impossible for most to know about, let alone find for sale before the days of the internet. Admittedly, I would have bought one myself had I known where to get one.
You all know prices of the games wouldn't be so high if you didn't pirate games, right? They have to inflate the price to compensate for the losses from piracy.
name ONE 'wonderful' game for the psp, other than mhf
Well maybe if you didn't have 20000000000000000000000000 AdSence ads on your site? Perhaps if the cheapskate owner of the site actually put gaming before money then people wouldn't be so informed about piracy huh? Cause as you know this site is very popular and when people see the little "Unlimited PSP Game Downloads" ads from PSPBlender they go to it and sign up. Maybe, just maybe, it will be the thing that gets AdSence shut down. C'mon Sony...
if it weren't for custom firmware, the psp would have died about 1 year ago, a psp without cfw is really boring, only being able to use it for music and a couple umd's which aren't very good anyway, especially for $40
The reason games are so expensive is because companies lose money on the system. At launch PS3s cost Sony one hundred dollars a pop which will, later, be gained from the average ten games that the user will buy; ten dollars a game (for licensing fees) times ten equals one hundred not to mention they have to make money to pay off development.
The boost in PSP sales doesn't really gain money for Sony. Sony doesn't make money off of system sales, they make money when games, accessories etc... are bought. And if all these people buying these PSPs just download games, Sony doesn't make money at all.
Maybe the game companies should reduce the price of their damn games. No handheld game should cost more than 25-30$. 20$ for all but the most stellar games would suffice. Also, packing games with better online modes and more stuff to do would be nice. No one wants to pay 40$ for a 7 hour game. And to those who say "it's to make up for piracy", sorry. Game prices were always this high.
I pirate not because I cannot afford the games, or because I dont have access to them. I've pirated every single one of the 20 + games I've played on the PSP simply because I am GREEDY. Also, pirating and makin fun of dumbos who pay for games is fun. altho this sorta backfired on me. Not paying for the games, I have no respect or inclination to play them. Before when I bought a game, I would try to play it ot the fullest extent and milk every drop of fun out of it. Now, I dont care. If i dont like the first couple hours of the game, I say screw it and move to another one. Essentially, playing psp games isnt that fun anymore if I dont pay for them :(
Gundam SEED: Omni vs ZAFT Ace Combat Tekken Locoroco R+C Ridge Racers Wipeout Pure It's a matter of taste, certainly, but I get tired of people whinging about a "lack of good games on the PSP". It's garbage.
Maybe Sony should think about this before they release countless upon countless myriad firmware updates. I'm all for new content, but only 2-3 of their 25+ updates included new content. When a company tries to lock people out of their own systems, thats just asking for trouble. With CFW's able to play games that (require) higher updates, it's a no brainer why people use cfw compared to sony's official garbage. Anyhow my 2 cents.
Well... No CFW = No piracy CFW = 98 % of its users downloads games from the internet... It's that easy, if we didnt have CFW, then there would been no piracy! But homebrews are great, so why not make a CFW WITHOUT ISO/CSO loader? The guilty men are actually DaX an the rest of his gang.
skillz stfu noob, ISO loading was available looooong before CFW. Either you are new to the community or just an uninformed idiot. Probably both.
its downright inhuman to blame the victim for the theft, yet all these individuals could not care less. as long as they have an excuse to continue pirating, they could not care less. its sony's fault that its so easy for me to steal from them. everyone that doesnt pirate is a mindless sheep. these games are too expensive. the list of self excusing reasons for piracy continues to grow larger and larger. I buy games because i want to support these people. these people are not robbing me, they are simply trying to make a fun game that i can play, in exchange for my money, for all the work that went into making it. my 30 or 40 dollars for the hours and hours that went into making a game. i could only hope that someone might read this and simply consider the people that piracy is hurting. no one makes you play their games, they just are trying to work the 9 to 5, day in and day out, all to bring you a fun game to play. is it wrong of them to want something back for all that hard work? tl;dr: please consider the people that piracy hurts.
Sony has kept us from using the cool features and add-ons that japan and other continents get.I pirate games yes,but i dont keep them in my memory stick or hard drive, i just play for a few hours then delete it.sooner or later its price go down and theres when i buy it...anyways my thoughts in this matter is that sooner or later sony will forget about psp and move on.now what? buy a ps3?hell no
How long have you had a PSP for(? Custom Firmware or Dark Alex have nothing to do with the piracy. Piracy has been around since 1.5 where we used loaders such as Fastloader, devhook etc. Anyway im sure it does'nt make a big dent in sonys huge wallet! Anyway i would have thought piracy for the DS would be higher what with the R4 and the ease of using them.
Just WOW. Very moving and impressive speech. Kinda sounds like those Wendy's commercials. You know? Where they say "Hey! I want a fresh juicy burger and want it now." Then they run or do something differently than the others. Back to the topic, maybe we should petition or something. We'll probably lose though. I agree with you all the way. : )
Remember when any video games used to cost $20 or less. Then one day every it said "Now that video games are getting more complicated, we have to raise the price just a teensy bit." Then came $50 games till it reached $60 or more today. Ahhhh. Someday they might cost $100 or even more. Maybe as much as your house and car. P.S.- The $20 games were the lowest (For New and pretty much any game. Excluding the used and old games.) in my lifetime. So sorry if games were actually cheaper than that to some of you.
Piracy...is lame. Suck it up and buy the damn game. I used to download PSP games like there was no tomorrow, then stopped for some reason. I just got tired of it. You don't have to be rich to afford these games... Just wow. This is just sad. My PSP Slim is running 3.90 m33 but I have no ISO/CSO files on it. Go ahead, give me no stars because you're too big of a ***** to actually buy your products.
Although some of us say that we buy the game in order to try it out, this is a blatant lie. Personally, I've bought all of the good RPGs that came out for the PSP. Tales of Eternia? Hell yeah, 40+ hours of fun went into it.. great game and well worth the money. This is beside the point. The games that I wont get a lot of enjoyment out of are an easy target for downloading. Patapon? The game is very unique but to me, I didn't like it, and I'm glad I got a chance to try it out first. The new Wild ARMs XF will most definately get a buy out of me as soon as it's available on my local store shelves. I'm also considering getting GoW but the short story isn't appealing to me much. Odds are, I'll buy the great games and borrow the lame ones.
Basically there are alot of reasons for piracy. People say it is because of CFW. I use CFW so I can go on youtube or IM or access my PC media file. I will download and ISO to try out a game. I was going to buy Valhalla Knights until I downloaded it, tried it, didn't like it, deleted it. I only buy games I like I have over 30+ PS2 games because I like them. Stores today don't let you buy a game and return it if you opened it. Besides ever since I put CFW on my PSP I have gotten 3 of my friends to buy a PSP and maybe 2 more later on because they like what CFW can do. Hey someone had to buy the game to put the ISO online. I am also not rich enough to buy games I want to try.
I'm ashamed to admit I'm the same. I spend more time copying games onto my PSP than actually playing them. Patapon and GoW are the first I've actually played a lot, so games are getting very good now :) Finished GoW! Too cheap to pay for the UMD though... I will burn, I know...
the prices were high before there was even a way to run ISOs....
so the $600+ they sold the system for at launch wasn't enough to pay for productions costs? I'm not buyin' that...
DAX and the other homebrewers aren't responsible for the demand for and ISO/CSO loader... don't blame them for giving us what we want.
Agreed... I was shocked that a portable game could cost as much as a home console game.
I don't need an excuse... I pirate because its easy and doesn't hurt my wallet... end of story. Maybe you have 30 or 40 dollars to shell out every time you want some entertainment, but everyone doesn't, so why don't you try to look at someone elses point of view as well.
sadly, this is the original reason that I went to CFW... my wife had a Japanese PSP and wanted to switch to American FW.... unfortunately, it isn't possible to change to a different region officially... so... in came CFW and fake region. Now that we both have CFW, I don't know how we ever lived without it.
this is what i would do: piracy games, but also buy the ones i can. for example dracula x chronicles (koji said he would think about making another castlevania for psp depending on the sales) we should support developers buying some games in order to hope for future games to be released. other reason for piracy: games that never reaches american shores (just in japan) we can download and even hope for a translation.
"I pirate Sony 'cause I like Nintendo." ...Haha, kind of retarded but whatever floats your boat.
people that asks what are great games on your system and brags that his console of choice has better greater games are stupid morons that are just being their regular troll self. it should be clear to everybody that almost all gaming systems fail or success has its own fair share of great titles depending on the person asked. if you ask me, the nintendo virtual boy has great wonderful games, but i know trollers will disagree and bash my statement without even knowing my reason. heck lot of us will think those old atari games are stupid dots and squares yet a generation of game players will disagree because they enjoyed playing those square and dots during those times and liven up their childhood days. and about the rampant piracy, yes boost in pirated games also equals boost on console sales so people can play the pirated games. software piracy was very very hard way back cartridge days because pirated games also cost almost the same as the original ones. but the when cd based games appear, all hell/heaven breaks loose. poor people can now save up for a console and pirate games (or in most case buy a burnt copy for only 2-5 percent of the original price), third world countries are now also playing what those high class countries are already experiencing. and even high class players now download stuff. in asia there is now an alternative to pirating and it is somehow working, free software of mmorpg but prepaid monthly subscription based. take for example ragnarok online which is still strong even if it is dated. the previous last 2 console gens are filled with piracy and of course the current gen are also experiencing the same (not yet for ps3). but did you ever wonder, if piracy hurts the industry, why is the ps1 and ps2 called a MULTI BILLION DOLLAR SUCCESS? VCD + DVD piracy? i think its the same case above! and i know everybody is waiting for the ps3 to be pirate able (custom firmware that loads burned disc copies , disc images or modchips), by that time comes we will see rapid growth in ps3 console hardware sales and yet still some growth on the software sales.
this article can also be called "PSP's Greatest Games List" just add em GTA's, they are not pirated because the original UMD was used to load program unto the psp.
You can start by getting off your moral high horse. You can not sit there and act like you spent your entire life in a haze of justice and have never cheated the system. Who do you think you are? You want to buy games, go right ahead, more power to you, but don't sit there smug and try to judge the rest of us because we decide to do things differently. You, my friend are down right inhuman, because even the Pope masturbates.
I agree with you 100%. Piracey is good. :P The only way to stop piracey is to drop the prices from $100 to $20. I would buy games for $20 but I wont buy them for $100. It costs me $20 to rent 2 games these days so if they cost $20 to buy then you can have my money. I do buy old, second hand games as they are $20 but new ones I will never buy at thier stupid high prices. There is NO way anyone can stop piracy. It will always be around. If you have a good look at it when we download games it still costs us download usage, time, blank dvd/cd, ink for printing covers/dvd or if you dont download but rent then copy like I do it costs to rent too. Oh, piracey will alwasy be around also if they release at different times around the world. Here in OZ games/movies are released sometimes months after being released in the US so of course there will be piracey for those people left out of the initial release. IF and I doubt anyone in authority will read this, 2 things to do to stop piracey. 1, drop the price to sopething everyone can afford. 2, worldwide release at same time.
I read your comment xche78x and thought thats exactly what I'm doing, waiting for the PS3 to be hacked to play ISO/backups then I will get one. When it finally happens $ony wont know what hit them as the sales will go through the roof. The only reason I got a 360 which I now regret is coz it plays backups. I think the 360 is the worst console out there as its so unstable and M$ ban it. If $ony never ban PS3's and a hack is found soon they will have the winning machine. The only reason the 360 is winning atm is coz of the backup playing..... I think the winning console is the PS2 but the nextgen console is the 360 with the Wii racing up and the PS3 lagging behind waiting for the hack then it'll overtake all.
if they want to charge 50 dollars for a 10 hour game then the y deserve to be DL'd
Not everyone can just go out and buy all the games they want. My mom would never let me spend much on games, and on top of that I only get $15 a month in allowance. The only reason I bought the PSP was because I could get games on it for free. If I had the money to buy the games, trust me, I would.
For those of you saying you download the games because you can't afford them... By your argument, because I can't afford a PSP or a tv, its okay for me to break into your house and take your PSP and your tv. It'll also be your fault because you made it so easy for me to steal from you. Its not your god given right to play games, so quit acting like it is and grow the hell up.
I've seen ths same "story" on pspupdates AND pspfanboy in the last two days, and while piracy is always an issue in the modern entertainment industry, I think it's garbage to use this data as some sort of definitive proof that "PSP is teh d00med." For one thing, the numbers are for PEOPLE WHO DOWNLOADED THE TORRENT FILE. How many people ACTUALLY downloaded the often 1-1.8GB ISO file is a different story... one that we'll never know the answer to. For another thing, these are worldwide downloads of torrent files, spread across many regions. For a third thing, how many times have people seen torrents of games with threads asking "how do I play this?" Many more torrents are downloaded than can actually be USED. Modding a PSP-slim (or a phat, with current firmware) isn't as simple as it's made out to be... finding someone with a pandora battery isn't always that easy. Saying the DC failed because of "piracy" is also bunk, as the average game player/console owner in 1999-2001 didn't have access to the game files OR a CD-burner. I know I was on dial-up at the time, and never even knew games could be copied or how to do it. Never had any bootleg DC games. Was piracy a factor? Maybe, but I think the introduction of the PS2 might have had more to do with it. Lastly, I don't come to news sites like this to be "lectured" about anything. If you feel this is "news," then report it... keep the sermons for Sunday school (this is more in response to the PSP Fanboy article that the one here).
yo i think if ppl dont stop pirating then they will stop making psp games because every time someone download a game thats like 20$ the game developers are loosing so if i was a game developer why would i make a very good game for psp if im not gonna make much money
im not really suprized about any of this... it does kinda show how much over priced games are now.. but hey, im sure sony is making a decent profit off the hardware alone from the psp so i'd think they are kinda happy./
Those of you who bleat about not being able to afford the games i ask how did you afford to and why did you buy a games console? surly your money would have been better spent on food, cloths or drink if your so poor! please give me a charity reg number so i may help you poor soles out of your hole before you have to turn to prostitution to make it from one day to the next! dont lie to yourself that you buy pirate because you cant afford it you buy pirate because you think its anti establishment, because your mum wouldn't like it. You bleat that the games are too expensive! its because of people like you they are so expensive, do think games develop themselves? that the programers do it for the love of gaming? no they do it for money just like you do.. oh sorry forgot i was talking about the scum of the world drag your self down the social to claim benefits. Im not daft enough to believe that if there was no pirate games games would be cheaper but it wouldn't hurt now would it, at least it would remove that excuse from the games companies. I shall end my rant with a little song. YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM YOUR SCUM.
I bought my PSP for $100, and that was after saving up for a while. Like I said, I only get $15 a month for allowance, and I can't buy $40 PSP games unless I save up for months. Why would I do that when I could just download the games? I would never have bought the PSP if I couldn't run emulators and get free games. A few of my friends bought PSP's and big memory cards because they found out from me that they could get free games and classic games from other systems on their PSP's. I am not poor, I just have better things to be spending my allowance on then games. On the topic of the programmers, I am one myself. I may not be as skilled as a professional, but we share the same feelings about programming. I love to program, and I don't do it for money. I'm in the middle of making an RPG, and I'm not doing this for a profit. Yes, professional programmers do it for the money, but if they had other jobs they would still be doing it, just out of the love for programming. Now, perhaps before you call me "scum", you should spend your money on an education. (you're scum*)
I starting pirating games because i was tired of buying games that sucked. And just so everyone knows of all of the games that i have pirated i liked about 2 of them but even thoughs games i only played for like an hour. If they can so me a good game for the psp then i will buy it. I currently have about 25 games for the psp so that shows that i do not pirate everything
So you have better things to spend your money, so why buy the psp in the first place? as for my education only a fool would believe that to be smart you have to be educated, everything i have i have worked hard for, i dabble in animation and game design myself as well as writing music and short stories you judge me on my disgust at thieves and believe me to be stupid i judge you as scum because you openly admit to theft without remorse. peace and love Tapp.
"only a fool would believe that to be smart you have to be educated". You really aren't that bright, are you? Yes, I admit to piracy, but do you have to go rant at me for that? I wouldn't have bought a PSP if it weren't for the piracy, so Sony would not have made a profit off me at all. This way, at least they make money off the PSP sale itself. I highly doubt you're capable of making a game, based off the level of intelligence you've shown. You're just a close-minded idiot, and if I were you, I would just leave this site, before you embarrass yourself more.
out of the ~25 million psp sold... thats still .3% that pirated GOW from that site... could be a small number, depending on whether or not its the same at other torrent websites...
So your just going to stoop to insults because you have no argument as to why it is o.k for you to buy pirate games? well as i do have a argument i wont stoop to your level instead let me ask you this. Why did you buy your PSP, why not mug some kid for it or lift it from a shop? oh i hear you cry im not a criminal, yes, yes your are and that my friend makes you scum. Stop taking it personally i speak not to you but to all of those who indulge in piracy and if you dont like being branded scum, pay for your games, and if you believe there to expensive do something about it protest because i bet if the thousands of you who do pirate games got together began lobbying for price changes Sony e.t.c would have to listen, pirating wont make games cheaper. But thats to much hard work, better to be a sheep and follow blindly bleating 'Im not hurting anyone' Love ya loads ya big crazy fool, Tapp.
You're talking to me about insulting, yet you're the one calling me scum. I bought my PSP because I do not steal. I may pirate games, but that doesn't mean I'm a criminal and that I'm going to run around shoplifting. I had the cash to buy the PSP, so I bought it. I'm not going to argue about pirating games being okay, I admit I do it, and the reason why is because I have no reason to do otherwise. Logically, I would go for the free games instead for forking over $40 per game. I'm not going to buy my games because one idiot is calling me scum, I could really care less. I've made my decision, and you're not going to change it. And if you call piracy being a 'sheep', then take a look at the numbers for legitimate buyers. If anything, you're the one who is the sheep.
I may pirate games but that dosnt mean im a criminal ? i think you'll find it does. I dont expect to change you Addy771 im just trying to open you eyes. Peace out Dude.
No, it doesn't. Good work avoiding almost everything I say, you're such a god damn hypocrite.
firstly i pirate games for my computer and my psp and i keep them on my ms or hard drive. y would you go out and buy a game if you just had it on storage. i know it affects the publisher, but right now, there's not that much you can do about it. also sony makes plenty of money from other stuff besides game systems.
but i do care about the publisher
When it comes down to it, I don't feel inclined to purchase a 40$ game with 8 hours of game play. In reality, that's a huge waste when it can only be traded back for 20$. Now, if they want to truly profit they need to quit pushing out garbage that won't hold attention. Give us a game that we can't put down. Content. We need more content. Give us Online play! Full multiplayer always makes games live longer and, as a result, sell more. When Phantasy Star comes out it's only going to have Adhoc? Right there, that's sad. The PSP is fully capable of handling an online game and should not be treated as a child, give us something that we HAVE to have. If all else fails, give us registration codes inside the case. Like computer games so if we want to play online we have to buy the game. And with this I say: It's not our fault your games suck, or that they can't last for a week of gameplay, it's yours.
You must all be 15 because you simply do not understand it... If everyone keeps pirating the developers won't give you anymore games to download. So you won't be able to sit in the back of your momma's mini van and play your stupid little psp games. Wait till you get a real job and someone tries to steal some of your own work and see how cool it is on the other side of the fence.
Or you could look at it another way. That's 94,000 x $40.00 (almost $4 million) that should be going to the develeoper. Granted not all of the people who downloaded it would actually buy the game if piracy wasn't an option, i guarantee a good percentage of them would have. Your logic actually disgusts me. Comparing 94,000 to the WORLD POPULATION shows how ignorant you are. The numbers ARE ridiculously high. The game has been out for 2 weeks? I'm not going to lie, on a boring night i'll download a game just for fun, but it's rather disgusting at heart. I bought GoW.. why? why would i buy a game i could just as easily steal? Someone has to buy there games, and i honestly want to support a developer when they clearly made a quality product. If the ps3 gets hacked, yes, temptation will probably cause me to try a game or two, but i REALLY hope it doesn't get hacked.
If more people pirated, Sony would take more actions to prevent piracy. They're not just going to give up and leave the video game industry because of piracy. Only a small percentage of people pirate PSP games, so Sony and the game developers still make loads of money.
... how PSPupdates is so uncritical of this "research" (i.e. one guy posting a few numbers). This article is almost as ridiculous as those comments a few months back about how "90% of DS owners are using an R4." Come on, guys... do your journalistic duty and investigate the issue if you want to report on it... don't just take this junk at face value.
"I only download iso's or cso's just to try out the game. If I like it I buy it and if I don't I'll just delete the game." All of that is bullcrap. If you downloaded a game you stole it. You cant justify what is a good game and what isnt a good game. Bottom line is you download a game you stole the game. It doesnt matter if you only kept the game for 5 minutes to an hour or if you kept it for a week untill you deleted it. Honestly if youre gonna "tryout" a game insted of downloading it why dont you just go rent it??????? Yeah I download games and never do I buy the umd. But I dont go on boards telling people that when they download games they are stealing! And if youre gonna say may statment contradicts my my statment before you are wrong. I said you people are full of crap when you download games I never said it was wrong. So please if youre gonna try to make piraters feel bad just stfu and thinkl before you type anything.
By your logic we should blame dev's for ever making games for people to pirate?
everybody does it. Its sad that we do but its expensive to buy these games. I pirate all the time.
i don't think it's a big deal. i have 7 out of those 10 sitting on my computer, if not on my psp. not to mention that i have about 20 - 25 more. it's just more convenient than having to carry umds around. plus, i don't make much money at my job, so i can't afford to buy new games all the time. if i had the cash to spend...... i would....get the 8gb memory stick to put more on, lol. but seriously, if sony wanted a hack proof system, they wouldn't add hard drives/portable media, not to mention that the PSP is the perfect candidate for piracy. if another system offered this many free games, i'd be all for it.
people who put the $ in Sony are retarded. all you see from those morons are comments like "man ***** $ony, they jus wanta take all our money" or "$ONY SUX I AM NEVER GONNA SUPPORT THOSE GREEDY BASTARDS" WTF? they supply you with a gaming system, and they have a business, so you call them greedy? here's a thought: stop wasting the time hitting Shift + 4, and flaming the company you obviously bought something from, and get a life. yeah i use iso's and cso's too, but i'm not gonna flame sony for it. you must feel real proud that someone else wrote a program for your psp, and you did an easy install. you're a genius, now shut up. point and match. sony does make good games, but there's also *****ty games on ALL of the consoles. so shut your faces and just play the damn games. who cares about who pirated what.
you're an idiot. i openly admit to theft on a daily basis, without ANY remorse. not just from the internet, from everywhere. i have about 32,000 wii points that i've stolen from stores, not to mention the whole collection of Counter strike source keys i have on file. just because i have money doesn't mean i'd like to spend it on a game that might be *****ty. if i could, i would download Wii games too. my mouse and hard drives in this computer are stolen too, does that make me any less of a hardworking american than you? i still go to work, i just don't spend my money on lame things like *****ty games. i have rent and bills to pay, not just 50 bucks to go blow on ratchet and clank (which i downloaded, and i think it sucks ass.) so stop your flaming, shut your mouth, and relax. if people who pirate and steal games are "bad people", who *****ing cares. stop butting into our lives. ha. game.
