More bad news for the PSP Go - Nedgame, the largest retailer in Holland, has confirmed that they will not be stocking the new PSP. Eurogamer Holland was able to get the details on this boycott, and the reasons behind it don't come as a surprise. Find out why.

One of the primary reasons is because of its price: € 249.99 - which is around a stinging equivalent of US$ 367. Nedgame pointed out that the price is simply not justified with the portable's features. For one, the retailer believes that the smaller screen isn't just worth it. For a sizable € 80 (about US$ 117) less, they can get a PSP-3000.

Another reason is that selling the PSP Go may lead to their own detriment. Without a UMD drive for games that retailers could sell, Nedgame would basically be selling a device that they won't be able to profit from later as compared to the first three PSPs. Nedgame also expressed their discomfort with the way Sony is trying to pull monopoly on software with digital distribution.

Eurogamer also points out that Nedgame will not be the only retailer in Holland to boycott the PSP Go. The same might go for retailers in Spain, where similar echoes have been heard.

On a more positive light for Sony, rumors of a possible PSP Go price reduction are floating around. If those turn out to be real, and if throw in a little something in it for the retailers, then they just might reconsider. Maybe.

» No real surprise

I keep seeing people leaving messages that "games will get cheaper when retail stores cease to exist". Especially on the Eurogamer site.

Bollocks. These people have no grasp of economics.

If Fate Unlimited Code had hit retail it would have been cheaper than £23.99. It'll stay online and garner virtually no sales because Dissidia and Soul Calibur can be bought in stores for £17.99

The Go will bomb, and I'm very sad about that as I like the concept. What it needs is for retail games to come with codes for digital downloads, which preserves the retail model (and therefore doesn't threaten the front line Sony are reliant on for hardware sales) and gives gamers a real choice. Until this happens, the whole project is doomed to failure. It's not the hardware that's flawed, it's the distribution model.

» sony needs to look at the bright side of this.

if they dont sell the go's to retailers, then they wont lose money on lost sales. then HOPEFULY they can do something smart after they get a reality call from this

They need to get used to this. Microsoft is no different to this, they push digital distribution just like Sony, and with the success of Steam and other alternatives, ALL retailers will soon have a problem. I personally prefer discs, but there are a lot of people who have no problems with DL games. It will still take some time before DL games will be just as established as disc-based games, but it the trend is going digital.

» WRONG

MS is not the same way. They haven't released a 360 model without a DVD drive and only accepts games from their online store cutting out retailers.

No, they don't have to get used to it. Retailers hold the power as long as Sony has hardware to sell.

I for one am glad PSP Go is bombing. PSP2 needs a UMD drive.

» Hmmm How does the iPod model work?

Sell device at retail and use digital distribution to sell s/w. Retailer sees nothing from that. These guys are hyprocrites!

» Personally, I would like a smaller unit....

The present psp model is nice but it is still a little long to fit in my jacket pocket. As far as games go for the PSP.....uh...Uhhhh naw i have bought 3 since i owned my present model, I like the psp for the system hardware. to be truthful i will most likely buy one when they can hack this system so that i may play some good games from Atari,NES, SNES,GB,GBC, GBA and PS1. And before you guy's scream Pirate, Most of the psp Library of games that is available is pure junk and I would not waste my time downloading them. I buy my games i just don't believe in buying them over and over for every new system .But i love the PSP and look forward to the Go .

» Retailers do get business. . .

Even though it is digital download, people still have to buy iTunes cards as not everybody pays for it online.

You can't really compare the Psp go to Iphone, i mean if you don't buy any games for Iphone it's still works as a phone, what use is the Psp go without any games?

» Its also getting like that over here in the UK.

I asked in the retailer GAME over here in the UK, have you got a PSP Go in yet, and they said "Sorry Sir, we are not going to sell them in here", in fact he said that they are also phasing out the PSP games altogether as no ones buying them any more, i wonder why? (Piracy is killing the PSP and that is the proof), so i said in a joking way, finally we may get some bargain's in here, he wasn't too amused) LOL

All i want to do is see a PSP Go for myself, but its going to be very difficult to find one, over here anyway.

» Now

Do they make a profit off of this? I heard somewhere that retailers don't make much of a profit, if at all, on the consoles themselves.. Is that true?

» NO GO

It's not just there that isn't getting the GO.

I've spoken to about 6 retailers here in Australia and none are getting it in.

1, it only plays downloaded games so they cant sell games for it.

2, they only make a $10 profit on selling the unit so its not worth them getting it in.

3, not many people are after it. Not enough interest so looks like it'll be a "if you want it we will have to special order one for you" kinda deal.

As the rumor of the 4000 has already come around the GO sounds like a joke.

» @tenchi

the ZuneHD (xbox portable) comes out soon

pretty sure that wont be any type of drive in there.

MS is going the same way.

difference is, PSP has a UMD model already, i doubt MS will release a portable system with any type of physical media. besides the internal memory or the almost mandatory memory stick support that is.

Dunno if that's true. I've pre-ordered LBP and Motorstorm from my GAME store (been told LBP especially has pretty high pre-orders). I hadn't seen the PSP Go in there (haven't been there in a few weeks) but their website certainly has them for sale.
