Homebrew developer USpeed has created a new plugin that lets you to create and manage multiple profiles within your device. Handy if you have to share your PSP.

uspeed1

Developer's note:

Boried about that games that don't permit you to create how many save game as you want ? Maybe I have a solution ! This plugin will switch between profiles you create to allow you to separate savegames. Your girlfriend will not ever kill your stats !!! ;) Usefull : After XMB load, current profile is displayed

How does it work ?

USpeed Profile Manager will switch between all folders "SAVEDATA_<NUMBER>" in order to activate current profile on "SAVEDATA" folder. The plugin can manage up to 20 different profiles (folders "SAVEDATA_<NUMBER>") Current profile is on "SAVEDATA" folder to work with standard. A savegame in folder "USPM20110315" will allow to customize your name, icon and colors.

Installation:

  1. Copy "profileManager.prx" in "PSP/sepugins" of your Memory Stick
  2. Edit file "PSP/seplugins/vsh.txt" and/or "PSP/seplugins/game.txt to add the line "ms0:/seplugins/profileManager.prx 1"
  3. Reboot your PSP.

This app is also the devs enntry for the ongoing PSP Genesis Competition 2011.

Pretty neat little application on paper. Would have thought Sorny and Nintendo would have thought of something like this for their handhelds by now since not every kid has a handheld to themselves in a family of more than one child.

sony wont cause
1) psps are meant to be personal. 1 per person, same for nintendo
2) too much of your data is stored in the internal flash (like your theme and wallpaper) there isnt enough space for multiple profiles

And once again another handy app that had to be created by the end-user. Sony just doesn't see why people hack and mod their units... Meh, ohwell. Great release!

I don't believe you're getting the point. Users want the PSP to do certain things, and Sony thumbs their nose at it, so the user has to crack their unit and make it themselves. Just because you believe the PSP is a personal unit and defeats the purpose of multi-profiles doesn't mean it's a bad idea or a failed one at that. Some people unfortunately don't have $400 laying around to get two units or even three, especially with the NGP right around the corner that will most likely sell for console-price. This wasn't a problem when Gameboys were around, those things were rather cheap on the market, so everyone basically could afford their own. Not the PSP, it's expensive compared to other units and this app only helps out a tight family low on their funds.

tl;dr It's a great app for those that need it and doesn't need to live up to your claims.
