PSP goes MySpace? PS3-PSP Friends List integration?

During Sony Computer Entertainment's Gamers Day, lots of stuff about the PS3 menu were dished out. One of which was the Remote Play demo, another would be of how the PSone would end up on the PSP's memory stick. While the XMB menu of the PS3 has all these features, where does this leave the PSP?

Connect!Sony announced that we should expect a new update for the PSP very soon - maybe even released simultaneously with the PS3 launch. But what will the update's features be? Sony's keeping mum about it. Details are scarce, and once again, we are left to assume for ourselves. (It's times like this that we feel like The Question from "Justice League Unlimited" - seeing connections everywhere)

Now, speaking of connections, one of the features that's going to be in the PS3 is the ability to create a Friends List. It's going to be something similar to AIM, and you'd have to register for the PlayStation Network. Go online, and you see players that you've already come across in other games and those that you've added.

Put two and two together, and you'd be led to think "Oh golly, Miss Molly, they're going to incorporate that feature into the new PSP update!" Or will they? Whether or not they will, it's still going to be a big benefit for the PSP owners.

Think about it... All those friends you'd be able to play games with online, in one simple menu in the PSP. Annoying gamers that you want to ban, or new friends that you'd want to add. If Sony's trying to milk their PlayStation line-up, they'd have to increase functionality once the next PSP update comes out.

If they do integrate the feature into the PSP, then owners of both PSP and PS3 would be having a ball with being able to contact their Friends List whether on the next-gen or on the portable. It's going to be another great feature of interconnectivity of both Sony consoles.

This functionality will be provided through Xfire(AIM like program popular among PC gamers) Xfire on psp would be awsome

This sounds very familiar...hmm, a chatting service available on multiple platforms, both portable and stationary, huh? Like AIM? I'd say it IS AIM, except you can't use it with the one device that always has a keyboard and has access to cheap, easy-to-find microphones: a computer.

Now, if I'm the odd one out here and people actually find all this PS3-PSP connectivity impressive, it could turn out one of a few ways: it will convince PS3 owners to buy a PSP, it will convince PSP owners to buy a PS3, or it will deter non-PS3 owners from buying a PSP (if the connectivity becomes too much of a focus). The second one seems extremely unlikely, as there are plenty of bigger factors to whether someone will buy a PS3 (price, availability, games, whether blu ray takes off, etc). The first is fairly likely, and I'm assuming that's Sony's goal. However, the third can happen as well. In fact, if the connectivity becomes necessary to use some of the features of both consoles, it may deter people from buying either one because they cannot or do not want to buy one of the two. It also won't give the PSP much of an edge over the DS, because Nintendo mentioned the goal of transferring media between the Wii and the DS long before Sony started talking about this stuff (wow, what a coincidence).

The main problem here isn't whether either system is "good" or worth buying, but rather Sony's apparent belief that people care as much about the brand as the systems themselves. Ultimately, the DS's triumph over the PSP proves that Sony can't simply rely on brand loyalty to sell systems and concepts. Nintendo learned that with the N64 losing to the PS1, and Sony should have learned it with the PSP losing to the DS.
