A lot of PSP owners love knowing every single thing about their handhelds, and the upcoming PSP Go is another new toy to disassemble and analyze. We're still roughly a couple of months away from launch, though, so all you tech savvy folks out there might want to look through these specs compiled by Digital Foundry.

PSP Go - Image 1

First of all, the PSP Go will of course launch with a brand new firmware full of new options and tweakables. The pre-release sample Digital Foundry played around with came with OFW 5.70, although that may change when the Go hits retail. A lot of the differences between the Go's firmware 5.70 and the currently available 5.51 deal with the XMB, specifically the Settings area. Here's what they found:
  • Network Update is now listed as System Update, but, curiously, has the same options.
  • Video Settings obviously doesn't have the first four UMD-related toggles.
  • System Settings now has a "Your Birth Date" option (second from top), and a "Display Panel Close Option" toggle, which allows you to set it to either "Standard" (goes to a clock graphic) or "Enter Sleep Mode". Also "Battery Information" seems to be gone, as do UMD-related options, but there's a "Format System Storage" option in addition to the usual Memory Stick format option.
  • Power Save Settings loses the "Backlight Auto-Adjust" option for some reason.
  • There's a new "Bluetooth Device Settings" entry, which consists of a toggle for switching Bluetooth on and off and a "Manage Bluetooth Devices" entry.
Another change is the introduction of a new "System Storage" folder similar to the Memory Stick one. This one is for the PSP Go's internal flash storage. The available space for users is 14.74GB formatted in FAT32.

Hardware-wise, Sony has introduced a few more proprietary doodads for the PSP Go. The USB cable is reportedly not conventional. The end that attaches to PC is of course the same as the ones we currently have, but the end that connects to the PSP Go itself is described as wider and thinner. The Audio-Video port has also been changed, so your old component cables likely won't work.

» New battery

Sony just announced a new high power Li-On battery. Is there a chance we gonna get that on PSP?

by dd409 - 2009-08-13 04:21
» Not Proprietary

The LG Glimmer uses a "wider and thinner" USB cable for charging and connecting to the computer that I assume to be the same as the Go's will be. I'm sure that there are other devices that already use it as well.

» Not probable.

I would expect that a new battery type in the PSP would be one of the highlights of the unit. Marketers would be chomping at the bit to advertise a PSP with 10 hours of gaming or video watching life. (I just made up the 10 hour figure.) Either way, I think its highly unlikely that we'll see the new, and maybe expensive, battery in the PSP Go... but it would help out in justifying that stupid $250 price tag.

» got a quick question

why is japan getting the go in November and we are getting it in October? it has me thinking that the jap version is going to have something special in it or more time being put into it and also do you think that we will be able to download japan games from the psn store and transfer to the psp or will region codes will not be implied in this system?

» Larger markets.

The EU and US market are larger than the JAP market so it may be that they're going to try and satisfy the needs of the larger markets before focusing on home turf. Either way, its only a month so I doubt there will be any huge differences.

» RE: Not Proprietary

Yes, I think dd409 is right, there is a different type of mini-USB that is often used in cellphones and cameras that is wider and thinner (although I don't know why Sony didn't go with the super-small square USB now used on phones?) Hopefully that's the USB cable connection they're using.

by TheRockness - 2009-08-13 06:16
» The article says proprietary in the title.

How were you able to deduce that it was the same cable as the LG Glimmer?

» i wounder

sense the video out is the same slot as the power, would it charge while connected to the tv?

by jackspade - 2009-08-13 07:06
» microusb

Very possible and most likely MICRO-USB. in which case it will be only SLIGHTLY harder to get a usb cable. not that every 3rd party company in existence isnt going to have their own version a week after launch

"Power Save Settings loses the "Backlight Auto-Adjust" option for some reason."

Well duhhh... is this some super high-tech ***** or what?

Auto adjusting means that the display changes the brightness by the surrounding light.

So if you turn on the powersaving, the screen will be dimmed to the lowest settings.

If auto adjust is still enabled the power saving would be useless.

C'mon use some logic... or replace your outdated mobile phone

by TheRockness - 2009-08-13 08:24
» well...

I think what they're saying is that its gone. Whether Power Saving is turned on or off, you just don't have "Backlight Auto-Adjust" any longer as an option.

That's what I took from the story though.

did i miss something?

» therockness is right

you guys should look up the definition of proprietary

by Vman00 - 2009-08-13 10:24
» i do that to my ipod

i stick it in the cable box for it to charge.

» The one spec that won't have me buying one...

$249

by dd409 - 2009-08-13 15:16
» Why I'm not getting a Go:

Just as a comparison, I could get a PSP Go for $249, or I could get an XBox 360 Elite for $299 (after the September price drop).

Which is the better value? (The answer is the XBox).

Charging $249 is ridiculous. According to Amazon, a PSP 3000 and a 16GB memory stick together (both new) will run you at $211.49. The 3000 system alone, $159.99. So you gotta wonder why they charge ~$38 more for a smaller screen, a worse controller setup, and the lack of the ability to read UMDs.

Sony's reason (quoted from an earlier QJ article): "When you introduce a new piece of hardware you have the opportunity to say there is a certain premium that is associated with it." Basically, they charge that much because they can.

I believe that the "haters" of the PSP Go have a well-founded dislike of the new system. Personally, I'm sticking with my 3000 and Photofast adapter (32GB memory stick is great).

» What???

Who compares buying a PSP Go to a XBox 360? That's like saying your not going to buy a new mp3 player because you can get a home stereo system for the same price.

Go ahead and by your XBox 360 and lets see how that works out when you want to play it on the go!

by dd409 - 2009-08-14 03:04
» @D.Dark

That's what I have my 3000 for. I made the comparison to show how much more you could get for a similar price >.>

» Well, truk...

truk, it doesn't say per se that you have to buy everything again, but...

- We already knew that any UMD games would have to be re-purchased online, that's understandable...

- But the mini-USB cable and the TV-out cable on the PSP 2000/3000 doesn't work, for what I honestly perceive as no good goddamn reason.

by TLC_Nyk - 2009-08-15 09:43
» Heres what I think.

I think they think we are idiots.

If you have a PSP then you would be an idiot to buy a PSP GO.

If you don't have a PSP why start now idiot.

Wait I got it if you own a DSi maybe you would buy a Go... the word proprietary means something.... like to non-idiots it means stay away stay far away.... Anyone want to put their hands on the top of the stove again?

I will not be burned by the "P" again.

I don't remember reading anywhere where someone asked to be able to pay for everything again.

Buy a DSi at least it has a camera if your going to buy everything again.

by truk - 2009-08-15 11:33
» if you have a psp dont by a go..

simple.

i dont even know why that would be an issue for anyone who already has a psp. if you've got money to buy ANOTHER psp, then you obviously dont mind spending money, so buy another cable.

by downloader1122 - 2009-08-16 07:19
» PS Store

I reckon you will be able to download games from any of the regional PS Store's by creating a PSN account for that region.

The only catch is you need credit on your account to purchase games, which could mean importing PSN tickets at a high price.
