PSP Go clock speed maxes out at 480Mhz according to FCC

Some documents from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are suggesting that the new PSP Go may be packing more power under its sliding exterior than what Sony has officially revealed.

Contrary to official statements from Sony that peg the PSP Go's top clock frequency at 333 MHz, the FCC's test reports indicate that the PSP Go actually maxes out at 480 MHz. Perhaps the extra power is for the in-game XMB. Games would likely still be locked at the 333MHz max for uniformity across all of the PSP SKUs.

You can check out the FCC reports here. The 480MHz max clock frequency is mentioned in page 3 of the Test Report 1 pdf. The official tech specs can be viewed here. You can also discuss this over at the QJ.NET PSP forums (thanks, bsanehi!).

i can't wait till DarK AleX realease's firmware for it

if it has 480mhz we can get more power out of it and it will be really awsome

more power is allways nice

(as long as its in the ussers controll)

I thought the in-game XMB (on GO) simply suspended the game, in which case irShell does that now with 333MHz (or 222MHz).

Also how long is the battery going to be at 480MHz, because I doubt when they said the batteries life they meant when the PSP is clocked that high.

Also I don't think they can use the 480MHz on games because that would alienate the 1-3000 series. Unless of course they made the game downloadable specifically for the PSP GO, like from what I heard about the new Resident Evil, although I take that with a grain of salt.

# the extra powerVman00 2009-07-03 09:45
i think would be there for the developers. they could make a game that can run on both 333 and 480. even if they don't, they can add extra stuff for the psp go, therefor drive psp go sales at the cost of alienating a lot of people

i hope one of these new release could push sony to lift any restrictions on the processor like what GOW:CoO did. GO PEACE WALKER!

This is huge news if it is true. We could see Daedalusx64 at full speed and it would drastically improve rendering rates on new games.

I am now interested in the PSP Go!

But couldn't that be including the GPU?

333+133+(some extra from other chips) = 480

means games could essentially have greater graphics and could have more interactions ingame. That is probably why Gran Turismo PSP looks so amazing.

The extra power is probably just for running extra things in the background like the A2DP bluetooth and whatever else they need if they using a new XMB to make it run smoother, but yeah a 44% faster processor would be plenty to get daedalus finally chugging along at full speed if this thing gets hacked.

I was scared to get one but now its a definite. The white one is sexy but, i'll probably end up getting black.

ME was for background but it is now going to be used to help with sound emulation. Those OTHER processors could be used in the same way.

all it is, is that they have removed the GPU. to save space, the GPU on the PSP Go! has been removed, in its place, more processing power on the CPU so it can handle both the physics as well as graphics. this design is prominent on the iTouch and iPhone 3G. where the iTouch has a 580Mhz processor, that handles both the graphics as well as other things. do note, the iTouch has graphics worse than the ps3, but almost a processor double the speed.

# the processor speed is just to compensate for somethingcelebbb 2009-07-03 14:45
they could be compensating for the lack of a GPU, allowing for a smaller device. it could also be compensating for less ram, IE speed the device up so there can be a larger bus, therefore less ram.

i hope to see video calls on skype with the camera atachment. it would also be funny if the go could listen to music while ingame before the ps3. the irshell can already download stuff listen to music and watch a movie all at the same time. just imagine adding phone calls via skype to it... amazing. i also hear something about tethering 3g phones via bluetooth to it to have internet just about anywhere... that would be awsome. my parents have one of those verizon usb internet cards cuz theirs no internet provider at their house. i bet it would be eazy enuf to make a pc app that would tell the go that it was a 3g phone and get online like that

I hope you meant PSP, not PS3.

I don't think that's what they did though. What about compatibility with older games?

They don't seem to have any shortage of space with the removal of the UMD, either.

I'd like to hold on to my PSP-1000, and if homebrewers start getting lazy and stop bothering with the old PSPs, well there'd be quite a few upset people out there

Bluetooth will take a little bit of the CPU, and the rest is to compensate for the lack of GPU in this model.

No, Daedalusx64 is never going to work on a PSP. It's a nice tech, proof-of-concept project.

Number of buttons on an N64 controller- 10.

Number of buttons on PSP- 8.

That's kind of an epic fundamental flaw.

Since the PSP Go is the same platform as a PSP I doubt we'll see specific software for the Go. The case with the DS is totally different - they included much more new tech that wasn't backwards compatible with the original Lite. The Go is just a PSP without a UMD drive but with Bluetooth instead. That is the only difference. Both can accomondate 16gb storage etc.

What I do think we'll see is a higher clockrate to get games running smoother. Like if you unlock the PSP clockspeed to 333mhz you get shorter load times, less frameskip and slowdown.

This could be an effort to bring much quicker loading to the Go. But I doubt we'll see a split in the market over software requirements.

It could be useful as long as devs don't use the full power for their game engine. Because that would mean you wouldn't be able to play these games properly on older PSPs.

What you guys don't seem to get is that the more games and or newer games that are released are going to be changing structure, For that so will the new PSP Go. I would almost bet that it would be a million times harder to hack the psp go then a regular psp. Since it's that powerful maybe firmware has been taken out? See these are the things that we don't know! Don't speculate because that door for homebrew on the go may never ever open again on any new psp. Sony wants to eliminate custom firmware and homebrew...

Have you played daedalus? No games user all the buttons. Usually they use either the cpad+dpad or cpad+joystick in an n64 game. Since there are many different controller configs I have not encountered a game that doesn't work.

Secondly in is no longer a proof of concept, maybe back in R9/R10 it could have been but since then it has inproved in speed over 50%. SSB/mariokart/starfox/mario64/ectect run damn near perfect. When it is ported to the ME we will see another 10-15% jump and if the pspgo is hacked and daedalus runs on it I promise you the majority of the games will be full speed(44% jump in speed).

I can now get past the steep price and seriously consider getting a "Go". As soon soon as they crack this machine, I'll see about getting one. 480Mhz... Wow.
