PSP doing a Virtual Console? Sony wants non-Sony classics on PSP |

"We're on the PSP without an emulator, Link." "I know, isn't it great?"
While the PSP homebrew community's been enjoying emulators since... ever... Sony is only just wising up to the idea that there are old fogeys out there who want to play retro games on the PSP. According to John Koller, the table is open right now for even non-Sony games to appear as downloads on the PSN.
In general thereÂ’s a lot of discussion about [publishers'] back catalogs that will finally find its way to PlayStation Network in the back half of this year. PSOne is included, but everything is on the tableÂ…
We look for some of those big hits from all of the past games in their history and look for ways we can bring them over. ItÂ’s not always easy. ThereÂ’s obviously technical areas that need to be bridged. But when those are solved, consumers will see a wide variety of retro games and brand new games coming to PSN.
Sounds like the kind of service Nintendo is already offering on the Wii's Virtual Console. Certainly mature of them to offer non-Sony games as well. Retro games will certainly be a welcome sight on the PSN, especially some classic ones from the SNES era. Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past first please, Sony.

To be honest I do all this with emulation anyways as do a lot of PSP owners. What I'd prefer is more focus given on lesser known classics that came out on systems not as well known globally such as the Amiga. Maybe I'm just saying that cos I want Factor 5 to do an all new (but still 2D) Turrican for PSN with online co op, but still. Point is theres plenty of great games from the past that most of todays younger gamers have no clue about, but the obvious 'classics' keep getting all the attention yet again.

Nice idea though. Rakugaki Showtime and Panzer Bandit would be much appreciated. Fankoo :)

They now relalize late in the game that there is money to be had, while we've been emuing it up for years for free.
I don't want to speak for everybody here and
there are some great classics out there (Joust) ect... but once you go modern gaming it's hard to look back and stay both excited and entertained with older games, I mean you really needed to love the game big time in order for it to be worth it in todays gaming.

There are exceptions to this but as a whole modern gaming isn't all that exciting.

I don't have a Wii, but is Saturn on Wii's virtual console now or is it going to be?

Yeah that probably not going to happen, but I can dream, right? lol

I think that since we have idiots already paying money for the Virtual Console games, then what makes you think they're not going to for the PSP/PS3?
It's just too bad Sony didn't get into this sooner as it would have been like a portable XBox Live or Virtual Console and it would have definitely garnered quite a bit of sales.

At least Sony would add features like online multiplayer like they did to Rampart/etc

From what i read I think more to arcade games. Not stuff from Nintendo.

i've already got every other game on here i can possibly dream of, thanks to homebrew coders and their emulators.
If they put something GOOD on PSN, i will buy it.

The PSP's ability to emulate a lot of older systems is a done and dusted affair, pretty much everyone on this site already does it.
For sure there's still an option to exploit this market, but I think it would have far less impact than it has had for Nintendo.

Most of Nintendo's games are registered trademarks, and Nintendo (still on the harware side) probably will NEVER let them go...

Sega Game Gear and Sega Master System Libraries
Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Libraries
Atari / Coleco and anything in the 70s 80s and 90s
PC engine etc libraries
retro arcade games
i mean almost all besides Nintendo owned system/games can be licensed to PSP.
then in the future we can line up sony psp as it prints money like what wii and ds did.
but as for me, im targetting a single bluray disc that holds all retro games (no cd based games) plus emulator ever.
