Legal Downloading Of Non-Sony Classics To PSP - Image 1

"We're on the PSP without an emulator, Link." "I know, isn't it great?"

While the PSP homebrew community's been enjoying emulators since... ever... Sony is only just wising up to the idea that there are old fogeys out there who want to play retro games on the PSP. According to John Koller, the table is open right now for even non-Sony games to appear as downloads on the PSN.

In general thereÂ’s a lot of discussion about [publishers'] back catalogs that will finally find its way to PlayStation Network in the back half of this year. PSOne is included, but everything is on the tableÂ…

We look for some of those big hits from all of the past games in their history and look for ways we can bring them over. ItÂ’s not always easy. ThereÂ’s obviously technical areas that need to be bridged. But when those are solved, consumers will see a wide variety of retro games and brand new games coming to PSN.

Sounds like the kind of service Nintendo is already offering on the Wii's Virtual Console. Certainly mature of them to offer non-Sony games as well. Retro games will certainly be a welcome sight on the PSN, especially some classic ones from the SNES era. Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past first please, Sony.

Chrono Cross was PS1. I think you mean Chrono Trigger.

Is it even likely Nintendo would allow one of their key features on the Wii (one of my Wii owning friends now solely only uses it for the VC after becoming bored with actual Wii games) to be on a Sony product?

To be honest I do all this with emulation anyways as do a lot of PSP owners. What I'd prefer is more focus given on lesser known classics that came out on systems not as well known globally such as the Amiga. Maybe I'm just saying that cos I want Factor 5 to do an all new (but still 2D) Turrican for PSN with online co op, but still. Point is theres plenty of great games from the past that most of todays younger gamers have no clue about, but the obvious 'classics' keep getting all the attention yet again.

» Double meh

Why wasn't all this done years ago? If we are only a year away from the handheld's successor, this all seems a bit moot, unless we can port any retro purchases from our PSP's to our PSP2's? I'm not interested in paying for anything twice, thanks very much.

Nice idea though. Rakugaki Showtime and Panzer Bandit would be much appreciated. Fankoo :)

» Little late SONY

Money grubbin mutha fuxrz!

They now relalize late in the game that there is money to be had, while we've been emuing it up for years for free.

I don't want to speak for everybody here and

there are some great classics out there (Joust) ect... but once you go modern gaming it's hard to look back and stay both excited and entertained with older games, I mean you really needed to love the game big time in order for it to be worth it in todays gaming.

» meh part 3

I've done modern gaming, and to be frank some of it is quite horrible compared (storyline and content wise). Mostly what I see is flashy graphics with an age old gimick.

There are exceptions to this but as a whole modern gaming isn't all that exciting.

» .

Many people can already play those games on PSP, and A Link to the Past is a Nintendo game... Zero chance of it appearing on the PSN...

by squall_83 - 2009-03-03 07:49
» i hope

i hope this means they will develop a SNES emulator that we can exploit like the PS1 emulator to run any game. that would be soooo nice to have a perfect running SNES emulator finally on PSP.

by PimpFriedRice - 2009-03-03 08:11
» Why only Nintendo?

Maybe Sony can get Sega to code their own official Saturn emulator the same way Sony coded the PSX emulator for PSP. Although PSX was the better system, Saturn still had it's fair share of gems.

I don't have a Wii, but is Saturn on Wii's virtual console now or is it going to be?

by Roflunit - 2009-03-03 08:49
» Yay!

Yay I can not wait to play Dreamcast games on my PSP!

Yeah that probably not going to happen, but I can dream, right? lol

by cory1492 - 2009-03-03 08:50
» ...

Wanna bet they are going to do exactly what some nintento publishers did with retro catalogs? Take open source emulators, kill most of the advanced options and box it for sale with their old roms...

» HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Sony make me laugh... srsly!

by kloplop321 - 2009-03-03 09:47
» yeah, I bet so

They sure will, just like with the Wii.

by kupomogli - 2009-03-03 10:40
» It's not a bad idea.

We've already got dumbasses owning a Wii who end up paying 5 dollars for an NES game. PSX games on the PSN are only 5.99. A far better deal if you ask me.

I think that since we have idiots already paying money for the Virtual Console games, then what makes you think they're not going to for the PSP/PS3?

It's just too bad Sony didn't get into this sooner as it would have been like a portable XBox Live or Virtual Console and it would have definitely garnered quite a bit of sales.

by Techni - 2009-03-03 11:59
» Nintendo has no choice in the matter

They didn't invent emulation of old systems, XBOX Live arcade was built off emulating old systems BEFORE the Wii came out. PS3 already has some old games emulated.

At least Sony would add features like online multiplayer like they did to Rampart/etc

by erefa - 2009-03-03 12:44
» Sony does right ...

Can't wait to play "Kernel Exploit.gb" on my PSP-4000 hrhr

by hush404 - 2009-03-03 12:56
» erm

Chrono Trigger was re-made for the PS1... thus it wouldn't be a stretch to see that title. You can forget Zelda tho. Honestly? Nintendo wouldn't let that go, ever!

From what i read I think more to arcade games. Not stuff from Nintendo.

by MitchenX - 2009-03-03 13:37
» MM9MM9MM9

they need to get mm9 on the PSP already! what a bunch of slackers!!

i've already got every other game on here i can possibly dream of, thanks to homebrew coders and their emulators.

If they put something GOOD on PSN, i will buy it.

by irwintorres727 - 2009-03-03 14:29
» great idea

some suggestions, mvc2, ikaruga, sfiii third strike.

by 1337-Scruffy - 2009-03-03 15:02
» hehe

i still think the LoZ games are better then anything thats been released officaly on PSP....

by Stealth! - 2009-03-03 16:13
» I really....

Want to see the PSN to have EA old time best game ROAD RASH. I mean all of them to be on the PSP/PS3. Damn I love that game back in the day. I think that was their best game they ever made.

by FORCE4121 - 2009-03-04 01:37
» n64

if they can get an nintendo 64 emulator working, i will be GREATLY impressed

by hypercoyote360 - 2009-03-04 05:09
» depends....

on what the games are. Compare Dragon Warrior 4 to Spyro the Dragon and I would definitely choose DW4 :)

by hypercoyote360 - 2009-03-04 05:12
» SERIOUSLY

Yeah, I couldn't figure out why they didn't release MM9 on PSP, it was a perfect fit! I mean come on, how much processing power could it take to run that game? I would have bought it twice to have one on the wii and one on the PSP. There's money to be had here Capcom, are you listening?!

by blackthorn - 2009-03-04 10:01
» well

The difference being that the Wii is a lot more difficult to hack than the PSP and doesn't have a lot of brew written for it in the emulation arena.

The PSP's ability to emulate a lot of older systems is a done and dusted affair, pretty much everyone on this site already does it.

For sure there's still an option to exploit this market, but I think it would have far less impact than it has had for Nintendo.

by MitchenX - 2009-03-04 16:27
» Sega on PSN

Sega is still a company that strives on software sales, and I for one don't want them to go away. Thanks to the Sonic Team, that probably will never happen...

Most of Nintendo's games are registered trademarks, and Nintendo (still on the harware side) probably will NEVER let them go...

by jmak0 - 2009-03-05 00:42
» don't think we'll get nintendo!

we will get all the namco, capcom, snk, sega, squaresoft games but don't think we'll get nintendo! They are so protective of their franchises, seriously! please prove me wrong

by xche78x - 2009-03-05 00:45
» and you forgot

everything else besides nintendo

Sega Game Gear and Sega Master System Libraries

Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Libraries

Atari / Coleco and anything in the 70s 80s and 90s

PC engine etc libraries

retro arcade games

i mean almost all besides Nintendo owned system/games can be licensed to PSP.

then in the future we can line up sony psp as it prints money like what wii and ds did.

but as for me, im targetting a single bluray disc that holds all retro games (no cd based games) plus emulator ever.
