PSP 3000? (image from PSPChina.net) - Image 1

Did you think that the rumored PSP-3000 model was pure, unadulterated bunk? Well, think again. Sony has already sent a new PSP model marked PSP-3001 to the FCC for testing.

The FCC reports are dated July 7, with the testing dates listed as July 9 to July 16. According to Ask-wi.com, FCC certification usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks, so that part is pretty much done. You can check out the reports here.

There's a lot of pretty technical stuff on the FCC reports and while there's no big "Pandora-proof" seal anywhere there, I'd it's pretty fair to assume that this new model would carry some sort of heavy protection against Pandora, just like the PSP-2000 TA-088v3.

It seems all we have to do now is wait for official announcements from Sony. Christmas would probably be a safe bet for the PSP-3000's release, but it could be sooner. Keep checking back here for more updates.

» Interesting.

Their request for short-term confidentiality was filed on 7 July '08, and it's only for last 45 days... this means that if they were approved exactly as the letter states, we'll be seeing photos soon.

Bah, I just got my Slim a few months ago. I don't want to have to upgrade again in a few months time :\

by SolidXnake - 2008-08-14 00:47
» Neo uhmm..Upgrades!

I have my PSP phat and it works same way as the slim one I think even better. Also, I wouldnt want a PSP with phone feature in it, it's just doesnt feel right holding that huge thing on your ear. Also I wouldnt want it to be smaller, things tend to change and be more crappy when that happens.

by chessboxer - 2008-08-14 01:23
» hmm

It would be cool if they added Bluetooth instead of infrared, found on the PSP1XXX range. A2DP and some of the OBEX stuff would rule, although battery life would be shot in the face.

by Djhg2000 - 2008-08-14 01:23
» I agree

The PSP Phat (or in my case PSP-1004CW) is better than the PSP-2000, mostly because of the IR port (yes that old technology is still unbeatable in consumer electronics, mostly because data transfer is easy and minimal data is needed to initiate communications) . Also because I really need the 1.50 kernel.

by Hekynn - 2008-08-14 02:26

they have better totaly upgraded from the slim with bluetooth more ram etc

lol slims even without the ir port have good transfering

you ever try adhoc file transfer or hell even adhoc gaming on a slim.haha its fast as hell and works just as good.only thing the ir was used for was infared technology.meaning the few remote controlled toys that still used that ancient technology and very few tvs that still use infared ports

everything nowadays.like the slim is all wireless baybe =P

by Fiska - 2008-08-14 04:29
» yea guys

less ram + moar better amiright?

Just kidding. I found the IR feature useless, even with that remote homebrew program that WAS pretty dope. I like my more RAM, makes games snappier for sure.

first the 3000 model shown, could have been a load crap, and proven fake from the pictures

i could say i own a psp2

and in 10 years when sony releases itll be proven i actually did own it ???????

anyway i was about to buy a new slim, mainly for the more ram, 1.5 kernal is dead theres a few good apps still on it, but i never used it anyway N64 emulators etc

for me to buy a new psp it will need atleast 2 new things over the slim

bluetooth and HDD

if it doesnt have that i aint buying it,

touch screen is a gimmic and serves no purpose whatso ever in games, maybe in a few puzzle games BUT IS IT WORTH IT NOOOOOOOOOOO

until virtual reality comes out i hope theres no more nintendo consoles, seriously why settle for minimal technology, we want virtual reality, lol

yh phone, aint for me, nor was any of the music or video features on the psp, i want it just for surfing and playing

i have a phone that can play music and isnt as bulky as the psp, and i dont care for videos, takes up too much needed space anyway

by kupomogli - 2008-08-14 04:51
» Both fat and slim are just as good.

The only different is the slim has more battery life when using a phat battery, more ram, and the TV hookup.

For me, the battery has never really been a problem. When I play it elsewhere, it lasts around 4 hours with the original PSP battery and I'm ready to stop playing by then anyways. If I happen to want to keep playing, I always bring the charger with me and continue gaming that way. The rest of the time I'm playing it I'm usually at home with the charger/mini USB which I hook up to my computer, and a M/M cord hooking my PSP up to my speakers for stereo sound.

» Bluetooth

Why do I read Bluetooth everywhere?

The PSP will never have Bluetooth. Why should it? To transfer files with some Mobiles, to make the homebrew scene happy and... and... errr... make the PSP unsecure because Bluetooth's security is a joke?

Bluetooth is slow and insecure. I think in the future all mobiles will use W-LAN.

by omegaridley - 2008-08-14 06:45
» maybe, maybe not

I have my slim, and a phat, i like them both, but i think the slim is better. The only thing IR is good for is the wireless keyboard thing. Why would u want to control a TV with a PSP? Thats what a TV remote is for, I have used my phats IRdA to control a tv, it works well, but at the same time, eh... i have a TV remote. Using a phat PSP for tv is like buying a $200 TV remote:|

The PSP slim has more power, and as said above, wireless is better, i transferred my oddworld game from my PSP slim to my friends PSP slim, and it was FAST, and it was a 1GB file! However, i tried trasnferring it from my slim to my phat, killed about an hour:P

But what of this PSP-3000? Sounds oddly enough they are making a new one, but then again ya know. What will be different? oooh i know!!! pandora proof, ggaayy! Well then again, the slim was said to be pandora proof, well it doesnt seem to be;) If I am to get this new PSP, It better be slim(or not too phat), and it better have some more power than the PSP slim and can do all this without killing the battery like its a ragdoll XD

All i have to say is, The phat is good, slim is better, this 3000, well noone will know till we buy it:)

by DontCryIfYouDie - 2008-08-14 07:00
» erm

um i doubt oddworld was 1gb file seeing as ps1 games are on 700mb CD-R. but i do agree that i really only use the ir for ir keyboards. we will wait to see what new features and improvements come with this

i JUST got a slim with my own money a couple of days ago. Took me FOREVER to get the money cuz i doan have a job. And the worst part was, for some reason, my dad made it my only birthday present -_- and i had to buy it @_@

Sony better not screw me over by making this new hunk of *****. >_> Even now, i don't have a lot of money in my bank account because of this.

by Justingraziano - 2008-08-14 08:40
» ...

There's not really much more they could do to the PSP line without actually releasing a new system (PSP 2). A touch screen would be useless since no current games could use it and I don't think they would release a new system just for an added HDD (after all the memory is already at 16GB and probably going to 32GB soon, no reason to add a HDD. HDD's are slower, they make a lot of noise, and they drain battery much much quicker then flash memory, not to mention there much more delicate). Bluetooth is another thing that they couldn't really embed since the current games wouldn't be compatible with it. The only thing they really could do is patch Pandora and no one would buy it then (and maybe add a slot loading UMD drive, that would be nice but still, no one would buy it just for that).

i think i'll stick with my psp phat..does everything i need it to do ( 3.90 M33-3 w/ 4GB stick ) all im waiting for is for a 16GB stick and im straight.

dude, you can keep that to yourself. plus i can't get a job cuz i JUST turned 16.

doan be so negative to ppl. Why did you say that anyway? jw. i mean, obviously, you just said that for effect. Not, a good thing >_>

haha yeah ppl your right, the touchscreen would suck. Plus it'll get annoying cuz the screen'll have finger prints all over it @_@ Look at the DS, the only successful part about it was the fact that a "Guitar Hero" game came out on it. Also, the guitar hero DS game ruins the screen, it makes the DS battery life run out faster, and the other crappy fact is the fact that it only has 4 fret things. woah 0_0 i wonder what a GH for the PSP would be like =0

@Sony

making a touch screen wouldn't make ppl want to buy the new PSP 3000, any sooner. If anything it might lower the chance of ppl buying it. but before all you ppl argue with that staement, there are a lot of ppl out the who would buy it.

lol i bet DAX would hack it pretty fast xD

If Sony makes this pandora proof, I really wouldnt buy this. I dont have the money (and about alot of other cfw users) to buy a brand new Psp and the games (equivalent to amount of my memory stick Isos) when mine is working fine. They tried to pull indentical crap to all of us when 2000-series came out. I still havent found a reason to upgrade yet for price of 100$ for a trade in. Just dont fall for this crap every

I saw the FCC stuff, and on one they have a drawing of a PSP, which shows where the FCC stickers will go. If that's what it looks like, it's EXACTLY the same as the Slim. I really hope it doesn't look like that.

Well, what Sony could do is release a Pandora-proof PSP without adding much. They simply have to mass produce them, and to the point where it makes up the majority of PSPs sold. Conspiracies :)

IR port is still very useful. Like for changing temp on Public Air Conditioners and changing channels on Public/school TVs.

I hope you didn't keep the CPU speed at 222 Mhz, try 300 Mhz.

The idea of controling you TV via PSP is that the PSP can be a universal remote, Therefore you use one remote to control multiple devices. Now do you see, or do I have to explain further? Now if you combine this with Remote Play and the Location Free Player you'll have an awesome remote control well worth $200. No to mention it other features.

Who said the BlueTooth was to be used for the games? I was under the impression that it was for transfering files to other mobile devices like phones.

Having a BT enabled PSP would open us up to a huge world of peripherals instantly and things would -really- start to get interesting. A keyboard and mouse + open source office suite would kill off the need for a laptop for simple word processing and number crunching. The browser would actually become somewhat useful. Skype that can be operated without touching or being connected physically to the PSP itself would be finally viable. CFW and talented homebrewers would really have a lot more to work with and without a doubt the functionality of the PSP would explode.

You have to think like Sony. Not like a homebrew user.

You need drivers for all those peripherals. Sony wont write dozens of drivers just because someone could possibly want to use "BT Keyboard XYZ".

Office Suite? How many people are going to use something like that? Not enough to justify all the afford needed to program something like this. And then even Open Source?

And Skype via Bluetooth?

And as I said:

Using Bluetooth keyboars and headsets is like broacasting to everyone what you type/hear. Bluetooth-Sniffing is so easy. Everybody can do this.

Sony just doesn't have enough reasons to include Bluetooth. Or do you really think they include this just to make the homebrew scene happy?

This is one of the top reasons why Sony wants to shut down CFW. Piracy. Plain and simple. If piracy wasn't possible on the PSP and only general homebrew, yes, they'd still complain, but it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

Turning the game format away from UMD is a dangerous decision to make. Given that flash memory is still rather pricy with comparison to a hdd for say the PS3, downloadable content in the range of Gigabytes is currently unrealistic for most PSP owners. This will change in the near future with 32Gb sticks and larger on the horizon. Having a larger capacity for games will also allow for games with more content and quality. Often mused by developers is the capacity of the UMD limits their creativity. That and multiple discs is not 'as' reasonable an option for a portable gaming platform. Adding onboard flash memory would be nice, especially as a cache for increased browser performance (more RAM too). I believe that Mini-Blu-Ray at this point, would cost far too much for Sony to develop and incorporate into the PSP. Battery drain would rise significantly also.

Here's my 2cents:

- Dual battery capability would be AWESOME! Longer play, plus hot swapping for virtually unlimited play!

- Onboard memory (minimum 512mb to be used as a cache for internet apps, larger if for games)

- Increased RAM (no brainer as to why)

- Bluetooth for wireless headphones and microphone (A2DP please)

- No touchscreen (The PSP is better as a tough device, add a typical touchscreen and you make it more frail

- I've got more, but short on time. more later...

by Xis - 2008-08-15 06:46
» Exactly

most of these would be included in a psp2 and if sony wants to do this 10 year thing its not coming for another 2-3 years if not more but most of these features will put the PSP back up to about 250$ and that wouldnt be what sony wants of the PSP so sorry to tell you most of these things are useless (besides for homebrews) in this gens market and by the time its time few a new these things will be upgraded and out dated like mini hdds samsung made they are small as hell but they are making small flash like hdds also so MAYBE they'd be doin this check engaget for some of those things Sony wanted to do this befor just dont see it happenin

by mysterysword - 2008-08-15 07:07
» true

Yeah, changing the game format would be risky.

I really want an internal HDD for the PSP, or at least someway for the PSP to work with external HDDs.

As for more RAM, it seems unlikely, unless Sony adds more stuff to the PSP that requires more RAM. More RAM + more money.

by Xis - 2008-08-15 07:09
» Yea I think you could be right about most of this

BT is prolly the only thing to be included amoung a couple of others like ram onboard flash all for reasons already sed by abouve comment. But if Most of these Fabled features'll put PSP back up to the $200+ mark and this isnt what Sony wants from its portable the Mini HDD by samsung is a possibilty its kinda cheap (hell even the Sony pro duos are Samsung "Sonys little sister") BT for communication features like he sed and Mic def a touch screen no but an unfortunate possiblity it not that expensive but itd take away from what the PSP is.

If Sony want to do this 10 year wit PSP thing it'll be about 2-3 years befor we see some of these feats in a PSP2 that way most of these things'll be dated and newer gimmicks and such will come along for the masses to just eat up besides I never got a 2K but I'd get a 3K I'd be makin a reasonable upgrade from a PSP 1K the ram and other features of a 2K can be emulated or replaced or I can coupe or wouldnt use any way on my PSP 1K CFW and Homebrew

We have our homebrew and i feel its added so much to the psp for us US psp buyers im not willing to give that up. They dont market many games now days for the psp that are worth buying. I was buying lots of psp games but the last game that was any good was ff and syphon filter logans shadow. There releasing crap now patapon and games like that dull me i have to have fps or 3rd person action. Monster hunter freedom 2 was pretty good except no infrastructure which is retarded considering i dont know anybody that has a psp and even if they did the chance of them having that exact game is pretty slim. I think that sony should allow game sharing of all the psp games so that if you have one disc your friends can share in the on the fun. I dont think theres anything a new model can offer me that i would be willing to pay another 200 bucks for since i just recently bought my slim and i have a phat also. I think sony should look to making a whole new psp with dual analogs, phone, camera, tv tuner, gps, music, video and a keyboard functionality. Do that and let dax have his way with the fw and i might buy it. Any of you fools that buy this new model and support sony making these retarded attempts at forking off a new product thats pretty much the same as the old are foolish.

lol, I sold my PSP Phat to someone. Then I had almost enough money to get the Slim (I got the rest needed). So then I bought a Slim. The Slim isn't too different from the Phat, but it is better.

I don't like FireFox that's why. The makers of the browser made rude comments to Apple and I refuse to use their browser because of it. I wanted to use Safari and IE 7 (on my PC) to browse QJ.NET, that's why I paid.

Why do you care about the position of the sticker? Isn't the sticker behind the battery like the PSP-1000?

Maybe this PSP model will have some form of Home capability/intergration, if this is true then this should sell really well.

The built-in Mic already sold it for me.

If only Sony would add a second Memory Stick slot and expanded Video capabilities.

I'll admit that his drug story gets the occasional chuckle; enough to keep his tool nice and hard. I mean that's the only reason I can see for him visiting this site or any other for that matter... find something to rant about; wait for replies; then the pants come down to do his business.

My point here is that his window of opportunity for a serious attempt for resolution came and went. I know from personal experience that trying to offer him help is like holding a hand out to a wild animal; there's no reasoning to be done here.

no, mr.x, they had a drawing of a PSP that showed where the stickers were. I don't care where the stickers go, I was referring to the drawing of the PSP (full drawing).

Actually Neil, there's plenty you can do. You can give me my refund, or fix the service (like you said you were going to... in March...) so that ads don't appear to those paying for PREMIUM. Ever think of that? Didn't think so.

ORRRR

You can just f*ck right off. The amount of time you spent whinging about $3 could have netted you THOUSANDS in man-whoring fees.

» Pandora Battery Magic Memory Stick

I say don't matter how much proofing they put into it. They will decrypt it and have pandora battery and magic memory stick in no time!

No, because unlike you FreePlay, I don't let people rip me off. Hell, if someone walked in your house and stole your PS3 right in front of you you'd probably say "noooooooo!, well, you may be able to take my PS3, but you can never take my love of sony!" then go crying cause you can't defend yourself.

» Doubt it

If sony comes up with another way to flash the psp then they wont use a battery period they will make the hardware to use some other type of way to do it then m33 has to find a way to figure out what they changed it to. Cause they have to have a way to repair the flash for when people send there psps back to sony when there screwed up. And homebrew will just have to figure out how there doing it again. I remember when the first vid on utube showed some guy in japan fixing a psp with a pandora now they will probably just be using something else.
