PSP-3000 has interlacing issues, visible scanlines?

Some pretty distressing news on the Sony handheld front: We've gotten wind of reports that the new PSP-3000 handhelds have some interlacing issues. Some scanlines not seen on the Slim have also been spotted on the PSP-3000's screen.

Some members on the U.S. PlayStation forums have said that the interlacing issues become really noticeable when fast-moving objects are on-screen. Forum member jasoncps posted the following pics for comparison:

The pic on the left is what the video should look like. The one on the right shows how it looks on the PSP-3000. It's not just videos too: games with fast-moving objects are also reportedly affected.

Thanks to Inception for the tip!

» YES

This is ABSOLUTELY true, and I noticed it right away. I knew it had to be the new LCD, or the way they were displaying video.

Take a look at these photos:

You can see some weirdness in the way the flash is reflected in the first one, and you can make out the scanlines quite clearly in the second.

» just sad.

So Much for the New LCD screen being better.

I guess if you can get passed Paying for a New PSP that has a screen that some would even say BAD just to have pics look better then the New 3000 PSP is for you =)

» LOL Sony...

The screen may be brighter and with a wider range of colors, but you forgot to mention the quality of the picture...

» keep in mind

lurking variables! REmember that only people with bad screens will go around posting on forums and putting up bad pictures. The people with good screens are playing on them right now. So don't let the complaints of a few skew your perception of the truth...

Sony messed up again.. unless this is fake.

» Instead of saying

Can you please post a close up picture of your 3000 screen doing all the speed test ? Your truth doesn't have any evidence baking it.

» I dont think its hardware...read this

This is taken from a user in the PSU

I'm not sure if it's a firmware problem or not... I have 5.00 on my PSP and it does not have these scanlines, however I did notice while playing Spyro on my TV, it did have some hideous scan lines that would not be there if I played it on a PS1. So maybe the firmware problem only effects the 3000s since they have a different motherboard?

» Are you sure it is not those looking diamond things?

My PSP has these weird dots like the same from syphon filter. Could it be the engine they use? Colors? LCD? who knows. Are you sure they were scan lines?

That's why I'm sticking with my psp slim :)

» 272i?

I got a PSP-3000, and I have noticed this problem. I kind of regret selling my PSP-2000 and buying this. Instead of a shadowing effect (which is horrible), we get interlacing errors (which is also horrible). at least the color detail is much improved. I sincerely hope it's something they can fix in a firmware update. If not, then I hope best buy will take it back.

» hmm...

I dont think a firmware update is gonna fix this, sony. Fix your godamn 3000 now. trying to make us waste 170 bucks on something strikingly similar to what we got, with some mic. and a claimed better brighter screen that has problems? What the hell? They really thought they could try to sell something not perfected yet and hope it goes good? They probably should have kept working and tested it more, but no, they need profits now! Thier only strong point in the 3000 with the screen has a flaw. Plus, no homebrew now for alot of psp users. They really gonna get alot of sales now with this gimmick. Im gonna laugh at sony as thier psp sales go down the toilet along with my *****.

Damn, that was so biased and I apololgize to those people that bought the 3000 already. You have been suckered out of 170$

Ha.

» umm who is trashtalking whom?

what i'm talking about is a statistical fact that mainly people with bad experiences post about a product.

you are the noob for assuming that because a few people have had a bad experience the new psp is bad.

by Binary - 2008-10-16 16:28
» I'd say

that a firmware update will fix that problem.

by StingBlah - 2008-10-16 16:41
» its partially hardware, and software

In older games devs hid bad animations with ghosting effect, which covers it up. This new psp has too fast of a response time, so the bad quality pictures from the old games shows up. The newer games will not have this problem...even some of the older (good quality) games should not. I know Wipoute Pure and Pulse work perfectly, as does God of War and Patapon.

» LOL

I would better stay with my PSP 2000, until sony dont come up with some psp phone or psp that can run PS2 titles... :)

» Pre-order...

...just got cancelled. I am freaking PISSED about this. Personally I've never noticed any ghosting on either my phat or slim, but the enhanced colour pallett appealed JUST enough to make me take another plunge. But if this is indicative of the quality, I'm not going to be conned into a new unit if it has issues.

» Stuck Pixels

Remember when the PSP phat first came out with all the stuck pixel screen problems? I'm sure Sony will fix this just like that was fixed.

I still have 27 stuck pixels on my original PSP.

by Metal Jody - 2008-10-17 04:02
» stuck pixels

i bought a brand new LCD for my PSP-1000 about 6 months ago. no stuck pixels. also it's much brighter than regular LCDs that come in a 1000, bright as the 5th brightness on PSP-2000. hard to believe but it's true.

by Silver-Tiger - 2008-10-17 04:26

that's why I will wait for the second series. The PSP Slim had also some it's start problems. probably the ones with the new colors will be better.

I gotta say, this is quite funny...

Seeing a guy with a bit of sense getting bashed for well, making sense.

This guy says that not every PSP-3000 has these issues, and you people rather assume that every PSP-3000 has them, instead of assuming that only a few have them ?

What is wrong with you people ? Do you like hating on Sony this much ?

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-10-17 15:42

I'm sticking with my PSP phat, there was never anything wrong with its design.

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-10-17 15:45

The screens just get dimmer over time. A new LCD made a difference I'm sure.

Sony did offer to replace PSP units with a lot of stuck pixels when it came out. Mine only had 1 :)

by Cactuar Knight - 2008-10-17 23:50
» That sucks

And I was just about to buy a 3000.

Oh well, my slim is good enough for me.

by ChocolateCrackles - 2008-10-18 05:46
» All about the TV

The interlacing renders correctly on an SDTV, it looks like a higher res 60fps now instead of a chunky 30fps. But it looks bad on the PSP screen and it looks awful on a 1080p LCD without framerate upscaling.

They need to come up with a motion deinterlacer for the console and a better filter option to output i or p for the TV..

by xythen - 2008-10-18 08:30
» Here's a good comparison video

Ok people, I've just made a video which should hopefully put to rest any arguments as to what the problems are with the new screen. See it here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isC1IOhQt_A&fmt=18

It also has extreme closeups which show the sub-pixel structure of both the Slim & Lite and the PSP-3000, which explains the "scanline-esq" look. Pay attention to the final 2 pictures which are annotated to show the ghosting of the PSP-2000 and the "interlacing" of the PSP-3000.

by XBrav - 2008-10-19 05:35
» Though...

I updated my PSP-1000 to 5.00 M33, and whether or not it was there before. I'm seeing scanlines when I move from screen to screen.
