Woot. What's to look forward to this year for the PSP? Yeah sure, Dissidia's on top of my list, but what else is there? True enough, there are unannounced titles already being worked on - and consider this a confirmation! Lots and lots of confirmation, that is! Following last week's announcement of PS3's 2009 line-up, we now have SCEA's PSP press release.

Yes! We will be getting LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, and Rock Band for the PSP - something long been rumored about. Surprisingly, Assassin's Creed will be making its way to the handheld too (about time, Ubisoft!).

For the tweens, there's Hannah Montana (with its own brand new PSP color model too) and the entire Petz series. And for the jocks, we're also getting the next round of EA Sports' Madden NFL and Tiger Woods PGA Tour.

Indeed, these titles are scheduled for release this year, 2009. Let's compress the press release details by title, shall we?
  • LittleBigPlanet - Fall 2009 release; the same "Play. Create. Share." gameplay will be implemented; will have new levels; not a dumbed-down port, will be built from the ground up.
  • MotorStorm: Arctic Edge - Fall 2009 release; developed by Bigbig Studios (Pursuit Force); set in Alaska (obvious from the title); will also see a PS2 release. Trailer here:

  • Rock Band: Unplugged - PSP-exclusive; to use Wi-Fi; to be the first PSP game to "include a fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North American and Europeans markets."
  • Assassin's Creed (PSP Entertainment Pack) - PSP-exclusive spinoff for the console game; bundle includes a Piano Black handheld, etc.; details to follow; to be released "later this year."
  • Hannah Montana (PSP Entertainment Pack) - part of new focus to also tap into female gamers; bundle introduces the new "Lilac" PSP (see pic below!), also includes a copy of Hannah Montana (rhythm game), a 2GB memstick, a Hannah Montana UMD (a selection of episodes from the TV series), and stickers; to be released in July.

Lilac PSP - Image 1

  • Petz - more for the tweens - Petz is invading the PSP, just as it did/does on the DS; will see releases for hamsterz, dogz, catz, dolphinz, tigerz, bunniez, and orcz.
  • Madden NFL 10 - has interconnectivity with PS3, more details to follow
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 - revamped gameplay modes for online, offline; more details to follow.
  • Dissidia: Final Fantasy - will be getting a summer release.
Dagnabbit. Now who says the PSP is dead? Man, it ain't over 'til it's over, alright.

» HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE PSP ISN`T DEAD!!! It came close for a while, but we`re still good! I actually bought Prinny and am enjoying it, and we`re gonna be seeing at least 3 awesome games! Sorry if I seem overly eccentric, but GoW3, LBP:PSP, Assasin`s Creed PSP, and Motorstorm PSP, I just... I think I just had a gaming orgasm, lol!

» great

cool ..if this games really are good ..i wont pirate them ..i hate people who pirate games on wich you can really see the strugle of the developers like World of Goo and many others...hopefully those that did pirate have now a way to make up for it for (REBORN PSP) ...sony should have let us do homebrew and filter only umd ..but then devs can start making crapy games because they will know they are going to be bought :|..I hope the new psp will beat down DS.not because i am a fanboy but psp has a much bigger potential than DS and technology is going ahead and we shouldnt pay nintendo for crappyer hardware.DS has lots of fun games and it was helped because of its NAME NINTENDO and super mario and all the lovely things we saw when we where young.I wont respond to any fanboyish comments .

» Rock Band...?

I'm hoping some how homebrew will allow us to create custom songs on Rock Band for the PSP.

How awesome would that be?

Not only will the game be pirated, but so will songs!

WOO! =P

My 2009 PSP lineup: LittleBigPlanet , Assassin's Creed, Rock Band, Dissidia, Patapon 2, and might give MotorStorm a try.

I am SO ready.

by Achooist - 2009-02-24 08:17
» Oops.

Forgot Resistance Retribution!

Nowww I'm SO ready!

by Gino D. - 2009-02-24 08:19
» Hmm?

What about Petz? No one likes Petz? Aww, that's a shame. I want a Petz: Orcz, Ubisoft! Make it work, chop chop! Or maybe Petz: Dragonz. That'd be waaaay cool.

(umm, OK, back to work, Gino...)

by Nine_Masquerade - 2009-02-24 08:40
» MOAR LBP!!

Yes! This is insane! I just hope MM is developing it still. How sick would it be to import your levels!?

by nyr2k2 - 2009-02-24 08:46
» yeah

I missed Dissidia, so I'll amend my statement to 4 good games. I'm not counting Madden and PGA, since those games are just annual iterations and their release isn't really news.

Pretty lame though that Petz and Hannah Montana play an integral part in any Sony press release.

» wowzor

by Mr Toasty - 2009-02-24 11:42
» @nyr2k2

UM. EXCUSE ME. HANNAH MONTANA IS THE BEST THING EVER.

/sarcasm

It's true, but oh well, the other ones there looked damn fine. Maybe we'll finally get a PSP game with a metacritic score over 91.

I'm interested to see how Rock Band is going to work as well.

Also: pursuit force sucks balls. Hand arctic edge over to a company who knows what they're doing.

by xploren - 2009-02-24 11:44
» Resurrection!

I'm looking forward to how the developers will implement a in-game store for the PSP. It's nice to see the PlayStation Network for the PSP starting to get fully utilized.

Uhhh, so wow, I am completely blown away by some of these titles, I never thought they would come out. I was going to say "Especially like Assassin's Creed!" then I realized, Rock Band and LittleBigPlanet are totally unexpected as well, and the words "not a dumbed down port" is the greatest. This is remarkable, kudos Sony. EA should take lessons from "not a dumbed down port."

by TheLastGuitarHero - 2009-02-24 23:11

You're a ***** and I hate you.

by sicksider - 2009-02-25 03:08

Sony must be kidding!! Assassin Creed? Rock Band on PSP? GOSH!! I thought it would never be possible to be in PSP.

Anyway..THANKS! GOOD GAMES TO PSP!! CANT WAIT...RELEASE IT FAST MAN..HAHA.

by fearlubu - 2009-02-25 05:50
» indeed

so did I...like 4 times lol

by NathanDrake - 2009-02-25 06:24
» cool stuffs

Thought Assassin's Creed was tedious as hell on my PS3 personally so I sold it very quickly after obtaining it, but hey if it gets fans of that game buying a PSP that's cool. I'm certainly interested in having LittleBigPlanet and Motorstorm around with me in my pocket.

Rock Band might be ok but those kinds of games sorta lose something when you don't get to use a fun big guitar controller. The way they did Guitar Hero on DS was an interesting attempt but just didn't really work that well.

by CityNightRush117 - 2009-02-25 08:28
» Wow

It's about time $ony put some thought into making the best portable ever into an even more best portable ever.

Now I can actually consider buying UMDs instead of looking at the game, saying it's crap, and walk off. I'm extremely curious at how Assassin's Creed will work (Dude, that was 360-only right? WTF is it doing on a $ony?). As for Rock Band, I knew it was only a matter of time before there was some guitar-game for the PSP, but I thought it would be Guitar Hero and a crappy GH Add-on. Although I guess I'll finally get to see what is so great about a sack-puppet game that apparently the PS3 makes the best thing ever.

Frickin Hanna Montana? WTF is that sh*t? Get a life Miley, no one who uses their PSP in the proper way is dumb enough to buy more of your sh*t. And a purple PSP? Yeah, that makes me respect you even more (Nope). It's one thing to buy a new PSP, but not a damn purple HM crap machine. That was a bad move $ony, let the real games like Assassin's Creed and Rock Band make their way onto your portable, not these Nintendo-quality titles -_-
