PS3 software sales double from last year, PSP game sales decline |

The latest numbers from Sony show that while the company suffered as a whole, their gaming division is a different story.
Sales of the PlayStation 3 and the PSP are on the up and up. PS3 game sales even doubled up from last year. More than doubled actually, with 21.1 million sold for the quarter, 10.7 million more from last year.
Unfortunately, PSP game sales seem to be going downhill, falling 0.8 million for this quarter, selling only 11.8 million. On the other hand, hardware sales of the PSP sold 3.18 million, up by 0.60 million from last year.
PS3 hardware, on the other hand, sold 2.43 million units, an increase of 1.12 million from last year. Not quite enough to say it doubled up like its software, but that's still a huge increase.
This is good news for those concerned with the PS3 and PSP's future, considering how Sony's lowered its earnings forecast recently. Sony as a whole suffered a 70% drop in overall profits - a big number no matter how much you slice it. Hopefully the decline of their other divisions will not affect the PS3 and the PSP.

Last I checked, 10.7 x 2 was 21.4
"Less than doubled actually, with 21.1 million sold for the quarter, 10.7 million more from last year."

I don't blame the homebrew community for allowing you to play emulators and have cool apps but the pirating is killing the console. People complain all the time about the system not having alot of games but it's because of the pirating why there aren't alot of games. Devs are going to think twice about making a game because they know that they will never make all the money they can. When I first heard that you could just download games, I thought that's cool, I never have to buy a psp game again. But when I stopped and thought about it I realized that doing that would eventually kill the console. So I stopped and now I buy a game if I want it.
It's too late to change it, but I think people need to think twice before they pirate a game because if it doesn't get any better there may not be a psp2. And that would be sad because I like my psp and can't wait for when the next generation comes out.

The operative word is \"from.\" Which means last year, it sold 21.1 minus 10.7 million, which is 10.4. 10.4 x 2 is 20.8, which is less than 21.1 million.

No, it wasn't. The 1.0 firmware version was able to run unsigned code. Yet, no piracy. Many months later they got other firmware versions to run homebrew yet still no piracy. Then the first game to pirate was Lumines. It still took a little while for other games to become piratable. Dreamcast, Wii and PSP all took the same amount of time.
Pirating was available DAY 1 on the PC and Mac.
Piracy kills NOTHING!
Piracy did not kill the Xbox
Piracy did not kill the 360
Piracy did not kill the PS
Piracy did not kill the PS2
Piracy did not kill the Wii
Piracy did not kill the PSP
Piracy did not kill the GBA
Piracy did not kill the NDS
Piracy did not kill the NDSL
Piracy did not kill the PC
Do I really need to keep going?

PS3 had great homebrew, too! Which could have brought the PS3 Sales high. But then they destory homebrew on newer updates. Now they have the recovery menu, I don't think ps3 sales will be affected

PSone needed a modchip
PS2 needs a modchip
Xbox (1) needed a modchip
Xbox 360 needs a hacked drive or a modchip
GBa needed a flashcard
NDS/NDSL needs a flashcard
Wii needed (so far) a modchip
Now let's look at PSP.
Plugin a battery and a memory stick and there you go. After that, you can do al things and you didn't even spent a penny on additonal hardware.
Maybe I'm thinking too far, but that' at least why I think piracy is so rampant on PSP.
and to ISOhaven:
You think piracy did not influence the PC game sales?
I completely disagree.
Firstly, PCs are multimedia hubs. They are not only designed for games. So they will still sell even if there are no games. DUH!
Secondly, you think piracy had only a little impact on PC games? Then tell me why are the sales for PC games are so bad?
Yes, I said bad. Even when you combine all consoles ever made you still won't even reach half the amount of PCs sold. and Even considering that a lot of them are not being used for games or simply don't have the requirements to run a game, I think it's still pretty pathetic that the sales of PC games are *just* on the same level as console game sales.

Honestly, none of the PSP games really appeal to me. I don't even pirate my games, I bought Me and My Katamari for less than ten dollars at Toys R Us when I first got my PSP, discovered emulators, immediately installed SNES and GameBoy and haven't updated since 3.40 OE. I love my Super Nintendo! That's all I play now that I've beaten Katamari (everyone go buy Katamari it's an amazing game).
Super Mario forever!

The main reason PC game sales are down is becuse of the consols, not piracy. I was a big PC gamer back in the late '80 and most of the '90s, and if piracy had an effect it would have been in the mid to late '90. But it did not.
What is realy killing PC sales is that game makers, and gamers are looking at the fact that on the PC side is that you have to upgrade every two years at most to keep up. With consols you only have to upgrade ever five years at most(I feel that will change to a little bit longer.) It cost less to have a consol then having to upkeep a PC. And you do not have to worry if the game will run on a consol.
Also, you do not have to wait to install the games on consols.(most PS3 games you do.)
That is why PC game sales are down, not piracy, but the fact that consols cost less in the long run, and you can play the game right after you get it. You can also go to a friend, who has the same consol, and bring a game that you have but he does not and play it there.

"You think piracy did not influence the PC game sales?"
Of course it did. Where did you get game sales from?
"Firstly, PCs are multimedia hubs. They are not only designed for games. So they will still sell even if there are no games. DUH!"
Who said anything about PC sales? We're talking about GAMES.
"Secondly, you think piracy had only a little impact on PC games?"
I know that as fact. It only has a LITTLE impact.
"Then tell me why are the sales for PC games are so bad?"
They aren't. Where are you getting your information? My company recently looked into and research EA greatly because we just signed a contract with them. We're making "something" for one of their games. The details are not released to public yet. EA game sales outweigh most consoles and that's JUST EA.
"Yes, I said bad. Even when you combine all consoles ever made you still won't even reach half the amount of PCs sold."
That's a bunch of bull. You're just pulling stuff out your ass now. Plus, not all PC sales are for gaming. In 2007 over 200 million XP licenses sold. Those where NEW MACHINE licenses. So that doesn't even count Linux and whatever else.
To date, there have only been ~ 72.31 million Wiis, 360s and PS3s and those sales include ALL sales from EVERY year. So your math is pure crap.
FACT - PC games have been piratable from day 1 and PC gamming is still around. You've done nothing to refute that FACT.
@Darkthunder90 - Yeah, what about it? It was no more or less easier to pirate then some other consoles and PC. Just because ONE console tanked doesn't mean THAT WAS THE REASON.
You can buy a Wii and all other consoles pre-modded. Then you don't have to do anything harder then copy games the same way the dreamcast did.
