PS3 sales double from last year's Q1, PSP also doing well |

Sony has announced some happy news for its platforms. The PlayStation 3 is doing much better so far this year, and the PSP isn't posting bad numbers at all either.The PS3 racked up 1.56 million sold units in Q1 of 2008 - double than what it was in Q1 2007. At the same period last year, sales for the consoles were only around 700,000.
Sony says 23 million software units were sold in the same period this year for the PS3. No cash totals were given out for both hardware and software so far, but we'll update you if Sony decides to be open with it soon.
Sony's handheld posted an impressive 3.72 million this past quarter, while the aging PlayStation 2 still has plenty of selling power with 1.51 million sold. Stick around for more industry reports.

So *that's* why the Wii is the best selling home console ever, and why they have more, higher rated (metacritic) exclusive titles. And apparently a more diverse library.

And yes the PS3 is never going to beat the Wii or 360 (outside of Japan since the 360 can't get a foothold there). I don't think that's the point though. And doubling sales in a year of something that was a low figure to beat in the first place isn't exactly something to write home about I don't think.

And I'm afraid to say it looks like the PS3 won't be surpassing the 360, c74. I don't know what you class as a "win" though. I can imagine you might say "Having the most reliable console", but that would in turn mean the Gamecube won last gen.
Isn't that what the PS3 is now? This generations Gamecube? Last gen the Xbox and GC were fighting for 2nd, the GC was the most reliable and toughest piece of gaming hardware, had a staunch set of supporters, a slim trickle of good games and had the least number of sales in the end. Sound familiar?
I don't get why you people are so hung up on sales though. If you like the system then there you go - enjoy it! Console sales do matter (entices developers) but to game players who are content with their systems exclusives then it shouldn't matter to the player.
And also don't try to criticise the Xbox for its RRoD when the PS1 and 2 had class action lawsuits filed over their very defective lasers, or remember the PSP's dead pixel problem? Come on now...

The dead pixel problem happens in any monitor ever made. Even the DS has that problem.

Sony is the only company really making an innovative effort on their console right now. Microsoft is just focused on stealing third-party exclusives and Nintendo keeps rehashing the same Mario/Zelda/Mario Party games all over again. Sony is actually taking the time and spending the money to develop completely new games and franchises, and trying to bring the gaming industry to the next level.
You're using a PS3 for the internet instead of playing games? That's rather odd. Well maybe not since there aren't many good PS3 games.
PS3 is this years PS2? Pardon? It seems statistics are against you. Infact from a release to date performance perspective the PS3 and 360 are the worst performing consoles since 2000. In descending order it's Wii, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, 360, PS3.
Why did you bring Live into it? Why would I pay to play games online? You don't seem too smart.
You have to pay to get the 360 comparable to a PS3? How so? I can go out and buy a Pro model for £180. The same price as a Wii from any shop. It will do everything I need it to to just play games (and come with a HD cable). For a PS3 well that's £300 and contains stuff I don't need. So that's a waste of money. I'd rather the pricey components be kept optional so I don't have to sink a ton initially to just play a game (and then wait whilst games "install" yet still require the disc in the drive).
Oh and dead pixels are inevitable. What decent companies do is offer free replacements should you have even ONE dead pixel. This is what Nintendo, Apple and Dell offer. Sony's offer is if the pixels are clumped together and the minimum they will replace a PSP for is 17 dead pixels. My fat had 10 dead pixels so I couldn't have a replacement. My fat DS also had 2 but was replaced no questions asked.
And just as you said - when you buy something it should work. So why did Sony have multiple class action lawsuits against them for faulty PS1 and PS2 lasers? This means many people had this problem, just like the RRoD. Replacing it yourself voided the warranty and there was NO free extended warranty like the 360. You had to pay Sony or a licensed repairer to have it fixed. Dead pixels don't break the system but they're something that detract from the system (and fixed by better companies).
I'm also slightly worried that you keep going on about the HD-DVD drive. So much so that I didn't even bring that topic up, yet you mentioned it again. I'm inclined to believe this is passive aggression caused by you buying a HD-DVD drive yourself. Or you could just be mental.
And finally - Sony are the only ones innovating? I suppose that's why you're all looking forward to FFIIX, Versus, God of War 3, Gran Tourismo whatever and all them GTA's, DMC's, MGS games... What new games has Sony brought out for the PS3. Resistance, Motorstorm, Lair and Heavenly Sword? They're hardly original titles! A bland FPS, another racer, a terrible Rogue Squadron 4 and a God of War clone?

u not wanting the features means jack. Wifi broadband is a standard(almost certain every isp delivers a wifi router). most people dont live in a basement with chunky ethernet cables stranded. most people dont have the convienience of having a router near their TVs.

The PS3's needless features comes from the BluRay drive. As a commercial game developer myself who has worked on titles for most systems I can say that BR isn't exactly a necessary product, and the Cell chip has a steep learning curve for most devs who have worked with other systems in the past. The PC and even 360 manage super epic games that only fit on DVD9, DVD5 in some cases. It's all about optimisation and compression.
Seriously I'm quite surprised at this guessing game you idiots are playing. Really. Is there anyone who can hold a proper discussion and not start waxying lyrical their consoles constantly. I own all 3 main consoles and both the main handhelds. I talk bad about them all.
PS3 is a bit worthless at the moment.
360 does have a habit of breaking, but also has many games of many genres. None I like though.

Finally before na2rul gets his facts wrong again he/she should look up broadband market penetration. As of 2008 dial up connections are still the larger market. IIRC is it 8% of the US has broadband compared to 30% dialup, and in the UK IIRC broadband is in 35% of internet connected homes. Exact figures are out there but broadband is a minority so I'm therefore assuming wifi broadband is an even smaller minority. And don't take what ISP's are doing as the home standard. That is for new customers only.
A wifi access point can be set up from anyone who pays for internet. Therefore wifi should be included in every system. Microsoft want's your money and calling me a troll because micro$oft uses unethical buisness tactics, makes you the troll. How much is micro$oft paying you. It's seems that they'll suck any ***** just to get exclusives and buy out any company they choose, and then make them selves the standard while smaller companies such as apple have to fight harder. I could say....playstaton's the best.....for a console gamer everybody should know final fantasy, tekken, and etc....and only playstation made it the best game...from ff1-ff5 in nintendo the game sucks.. not until 7 came in ps1..and also tekken, i think the best fighting game from playstation...and soul blade from ps1 where soul calibur came from..for now sony focuses on psp...

The Wii is the "best selling home console" because it is cheap and blinds potential buyers with pseudo- innovative Gameplay and brags about its "unique motion sensing" (although it actually doesn't do more than the original EyeToy). People who see a Wii in action, usually get hyped up and go out the next day to get one, and after 1-2 Weeks it justs collects dust (or gets chipped because no one is ready to pay full price for last generation games lol). I know quite a number of people with Wiis, only one of them is playing it on a regular basis. (and this one is chipped)
Oh, and the "great diverse" games your talking about are severly overhyped, I mean Super Mario Galaxy 98% WTF?
The Wii is nothing more than an outdated Game System (was since launch) which tries to make up for that with its "innovative" Game controls and "original" (yeah right) titles. I have so far to see a Wii game which keeps me hooked for longer than the average PSN title.

"stealing 3rd parties"... You guys don't have a clue do you? Here's the situation in a nutshell - PS3 was hyped before launch, devs believe it to be the second coming so announce exclusives. PS3 fails to deliver on sales and requires many firmware updates to match the previous standards (trophies, home etc). Devs go multiplatform. It'll probably surprise you to know that GTAIV was always headed to the Xbox and PC (since... well... every other GTA has been on the Xbox or PC) and that Microsoft only paid for DLC exclusivity after the decision to release both the PS3 and 360 versions at the same time.
Microsoft haven't actually paid any devs but DO have a generous rewarding scheme, plus Live is a great form of prolonged income for devs. It makes absolute business sense. Exclusives are the antithesis to good business sense.
As for Nintendo rehashing titles... Release dates for these "constant" console titles are-
Mario Kart; 1997-2002-2008
Zelda; 1997-1999-2002-2006 (as many as GT or DMC, less than GTA and MGS)
Mario; 1997-2002-2007 (less than pretty much all Sony's IPs)
Each gen only brings 1 (proper) Pokemon game, 1 Mario Kart, 1 Mario platform game, 1 Smash Bros, 2 Zelda titles.....
But how do you argue with logic? See below.
So I was reading all this comments and I really laughed hard at the fan-boy-ism of everyone regarding the PS3 and 360, especially c74gta4smash whose replies seem to give me a headache and lower my IQ everytime I read them.
First of all, we don't know if PS3 is actually gonna lose this generation, they probably will but Sony is still gonna make some revenues, hey last gen all 3 consoles had positive revenues.
Now, I know that 360 RROD is a big flaw (around 33% of 360s) that shows how microsoft is negligent to fix issues before releasing their problems (Vista for example) but Microsoft fixes them for free, and they arrive in 1-2 weeks so its not like its a big problem. Now, Sony has a less defective problem that is the blu-ray drive not reading games, and they fix it for free the first year, but after that they charge you for fix, and what's even worse is that when you get you ps3 fix you get no warranty depending on the problem. Both consoles have a problem...
Now about the wii being bought due to cheap price and blind potential, yeah its true it attracts becuz its cheap (due to lack of online service, sligtly inferior hardware, ect.) but to say that it has no good lineup is false. Brawl was pretty good, and Mario Glalaxy was also a top-notch game (if you've played you would see that in gameplay it competes with COD4, GTA4, Gears of War, and even MGS4).
Also, the hd-dvd drive discussion is kinda worthless since almost no 360 owner bought it (sold less than 2000, and theres over 10million 360s) and whoever bought it was a moron and doesn't deserve to be buy any piece of hardware without the help of someone normal.
Also I should have said earlier, even though Sony got sued over drive problems in their ps1 and ps2 it was really a small problem taken to high degrees.
Also, PS2 started slow? Do you have any knowledge about videogame history? PS2 was probably the fastest selling console at start in history, along with the GBA... The PS2 sold like crazy becuz of the fanbase that the PS1 had installed (one that Sony still relys on, and a reason why they entered this gen overconfident with their unstable PS3).
Also, dead pixel problem really has been around in monitors, various handheld consoles such as the DS and PSP, but the PSP has a high tendency for that to happen, although I dont criticize the PSP cuz other than that and a few other flaws is a great console, and one that has let me played games from the past +)
Also, live service isn't crappy, in fact its better (less lag, network failures, and less features) than PSN. Still PSN is free, its still good for playing games, so both systems succeed in online (I actually decided to buy the PS3 becuz of free online, but if I felt I had the money to pay for better sevice O would have gotten a 360).
PS3 and 360 exclusive titles are on par, lineups too, plz stop debating on this becuz most top titles are multiplatform, and the exlusives titles on all 3 consoles kinda are on par... Most of you only own one of the consoles and care more about games coming for our consoles and overlook tose in other consoles. I only have PS3 but considering I'm a GAMER as in no fan-boy-ism and own over consoles (first was SNES) I play all sorts of games in all consoles in friends house and all and know all consoles are on par.
Ohh and about Blu-ray and how you all make it sound so holy, it's not that great of a feature, blu-ray isn't a big change, I bet most of you with a PS3 like me still rent the movies in DVD becuz its cheaper, and most of you don't buy bluray movies, or let me rephrase that, most of you dont BUY movies, especially when its so easy to pirate movies this days. Yeah, blu-ray will become a necessity since the market will eliminate DVDs like they did to VHS but when that time comes blu-ray players will cost around 100 dollars, and the only reason most people will get it is for renting movies since in 5 years movie piracy is gonna be rampant.

Look guys I hate xbox, and I do have a ps3 just for one game and that's MGS3. Games on ps3 and xbox to me, are not really fun because of the controller. The wii-mote make all FPS or any type game more fun I'm sorry, but it's true. So if there have to be a 2nd console I vote for xbox360. They get the best games 1st and it don't cost as high as the ps3.
So now ps3 fans. I would like to welcome you to the N64 days, or as I like to call it "The Dark Days". lol and I don't think it's going to be any light at the end of your tunnel.
