PS3 Delayed, PSP Revolution Coming Soon! |
Ó
On today's PlayStation Business Briefing 2006, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced an upcoming revolution for the PlayStation Portable. There will be tons of new features to be added to this divine object of glory in the upcoming months. A delay to the PS3 release has also been announced officially. The users will be able to add new exciting functions, such as the Macromedia Flash Player, and will be expanding the current RSS channel function to support streaming and saving internet radio and videos, by updating the System Software of the PSP (the firmware) to the latest version.
New official accessories will also be released this autumn, such as the PSP camera "PSP-300" and the GPS receiver "PSP-290". The users will be able to experience the motion tracing function of the EyeToy, which was originally available on the PS2 by using the PSP camera. With the help of the GPS receiver, you will be able to make use of navigation software to guide your way all over the world.

Sony will be starting a new e-Distribution system for the PSP. You may start to wonder what it is, huh? Well, simply saying - to buy and download games into your memory stick, and run them directly from it!! Bye-bye, loading times... But wait, that is not all the fun you can get from the new service. There will also be an OFFICIAL PlayStation Emulator by Sony itself (PacManFan, don't cry)! Sony will be distributing modified PlayStation/PlayStation 2 games through this system. Also, the "Ceramic White" PSP will be sold in a normal pack (PSP, 1 battery, power adapter) from April in Japan, at a price for 19,800 JPY (167.8 USD). North American and European users will be able to buy a "Base Model" pack (PSP, 1 battery, power adapter) of the PSP at $199USD/199 Euro. The actually dates are: Europe from March 22, North American from the end of March.
So much for the PSP side, now here is a bad news for the PS3 fans. Sony has officially announced that the release of the PS3 is postponed from this spring to early November of 2006. However, the release of the PS3 will be global - Asia, North America and Europe will be getting the release in the mean time. Sony will be able to offer 1 million consoles per month after the release, to meet the need of the users around the world.

And i have faith in the community to hack this firware.

we'll need homebrew revolution to get homebrew on it...
can wait for the camera..!
but then again.. if they're going to come up with PSP2 with built-in camera... i'll get a second PSP.. haha
Reply
I hope soon (UPGRADE!!!)
Reply
Lets just hope they don't make you download the roms from them and charge you for it... hopefully they will release software to simply transfer the games onto the psp
Reply
Reply
Reply
You will be getting the games from them, as they will likely be changed at the code level to work with their emulator/hardware.
Reply
I don't feel like paying the 10e again for the game I bought years ago.... Thou they could have come up with something like "insert the original disc to verifie that you own the game.."

LOL yeah i'll just slide my ps1 game into the psp drive... OH seems i have a problem the friggin ps1 cd is huge and won't fit into the drive!!!

Thats what he said!

But i will jump the train a bit later ^^ as always
Downloading ps1 games via PC to transfer to the PSP sounds logical, even if it cripples your mobility a bit. shure they wil charge for it nevertheses (micro payments for Original owners maybe?). They need to pay their employees too. And for shure you will need to buy the emulator.
And since they will release an auxilary camera will there maybe no PSP2 so soon?
And another and
when you can use the USB port for Cameras, Microphones and GPS devices, why the hack not for Keyboards, Mouses, Surroundspeaker systems a.s.o.?

CELL and GPU Core are DONE.
Controller and BluRay Driver - Not Yet!

Reply
But what i dont get is how will i be able to play a PSX game with no L2 and R2 buttons...
they should come out with a usb that adds two buttons to the top...with the emulator...
i have a bad feeling that this update will be to make everyone want to download it like the 2.6...i might wait and see what the homebrew hacking make of it..

Is this the arrival of portable video chat? The new camera will be tight! This is going to be a big HR for Sony.

and they WILL charge you for the ps1 games(its sony people),, unless it checks to see if you registerd that game already(from their site, with the serial #) and ps1 games take a huge amout of space, unless sony has some super compression method or something,,
im going to have to skip this upgrade unless we get full homebrew surport, cause free games rule
Reply
On the other hand, SONY may finally be listening to people who develop homebrew and giving them the features they desire, not that I would expect it to last but this will be far better than a bunch of 16 bit emulators. Also, flash support would be a decent alternative to homebrew games.
At any rate I will wait and see what happens before updating, maybe updating will be well worth saying goodbye to homebrew but then maybe the features will be so limited that they are not worth it. Only time will tell.
Reply
as for the ps1/ps2 games of course there going to charge it'll be around £5 a game i reckon and NOT all games will be released obviously if there's going to be compatability problems with a certain game or it ends up being to big then there not going to release it are they. they'll just keep making bigger and bigger memory sticks available.

Flash? Done and being improved on 1.5
RSS/Net Radio? The radio is at least done and done well on 1.5, RSS I don't use anyway (though I would play with it if it was done well on 1.5)
PSX emulator? I'm not about to buy the same games I already paid for. And this is being worked on also I believe.
Play off memory card? The memory card isn't that incredibly fast over a UMD from what i've seen. There are still load times.
Download games to memory card? Welcome to Steam PSP.
Camera? Unless it's going to be at least 3.2 megapixel, I see nothing useful. The eyetoy games are gimicks at best. I can't see anything exciting about a psp eyetoy.
The only thing I would cinsider upgrading for at this point is something I feel should have beenincluded from day 1, which is A/V out. IT's USB 2.0, so it should be fast enough to work with some sort of USB adapter/dongle. Then upgrading firmware would finally be worthwhile.

1)Macromedia Flash Player:
Flash is good, but, every time a new security vulnarbility comes out, they'll have to release a new update (ya really think thats going to go well?)
2)Buy and download games into your memory stick, and run them directly:
I highly doubt its going to be UMD games. It's probably going to be like the xbox360 arcade (not bad, just not what a lot of people want)
3)modified PlayStation...:
Does this mean Im going to have to re-buy all the game i already have? hope theyre cheap (and the prople they are targiting with this have CC)
4)...PlayStation 2 games:
WHAT!!!!!! How many PS2 games are going to fit on a two gig stick (or even the four gig stick thats not releaced yet), I bet these games are going to be modified to the point of no return (but the dream of KH and KH2 on the PSP still makes me drool)
but whatever FW this comes in, i may actually update (but ill grab GTA, just to keep some homebrew)

Wow.... That went longer than I thought it would...
To address the concerns of those wondering how they're going to fit games like FFVII into a reasonable size, I say consider this. The resolution of the PSP screen is lower than that of a standard television screen, which means they can probably get away with using smaller texture sizes. FMV sequences can be re-encoded at the lower resolution of the PSP screen into an MP4 video format. These three things alone should save quite a bit of room. Lastly, consider that games spanning multiple discs have a lot of duplicate data. Each disc contains all of the data to run the game engine and, in the case of FFVII, much of the same information for different areas of the game world since you can go back to areas from earlier in the game without having to switch CD's. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they could cram FFVII into less than 1 GB of space. Now, downloading that much data is still going to be a problem for those that buy the game. Compressing the game data into a ZIP, RAR, etc. file would help some, but it'll still be a big file to download.

//killermoose: Flash player is the program that runs pretty much any online game you play in your web browser (because most are in SWF format).
People are concerned that you won't be able to fit games on the memory stick but I would bet that for users with smaller ones the games could be downloaded to the PS3s HD, and streamed?
And it would also be nice if PS2/1 games could just be saved from the game disc on the ps3 HDD too

as far as a modified ps1/ps2 emulator, does this mean the psp's market of remakes and ports will end?
i just hope that they have some sort of deal where if you own the game you can get it converted for a small ($5) charge.I'd assume if that was the case then either it'd be done at stores,or transfered thru the ps3 in some manner.
maybe they can kiss sega's butt and get us a master system/genesis/sega cd/32x/saturn/dreamcast emulator too.
i hope this happens ASAP, i'll update as soon as MGS is out for it.

First of all, how is SONY going to stop people from pirating the downloaded PS1/PS2 games? Unless SONY comes up with some way for the download system to check the PSP's serial number and change the file in order to ensure that it only works on one PSP before download there will be enough easily pirated games to distract people from the commercial PSP games that will be released. If SONY succeeds in creating a system of that nature it will likely be cracked in about a year and cause SONY more headaches. This is counter productive, especially if there are concerns about piracy, so perhaps SONY should just release "bundles" in UMD format with several PS2/PSX games per UMD, it would be easier.
Who is to say that the Eye Toy and GPS will be 1.5 killers? For those who are willing to wait there will be a hack or program that will allow people to use these devices on 1.5 PSPs albeit most likely in a different manner sooner or later, just like there are hacks that allow most games requiring higher firmware versions to work on 1.5 PSPs. MSN Messenger with web cam, anyone? A homebrew programmer managed to succeed in getting his PSP to interface with a GPS system in the past (reference: http://pspupdates.qj.net/2005/11/gpsp-gps-front-end-program-for-psp.html) and other programmers have found different ways to use parts of the PSP's hardware so perhaps a homebrew programmer can create a program that accesses the maps stored on the GPS's UMD software. Failing that, a scanned road map with a system for determining the location and dimensions of the area would work too. This can be either the end or a new beginning depending on how those who have the ability and knowledge to program homebrew handle it. There is the possibility of the PSP Revolution mentioned here being followed by a new Homebrew Revolution.

The following are direct quotes from the above statement by Sony:
"Sony will be starting a new ***e-Distribution system*** for the PSP." "To ***buy and download*** games into your memory stick, and run them ***directly*** from it!!"
"Sony will be distributing ***MODIFIED***P layStation/PlayStation 2 games through this system."
What does this mean for the average user you might ask?
Well what the above statements mean is this. There is going to be a system similar to Itunes that you sign up for this service and download classic games from the PS1 & PS2 However like stated above these are modified versions of the original games. that is how they will run on the PSP. As these game available for download will most likely be recompiled from the original source files to run on a PSP without the need for an emulator. That is why they are "Modified" as well as some of the games will need the controls reconfigured as there are 4 less buttons and one less analog stick on the psp. The reason sony threw out the words playstation emulator was for shear marketing value. For those of you who don't understand the shear power behind marketing. Let me explain it for you. by Sony using the 2 words Playstation and Emulator in a paragraph about new features for the psp they have stirred up a whole slew of people ready to upgrade thinking that they will be able to dust off thier old ps1 games and make the iso's and play them on thier psp's. Thats exactly what they want you to think. they want everybody to upgrade to the newest firmware so they have control over everything that is psp. If you think about it Sony is just genious. Once you upgrade and then find out that you cant just go and make ISO's on your own its too late. Not to mention they can take the thousand or so games already available for the ps1 modify them to run on a psp and sell them for $5-$10 dollars in the style of itunes. This will give the psp and instant library of hundreds of great titles(great titles which it currently is lacking) and nets sony some cash at the same time. It would be utterly stupid of sony to just make a ps1/ps2 emulator (which in my opinion is impossible for either one of the emulators to run decently on a psp) and release it and leave it up to the user to make the iso's on thier own. When there is huge profit potential to be made by modifying the original games so they run on a psp and then sell them for a small amount. Plus if you did upgrade your firmware to take advantage of these new features. yeah you are gaining the use of ps1, and 2 games but you are also losing all of the following:

Buy legal emulated games on psp.
or
Download illegal emulators with roms.
hmmm what to choose?
Guess it depends on your moral views on the subject.
i most likely won't be updating, but those that do...doesn't make them retarded.

and about the 3GB FF game... The PS1 discs don't even hold 3GB, so how could it be?
Reply
they were multi-discs.
Reply
mabye if its four disks long ;)
But anyway, with any king of compression and combining (like viper said) it could be a gig. Its the PS2 game size that makes me wonder. The PS2 disks hold 4.7 GB (or 8.5 for DVD-9), the hell is that going to fit anything other than a 2 - 8 (assuming they lift the 4gig limit)gig stick.
They're going to make a killing off of this. Memstick sales will rise, they'll be able to resell the PSOne games the majority of the money had been spent, the only changes are for the smaller screen and two missing buttons (the orignal PS1 didn't have any analog sticks, so most games didn't require them).
The PS2 games will require a lot more work (since both the analog sticks and the four missing buttons will need to be accounted for) or an assessory that adds the extra buttons (which would make sony even more money).
After a period of time, they could even make a converter to convert the PS1 games you already own into PSP compatable types (and if its only dowload the remakes like Rploesser suggested, a UMD to launch the game).
This is a great plan for Sony (it will also force game devs to do a better job, more competition), just hope it dosen't backfire on them.

Since (on ebay) you can buy 2gb memory sticks for £40 at the minute (roughly the price of a game) i wouldn't worry too much
On to PS2 games... Crazy Taxi for example is actually on a CD not a DVD therefore takes up 512mb maximum. DVD's (at max) take up 4.7gb and im pretty certain alot of ps2 games dont fill up all this space.
Sony are also releasing the 4gb sticks soon which will be pretty sweet (im not sure if the 8gb's will work yet though). This is basically how these games will fit so stop worryin bout it!
I agree with many of the posts here saying that most of this stuff is out already in the form of homebrew, but to be fair the sony stuff will prob be better... you do get what you pay for! Take GPS for example.. the homebrew of this was not practical and i can't imagine the software was particually good either! Since GPS devices can cost about £400 i'd say an add on for the PSP with decent software would be pretty cool!
On a last note... isn't quite abit of homebrew now working on a 2.6 PSP? I don't really know for certain, or care coz I have a 1.5 but you probably aren't going to lose as much homebrew as some people are making out if you did upgrade?

They also said "Modified". Like most people already mentioned, the controls, also they would have to tone some things down like when they release multiplatform games, they have to lower standards from Xbox to PS2.

do you think sony has all the right to modify the game? no dipshet, probably their own games, where only few are good, games like ffvi wont even have chance. do you think square will modify the game so it fits on psp? now way they will going to waste their money doing that...
