PS1 gaming on PSPs through the PS3: pictures! |
Listed in: News, Games Tags: Crash Bandicoot, memory stick, PlayStation Store, PS1, Sony
Like it or not, QJ has a new slogan: "We're in ur intarwebz, grabbing ur newz!" Of course, when your trained brigade of hamsters spot a couple of related webpages that have pics of the same basic idea, you know we won't pass it up.
What you see above is a picture of Sony's PlayStation Store and its first batch of PS1 games for PSP play. As you can see, Tekken 2, arguably the most memorable Tekken in the franchise, is there, along with Gabe Logan and that blasted bandicoot. Applefiend of the E-mpire forums took the shot and also confirmed earlier news of the PS1 games' prices by mentioning that Crash Bandicoot costs US$ 5.99 to pick up.
On the NeoGAF forums, theBishop decided to try his hand at downloading Syphon Filter, the results of which you can see in the screenshots below. Some observations he mentioned were that you were actually downloading both the game and a license file to play it, and the game shows up in the memory stick area where you can find your downloads. You might want to check for specific tweaks with each game, as he noticed that they also implemented a full-fledged manual into the game and video output options for easier viewing on the handheld.
Of course, the whole thing is not without its setbacks. The file sizes are huge,
ranging from 157 MB (Hot Shots) to 535 MB (Tekken 2). As for transferring and installing, theBishop says it best:
As far as the installation processes. The download went pretty quickly, and it will require the PSP to be plugged in prior to the download. Hopefully this restriction will be removed once the PS3 itself can play the games. It is clear the download is stored on the PS3 HDD, but it does not seem to be accessible from the XMB interface.
After the download is complete, there is an installation process to the PSP, which actually takes WAY too long. Clearly its doing more than just copying the file because 383MB over USB2 should be done in a few minutes. It took at least 10.
In any case, if you have both of Sony's gaming platforms, consider yourself lucky to be one of the first handful to try it out. It should be interesting to see how much mail Sony will be getting over the implementation, and whether people will like it or not. Let's just hope the criticisms and praises for their plans are constructive rather than plain old shouting and screaming.

Whats the point?
Because we can.
Whats the point in playing street fighter on a Xbox360?
Whats the point in playing SNES games on a PSP?
Why? Because portability is better then being stuck at home on a couch.
For me its 600 for a console that plays games.
For me its 250 for a PSP that plays games
Both are well worth their price.
Paying 6 bucks for PS1 games to play anywhere I want is well worth it.

I'm considering the fact we can't run ps1 games off of the memory card in the first place is that, not enough flash space..
I'd have to see it myself, but I really think its the ps3 doing all the work and the psp just displaying video / taking in input

We are again sorry that you didn't get to buy a PS3. Try to feel comfortable with the things you already own like the possible NES, SNES, PS2 and Xbox. If you still feel angry and sad, please feel welcome to come back here and cry to these forums again and again how something wonderful has happened to other people and you're left out of it.. =)
Meanwhile, we'll play with our consoles and feel happy! Yeah!! =)

also a psp/ds/gc/xbox emu would be really cool.
and I suppose we can already play snes9x linux version and other emu?
Reply
question, tho, before 3.01 emu: which is better 1.5 + devhooks, or 2.71 se, and why? not sure why one is better than the other.

Its built into the eboot in order to play the game.
This provides the best compatibility for games as all they have to do is take a game and wrap it into a emulator and publish it.
This makes it so that there is no emulator needed to be installed into the small space of the PSP OS.

The PS Store service may well be like iTunes Store, that needs out to have a credit card to buy anything from the store. I can't test this myself, so don't take this as 100% certain facts.

However PSP already has a wireless instore download type thing (like DS does). So I think they might eventually update that to interact more with PS3 stuff later on (in fact I think they've mentioned this a bunch before).

If you knew anything about how computers worked, you'd understand that the old PSone games are compiled for different binaries than what the processor on the PSP uses... What Sony have done is created PlayStation Store, then asked devs for their old PSone source code, RECOMPILED IT for PSP, fixed up some stuff and packed it as a signed EBOOT (protected by the new MagicGate certificates)...
This will never
ever
EVER
be "hacked" to play ISOs, because there's nothing to hack! It just doesn't work like that!
Please stop being so stupid.
Jack.

why did it have to be supported by fw3.0 etc?
i'd like it if someone could get the ps1 game file off their mem stick, or at least do some tests.
like when copying those games onto the stick they took ages, did it take ages when they deleted it off the stick and then put it back on?
can you copy the file off the memstick? can you copy the contents of your root dir to pc, format, recopy over and see if the game works?
- i live in the uk and can't test it regardless -
can you do some tests pleasE?!

Since there is already PSPs spot in certain stores as like download centers I do think that will be getting meshed with the PS3 stuff more and more in the near future as Sony has made mention to before.

And, why did M$ drop support for Xbox? Cause they expect their Fanboys to buy the 360 just like everyone with Windows. Micro$oft may come out with good products, but they have a horrible sales plan.
Maybe if you look at the rest of the PS3 site, you can see stuff about the "Real Games".
Remember, Old school is still cool (Wow, how corny...). Everyone but you loves them still.

SF ROCKS! but we do need to respect others views.
Some like RPGs, some like Fighters like you and I
and others like fps which is another I dig on.
Just because you and I might not like RPGs very
much doesn't mean we can shut down somebody
elses optinion. I do like me some Secret of Mana
though.
Resident Evil and Street Fighter needs to be
next on the list though, along with a few RPGs
to round it out a little.
