Kas Hirai showed off the upcoming PS1 emulator for the PSP at E3 tonight, giving PSP fans everywhere something to look forward to. He downloaded the game to the PSP's Memory Stick, chose the game from the PSP's menu and started playing. The title he demonstrated was the original Ridge Racer for PS1 and according to all accounts the game ran smoothly and looked great on the PSP.

This is good news for all of us who have been waiting to learn more about Sony's PS1 emulator for PSP. Now all we need to know is how much it's going to cost to download games!

Interesting. So they're demonstrating it now? And one already runs smoothly? My only hope is FF7 comes out for download. That does, and I will finally believe there is a god out there. Playing FF7 on the go...just WOW.

A PS1 emulator is much better then any homebrew out there. being able to play FVII on the PSP would be so godly id buy a 2nd psp for it.

» My hopes.

I watched this live and yes it looks amazing, but my real hope is that we get alot of games for no, or atleast a reasonable price. I wish they'd just allow for the conversion of games, and the option to remap controls so you can choose when you need the R2 L2 and such.

» Questions...

Here are some questions I have for $ony..

How much will each game cost?

How big will the games be?

Will you be able to transfer them off the memory card (backup)?

If you can back them up, what would prevent people from "sharing"? The only thing I can think off is the encrypted file will somehow "tie" itself to your MAC address. What else is unique to each psp?

I will be getting Suikoden 1 & 2 if they are not released in english on UMD by then.

» Glad this happend

I'm buying a nes psp tpday from a dude at school, just in the nick of time. To bads it's a 1.50 and I'll have to up grade it since I already have a 1.50. Sike If it was I would never up grade it, but it's already at 2.50 so it will probally stay there untill this ps1 emulator comes out.

» PS1 Nice but...

PS1 emulator sounds nice... but...

-Chances are, there will be a playable homebrew PS1 emulator which will allow you to keep all your current homebrew and you won't pay overinflated prices (and use your legally ripped isos from your old ps1).

-N64 emulator!!!

-SNES emulator!

-No other homebrew of any kind (at least until a new exploit is found) which means no more psp stepmania :(

I'll stick with 1.5, thank you very much :)

PS1 has tons of great games, reguardless of graphics, the games are still fantastic. this is going to be one major psp update feature, in my eyes, and may be a key in getting me to upgrade from 1.5.. or just buy a 2nd psp!

by drew4237 - 2006-05-09 16:21
» yeah

i am not gonna upgrade for a ps1 emu. it might be because i never owned a ps1 or am i really into the whole ff series but anygame that i would really have to play that is ps1 i could just find it for really cheap at a store adn play it on my ps2 and who really needs portable ps1 games anyways

by Illegal Machine - 2006-05-09 16:24
» Now heres the real question...

Does anyone think that this emulator will open the door for homebrew on 2.7+??

I'm hoping that someone figures out how to hack this, and then EVERYONE can upgrade/enjoy all the homebrew... It would be nice to have all the new features/codecs, AND all my emulators too... Now it would be a realllly hard decision if that meant that I had to say goodbye to my iso loader.

Would you trade iso loaders for JUST homebrew?

FF7 was something like 2+ gigs and on 3 discs.

to all the people that say they wanna play the big rpg's it all comes back to how will you possibly fit (esp legend of dragoon which is 4 discs ~2.6gb?) on a memory stick granted all of us who have a 1.5 use atleast a gig but theres no way i'm shelling out another 200+ for a 4gb memory stick. and as people have said theres no way i'm giving up all the homebrew that i have on the 1.5.

This is starting to sound like when sony announced the AVC codec compatibilty or the browser or even the flash player ~sigh~

by douche - 2006-05-09 17:33
» 1 gig will probably do the trick

I doubt memory stick space will be as big of an issue as you think. You have to consider that when those games were made they didn't have the compression technology that we have today.

» $ony, give it a rest and allow homebrew on 2.7

If you had to chose between a limited amount of priced ps1 roms and an entire library of n64, snes, nes, genesis, neo geo, and hombrew games which would you chose? I think we all now what $ony hopes we answer. If you have a 2nd psp go for it if you dont mind paying for games that you already own. My guess is the roms will be worth 10$.

» *sigh*

#30 is right. data compression has really evolved in the past ten years. FF7, for example... the PS1 version was 3 discs. assuming each disc has 600MB on it, that means its at around 1.8GB. Well, a "internet special" version of it is only just under 1GB. and if they take that and break it up into 3 segments just like the original, then you're talking about roughly 333MB per FF7 "disc", which i think sounds perfectly fine.

Although personally i think with the massive amount of crap thats in FF7, UMD would be a much better choice for it.

And I also was wondering the same things as #11... pricing and backup. I'm guessing you'd have to "register" and pay for the games online via wifi, similar to how you activate flash and wma playback. and if the game is on ur memstick, but you havent registered and paid for it, you cant play it. that's the most logical way to do it, but they will probably have a much lamer way of doing it that involves no backup-ability, so you have to delete and re-download if you need the memstick space... just a guess, though. purely speculation.

Not only data compression, but sound and video compression as well....most of FF7 is cutscenes and music which can probably be re-encoded.

nevertheless, i believe there will be a strong fight for downloadable games between nintendo (offering nes, gb[c/a] and sega emulation obviously) and sony (offering ps1 emulation only).

i would NOT be surprised if we see the same system being implemented for the ds soon, just with the same content as for the wii.

anyways, the price will decide whether it will be used or not. 10$ for a old game you already baught? imho too much. but we know sony, and thus this seems to be the right price range for them.

give me an abonnement option for 10 bucks a month

they offer, maybe starting with 10 titles, slowly increasing number......

let me be able to save these games personally,

give me an option to use these games on another PSP too, if my PSP is broken or whatever, should be able to register at least 2 or 3 PSPs at on time....

Then, and only then, I would take my second PSP and upgrade to whatever firmware.....

But.... for sure we will never see this...

of course they will offer each game for 10-20 bucks, playable only on one PSP, and.... lots of hackers will work hard to crack this emu.... and will succeed I guess.....

» PS1 downloads (my opinion)

i think this will be a F***in amazein thing to have, resi evil on the bus, ff7 in the bath, gran turismo in bed etc etc. Also the amount of people saying they dont think the games will fit on there psps i hav a thought. Games made for the ps1/ps2 are intended to fit upon a larger screen (TV) whereas if they are made for psp they only hav 480x272 pixels, which will reduce the file size immensly from the amount of 'waste' pixels tht ca be removed. Also, they are probably thinkin of the pspers out there with only 32mb sticks so there could be a way to fit 1 game on them aswell. All in all, the chances that the file sizes will b the same as the originals is INCREDIBLY low e.g. ff7 = roughly 2gig, on psp mayb 50mb-150mb (just a guess)

» Not only compression technology...

Once again, the memory space concerns.... Sony really needs to address this so I can quit repeating myself.

Yes, as others here have mentioned, compression technology has come a long way since the PS1 days. All of those FMV sequences in the Squaresoft games, for example, could be re-encoded in MPEG-4, which would seriously cut down on the space required. Also, the screen resolution of the PSP is lower than a standard NTSC television, so the textures and such don't need to be as detailed if they want to maintain roughly the same image quality. Making those smaller would also save a lot of space. Leaving them the same size as the original, could conceivably improve image quality on a smaller screen. Finally, for a lot of the multi-disc Squaresoft games, you have to remember that a lot of the information on those discs is redundant. For example, by the time you're on Disc 3 of FFVII, you can go back to a lot of places in the game from earlier in the game without having to put the other discs back in. That's because all of the world map information and the game engine data is repeated on each disc. Yes, if you took each disk at face value, you're around the 2 GB mark for FFVII. Consider how much of the data is redundant and how much the video cut-scenes can be compressed and you can cut down on the file size tremendously. I'd say it should be fairly easy to get FFVII well under 1 GB.

And to the guy talking about getting a game on a 32MB card, keep dreaming. There's no way that's going to happen. Sony themselves have seemingly admitted that's not enough since they put out the 1 GB value pack. The 32MB card is only intended for things like save games and a small handful of other things like pictures or pictures. It's just something to get your feet wet with the system and whets your appetite for more, which makes you go out and buy a bigger stick making more money for Sony.

» four disc games=/=~2.8 gigs

The fact is that most games with multiple discs were that way simply because of cutscenes.

I know for a fact that FF7 was multiple discs simply because of the cutscenes, the same data was burnt onto each disc. Things like reduced resolution, re-encoding cutscenes into MPEG4, making games one file (meaning that they share data already encoded onto previous discs) and compression will make most games more than resonable.

by ScoreKeeper - 2006-05-10 03:22
» heres some news

Well someone said FF7 was 2 Gig on 3 discs.

Well that is sorty of true.

If you make the game a whole, it is only 1 Gig.

If someone had the knowledge, it would not take long to do.

So FF7 is possible on PSP.

Once FFVII makes it's way to PSP, sure, it'll be a big blow to homebrew.

However, people MAY be able to exploit it and/or rip parts of 2.70 firmware to use on 1.5 psps. :)

Additionally, FFVII is one of the greatest games of all times. I think this will help a lot more people get interested in PSP which means more support, more games, and more homebrew development.
