Piracy in China: rampant, and so efficient that it's impressive

Pirated Call of Duty 2 - Xbox 360 - Image 1Frank Yu, former Casual Games Producer for Microsoft in China, recently gave a report on the state of piracy in China following the Hong Kong raid where authorities seized 10,000 mod chips for Nintendo consoles. The last major news of piracy in China was last year; at that time it was for the Xbox 360.

Remember our report about Xbox 360 and Wii piracy in the Philippines? Turns out piracy is popular for both the Xbox 360 and the Wii in China as well.

According to Yu though, there isn't much demand for the PlayStation 3 so there's no modding or any distribution of pirated games in China that he is aware of and he doesn't even mention the PSP, which is a popular victim in many other areas. The Nintendo DS isn't spared however, as the Supercard (R4 card) is being sold in China.

Yu states that the Japanese Wii is a more popular candidate for modding since the US Wii has more protection. Modded Wiis can still download firmware although some of the more recent games, like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption won't work (although Yu believes this won't be true for long).

As for the Xbox 360, piracy is still very much active and rampant in the country. While Xbox 360 consoles in China will still be shut out of Xbox Live when MS detects that the console is modded, Yu has heard of a rumor that talks of a mod chip you can switch on and off. One just has to turn it off to log on to Xbox Live.

Hacking and modding is rampant but also incredible efficient - so much that the "folks at MS are always impressed by the speed and workaround that hackers and modders do to the motherboard." Hacking in China is also popular with foreigners, who aren't strangers with hacking shops at all.

» oh man good stuff

hackers themselves has admitted that aside from the PS3 being hard to crack Blu Ray is the same way...

"there isn't much demand for the PlayStation 3 so there's no modding"

good stuff Mr. Frank Yu, former Casual Games Producer for Microsoft in China.

it has never been a question of "demand" for the PS3 but affordability and that is what piracy is for right? but the technology behind it is not that easy to crack.

» Wrong

Its not that there is no demand for it. The PS3s architecture is built as a tank in the same way it is durable. It has been on the market almost a year now and all the stupid hackers still can't hack it.

At least Sony are making 100% profit on their software and hardware.

by silentmatt - 2007-10-29 11:20
» agreed.

Yeah, as soon as you can put CFW on the PS3 or even just hard mod it.... you are going to hear A LOT more news about the PS3 in general. I know quite a few people holding off on purchasing a PS3 merely because it isn't hacked yet.

by Kingofdaberbz - 2007-10-29 11:43
» yep

i know ppl who only bought the Wii & 360 because their the only 2 next-gen systems that can be hacked.ya n it is good 4 sony no one can hack their console so nobody in China wants it the ps3 is the hardest console 2 hack

by Eclipze_ - 2007-10-29 11:49
» Hackers shouldnt be doing half the stuff..

So they have no room to complain if you cant do it. Thats why I hate when people say that the PS3 sucks (like some PSP fans) just cause its not hackable (yet).

» your an idiot...

you actually paid someone $20 to downgrade your psp, you lost big time...

» Good but Bad

Piracy and modchip good for MS and Nintendo because more people will buy their console because of the very cheap price of pirated games. I think it is one of the reason why X360 and Wii are more popular in Asia than the PS3 and also one of the reason why they sold more console than the PS3 in Asia. But it is also Bad for MS, Nintendo and Game Developers because they will lose millions because of this. It is also unfair for those people who buys original games. I think piracy is also one of the reason why Sony go for BluRay rather than HDDVD.

» piracy

That the PS3 is not being adversely effected right now is pure economics. If there is enough demand for a mod it will happen. The pirates are also business men wether we agree with what they do or not. They will not invest time and money in hacking a system that offers no significant ROI.

China, for the 360 the wii and gameboy here in Shanghai when visiting any electrical markets it is almost exclusively westerners that are buying the pirated games and modded consoles. Westerners have taught many Chinese not to say "good morning Sir, how are you today" but we have taught them the automatic responses to,

Can I play a copy

Do you have copy games

can i still play online?

In my opinion the pirates are often the public (and many of them have money or how else to they travel to China. Not by donkey thats for sure) Piracy is nothing more than a business that supplies demand. Simple! no demand no piracy.

» hacking is for nerds

its not really a worthwhile gain since its only games we re talkin bout

by _F1 - 2007-10-30 00:38
» Wrong?

Microsoft do not want people to buy their console and no games (or pirated games, as the case may be), because games are where the money is made. Microsoft make a loss on each console sold, so they lose money every time someone buys a console but doesn't buy any games.

Also, the PS3 has sold far more Japanese units than the Xbox 360 (I'm not sure what the Japan region covers).

» i love piracy! well stop being a good one here ... dont get me wrong people!

well piracy is bad ...yeah i know but its really hard for me not to have this i mean piracy rulez!, yeah manufacturers of this consoles suffers a lot but who cares, so much for their million dollar earnings... let them suffer without piracy life is so much boring ...

well someday ps3 will get hack so patience is always the key ..no gaming console that is way to be so called unhackable and thats the real thing about it, so just wait and you'll see piracy will always rule bcoz their is an organization inside to it and you cant stop its sickness even they confiscate a lot it will still return and return and return and return ..... and return

by Eclipze_ - 2007-10-30 07:07
» actually

More people buy PS3s than 360s in China, so they do want it but of course I bet some dont buy it for that reason.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-10-30 07:16
» ..

If you want piracy go on a damn PC, thats piracy central.

I don't think the PS3 is gonna get hacked, and even if it does I think there going to fix the problem really quick (cause dumbasses post there videos on youtube and everyone finds out.. including SCE). And even now that nobodys done a thing to the PS3, SCE is still adding secrurity updates on almost every Firmware that comes out. So its getting harder to hack even when no ones hacked it yet.

by Eclipze_ - 2007-10-30 07:20
» I want to

Downgrade my PSP but im not sure how to mess with the battery thing (and im not trying to brick my PSP). It looks pretty cool with all the stuff that you can do. Wish someone could help me out but hell no I wouldnt pay someone for it lol.

by tinjastin - 2007-10-30 17:31
» nah i dont believe it ...

nah i just dont believe you, even people exploit such thing NO ONE CAN STOP HACKING THE PS3 and IT WELL GET HACK SOON! and No One Can STOP PIRACY ALL OVER THE WORLD! even Cops, FBI, CIA or whatever loonies out there cannot mess with piracy !, So enough of being a goodie one here as i have said its not today that ps3 will get hack, time will come, and there will be you'll see , like psp ... THERE IS NO THING THAT IS NOT HACKABLE ...

BTW: about getting piracy in PC? well im doing that for almost 8 years already never been caught why? because in our country its legal ... lol!

by Kingofdaberbz - 2007-10-30 18:15
» uhhh

even if the ps3 does get hacked you'll need a blu-ray burner so there is no reason 2 hack the ps3 so take that lol.

by tinjastin - 2007-10-31 06:01
» accept it or not piracy will still rule

lol if the ps3 gets hacked in any way... blue ray burners that cost 0 will turn to and even bd blank discs will get cheaper than 1$

you see at first dvd discs costs way lot expensive but what happened today to dvds well try visiting china, philippines, russia, thailand , indonesia, vietn am and other pirated countries its get a hell lot of a cheap! as cheap as if youre buying a burger haha!... well i can burn dvd blanks for as low as half a quarter dollar lol ! well to those people who doesnt agree with me then stay on what you believe...! i dont care at all but accept it or not all of this device will get cheap and will get hack!

maybe a year or less than so... ps3 will get hack, blue ray burners will get as cheap as 50 bucks and bd blanks will get less than half a dollar... may you believe it or not .. sorry to admit that.... hehe
