Piracy in China: rampant, and so efficient that it's impressive |

Ó
Frank Yu, former Casual Games Producer for Microsoft in China, recently gave a report on the state of piracy in China following the Hong Kong raid where authorities seized 10,000 mod chips for Nintendo consoles. The last major news of piracy in China was last year; at that time it was for the Xbox 360.Remember our report about Xbox 360 and Wii piracy in the Philippines? Turns out piracy is popular for both the Xbox 360 and the Wii in China as well.
According to Yu though, there isn't much demand for the PlayStation 3 so there's no modding or any distribution of pirated games in China that he is aware of and he doesn't even mention the PSP, which is a popular victim in many other areas. The Nintendo DS isn't spared however, as the Supercard (R4 card) is being sold in China.
Yu states that the Japanese Wii is a more popular candidate for modding since the US Wii has more protection. Modded Wiis can still download firmware although some of the more recent games, like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption won't work (although Yu believes this won't be true for long).
As for the Xbox 360, piracy is still very much active and rampant in the country. While Xbox 360 consoles in China will still be shut out of Xbox Live when MS detects that the console is modded, Yu has heard of a rumor that talks of a mod chip you can switch on and off. One just has to turn it off to log on to Xbox Live.
Hacking and modding is rampant but also incredible efficient - so much that the "folks at MS are always impressed by the speed and workaround that hackers and modders do to the motherboard." Hacking in China is also popular with foreigners, who aren't strangers with hacking shops at all.

"there isn't much demand for the PlayStation 3 so there's no modding"
good stuff Mr. Frank Yu, former Casual Games Producer for Microsoft in China.
it has never been a question of "demand" for the PS3 but affordability and that is what piracy is for right? but the technology behind it is not that easy to crack.

At least Sony are making 100% profit on their software and hardware.

China, for the 360 the wii and gameboy here in Shanghai when visiting any electrical markets it is almost exclusively westerners that are buying the pirated games and modded consoles. Westerners have taught many Chinese not to say "good morning Sir, how are you today" but we have taught them the automatic responses to,
Can I play a copy
Do you have copy games
can i still play online?
In my opinion the pirates are often the public (and many of them have money or how else to they travel to China. Not by donkey thats for sure) Piracy is nothing more than a business that supplies demand. Simple! no demand no piracy.

Also, the PS3 has sold far more Japanese units than the Xbox 360 (I'm not sure what the Japan region covers).

well someday ps3 will get hack so patience is always the key ..no gaming console that is way to be so called unhackable and thats the real thing about it, so just wait and you'll see piracy will always rule bcoz their is an organization inside to it and you cant stop its sickness even they confiscate a lot it will still return and return and return and return ..... and return

I don't think the PS3 is gonna get hacked, and even if it does I think there going to fix the problem really quick (cause dumbasses post there videos on youtube and everyone finds out.. including SCE). And even now that nobodys done a thing to the PS3, SCE is still adding secrurity updates on almost every Firmware that comes out. So its getting harder to hack even when no ones hacked it yet.
