Phil Harrison at DICE 07: PSP is NOT suited for homebrew *UPDATE* |
In a Gamespot coverage of the Phil Harrison interview with Newsweek games correspondent N'Gai Croal over at D.I.C.E 07, our ever-so-paranoid news-hamsters found the passage below. This is supposedly after Croal's set of questions were done, and they let the audience ask questions.11:05: The next question talks about XNA (without directly mentioning it) and how it puts some of the power of making games into the hands of average users. Is Sony considering a response? Phil says that Sony started that with the Net Yaroze on the PS, continued it with Linux on the PS2, and is now continuing it with Linux on the PS3. Sony will continue to support that kind of homebrew and organized development initiatives.
The follow-up asks the obvious question about the PSP's place in all this. Phil claims that the PSP isn't well suited for homebrew. Croal name drops Dark_AleX, the hacker that's been busting open the PSP's firmware lately and opening it up for homebrew. Harrison has a sort of cryptic response about future announcements.
Now, before you folks ready your pitchforks and your vegetables, or maybe even perhaps your flying phalli, give us ample time to thank our news-hamsters. Here magical, mystical, news-hamsters of joy and joy-ness, have a food pellet!
Okay, that aside, let us re-emphasize what Phil has just claimed (that of course, if the Gamespot coverage is accurate): The PSP is NOT suited for homebrew.
Not suited? Not suited?!!!! Sigh. We'll leave the obligatory shouting of expletives, and the generation of image macros up to you guys.
UPDATE: Okay, since some of you folks who have commented requested for some quotes from the N'Gai Croal interview with Phil Harrison, here's a portion of the interview that directly relates to the PSP (as reported by Gamasutra):
Croal: "Late last year, you told MTV News regarding the PSP, 'Our achievement has been to deliver console-quality gaming in the palm of your hand. But that could also be considered a missed opportunity -- that we have yet to really deliver PSP games that speak with their own voice and stand for what the machine can do on its own.' With the PSPÂ’s features, why is it taking developers so long to create unique experiences?"
Harrison: "I donÂ’t mean to belittle developers, but weÂ’ve only managed to recreate PS2 in the palm in your hand. I think we can go deeper, I think we can explore more features of the machine, connectivity, social aspects, media aspects, and integrate it into game design that is unique to that format. ItÂ’s not a missed opportunity so much as a future opportunity."
As for quotes of Harrison actually saying that the PSP is not suitable for homebrew, we don't have his exact words... But, as mentioned above, the Gamespot coverage (which you can get access to by clicking the via link below) reports Harrison to have claimed "that the PSP isn't well suited for homebrew". He said this (as Gamespot reports) in a portion of the interview where questions were handed over to the audience. Got that?
Anyhow, there's still something slightly wrong about saying that "we can explore more features of the machine, connectivity, social aspects, media aspects, and integrate it into game design that is unique to that format" and then later saying that "the PSP isn't well suited for homebrew."

What's with the pitchforks comment. Lemme go grab an M4, couple nades, and some C4. We'll straighten this out. Anyone that has an Abrams tank at there disposal wanna lend a hand?
How is it not suited when we are already doing it successfully. Has he not read gaming news at all? PSP Homebrew is big.
he talks about flying phalli, as in, *****s.
i dont think anyone's going to throw their *****s at phil harrison. save us the retarded commentary please.
P-E-N-I-S
Phil is real close to being the official biggest ***** at Sony. Guy's a total douche. Sony needs to start cleaning house, starting with this guy and the marketing talent responsible for PSP commercials. A PR guy can talk around a subject instead of answering it, but comments like these are pure ignorance.
Dark_Alex and custom firmware and iso and pspradio and pspremote and homebrew games and booster and devhook and daxzloader and gameboy snes sega psp emulators were all a dream?! noooooo!
Suck it phil
he is full of sh*t. come suck my d*ck n i'll show u how i control yr c0ck wif my psp. he is definately an 80 yrs old moron.
ASk dark alex, cheat device, the GBA emu, NetserJ and the PSP remote
lol this Phil guy is a complete nob i agree but do really want him to suck it or kick him into next friday?
Man, u might as well paint a bullseye target on your big fat arse!
"not suited for homebrew..."
*sigh.
Dude, this has got to be the DUMBEST thang Ive eva heard. Or as a matter a fact, EVERYONE has heard.
The ONLY, thing I 'might' agree with is the fact that yes, the PSP wasnt ment to run homebrew. Yet other devices such as palms, PC portables, etc... aren't also ment to run homebrews yet they do. It's called techno evolution. I suggest you catch up with it. Instead of wasting your time with useless junk as we all can clearly see such as this.
PPPPFFFFTTT!!!
I wouldnt be suprised if you yourself have a psp that runs OE/SE/DEV or even "homebrews".
And if you aren't, then in my opinion. That's just sad. You have no idea what your missin' out on that the precious official sony FW's can do that CFW's can't.
*Cheers
Okay, so they brought up the subject to big cheese at Sony. He sort of side-steps the question a bit and the reporter just leaves it at that? What kind of reporting is that? I want to see that jackass from 1up that interviewed David Jaffe a week ago or so drill on Phil for a while. That reporter was a donkey, but at least he wasn't afraid to keep pressing on an issue, which I respect him for.
Some questions I'd like to see asked of Mr. Harrison:
1. Obviously, Sony's aware of the custom firmware and homebrew out there. There's clearly a demand for some of the things that homebrew enables. Where there's demand, there's money to be made. Is Sony planning to release any products/firmware updates that can address that demand in a legitimate way? e.g.: An official way to stream media to your PSP from your PC (not just TV via Location Free), or a utility to further customize the XMB beyond simple wallpapers.
2. Sony clearly has a vision for what they want the PSP to be used for, but for a significant portion of their customers, that vision doesn't quite fit. Many surveys have been sent out, but it seems like no one at Sony is listening. Is Sony ever going to lend an ear to what people are asking for or will they just stick to their guns on what Sony wants instead?
3. The home consoles from Sony are on roughly a 10-year product cycle, with new products introduced every 5 years. This has been announced long before the PS3 every launched, but Sony's been quiet about their PSP. What is the scheduled life-cycle of the PSP? Will it be on the same sort of schedule as the home consoles? Are we 10-20-40% through the projected life of the system?
...the bad news is, thats it's from the 2nd world war, and hasn't been in comission since 1945.
A few tinkers here and there and it should be good as new. What we really need is a minigun...
Guess this proves how little some know about the PSP and the homebrew world... It's bigger, much bigger. The PSP is one of the greatest homebrewapplica tions I've ever bought. Harrison probably got firmware 3.11. Not custom fw... *laugh*
i totally agree with vipre77, comeon sony regular devs are releasing better firmwares than you are???!!?!
Viper77 makes some very good points
Some of the custom firm ware and apps are truly what could boost the psp. It would be both great and wise to allow an app specific dev kit to be released at a use at your own risk option. The best thing they should have done to begin with and should do now is open up the resolution, I watch anime on mine during breaks and since UMDs are dead theres no point in holding out.
But all of you people flipping out over a quote that cant be confirmed need to calm down. Yes clearly all the dev apps and emulators exist and some people cant get enough. But it goes with out saying that all those emulators, games, and eloaders dont make sony any money. They dont want people to homebrew and pirate because they get no money back, meaning developers get nothing, meaning why bother. Go ahead and be a pirate if you want playing illegal games, just dont jump down sonys throat when they want you to do things legally and purchase games like the rest of world does which supports gaming and the economy.
I dont know about you guys but i dont want to cry over my psp as a dead system as i did my NGPC. It just hurts too much, some times i can still hear the clicking of that perfect dpad. I know SNK killed there own handheld, but if people complain theres no games then play pirated games on theres or doom and atari games then its going to happen.
LOl the Homebrew scene I think is why many people bother to even keep their PSPS to begin with. .. If it wasn't for homebrew, I'd have another doorstop in the palm of my hand.
Correction, you's have a doorstop that could play crappy ports of PS2 games.
the hillarious part, is i play homebrew more than regular games. maybe that's the problem. he wants to give a bad name to homebrew because it's probably decreasing game sales. i'd love to get more games, but i have no money, so, ya know...
I believe homebrew encourages sales of PSPs. What causes more harm is when people pirate games (not homebrew). Sony should be more supportive on homebrew, but can still go after pirates. Phil is totally wrong about homebrew, not suitable for PSP. Any kind of homebrew, is suitable for PSP (as long it works). Heck, certain parts of the PSP are only used by homebrew so far (non-existent in retail games).
Spent my two cents on my opinion.
wtf?phil harrison sucks
Well, the ps2 was found capable of launching missiles (including the nuclear type) so Im sure we can get the psp to do the same........
Dark_Alex has pwned $ony software!!!
but it's an endless war.. its been like that for all the systems that have had modifications applied to it.. i agree that making games run illigaly is not good for the life cycle of a console but the hombrew is a part that could help developers or keep it in the spot light that much longer... Homeberw is definetly made for the PSP and its just been too kick ass up until now... i still buy the damn games that are good... but if they keep porting PS2 games whats the point...I think sony is just to proud to admit Dark_Alex is better then them hehehe
