Peter Moore on fight against illegal file-sharers: I'm not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer |
Ó
Peter Moore has spoken out about the ongoing battle of the British developers against illegal file-sharers, and unfortunately for the big five, it's not in their support as well.Speaking to Eurogamer at the Leipzig Games Convention, the British head of EA Sports said,
I'm not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer... Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.
He does, however, agree that there should be a crackdown against piracy, but apparently, this is not his preferred method. While he did say there are other ways of dealing with the issue, he did not give a clear counter-proposal to what Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters are doing, suing 25,000 people across UK for illegal file-sharing.
[Piracy] is absolutely wrong. It is stealing. But at the same time I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money. I'm not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games.
And commenting on the music industry's stand on the matter (which is to also disagree and distance themselves with what the publishers and developers are doing), Moore said that it's something that the gaming biz should have learned from them: you don't win any friends by suing your customers.
But these statements, of course, are his own, and does not in any way reflect the position of the EA as a company. He says he doesn't know how EA will react to these developments, although it is without a doubt that EA does not condone piracy and that they take the issue seriously. "... People deserve to get paid for the content they create, but as far as I'm aware, we have no plans, that I know of, to partner with Atari and Codemasters and chase down consumers."
And so the chasm deepens.

Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters, Yeah they want money cause they are making games that suck, and nobody buys them..
so what other way to try getting money.. Suing Gamerz...
i wouldn't waste my time with Their Games anyways.. haha
So WHY are you still using faulty security measures on our games like Securom? Why are you still punishing most of the gamers who are honest? Why are still using security measures that have NO EFFECT? The only thing they do is annoy people and STOP honest people from playing games. A pirate knows exactly how to bypass Securom and co. It has literally NO EFFECT!
Stop using it! seriously....
A good copy protection doesn't mean it can't be cracked. It means it can't be cracked in the most valuable time, that is the first week(s) after release.
And btw. filesharing "pirates" know a *****.
Quit whining and mind your own business.
Who wants to download 30 to 50GB's anyways? who owns blue ray burners on there computers? that's right nobody yet.
For the first four that is true, but Codemasters makes very good racing games. Still, no one buys them
I have a small foam cutlass I like to wave around while I wait for my files to download.
Arrgh.
My mantra, once again, any lock can be broken. However, the real issue is good copy protection shouldn't prevent legitimate customers from using the media they paid good money for. Securom has a history of being rather finicky about what hardware setups it will work correctly with. Some companies have even gone so far as to officially release cracks originally developed by hackers. There was a QJ article about that very recently, I believe it might have been about Halo.
Bottom line, I agree with Peter Moore, paying consumers shouldn't be punished for piracy. I would certainly take offense if I were sued for downloading a replacement for a scratched game disk because the department in charge of replacing disks wouldn't return my calls. Yes, I spent several months trying to contact Konami's replacements department to get a replacement for an original Castlevania: SotN disk that was ruined by a "friend." I was about to start looking for ISOs when they re-released it.
Not everyone has a PS3 or a Blueray PC drive. Most of the games in question are probably PC titles and I'd bet that Blueray drives are pretty rare in PCs right now.
Shut yer hole ya worthless scalawag. Swab the deck and earn yer keep. It's the treasure ye pillage ta spend on entertainment, not t'other way round.
pirates aren't consumers. generally people buy pc games or they pirate pc games. i don't know anybody who does both. that's not to say that there aren't those people out there, i just think they're rare.
Well, I for one, have a BD burner. So "NOBODY" is false.
