Painkiller coming to the PSP

People Can Fly and DreamCatcher have announced that Painkiller, initially released on the PC some 2 years ago, is coming soon to the PSP and PlayStation 2.

The storyline of Painkiller is that you play as an unfortunate soul who has been killed in a car accident and then (for whatever reason) asked to repel an invasion of the forces of Hell. Painkiller was originally born out of the PAIN engine (a kind of Quake-mod-type engine), and basically let you run around at about a hundred miles an hour and reduce everything in your path in blobs. It was a first-person shooter, and came with the standard equipment, namely a shotgun, rocket launcher etc. but every weapon also had an alternative fire mode, so for instance, the rocket launcher doubles as a chain gun.

I personally think Painkiller has had its day, and the tired old Quake-mod-type engine isn't nearly up to spec for what first-person shooters are these days (mind you the bosses in the original sure were huge!). Nonetheless it might be a bit of fun (or at least a time waster).

No release date has been set as yet.

I hope its not a direct port but a new game in the painkiller universe.
by - 2006-04-18 23:26:26
.

"I personally think Painkiller has had its day, and the tired old Quake engine isn't nearly up to spec for what first-person shooters are these days" Because the other current PSP FPS's look so much better.

WTF

Lool... I think the Graphics of Painkiller kicks ass, so the gameplay does. I just love running through hell and blast everthing that moves and watch the bastards poppin

rofl

rofl who writes these things... painkiller is awsome, hope it comes out as it would be the first decent fps
by - 2006-04-18 23:52:34
OMGZ IT DOESNT HAVE THE L33T GRAFICZ

ehhh grow up man, its all about the gameplay especially on a handheld.
by - 2006-04-19 00:16:30
Doesnt use Quake Engine at all

Ummm...think a little research is needed here before someone posts news items like this!! Painkiller uses the proprietary PAIN Engine...not a quake engine Painkiller has awesome graphics - has the person that posted this even played it?
by - 2006-04-19 00:19:34

Stupid idea. PSP controls dont work for fast paced shooters. DS, yes, stylus system works incredibly well for them, but you cant have a twitch based shooter on a console with an inability to twitch! "I personally think Painkiller has had its day, and the tired old Quake engine isn't nearly up to spec" So... you have no idea what youre talking about then? Never even seen PK in action have you?
by - 2006-04-19 00:34:37
ENGINE

PAINKILER DOES NOT USE QUAKE ENGINE!!
by - 2006-04-19 00:38:30
ENGINE

PAINKILLER USE OWN ENGINE!!! IT'S CALL PAIN ENGINE!!! ech:( on PC it have PIXEL and VERTES SHADER 3.0 support and more ... go to www.nvidia.com and see your self;p and PAINKILLER IS a POLISH GAME !:)
by - 2006-04-19 00:46:59
Painkiller is dead ...

Just look at the 'expansion packs' that came out following! Also, I believe the PAIN engine is unique, but it comes out of a modded Quake engine back in the day (maybe Quake 2?). So I believe this guy is actually right ...
by - 2006-04-19 00:57:31
Painkiller > Q2 > Q1

Haha, who needs Q2 deathmatch if this comes out! Painkiller has kickass multiplayer!
by - 2006-04-19 01:06:28
cool

"Painkiller has had its day, and the tired old Quake-mod-type engine isn't nearly up to spec for what first-person shooters are these days" well the psp isnt up to spec in anyway, if were talking cutting edge non-portable gaming hardware. So this might just be perfect

PSP + FPS = No...

Sorry, I really don't think FPS games work for the PSP, unless someone comes up with a really ingenious control scheme that makes up for the lack of the right analog nub. This seems like a good idea though... I hope it turns out well...
by - 2006-04-19 02:25:32

N64 didnt have a right joystick but Goldeneye kicked ass what makes you think a FPS game on psp is not going to work with out a extra nub just maybe! Well anyway its the way developers do things they dont even try makeing a great FPS on PSP they just do a rush job to get quick cash hope this game aint like that!!
by - 2006-04-19 02:27:19
final

FPS is PC only in my book. Cant beat keyboard and mouse
by - 2006-04-19 02:27:34

Goldeneye was essentially a 2.5D game though. There was basicly no need for freelook.
by - 2006-04-19 03:17:40
another retarded post

This is so dumb. Its like a *****ing forum post more a news item! PLEASE stop posting this inane drivel. and STOP putting PERSONAL OPINIONS into the text. WE DONT GIVE A ***** WHAT YOU THINK. We are all big enough and stupid enough to make our own minds up on a story. And at least get your facts right! painkiller has nothing to do with quake!
by - 2006-04-19 03:39:23
sss

yep PAIN engine DON'T based on eny other engine . is't NEW engine ONLY for PainKiller. With Ps and VS 3.0 support , bumpams, shadow maps..etc :) FPS on PSP ? hmm...YES:) Play Quake 1 (or 2) on PSP :] - KICK ASS:)

RE: #20

The whole point of a blog is to get news accompanied by the perspective of someone with similar interests. If you don't want commentary from a blogger read press releases.. they're nice and dry. Furthermore, all that was said about Quake in relation to Painkiller is that the Pain engine is Quake-like; that's all that was said.
by - 2006-04-19 04:27:55
lol?

You think FPS doesn't work on PSP? I like it, because it is possible and controlls are good: A-Nub: Freelook ^ O X and Square = movement (no turning) R = shoot L = Jump D-Pad = change weapon, use item etc Start = Menu Played Syphon Filter or Coded Arms with these settings? It is really good to play. true a second a-nub would be better, but this thing works as good as you would have 2 a-nubs. I would really enjoy Painkiller on my PSP
by - 2006-04-19 04:52:39
:>

square and circle stref analog movement arrows changing weapons trigers shooting and jumping;P Playd Quake 1 with these settings;)

PSP Sucks For FPS's

Painkiller's engine rocks: it's throws a huge amount of enemies at you at once and has some of the best ragdoll physics out there. The game is like a dark-themed Serious Sam, and the graphics are awesome. The guy who wrote the article a eToyChest is an idiot. Just because there's a PC game that doesn't make you spend $400 on a new videocard, doesn't mean the game is "old" and "out-dated". In fact, Painkiller is one of the PC's biggest sleeper hits! Oh, and the fact that it's coming to PSP is a friggin' joke--it's hard enough to control the molasses-like FPS "Coded Arms", so Painkiller is not only gonna look terrible, but it's also gonna play terrible! Who makes such stupid decisions, anyways?
by - 2006-04-19 10:18:54
BLEH!

devs have to realise that FPSs do NOT work on the PSP :-/
by - 2006-04-19 10:48:56
PSPUpdate's Reviewers Are Noobs In Monkey Costumes

I have to agree with the comments of others here. What the **** is with the Personal Oppinions. The FPS games for the PSP that we have right now are SOOOO much better than what painkiller can offer....*RIGHHHHT*. Who the fu*k writes this "drivel". Keep the oppinions of it being a lousy game to your Fu**ing selse. Why diss the game when you have no fuc*ing clue if it will be any good or not. Painkiller didnt have *THE* Most spectacular graphics on the face of the planet... But it did have some kickass gameplay.
by - 2006-04-19 12:50:10
...

Metroid for the DS wasnt quite easy to play with even if it did had a stylus. I thought the graphics were too pixelated and hard to control as well. No fun for a DS.
by - 2006-04-19 13:40:20
Painkiller is a modern Quake

and since Quake plays great on the PSP, so will Painkiller )if it's done correctly). I'm looking forward to this one.
by - 2006-04-19 14:10:29
I am looking forward to this...

First of all, I must state that FPS games definitely work on the PSP. I played Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Coded Arms in the past and never encountered any problems as far as play control was concerned. Second of all, since I have grown weary of waiting for another FPS game to be ported to the PSP as homebrew (or at least a decent game like Quake being modded to allow easy use of total conversions) I will definitely purchase this game just to keep myself entertained. That is, after playing all of the other PSP games that are currently available (and this year there is an adequate number that I have not yet played). If the game is good, considering that i have not played it I would not be too concerned about purchasing it a second time, and if the gameplay is good enough then it will not be a waste of money.

by - 2006-04-19 16:22:47

All I can say is YES!!!. Painkiller is a straight up great game. While you suckers may not be able to play the left-hand configuration for fps games, I can. Muahaha. This is going to be awesome.
