Pachter: hardware sales will grow, Super Smash Bros. Brawl may spark price cuts |
Ó
According to Wedbush Morgan's analyst Michael Pachter, it's all sunshine and roses for the console hardware sales this year. That would be thanks to the recent success of Bungie Studios' Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 (which moved a lot of Microsoft Xbox 360 units) and the entry of Sony's new 40GB PS3, PSP Slim units into the market. Pachter said that there will be a considerable increase in hardware sales due to the new options available to gamers. He also opined that there will be no more price cuts for the remainder of the year, but there's a chance that the release of Nintendo's much-awaited Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii will spark a hardware price cut. "We do not expect a price cut for the Wii until supply and demand are in balance, but believe that the launch of Super Smash Brothers Brawl on February 10, 2008 presents an opportunity to adjust pricing," said Pachter.
Beefed up with an all-star cast and its fans further worked up by a release date delay, it's no wonder that Super Smash Bros. Brawl (you can check out how epic the game will turn out in this video) alone will manage to make an impact on the gaming market, aside from Halo 3.

I do not care about Super Smash Bros. Brawl . It is bored.
Why is patcher or anybody for that matter concern about wii price cuts!!! ITS CHEAP ENOUGH ALREADY!!
any more price cuts and there's a chance it could out do live long sales of the ps2 in half the time..lol
it's simple really, with the release of the xbox 360 arcade bundle at $279, and a new trimmed ps3 at $400, the wii will have to cut the price to stay competitive, especially with the xbox 360 priced so closely
Seriously, why would Nintendo want to do a price cut when Smash comes out? Doesn't that seem a little strange when this game could possibly create more console demand? Doesn't make much sense to me. But I agree that patcher is a little obsessed with price cuts. I think the Wii is ultimately going to be like the DS (It hasn't seen a price cut in ages), because the demand is constant.
Wii wont beat ps2 in terms of £££$$$ and yens although unit sold in inevitable
if the console is going to in demand then why give it a price cut. i mean what does nintendo wanna do, lose money? Thats why microsoft is making the most money out of all the consoles
Hey you never know it could!
Since Nintendo refuses to make enough Wii consoles for the mysterious lingering demand, a price cut would be the last thing they could possible be planning. HENCE THE REASON THEY REFUSE TO INCREASE PRODUCTION!
Guys, just remember... We aren't the owns who made a company that is worth billions of dollars... Nintendo is. They know what they're doing. With the success and experience that Nintendo has had, I wouldn't doubt that what they are doing is going to give them any trouble. Here's the way I see it... There are tons of people who have been holding out because even $250 is too much, and also because "there aren't any good games". When Brawl comes out, people can't complain about no good games (and if you say that Brawl sucks, then either you haven't played Smash, or you're just an anti-nintendo fanboy). However, there'll still be people saying it's too expensive. Hence the price cut. The only people who won't buy a wii now will be the Sony and Microsoft fanboys, the anti gamers, and the super poor people. Everyone else is pretty much covered.
I would consider a console that sold over 13 million consoles in about 10 months a "strong demand" not a "mysterious lingering demand" myself.
I really do consider it a mystery. Compared to the near equivelant gamecube which launched 5 years earlier for $50 cheaper it had the same types of games and same hardware but was actually technologically up to date at the time. Yet it was only sold out for a month. I would even say the games were better. Is a controller really that special?
The Gamecube launched for $200 in 2001 with UP TO DATE HARDWARE, not a N64 processor. Now the Wii is $250 with nothing new but a controller, and it's cheap enough? Just trying to understand the reasoning behind a Wii purchase, which I can't.
Sure, because it's fun to play! Who cares how "current" the technology is. Contra is still fun to play to this day, but yet it has "NES" graphics. Some people buy consoles because it is entertaining, and some people buy consoles because it's new technology. I just happen to prefer entertainment, and I know that a lot of people do as well.
I still don't understand how this could be a mystery. Like I posted before, the Wii has sold over 13 million consoles in 10 months. The Gamecube sold a grand total of about 21 million consoles in it's entire life cycle! Just based on these numbers alone it is obvious why the Gamecube was hardly sold out while the Wii is. Again this has nothing to do with the Wiimote, games, or even computational power of the system. It is simple supply and demand. Demand is A and Supply is B and A > B, so that means the item is going to be sold out.
