Pachter calls MMO gamers "addicts" |
Ó
Ohhhhh boy... Talk about flame bait. Reuters recently quizzed various stakeholders and analysts on their take on the recession benefiting the MMO scene. With jobs being lost, a lot of folks have more time on their hands now, and that points to more play time for MMO players.
When asked about the matter, here's what Michael Pachter said:
I don't think (online multiplayer games) get impacted at all, because people who play them are addicts... Losing their jobs makes them more likely to play because they have more time to play.
He's been making news a lot lately for his market predictions, but this is a little different from his usual brand of statements. Let's see if he'll explain himself further in the coming days.

i've been calling MMO players addicts for a very long time... atleast since i heard a specific sony property referred to as "evercrack".
just like everything else, some take it way too far, some maintain a proper balance, and the majority struggle to keep it (cars, money, what have you) in check...

Ok. Yes. MMO gamers are addicts. So are most gamers. But MMO gamers are obsessive to the point of mental instability sometimes. It's why I don't play MMO's. (other than the fact that I just don't find them fun at all)

That could be because I only ever play F2P MMO's so there is no reason for me to want to make the most out of a game due to the fact I paid for it.
I'm actually against P2P MMO's. I refuse to pay any amount of money per month for an MMO...no matter how good the game....
But I do agree that most of the MMO gamers that play P2P MMO's are a little overboard when it comes to their playing... World of Warcraft is the perfect example here....and yet..I've never even seen the fun in that game personally...

Similarly, ps3 is free, but that doesn't mean its any better (referring to the f2p vs p2p) as far as addiction. Trophies on both systems don't help though. It encourages addictive and Obsessive compulsive behaviors.
After having played EQ1 for 7 years, EQ2 for 1 year and various other games for 2-3 years, I can honestly say that 99% of mmo players don't see them selves as addicts, they see them selves as doing what is necessary and sufficient to be successful in their game.
From the outside looking in, I definitely can see how I seemed addicted when I played. 12 hour sessions, playing till 3 am, spending all my free time on weekends and even adjusting my work schedule so I could make specific events.
In retrospec, it was a ton cheaper to pay 15 bucks a month for one enjoyable game to spend my free time on as a college student then it would have been to do any other activity. At the same time, I dont miss it at all now and I really appreciate all the "free" time I have.
