If you remember some weeks back, we mentioned some super-ultra-hyper-mega secret launch title would be talked about in the November issue of "Official Playstation Magazine." A 1Up podcast mentioned that it might just be The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, since it fits the five-word hint of OPM, but then again, Cooking Mama Fatal Battle Deluxe would also fit the bill, so you never know what the truth will be. Somehow, we also mentioned that it wouldn't be Oblivion, so some of you may be just as confused as we are.
Live in confusion no more folks, because the truth has come to light. Like it or not, the secret launch title was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion all along.
It won't be the same game you've gotten to know, though, as they will be adding new content to this version. While they haven't outlined all the new goodies for people to try out, they did mention that one of the intriguing new additions would be a new faction: The Knights of the Nine. What this means is that there will finally be a good faction to work for, giving all those who've always tried to be good an incentive to keep playing: the chance to become a Divine Crusader.
For the PSP:
On a related note, Bethesda is also coming out with a PSP version of the game, called Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion. We have yet to receive further word on that one.

now PS3 linueup games are better than XBOX 360, even if they are releasing a few games this coming launch day.
Remember that this game did come out almost a year ago for Xbox 360... However, it will be much better for the PS3 simply because it will (as all games will) support the 1080P resolution. And to add, Matt, shut up about how this is PS3 news. They obviously added that a PSP game was coming out soon under the Elder Scrolls franchise just so people like you wouldn't whine that this was PS3 news on a PSP site.
I have the X-Box 360 version and am quite content with it, but i think remaking it in 1080p is not a bad idea at all. It was glorious to begin with, and some more resolution can only add to that.
As for the PSP edition, Im skeptical, but hopeful. Im kinda taking it in the "Metal Gear" sense. Like, I hope its not a spin off like the Ac!d's were (tho a goood spin-off...just not as good as the original...I have a copy of the original.) but an actual portable rendition of the game, such as Portable Ops will be (praise the gods for PO's).

All games will not support 1080p RandomMan. It's up to the developers whether 1080p is supported or not on the PS3, hence the majority of PS3 games are 720p for good reasons.
Anyway, this is good news, I look forward to seeing the improvements to the game thanks to the extra time.
Dissapointment i thought there will be graphical updates. This looks worse than xbox 360. i juts hope they upscale it to 1080p

actually, the game *didn't* come out almost a year ago, as it didn't come out until after i started working at Obsidian Entertainment, which was in April. so, at the earliest, it came out in May or something. that's 5 months ago. by the time it releases on the PS3, it'll be 7 months. still not close to the almost a year mark.
anyway, i have it on my PC, and like most of the killer titles for the 360 that interest me, i'll get the PC version (Bioshock, Call of Duty 2, F.E.A.R, Condemned, Half Life 2, all on my PC).
games like Untold Legends, Virtua Fighter 5, Heavenly Sword, Resistence, Warhawk, and White Knight Story are enough to warrant a PS3 purchase. the 360 doesn't have anything for me (not interested in Gears of War, i don't like Halo, and anything else that i find interesting and intriguing is coming out on the PC, or the PS3 also, ie, Assassin's Creed).
i really want a 360, but there hasn't been any reasons for me to *get* one, especially now that the $500 PS3 supports HDMI.

You guys do know that Microsoft is releasing a patch with the usual Xbox-Live update, so games in the future, and some already released games will now be 1080p compatible, PS3 has been met yet again (also not all PS3 games are 1080p as standard, most are 780p). The pic above looks exactly the same as the original elder scrolls on the 360, i see no difference, and i dont think that the PS3 version warrants a purchase(WOW! a new faction...). Both games will be IDENTICAL, except for the new "Revolutionary" faction (A gimmick). I'm glad to see that it's made it's way to PS3, and i dont see why this was such a huge kept secret...

Half a year ago, MS said 1080p is not possible at all, and laughed about the PS3. The well trained crowd joined in the laughter, of course. Then Sony spoiled the fun with announcing and showing more and more 1080p games.
2 months ago, MS said 1080p is not important at all, since nobody owns a 1080p display and 720p is the way to go. The well trained crows joined in and shook heads about Sony's stupid plans. Then the crowd realized, that 1080p-displays won't keep the same price tag forever and might eventually become relevant.
A month ago, MS said the X360 will support 1080p output (for the time being just upscaled 720p, but other studios are allowed to create native 1080p-rendering). The well trained crowd suddenly praises 1080p brought to them by the power of X360 (many failing to realize it will just be upscaled at least for a while).
If MS ever announced HD-DVD games (which will not happen, but just imagining it), i bet even that would be very welcomed and praised by the same crowd...

Now I must say that I do own this game on the 360 (dont get me wrong... I do want a ps3) but the photos look very.... bland... I dont know why but maybe its just the picture and not the game but I guess you cannot judge a game's graphics by photos...

ok #5 u do kno that oblivion will be ported, meaning the same textures from the xbox and pc versions, it will be scaled to 1080p wich is not the same. the game wont look any different as far as the 360's its the conent that will make it a difference on the ps3.
Check out the textures, they are HIGH RES all over the screen and in the background. They are much worse on X360 and PC.

This game isnt for everyone. This is a game where your time spent in the gam is what you're rewarded.
Many people simnply pick up the game, play for a while, get confused on the lvling system, get confused on many things and put it on the shelf or sell it.
So you think Xbox360 will get 1080p native games? I dont think so. For instance DVD9 just doesnt have the space.

The graphics in the game are decent. But the environment is MASSIVE. I could believe how big the place really is until i drove around.
Whats the file size? 7.34 GB on my PC.
That means its roughly the same on the Xbox360 because the downloadable image is around 6GB, decompress and it will be roughly 7GB.
Does the game look anything close to the games that will be comming out for the Xbox360 and PS3? NOT EVEN CLOSE.
At 1920x1080 with graphics set to High for everything the game looks identical when i set the resolution to 1280x720. What does this mean? The game was designed to run in 720p. Any higher resolutions will just show the game upscaled, and therefore LITTLE improvement to graphics, just the models will be less jaggy.
Thats 720p game at 7GB.
What would the game be if it was designed for 1080p?
Considering that 1080p is over 2x the pixel count of 720p, the minimum for Just Cause in 1080p would be roughly 12-14GB.
Oblivion obviously doesnt look much better on the Xbox360 then the PC cause the game was designed for the Xbox360. Its very obvious when setting the resolution above 720p cause at 1080p, its upscaled and its very obvious because the textures and models have no improvement when set at 1080p.
Microsoft and fanboys alike can play that the DVD9 will never be broken. By the end of next year DVD9 will be what developers are talking about, not because of its greatness and microsofts "choice", but because it will limit the ability of developers to make games for the system.
By that time they will want to make games on HD-DVD. Microsoft wont let that happen, or either make some stupid way of making it happen that makes them seem like the good guys.
Oblivion has subpar Models, but the textures make up for it.
Just cause has subpar graphics, but the environment makes up for it.
See the limitation of space. PC based games look amazing. All console fans can argue all they want but when it comes down to it, the PC is unbeatable in graphics, and gameplay. There are little to no restrictions since people have large Hard Drives. I for one have a total of 780GB. But I can also argue that PC Ports look ugly. There hasnt been a port to the Xbox360 that even looks half as good as the PC version. Why? Because when running anything from a DVD drive, its going to be 1/4 as good as running from a hard drive.

Oblivion is cool and all, but it is kind of old hat. I mean back when it was announced like a year or more ago, was the last time it looked "next-gen." The jerky animations and the extremely boring circumlocuitous dialogue really detract from the experience. Come on Jak and Daxter had procedural animation blending and that was released in 2001. But the horribly slow dialogue is what put me off, if Bethesda actually played through it they would have said, "Holy crap! people don't actually talk like that, they are acting retarded. We need to make it more concise."
So, this is the super secret title for the PS3 that can't be guessed. That is pathetic. We knew about it way back (or the possibility of one from rumors). I see this is the best Sony can do in generating hype. Well, they suck at it.
Great game, go buy it PS3 fanboys so that Bethesda can give us ES: V as soon as possible

The big question is whether Bethesda will upgrade the textures and models used on the PS3 version. If we believe all the "insider's PS3 talk" that was posted on some blog and linked to from qj some time ago, then the answer to that question would be "yes". I guess we'll have to wait another week and a half to get some confirmation.
LOl, a Year old game. That looks worse on the Ps3. Way!!! to go Sony. Sony has gotten their hats handed to them so far this gen. RE5 360 exclusive, Lost guitar hero as exclusive, Lost Assassins Creed as exclusive, in-fact all the talk and pics are now 360 hype, All Ps3 games shown looked downgraded from e3, 360 fall update to support 1080p, (Not that more then 2% of TV owners have better than 1080i) but still another lost exclusive. 360 sold 5 million consoles as of june 06, 1.3 million alone in europe, Forcasting 10 million by x-mas, while Ps3 won't even have 2 million worldwide to sell. I could just go on and on and on and on and on.

Only $200m, it makes the 360 almost like a PS3 except it now officially costs more and offers less. Don't mention that it'll burn your house down if you leave that thing on to long. You don't have Wi-fi. How can you have an HDDVD w/o HDMI?! The crazy thing about the HDDVD attachment is that it's an attachment. Attachments look bad.
1080p:
It's not real 1080 b/c most HDTV's don't ofer 1080p support with cables. 95% of HDTV's on the market offer 1080p signals through HDMI only. "Your sound is not even digital. The 360 is finished.
Free Repairs:
Don't get excited over free repairs!!! It means your system is a piece of crap. I had no idea they were charging people to fix that thing in the first place!
What I don't get with M$ is that they are making huge deals about stuff that noone cares about. The GTA4 thing, who cares it sounds like extra sceens or something stupid. Splinter Cell vs. MGS4 who do you think will win.

about this game on PS3 but I understand why SONY is getting it. This game is a very cool RPG and japanese have not enjoyed it yet cause x360 is a failure in Japan. Pushing a PS3 port will make SONY's RPG library pretty strong and attractive for japanese gamers.
On PSP side, if Bethesda makes Oblivion a good PSP game, this will be a hit, a system seller.
My only hope is that Bethesda makes good use of PS3 capabilities (BR, HD, CELL) producing a game for the PS3 and not a mediocre port.
#43 is mad. TGS showed how impressive PS3 games are. Some lost exclusivities will not make any difference because SONY has around 100 titles in production waiting to be uncovered.

Of course it will have 1080p native games, DVD9 will not prevent that from being possible. Oblivion on the PC requires 4.7GB of HD space. If the 360 version is larger on DVD9, that's either because a) the developers have used the space available by using less compression, or b) dummy files have been added to 'push' data to the faster outer regions of the DVD (just like many PS2 and XBox games last gen).

Sigh, you STILL don't get it. You say PC based games look amazing, and yet how many of those 'amazing' PC games you're thinking of require more than the space on DVD9? Name them please. PC games are still distributed on DVD9, and whilst data can be decompressed on the HDD, in most cases, the total game size is still less than 8GB.
So it's not storage space which is the main limitation, it is RAM! That's why the PC is often way ahead of consoles, not just because of the power available, but because of the huge amount of RAM possible, both on the graphics cards and the main system. The XBox 360 and PS3 have only 512MB of RAM, and atleast half of that is for graphics! At any given moment in a game 9i.e. in every screenshot you see), ALL of the graphics you see on screen was processed from the data sitting in memory at the time. The more memory you have, the more graphical detail you can have. In otherwords, if either the 360 or PS3 had 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB, then they would have been capable of producing better graphics.
I'm not saying storage limitation will not have an effect of course, it will if developers choose to use lower res textures to save space. But there are other options too, such as to use less textures overall by relying on more repeated textures, or spanning the game over multiple discs. Not as good as having more space, like that offered by Blu-ray, but these are still a few of many solutions which will work.
So it's nonsense to say native 1080p will not be possible on the 360 because of DVD9, and it's also nonsense to assume that 512MB of RAM on the console will have no influence on the graphics. Certain PC ports to 360 AND PS3 will be effected by the RAM available, even if the consoles have more than enough power to cope with the game.

Can you really dispute the price list that Nada put together? When you think about it, the actual cost of 360 specs matching the PS3 is about 900+.

With the next wave of good xbox 360 games it seems that xbox 360 owners are happy with there systems. While PS3 owners will have to wait to get some really good PS3 games.
Its the games that make a system what it is not the technology/features. Each next gen system appeals to certain poeple. If you love fps and online play xbox 360 is for you. If you love the old snes games like mario donkey and zelda and want a new way to play games then the Wii is for you. Only thing I really knew about the PS3 is that it cost a ton so not sure who it appeals too.
I gave up on consoles cuz it seems there just making them into a computer. I rather just buy a nice gaming pc(which I did) for a little more then a PS3 with superior technology/features/games then any console will ever have plus the computer has the BIGGEST library of games out of any system. And with the Download to drive websites can buy games and download them straight to your HD so no reserving games or waiting in long lines for Madden or whatever.

There is nolonger an HDMI-less PS3. Sony recently announced that BOTH models will have HDMI.
Also, component isn't going to be phased out by HDMI anytime soon.

You got to purchase the HDMI cable for Sony's machine. Wheres that cost? The wireless adapter is not needed, nor is the fan. So really the xbox is quite a lot less expesive. Infact subtracting all your Added and left out shyte I come to: $681.00, But I'll round that to 720.00 with tax and what not.

Based on the performance specs listed by both Sony and Nintendo, the PSP should be murdering the DS left and right in every market.
We all know this is NOT the case. The DS is comming out on top in neary every market and every quarter, with few exceptions.

the 360 could easily come out on top due to the price tag alon when PS3 finally lauches, it has certainlly been a huge factor in the DS/PSP battle.

FYI - Sony has sold over 200 million PS2's during its lifetime. The 360 has sold about 6 million units after an entire year. With there being at least 200 million gamers how can any of you guys confidently say that the 360 will win this thing?

I'm not made of money and won't be being any 1080i/p gear anytime soon, so i would find it a unexcusable waste of money to spend hundreds of $$ just to upscale textures on a 1080 screen which I don't even own.

In the end PS3 is getting Oblivion, with high res textures all over the place (it's painful to watch N64 textures in X360 version), anisotropic filtering (textures are sharp all over the place), better framerate, and over 10h of new story, not to mention all the additional equipment and sidequests.
So yeah, PS3 gets the superior version.
As for 1080p on X360, M$ already said in IGN interview, that X360 just can't run 1080p games, it doesn't have enough internal bandwidth, and *****, I knew that year ago.

here's something to think about concerning Oblivion on the PSP:
the price of memory sticks is going down exponentially.
by next April, who knows how cheap 4 gig memory sticks will be.
my point is: how do we know Oblivion on the PSP will be on a 1.5 gig UMD?
the cost of producing 4 gig memory sticks could be extremely cheap in April, and the game could ship on a memory stick instead, and still for around $40 (though i'd guess $49.99 because of the content).
GTA: LCS did wonders on the 1.5 gig UMD, and i'm sure VCS will do more (it *is* bigger than LCS), but they can't compare with Oblivion.
of course, it's been said that the PSP version is totally different than the PS3/PC/360 version, and apparently takes place in a different setting. it'll be interesting to read that OPM in a few weeks, that's for sure.

Hmmm, I don't think so. Xbox was future-proof compared to Ps2 (Online broadband, HDD, Progressive Scan) but I think Microsoft sorta dropped the ball this time, all the new fangled features that PS3 has is in the form of attachments on the 360, and nobody likes having to buy another little box so they can use some functionality that was included on another system out of the box.
Case in point- Ps2 HDD and Ps2 Online Adapter.

Wow, this is good news. I only hope that they improve it so it doesnt chop and lag every so often when running through the environment. I agree with you. The main reason i brought the first xbox was the modchip. When the machine are moded it's way better ,we can't use all the potential.
By the way I'm not a fanboy, i just really... really... REALLY... hate the X360 after i buy it. I was so happy to be the first one to have one and then i realise that most games lag (except XLA games i hope), the machine overheat, the machine make lot of noise, you can't put mp3, you can't put your own video, the backward compatibility suck, there's no AAA games, i put it in vertical and the dvd door jam, you have to pay to play online, there's an external brick power supply, the DVD player options suck, it can't play dvix .avi, it have a high-def titanic movie trailer and doesn't tell you how to play other HD video.... what XBL only...lame and finally the Media center setup crap. WOW i was shock!

I think we all need to take into account how HYPED this game was. This game was seriously hyped. And now, what, it's only been about 7 months since it's release, and it's dead history by now. Bankrupt? im sorry, but isnt this the company that made a rather big profit this year, even though development costs for the PS3 would have been sky high?! im sure half of you d**kheads dont think. Sony just don't do consoles, they do PC's, Laptops, Mobile Phones, TV's (with some of the best HDTV's on the market), Hi-Fis and god knows what else.
Sony's PS3 will sell no matter what. Why? Simple, its a Playstation. The Playstation name is huge, far bigger than Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's former consoles (N64, Gamecube etc). People ignore that Sony does have a gigantic customer base. PS1 sold millions and PS2 is (i think) the biggest selling home console of all time. They already have over 1million pre-orders on the PS3, there launching with far more consoles and launch games than microsoft did with 360, so to say it will completely fail is just utter rubbish.
As for this game, so what if its about 7-8months after 360 version. who cares?? i remember when a certain GTA San Andreas launched on xbox several months after the PS2 version (if not, a full year after at least), yet nobody complained about that. True, but it's not so much fans but fanboys (I always make sure I seperate the two :)). XBox fanboys will try their best to 'dumb it down' in the same way PS fanboys try their best to dumb down any good news about the 360 (1080p being the most recent example).

My two cents. I remembered right before the the PS2 was released and how there were SO many Dreamcast zealots. They talked about how the PS2 had these "mythical" capabilities that were unnecessary and a waste of effort. The worst I've ever seen was a Gamefan magazine, where they talked about how the DC would demolish the PS2 because they had a headstart on the then-next generation market. After two or so years, Sega was saying goodbye to the console market, while the PS2 is still selling decently after its 7th year. With superior technology to its dead competitor.
Yes, it's not all about the hardware, it's the games. But just a few things in mind. What crippled the N64 was the use of media, which was the old school cartridge. What prevented the DC from being competitive was their lack of thinking forward...56k anyone? Does anyone remember the PS2 HDD, Network Adaptor, or how the PS2 had to be remodeled? What about the first clunky XBox Controller (revisions don't count)? Developers can only go so far with what they're given in order to make their games enjoyable.
Sony came into the business as a winner with the PS1 and they did more than what could be possible with it. Well given that I remember that time clearly, I'll give my two cents too.
Sega's problems started LONG before the PS2. It started with the mistakes of the Mega 32x (3D add-on), the terrible Mega CD and then the complicated Saturn. The Dreamcast was developed as a result of the death of the Saturn. It was a final throw of the dice from a company who made huge mistakes in the market, and the DC was not enough to reverse their fortunes.
Yes the PS2 was the final nail in the coffin, but it was Sega who made the coffin and dug the hole to put it in.
But talking of zealots, what about all those for the PS2? You know, the one's who swallowed the hype of Toy Story graphics (whoever the source may be), 66 million polygons per second (therefore PS2 was 25x more powerful than the DC they yelled), the Emotion Engine adding incredible realism and dynamic behaviour to game characters, "jacking into the matrix" for online etc.
For about a year, PS2 fanboys were telling everyone about how the PS2 will blow the DC away because of the unbelieveable specs. But after the PS2's launch, with graphics which fell FAR short of the hype (including the infamous 'jaggies'), and games which did not blow the DC away, it was clear that the PS2 was not the huge leap forward many were expecting. In fact, DC was demonstrating games which looked better than the PS2 for the first year. So after a year of being put down by PS2 fanboys before launch, DC fanboys now laughed at the PS2 and it's fanboys. But of course, we know who had the last laugh. ;)

Well, not a lack of thinking forward, it was an excellent console which suffered from Sega's earlier mistakes. Also, 56K was the right choice for the console at the time (launched in Japan in 11/1998 remember). If the DC had a 5 year life span, then it's successor would arrive at the end of 2003 at the earliest, just a year after the PS2's Network Adapter! The NA had an ethernet port, but it also had a 56K modem, which Sony insisted was important for gamers at the time.

I think the majority expect Sony to eventually be market leaders again this gen, but I don't expect they will have the same dominance they had with the Playstation and the PS2. Nintendo today are not the Nintendo of the past, and Microsoft are certainly not Sega. :)
