Does this means it'll make game development more somewhat faster on UMDs?
How does the release of such software affects us (the consumers) in any way exactly?
(Thanks in advance!)

I suppose it's main use is to compile the game/movie/audio project properly onto a psp, with instant feedback on the unit before publishing it.
Makes you wonder though, what have developers been using before? Perhaps they already had this, but now it's been made public for anyone to use.
It's one thing to spend $17k on this, but I wonder what the cost is to actually publish this thing. All in all, quite interesting.
And to SUPER ULTRA DUDE, this is pc software (using a dell pc by the looks of it), so having 2.7 is irrelavent. Testing it uses a different psp, but I would assume the actual disks these projects go onto are 2.7-ish.

Disconect the umd drive, do a little welding so that you can share a dvd burnerdrive with the psp and a comp
burn your game to the dvd and launch the DVDR as a umd.
Would take about an hour to rig and cost almost nothing.
I actualy did it for a while, then i got sick of having all my games on the stick and reconeced the umd tray

Well i hope it is leaked to create our own pmf :) or our own umd movies in iso format to be played with devhok :)

I can think of three meanings to this:
1) Verifys the bits and bytes to make sure the image is not corrupt
2) PSP emulator on pc to test the image
3) UMD emulator on PSP to play image files (iso-loader to some of you)
I personally think the first idea is very basic and not much use (the image should be made perfectly in the first place, there should be no need to verify it 1/0!)
So im interested to see if its 2, or 3! Thats a bit dangers throwing either of those around, they will certainly get leaked eventually and the impact on SONY would be huge?
So can someone explain to me what the "Image Checker" is (specifically) or iterate why SONY would do that?

2. This system does not encrypt/sign the games. That's why you still have to send them to Sony, apart from being able to record them.

That is just a psp devkit. They run for about 3k-4k for a licensed developer. It in no way burns disc. It just has a duel drive to it (so you can either run a umd or DVD) (only sony can press UMD so developers have to use the DVD drive to get a simulation of what it would be like via UMD untill they get a test batch pressed by sony).

And at 200,000yen, that equals, about $1,700US, not 17,000.
Aside from that, big deal about this. You have to send the creation to sony to publish, so there isn't much use for it.

I ask Sony for UMD Burner long time back - they tell me to go away. I ask for Dev kit...they say it only for serious developer. I serious developer - just not seriously rich with money.
I go back to drink beer.

All this is for is making UMD _MOVIES_. It has nothing to do with creating games. This software will encode your movie source into the proper PSP format, encode your audio and then add subtitles and chapter stops if you desire.
You then create your menu structure (which is basically just XML programming) and a few other tools that format all the files necessary for a UMD movie.
It will then format a disc for replication (BTW, that's NOT a UMD burner, it's just a UMD drive mounted on a little emulator/computer).
Now, you _CAN_ extract an ISO image from the replication disc it creates (I have done this, it's not really that hard, but it's not just a simple 'Copy the file to your computer'. It created a disc with about 6 or 7 files on it, you need 2 of them.) I've converted Star Wars to the proper UMD Movie spec (using Kill Bill menus... :) ), and it works perfectly (and looks damn good...).
Also note, this isn't really new... It's been available for months (my Beta copy expired in Feb I think). In the Beta, I wasn't able to make it create a PMF file though (the options where there, I just couldn't get a source video file that the program liked...) I assume either I was doing it wrong, or it wasn't fully functional.
Neat program to play with, but not really useful unless you want to make your own PSP movies.

The little computer with the PSP attached (it's an emulator) is about $5000.

But, the emulator has dropped to about $1500... That's a steal! :)
