welcome Home! - Image 1After all the buzz spurred by Sony's introduction of their ambitious PS3 Home environment from the GDC, we now have a launch date for it. Yes, folks. Sony has revealed that they intend to launch it this October, with an initial free download coming in at "under 500MB".

Here's what's gonna happen 'til then. There will be a closed beta phase between April and August for around 15, 000 users, while an open beta will be in operations for 50, 000 or so people between August and the launch date itself. Exciting, eh? While there still have yet to be details out regarding this beta opportunities, you better keep it posted here for more news on that.

As for the features, Sony has also said that there are some which will most likely be accessible via the PSP as well as mobile phones. Also, there will be special paid-for events for you guys coming your way. More on the features:

Currently Home is not a persistent world, so when you leave Home, all of your possessions go with you. For instance, it is not currently possible for other users to visit your apartment while you are not there... We are working on the persistent aspect of Home, and expect to implement it in the long term.

Great, we're not so sure if we would want guests dropping by our apartments when we're not there, anyway. But, we'll see. It sure seems as if there's still more surprises to come from Home. We'll keep you posted, don't worry.

I have mixed feelings about this, but more excited than disappointed. But by the time this releases I'll prolly have a PS3. What's more excited than this is LittleBigPlanet .

» Great!

Playstation Home looks amazing. Can't wait for it to be released! LittleBigPlanet also seems cool. Honestly, it looks like a Pixar movie, the graphics are unbelievable. I can see it getting a bit boring tho.

Playstation Home rocks!

I can't wait for Home. If they can do half of what they say, it will be amazing. The potential is off the charts for this thing!

» well....

I'm not sure if I really want anybody at my apartment while i'm not there. If they do, I say you should be able to give a virtual "key" to the person you trust the most and have him "house sit" Beats leaving your pet rotweiler in there!!!

I hope they keep it so only people who are invited can come in. That just makes way more sense. I can't wait for Home it looks awesome and just so you guys know expect and xbox fanboy who calls himself qwe or something like that to post that nothing is free and that you'll have to pay to do just about anything. He's been saying that crap in every single Home article, obviously he's so jealous all he can do is try to convince people Home is bad or too expensive or whatever. Stupid fanboys.

uhh have you guys watched the GDC keynote? Voice chat is supported and there are private spaces like your apartment and hall of fame that only people you invite are allowed into.

» Work In Progress

Right now, they say, you can't launch games straight from home, that is some major issue IMHO. Also, the central hubs or what they're called can only have 64 people in them at any time. While I agree that that's a lot, I wonder if you can "switch" easily to meet people, or how you can meet with, say, 3 friends in one specific hub if you're all "assigned" to different ones by default. Would be nice to get some feedback on that, I'm sure they'll work something out.

Alas, the "Home is not a persistent world, so when you leave Home, all of your possessions go with you." issue... guys, with statements like "we are not sure we want people in there when we're offline" you're sounding like fanatic fanboys. The issue to adress here is two-fold:

1) The world should be persistent, Sony thinks so and they say they need to fix it.

2) There should (and probably will) be a mechanism to let you choose who can enter your personal home.

"Ooh, it's missing, well actually that's good, and I'm just talking out of my arse without even really knowing how getting somebody into my place is going to work in the first place"... *rolleyes*

If you don't want people to see your private pics, I guess you shouldn't hang them on your virtual walls, let's be practical. If you don't want them to see your virtual trophies for games without your presence... well, why wouldn't you? It's not as if they can STEAL them. And I'm sure SONY's going to put in access restrictions that every individual can configure, just as in XBL you can choose who can see whether you're online, what games you play, etc etc etc... but in the meantime, calling something that Sony themselves consider as something that needs to be fixed a good thing is just foolish.
