Oblivion wins over Gears

CliffyB and the gangYou can decry the Spike TV Video Game Awards show as much as you want, but you can't deny the fact that the Awards is very much supported and some people do think that the award Spike TV gives out has some weight to it.

So who are the big winners this year? Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion managed to nab five awards, so they're pretty much this year's "top dog", much to the dismay of a lot in the crowd.

You see, throughout the night Gears of War and Oblivion was neck and neck until the last award. With each game having four awards each, the only remaining award for the night was the Game of the Year.

The games that got the biggest applause when nominees for the award were announced were Guitar Hero 2 and Gears of War. But as we've said, Oblivion won, and they went home happy. The audience were stunned to say the least. Oh well.

What else happened? Comedienne Sarah Silverman said that gamers "should get an award for their work in AIDS prevention," Tenacious D rocked the house, and the Wii got an award for best breakthrough tech. Oh, and the Critics Choice Award, the only award open for games released after November 7, went to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon best fighting game?

Wii a technological breakthrough? Recycled hardware with an also old (overlooked but old) human interface? How can this be called a technological breakthrough?

"New" Super Mario the best handheld game? Even the DS had better games already this year?

Iam impressed that the Okami game was up fighting with Gears Of War in 'Best Graphics' category, we are talking about an old console with 4Mb graphic Memory. Thats cool.

» oblivion

I'm sorry but oblivion is 100 times better than all of the FF's put into one. Don't get me wrong when i want a good jrpg i play FF's also but oblivion has so much more to offer then just some prefabbed script of go here and deliver a note to the guy down the street and come back and i'll give you a magical carrot that will make your hair blue so you can look even more like a jrpg character.... I'm so tired of tending to the needs of the japanese. Just let them have sony and microsoft quit worrying about what they think. USA is way bigger and sells a ton more gams.

I love the final fantasy series, and my favorite (nostalgia) is and always will be 7, no matter how much I dig 12, it just can not replace it.

But Oblivion, despite its quirks, is a freaking awesome game. Now, some people just do not like it, but the fact remains there are a ton who do. Otherwise it would not still be selling like it is.

The game simply offers too much to even think GoW had a chance. And while there IS an end, that end is far off .... I have to say I haven't even touched the main quest yet, but this is due to a corrupted save file and having to start over again, while newer games came out and started sucking up my Oblivion time.

Like GoW, for instance. I played the ***** out of that game, and despite some levels on hardcore and the entire insane run, I have that game BEAT. And while its a ton of fun on Live!, something like that gets old. Except for those who worship, like they do with HALO 2, and are on everyday religiously.

Bottom line, in the end, Oblivion has much more to offer - especially in story. GoW has an awesome plot, but there really is not much story there. a few morsels that ask questions, and do not answer ***** - but of course this was done on purpose to pave way for a sequel - I just think they WAY over did it and should splurge on the story in the next one.

Well, thats my 2 cents.

» oddity in the winners

» hmm

Why didn't they broadcast this on comedy central... because this award show is a joke!

by dammit - 2006-12-10 04:59
» I can't disagree...

Maybe New Super Mario Bros as best handheld game is a bit MUCH to say for that title...I hear Ninboys talk a lot about how it's "not an EVOLUTION series," when the game's shortcomings and deleted features, as compared with previous SMB's, are mentioned. Damn, maybe they don't produce them as if they're an evo series, but, maybe they SHOULD. I still enjoy Super Mario World more than NSMB. I'm sure there had to be a better game out there for a handheld, this year, than NSMB.

Gears of War vs. Oblivion, I could've seen going either way. I think maybe GoW had more mainstream appeal, meaning, it's more of a draw to those who find swords and sorcery and lots of STORY boring....Y'know, the Summer explosion blockbuster movie fans who love GTA-style and FPS games because of all the violence and lack of necessary thought. Oblivion's definitely got it knocked in terms of longevity, which is more of a concern to the hardcore gamer than the casual vidgame folks who only buy Madden XX and whatever other games everyone's talking about...

Wii kinda' seems like a repackaging of those VR motion sensitive gloves and what-not that we used to hear SO MUCH about, back in the early '90's, but never really saw materialize, not to mention an improvement on all those old dedicated, tv-interfaced games from Tiger or whomever, where you'd swing a golf club controller or baseball bat controller at the television (or the NES' powerglove and U-Force, looking further back)--I think maybe the leaps and bounds it rests above what we've seen before are enough to justify it as a "technical achievement," whereas the PS3 doesn't really bring anything newER, relatively, to the mix than the last 10 generations of "NEW" processors that have been developed.

I think my main complaint would be that the award show was transcribed and summarized with such dodgy grammar and syntax, here. I LOVE THIS SITE, and I know it seems kinda' silly to be a grammarian on a videogame site, but, for ch_rist's sake, why don't they run stuff through a spelling/grammar check, now and then?

» It's all advertising -- the truth of the VGA awards

The games that win are the ones that had the most advertising and sales while they were released. They ignore the authentically great games that didn't need all the hype to do well. They also do a horrendous job giving Japanese and foreign originating games a fair shake.

EXAMPLE: In previous years, the VGA awarded best acting to the chick who played "Invisible Woman" in Fantastic 4. Her sound bites were taken from the movie and they gave her best acting. King Kong won best action and a bunch of other stuff because of the movie's hype and they had Jack Black as a guest star. In a previous year (the first annual VGA if I'm not mistaken), they awarded a Madden game as best game of the year because of how well it sold. Meanwhile, Metal Gear Solid 3 and other gems from japan went ignored.

Of course New Super Mario won best handheld. Even though there were plenty that were better (on both DS and PSP), they outsold the competition tremendously. They'd be spitting in too many fanboys' faces by not giving that game the award.

CONCLUSION: To make a tired point that everybody already knows, the VGA is produced and run by fanboys who care more than anything about "Good Graphics" (a common phrase back in the 8-bit days that doesn't really mean anything) for an audience of fanboys who want to be validated that they were right to spend their money on the latest flashy "good graphics" first person perspective game. At least some of their skits are funny, but why do we need musical performances by crappy teen bands and commentaries from celebrity actors that have nothing to do with the gaming industry???

» MK wins best fighting game?!?!?! That ain't right!

With all my fanboyism aside, how the f*** did Mortal Kombat win best fighting game. This is just wrong i tell you. The game was fun back in the SNES days but now it's just the same old clunky, tired game and the gameplay's not even that deep to justify playing competitively. Do you see Mortal Kombat in any arcades?? no, didn't think so.

If anything, Street Fighter or Tekken should have won. They're still solid games with deep gameplay and can still be played competitively unlike MK. Hell, even DOA 4 and and God Hand (even though I would not consider this a fighting game) were much better games. I'd say the only reason MK won was because either the judges were high and don't have clue on real fighting games or because MK was made in America.

» quite a mature post...your are not a nerd

i,m greatly pleased.....what you say..is highly true...the issue here is never quality....the event is nothin more than an advertizing for certain games....they would never put true masterpeice games like shadow of the collusus win in such an event..

» Some funny picks...

I think that the only reason why Best Fighting game would go to Mortal Kombat (just speculating here...) over Tekken is because Spike couldn't get a Namco rep to show up to the awards (Namco obviously being based in Japan) and Midway obviously is based here in the USA and could get a rep to come to the awards show. Something to think about... Anyways, I wouldn't take these shows too seriously. They are just nothing but a 2 hour advertising campaign.

last i checked, these were all games, and only the few that i could name off the top of my head. and games playable on the PSP. maybe if you got your head out of your ass, you wouldn't latch on to every other fanboy's ignorant view of the PSP. much like the PS3, the PSP has a lot of other functionality (to add value to the high price, though $200 isn't bad for what you're getting), but it is still a gaming device, albiet for the mature gamer that doesn't just game 24/7. i love the fact that once i'm done playing MGS: Portable Ops or Loco Roco, i can check my email or myspace (albiet slowly. but hey, the option is still there), or fire up a movie off a memory stick or UMD. or even listen to music, or peruse my Penny Arcade strips i have stored on my memory stick. the PSP is a good handheld. period. but what it does better than anything else, is offer the adult gamer a choice. not everyone creams their pants over the exploits of Mario, Link and Samus. some of us like games with a more mature bent (ie, GTA and Metal Gear Solid). and if Nintendo isn't offering us those titles (when was the last time you saw a Metal Gear or GTA on a Nintendo handheld, that wasn't heavily edited in terms of content?), why shouldn't we have an alternative? the PSP has the games. it has the graphics, it has the extra features that us big boys and girls like, so what is with the attitude against this device?

i don't own a DS, but that doesn't mean i hate it. in fact, i think it's a great handheld, albiet i have a hard time playing it because i'm a lefty, and it's awkward trying to adjust.

bottom line, James, stop being a douche and take off those "kneejerk reaction i'm a sheep" glasses and open your eyes.

» Why do people even watch this setup err show?

I mean seriously. If you watch SpikeTV much you can see very blatantly that the winners of the awards are those who pay for the most ad space. They are the most dishonest and disingenous award show on tv. Blockbuster used to do awards and those were based more on reality if I remember right, but Spike is a slap in the face of awards.

GoW should have won the award imo, simply because I could play it through. Oblivion ceased to function for me. It will probably be my last Bethesda game, as Morrowind basically ceased to function about 3/4s of the way through as well. Oh well.

When the main fighting game the mainstream gamers played was mk. Im a tekken fanboy, but DR did really nothing new. It was the same old tekken, just on handheld.

And hands down gears should have one, it is one of the only games this year that i have played start to finished twice. Oblivion, yawn, got old to me after about 20 hours becasue of the difficulty scaling.Oblivion wasnt hard, the scailing ruined it.

I agree with all of the awards though, becasue its about the masses, and what they wanted. Final Fantasy and other Japanese style RPG are really just for a select group of gamers.

Actually, Gears of War won over Oblivion for best graphics...

I happen to be a Sony fanboy as you put it, and I completely agree that Oblivion should have won most of those awards. Thing is, is when you support just one console you are becoming closed minded like the KKK or Morons. I personally plan on buying a PS3 and a Wii. Already have the 360, DS, and PSP. The console is not what matters, what matters is the GAMES!

Yeah, I have played all the Final Fantasy games. From 1 to X-2. (Still haven't gotten 12, and won't touch 11). Anways, Oblivion (or the Elder Scrolls series for that matter) offer FAR more content than Final Fantasy games, and the plot is better than a number of them.

I also agree that this is mostly just advertising, but if that was completely true Gears of War, Farcry, and all the super popular games would have won. Truth is, most gamers HATE RPGs. If they had their way there would be no games besides sports and FPS.

I commend you on having any passion for gaming anymore, as mine died when I played Final Fantasy X. That day is the day I died inside.

Well I haven't played Oblivion on the x360 but if it's just a port of the PC version then I agree, Oblivion does suck. The graphics aren't all that great (dont care) and the gameplay is rubbish, all the cool stuff from Morrowind is gone, you can't even make your own spells in Oblivion. Checkout the total conversion mods for the PC version, they make it worth playing +)

"no technical acheivemnt for FXII..??"

Maybe that's because there was none? Bad graphics with pretty FMVs !+ Technical Achievement, the PS2 is outdated and it's good that the PS3 is out although overpriced so I won't be getting one. FXII is a good game with a solid story + gameplay but there are no technical achievements going on.

I don't think it's the quality of the graphics in Okami that made it a contender but the unique style. The PS2 has 4MB of gfx card ram but it can also allocate parts of the systems 32MB of ram for video processing if required.

Figboy those games are on the PSP not the PS3, maybe you should read more carefully before jumping to comment.

FF7 pwns Oblivion but I suppose thats as inaccurate as you saying Oblivion pwns "all of the FF's", they are completely different games. In Oblivion you do whatever you want, go to whatever dungeon you feel like doing and although there is a main storyline it's pretty weak and can be overlooked (Much like GTA), FF games on the other hand are completely focused on the story and it's understandable that you would say that it's "100 times better" if you don't like reading. You should stop trying to make comparisons between two very different games.

» tekken?

ure calling a rehash of tekken 5 innovative? good god. however it should have won over the rest by default. DOA4 was 2005 virtua fighter isn't out yet, street fighter 2 is good but really old and a shoddy remake and MK the same reasons as SF2.

ive played most the FF games before and i think Oblivion is better in my book because it offers more freedom in the game, which is why i also liked morrowind back in the day, and the thing i think made MK win over Tekken was the create a fighter thing, even though it wasnt all that fancy, and with Gears of War, i think it should be carried over to next year rather this year, since it is a fairly new game.
