Obama to US voters: Stop playing Game Boy

Barack Obama, pic from Associated PressWhile we can understand his sentiment, Senator Barack Obama's choice of rhetoric was a bit stale. Game Politics notes an Associated Press report that mentions his use of gaming as an equivalent to slacking.

According to the Associated Press, Obama was heard saying this at a a recent promotional rally in Austin, Texas:

Obama told the Austin crowd that they should try to recruit their friends to support his campaign. "I want you to tell them, 'It's time for you to turn off the TV and stop playing Game Boy,'" Obama said. "We've got work to do."

It obviously wasn't meant as a literal term, as the senator's been somewhat vocal in getting newer voters to go out and rock the vote (for him, presumably). He previously criticized youth culture as "watching TV, playing video games, and avoiding tough classes in school." Whether or not he wins the elections, we just want to tell him one thing though: "The new handhelds are the DS Lite and PSP. Take your pick for your next performance."

If someone is going to insult us by claiming video games are destroying the foundation of today's society and all that other nonsense people keep throwing out, the least they could do is drum up a little research. Then again, if they actually did that, they'd just be proving themselves to be as retarded as we all know them to be already.

Wow, do you guys even read the article? I'm also wondering what the average IQ of a qj poster is....

He was talking to adults, adults think videogames are "a waste of time"...and really, they are. They are just entertainment and nothing more, it's not like gaming is a way of life. You can't create anything while playing a game, and your life pretty much comes to a halt.

That said, he won't ban gameboys...and maybe some of the more fanatic gamers should heed his words, in fact, maybe some of the posters on his thread should. Maybe if you guys took your eyes off your gameboy(or psp), you'd see how stupid you look, lol.

*FOR FUN SOME QUOTES FROM YOUR POST.*

*He was talking to adults - Was he!

*adults think videogames are "a waste of time" - Do they!

*You can't create anything while playing a game - Can't I!

* Maybe if you guys took your eyes off your gameboy(or psp) - Sir Sir thats psychically impossible. Video games don't have eyes.

*you'd see how stupid you look, lol. - hahaha you'd see it, you'd see it.

» My Choice...

I'm looking at all the candidates. I wouldn't vote for Hillary even though it would be funny to see Bill as the FIRST first man. She has done some overspending and been making some more conservative choices recently as well as making few notable accomplishments in my eyes over her career. My hopes are aligned with Obama for pres with Clinton for vice to be the top pick for the Democrats. It seems like a near sure win. The real issue is that they are both just Senators with little knowledge to get things done. I think that the two of them together like that would be a hell of a combination though. P.S. Hillary hasn't even filed FEC with the Democratic party yet as I know.

John McCain though, is a hell of a candidate to run against. It is a good thing that the republicans have recently lost favor from Bush for the Democratic Party. He is called a "maverick" by the media because he goes against his own party if he wishes. That makes him special in more ways then one and could be a good thing or bad thing. We can't have any arguments over trivial things when stuff needs to get done and that is why we have a two party system when you get to the roots.

Every other candidate is just a runoff catcher for the people that want to be able to say they voted and things would have been better if their candidate had won to me. Edwards, Dean, Sharpton, Giuliani, all of them. Vote for one of them if your too upset to leave your psp or ds for a second to do some research.

Everyone knows something about poltics, its quite ignorant to draw conclusions based on a few stupid comments here. The news is everywhere from the newspaper, the tv, to your mobile phone. There's homeless people who knows whats going on politically.

You think because some people are goofing on this that they don't know whats going on. Its like saying that because Tom Green had once sucked a cows utter on national tv being goofy that he can't possibly know anything about politics or whats going on around the world either from hearing it from word of mouth or TV.

Most people here are no political experts but most of us are going to know a thing or 2 from it being absolutely everywhere. Its inevitable unless you are some hayseed who lives under a rock.

Point is, he is right, we gain absolutely nothing from watching TV and playing video games, aside from some quicker reflexes and better problem solving skills, and you can learn something from TV if you watch Discovery or TLC. It's still very little.

We do need our play time, but maybe not as much as some of us use. There are always better things to do.

Yeah I know what you mean. My mom used to call every system I used to own an Atari. When nintendo came out she'll call it gameboy. When Playstation came out, everything is called a Playstation. No makes me laugh harder then my parents.

Although I am a little sick when I ever hear politicians use games in their topics, I'm not sure whether he is using them to get on people's good side and show that he cares or its so that he can "play with their emotions".

If they really want us to care about them, then they need to stop telling us whats good for us and what we should be doing, because we have a brain and can think for ourselves. A politician's job is to serve our interests, and they need to stop waisting our time and tax money.

No wonder people's involvement with politics has been declining in the past years. People probably didn't want to keep on seeing politicians involved in their every day life and don't want others to tell them what to do and what they shouldn't do. We need someone protects our freedoms and our right to live ever day the way we want to.

I think the 'Gameboy' statement speaks volumes about what a phoney (like most of the Republicrats) Obama is. Here's another ultra-rich aristocrat trying to appear connected to the general populace by throwing-in popular culture catch-words that someone fed him because he hasn't a clue to how real people live. Think about it: if it were you running a campaign, would you insult people en mass who have taken up with what has become an accepted passtime for BOTH adults and children? I think I'd be saying instead, "Come out in the streets and help my campaign, and bring your PSP's and DS's along!" Having done campaign support years back for an independent candidate, there is definitely down time where having had something like the PSP while waiting or drumming up signatures at the fairgrounds might have been nice to have around. For Obama's speech writers, this is just an easy appeal to the old farts in the crowd to do the usual generational divide and get the elders on his side. Note: I'm saying this as an adult not too many years younger than this clown. His charade of sincerity is nothing new.

@what are the odds, nice comeback. Emulators, lol

@hartleshc, he was joking. it's illegal to ban something harmless. Even if something harmless is banned, and enough people like it, it will be legalized again. Think prohibition.

@kohaku, you said first post yourself!!! And, also, even though he didn't say first post, he did say, "lol w00t 1st jump". But, unfortunately, that won't catch on, since there's no public proof that he did in fact do the first jump. Also, 1st posters aren't jackasses. They do it to make people like you flame them. lol. Besides, I think you're just jealous that you can't post first. Don't worry, just keep hitting refresh, and you'll make it one day.

@everyone, when he says gameboy, he's just using the "general term". Gameboys became so popular that n00bs refer to any handheld now as a gameboy. For example, people at work make xeroxs on our HP printer/scanner.... People use kleenexs to wipe their noses when the boxes obviously say "cottenelle". People at wendy's sometimes order a double meat whopper. you get the idea, when something is famous, it becomes the name for the whole industry. Get it? No?! Well, think of it this way, if the atari lynx, or the sega game gear had reached the popularity of the gameboy, our psps would've been referred to as lynxes or gamegears by adults. Just like back when pokemon was cool: when digimon came out, we started playing digimon cards at school. There was a no "pokemon cards" rule at school, so we assume digimon was ok. of course, the noobish teachers confiscated our cards anyway (and probably gave them to their children). lol.

and finally @myself: you are such a geek.

» Hillary will ban "violent" games.

Political *****. Banning so called "violent" games. It's just 3-D animation for goodness sake.

Barack obama is going to be the PREZZZZident so get used to it omfg!!!!1111

Oh wait, this was the most retarded article QJ could have posted. I think everyone knows what he meant. Hey, at least he finally took a stance on something.... :)

» You can tell he has no idea of what he's talking about

And I quote, "Obama told the Austin crowd that they should try to recruit their friends to support his campaign. "I want you to tell them, 'It's time for you to turn off the TV and stop playing Game Boy,'" Obama said. "We've got work to do.". He doesn't even know what a Game Boy is. A Game Boy is a portable system created by Nintendo that contains a built-in screen, thus a television is not needed in order to play it.

On the other hand he could be referring to playing pokemon on an N64 Pokemon Stadium game, or playing an extremely complicated mod of the gameboy that allows the user to connect their gameboy to a tv. But then again, he could also be refering to playing game boy through a pc on t your television.

Or if Obama was smart enough, he could also be referring to the Multitasking capabilities that this Generation has proven to be capable of doing. I play my psp while watching tv, listening to music, and doing my homework all at the same time!!!..:D I wouldn't penalize Obama for being ignorant, but at least he's not as dumb as the Department of Defense!!!!.....

» LMAO

HAHAHA. This is dumb. The whole lot of it. Oh no, he said to stop playing your handheld!!!! :-)) I see a lot of complaints about the handheld, but not the watching TV part. He probably secretly sits in the bathroom watching LocationFree on his PSP! --Oh no, what would everyone think?! I better cover this up quick! hmm, but how?--

» what an accomplishment!

This is the first jump I've seen that hasn't turned into a war between 360 and PS3 fanboys!
