Keith Wright (image taken from GamePolitics.com)New legislation proposed in New York State by Rep. Keith Wright is set to block sales of games that depict racist and religious violence to minors. The bill A00547, if passed should block games that depict advocate or glamorize: commission of a violent crime, suicide, sexual violence, violent racism, religious violence, and illegal use of drug and alcohol.

GamePolitics reports that Rep. Wright's bill also calls for Retailers to place such games in an adults only section. Retailers would be required to check ID for buyers who appear to be under 30. The bill has been referred to the Assembly's Committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection.

GamePolitics further notes that while proposed legislation would affect games sold at retail, it won't affect games that are spread through online, non-commercial distribution.

While we agree with this bill's good intentions, and we note that this is one of the better bills that has attempted to define violence in video games, we have to point out that racism in games is a bit hard to define. Take for example a cliche group of eager heroic knights slaying a bunch of orcs, and calling them "filthy cur" or something. Standard fare for any teen-rated game, or movie for the matter, but it could be considered by some overzealous folks to be "violent racism." And don't get us started on all those WWII shooters.

Moreover, courts have previously disallowed restrictions based on violence alone. This bill might encounter a lot of difficulty getting passed.

» Uhhhh

If a bill like this is ever passed it would be a huge blow against the first amendment.

» They need to give up

they need to give up with this violence to minors, save our youth bullcrap. We in the USA are protected by freedom of speach, blah blah blah and so on and so forth, there fore, they cant do anything.

I agree violence is really strong in some games, but give it a rest, it will never go through. They should mock all these people and just create a game called "Gore(not the vp)" it'll be the most violent, gore, and whatnot game ever.

Here's an idea...let's VOTE on stuff like this. Not elect one represenatative who thinks it's a good idea? Why don't people who actually play games and scientists that do studies get to decide these things? Since when did it become acceptable for lawmakers to pass laws on things they know nothing about.

I remember a while back a woman was trying to get The Soprano's off the air. Funny thing was, she never even saw it. This reminds me of most of these game issues. It's like we live in bizzaro world. The more dim-witted adults seem to believe that age is the only factor in knowledge. I am older, hence i know more, therefore I can make that decision for you.

I know if I was this kids son I'd stick him right into an old persons home as soon as possible. That way, his old ideals can slowly decompose along with his body. Sorry gramps, just cause technology scares you doesn't mean you can stop intelligent people from using it for fun.

» HA, this wont ever happen

This violates the First Amendment and if it gets passed, every game developer can sue the state of NY, take it to the supreme court and win.

If this does get passed then it will lead to a whole lot more then just games being taken into off sections.

Typical black man trying to play the role of the victim. If he was white, he wouldn't be doing this. Colored people always think they're the victim and that racism needs to stop, when THEY Are the racist ones.

» Racial and Religious Violence?

So... I expect this law to cover black-on-white violence (GTA:SA), as well as Muslim-on-Christian (Assassin's Creed)?

I just think that this is another 'the minority are always the victims against the evil white-Christian' suits.

It's SICK how we still divide our own people into groups of color, creed, and religion, even after the accomplishments of Dr. King.

But, I guess money talks...

» Wait, wait, wait.

You're blaming racism on the minorities?

Jesus Christ.

» BS like always

I don't think any game could get away with racism in today's world. Somehow Viva Pinata was accused of being racist! Everything else that's prohibited isn't clearly defined and asking retailers to install an adults only section into their stores is ridiculous for only a few games. If politicians are going to try to block certain games, why do they do it in the stupidest way possible? Oh yeah they do everything in the stupidest way possible. Example: the only way to stop the terrorists is to allow george wanker bush to tap everybody's phone and now look through their mail without a warrant! They keep chipping away our constitutional rights one by one...

Politicians always say that they are thinking about the poor helpless children being exposed to "murder simulators" (a Jackass Thompson quote) when they try over and over to ban rocknroll...er I mean video games.

Oh, those poor helpless kids with roofs over there heads, food on the table, clothes on their backs.

Meanwhile right at this very moment a child is being beaten, another raped, and another has abusive parents or other abusive adults. Thousands upon thousand of other children are hungry, dirty, lack proper education, do not have access to regular health care, are homeless, countless others have no parents.

Why are these issues more important than video games?

In my opinion, not 1 more dollar should be spent on the "war on drugs" or banning violent video games while there are child smuggling sex rings, homeless/abandoned/ or unloved children.

To me these issues are infinitely more important. It sickens me that there are so many abuses of children in this country that no one seems to care about. Especially the politicians.

I do not get it. I am a parent. I will and have taught my children that video games are make believe. I tell them that in the real world you cannot go and bash someone over the head with a baseball bat....but in the video game you can. Video games are no different than fantasy books were in the 1700's. They are no different than rocknroll was in the 50's. Conservatives FEAR change...always have, always will. I sometimes wonder what will be the next medium that the religious intolerant conservative nuttchuggers go after next. Maybe it has not been invented yet.

Someday this madness will stop and video games will be no different than movies, music, books, etc. And the religious right/neocons will move on to something else to fear, hate, and will want to ban/eradicate.

And the suffering of the poor helpless children will go on, and on, and on.

Frack Jackass Thompson, Hillarythefacis tpig Clinton, Joe Lieberman and Bill O'nazi Riley.

» well...yeah

It is the minorities that always complain about racism. Not saying its there fault but whites can be victimized too.
