NPD US: Wii still king, Xbox 360 outsold PS3 in October 2008

Seems Michael Pachter wasn't off the mark when he predicted that the Xbox 360 would outsell the PlayStation 3 in October. NPD has revealed the hardware sales figures for last month and, true enough, the Microsoft console sold more units than Sony's multimedia monster.

Be that as it may, both consoles still paled in comparison to the Wii's sales. The Sony PlayStation Portable also bowed down to the Nintendo DS in terms of sales. Here's how the hardware race went down:
  • Wii - 803,000
  • Nintendo DS - 491,000
  • Xbox 360 - 371,000
  • PSP - 193,000
  • PlayStation 3 - 190,000
We're already coming into the holiday season, so it'll be interesting to see if Sony manages to bring their sales numbers up. It's gonna be hard, though, seeing as how the company is still standing strong against a PS3 price cut.

Over on the software side, Xbox 360 titles dominated the charts. Fable 2 got the top spot with the Wii Fit and Balance Board bundle coming in at a distant second. The only PS3 titles to penetrate the top ten were SOCOM: Confrontation and LittleBigPlanet at number 7 and 8, respectively.
  1. Fable II (Xbox 360) - 790K
  2. Wii Fit w/ balance board (Wii) - 487K
  3. Fallout 3 (Xbox 360) - 375K
  4. Mario Kart w/ wheel (Wii) - 290K
  5. Wii Play w/ remote (Wii) - 282K
  6. Saints Row 2 (Xbox 360) - 270K
  7. SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation (PS3) - 231K
  8. LittleBigPlanet (PS3) - 215K
  9. NBA 2K9 (Xbox 360) - 202K
  10. Dead Space (Xbox 360) - 193K

» Quite surprising

Was expecting LBP to be on the top 3. O_o

» LBP

As cool as LittleBigPlanet is, Sony completely dropped the ball marketing the game. I've come to the conclusion the Sony needs to can every marketing employee working on the PlayStation brand.

» Don't forget...

LBP came out at the very end of Oct...so that is only like a weeks worth of sales...

» Poor PS3

Whats going on with the PS3?

Forget the console sales, since that is already bad. Look at the games. LBP is a big game for them, and it lost to an average game like Saints Row 2.

Fallout 3, a big game for the PS3 and 360, isnt even top 10 for the PS3.

Next month isnt even going to be close in terms of game sales, since GOW2 is in the equation, and it will be in the millions. Lets see what effect GOW2 has on 360 console sales, and more important, its effect on PS3 sales. Wii will still take number one. That thing is like currency.

First week is usually the biggest though. Sony have been marketing this on a decent scale. I think the biggest mistake they make is with their lack of limited edit/pre-order offers to push the core base to get in early. Maybe the game is over priced as well. Probably would of sold double or triple the amount at $40.

Bioshock PS3 and Motorstorm 2 were the biggest disappointments . Resistance 2 should sell decently in November. PS3 had MGS4 earlier in the year, now it's MS turn with GoW2.

» Im Wandering

I own all 3 systems and enjoy them all. I been wandering tho about the 360 sales figures and how true they really are. How much of these sales are people having to rebuy the 360? Seems like everytime i go into BB now the only people buying them are the ones replacing their broken systems or can wait to get one back from being repaired. Heck they are getting cheap enough to buy, why not replace that old system u know is going to break. The Wii i do believe and same with the PS3. With that said people complain how much the PS3 is then turn around and probly buy 2-3 360's to get 1 to work. So they actually pay more and still not get built in wifi like its in the Wii and PS3 or blueray as in the PS3. Dont get me worng but i enjoy my 360 and yes im on my 3rd 1, but thats including a repaired 1 and 1 i traded in and gamestop that started messing up (just told them i wanted to upgrade haha) So id like to know how muhc of the 360 sales are repeats compared to the rest.

» Hmmm

You have a point, however even though some people rebuy consoles sales are still sales, and M$ still makes money out of this. They could care less if you are on your 20th console.

Also, do you really think that more than 50% of those sales are from people that are rebuying the 360?

» problem with bioshock and motorstorm is that...

If you want bioshock that badly you probably played it on 360 or PC. Motorstorm is cool but with LBP, R2, Fallout3, CoD5 all came out lately I am running out of fund to get it. GOW2 is an awesome game though. I enjoy it very much but I am almost done with the single player (yeah I take it slowly) I am not sure how long horde will keep me interested.

» I am thinking of replacing my old 360

Well said. So far I am lucky enough to not have a RROD yet but I guess my 1 year old system might be on the blink. I am not sure these $199 version are built as tough as the Elite or not. I am not even sure if they are the falcon machine? Or they are all falon or beyong now?

by SupaDawg - 2008-11-13 17:19
» 360

Lavino, afaik they are all falcon now, and there is a new mainboard in the wild that's supposed to be even better.

For the record, the claimed failure rate on the early 360's (prior to falcon) was around 33%. Falcon is apparently less than 10%... which is still high, but not nearly as bad.

For the record, I'm still on my first 360, although two of my friends have had consoles fail on them.

Replacements aren't counted as sales and all 360s are still under warranty.

by spinny - 2008-11-13 22:59
» random

Hmm.. random maths procrastination after what SupaDawg said.

If 10% of 360s die then

1/10 fails.

10/100 fails and of the 10 fails that get replaced one of those will fail again.

If we then go to the 371,000 that got sold last month, 37,100 owners would found that theirs broke, 3,700 would break twice, 370 would break 3 times 37 would break four and 3 people will have their xbox break five times xD

Would suck to be one of those three last month

oh well back to work!

by spinny - 2008-11-13 23:06
» work is boring

For every million sales of the old 360s if the 33% failure rate is true then statistically there should be a guy (or girl) who had to have their 360 replaced 12 times. how unlucky?

by chessboxer - 2008-11-13 23:26
» not entirely correct about the warranty

The 3 year warranty only covers RROD. If you have a faulty DVD ROM (disc tray or unreadable disc) or some other hardware problem (like E74) then it's not covered after 1yr.

by [DVSDevise] - 2008-11-14 00:57
» ...

RROD is the main problem. Hardware problems out of warrany can still be repaired. But obviously there is a charge for service and parts. I would guess, most people probably pay for the repair because it's cheaper than buying a new console. Believe it or not the PS3 has had it's own problems. I know 2 our of 3 people that have had problems with their PS3. One was disc drive ejecting problem and the other was a bricked PS3 because of Sony's dodgy 2.0 update.

I think it's amazing that PS3 fanbois try and pull the "360 sales are probably because of hardware problems". If that was the case, why is the software attach rate over 8 games per console. Maybe each 360 owner owns 2 360's and 16 games on average. PPPPPPPlease. That argument is so lame. It's the same as me saying that people buy the PS3 only to play Blu-Ray movies.

» why is ps3 not selling ?

if there was no playstation i wouldn't even play video games it doesn't make sense

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

I agree. I'm disappointed in the LBP sales figures. I expected more as well. It is CRAZY that WiiFit and Wii Play sold more.... Talk about powerhouses!!!

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-14 06:38
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Wicklet makes a very valid point. The same is said about DS sales as well.

Either way we are still seeing the "clensing" of the new 360 sku. If these sales figures can hold for a quarter THEN and ONLY THEN will MS have something to cheer about.

by ISOHaven - 2008-11-14 06:43
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Mine broke three times before I sold my fourth refurb on eBay.

Of any of them that die inside the 33% figure....wouldn't be in warranty?

The original production line of the 360 had a 50% failure rate. Those are now out of warranty (I believe???) and those would be the ones that people are re-buying now.

With that kind of failure rate it would be easy to mathematically claim that 100% of the 371,000 are re-buys.

» Sony drops the ball marketing every game

I didn't even know Resistance 2 came out... Whereas there are paper and TV ads for every 360 game under the sun, along with some multiplat titles like Fallout 3.

I think I saw the Resistance 2 commercial once. I see the Fable 2 commercial every day. And I think I only saw 1 LBP ad in a mag. I don't even see PS3 commercials anymore

MS does have more money to throw at that kind of stuff, but Sony could at least do something. They're killing themselves in this area
