DS Warehouse - Image 1 Now this be crazy! The April results from NPD show that the DS outsold all other platforms combined, thanks to its whopping one million units sold. Satoru Iwata, adopt me now.

Sweet bajeezus! Can you imagine what drove everyone to suddenly up and buy a new DS unit? Could it be that there's a secret society in defense of DS sales, much that when the PSP outsold the DS the first week of April in Japan, they rang the alarm and sent everyone out to buy one, or two, or all?!!?

Uh-mazing. Here are the numbers; see for yourself:
  • Nintendo DS -- 1,040,000
  • Wii -- 340,000
  • Xbox 360 -- 175,000
  • PlayStation 2 -- 172,000
  • PlayStation 3 -- 127,000
  • PlayStation Portable -- 116,000
Look at that, the PS2 even outsold the PSP! Looks like the price drop really did come in good timing. Get the hint, Sony.

Then again, cumulatively, it can be traced to a decrease in game releases this month as well. Yeah, now I do remember having complained of all those dry On Shelves posts for April.

Still... "There are no games on other platforms so let's go buy a DS!" ? I cannot wrap my head around this logic. Nonetheless, congratulations, Ninty! To Sony and Microsoft, pump out those games now!

Not surprising. The DS has a crapload of good games.

by Serosis - 2009-05-14 16:17
» well

Nintendo handhelds have always sold good, and they are more reliable than most if not all other handhelds.

I only bought a PSP because of the other capabilities it had besides games, now I don't even use the fricken thing because it just isn't that "good" anymore.

» well..

The PSP does have some good games coming out in the future (I think the next is next month sometime), but yeah, it is severely lacking in the good games department.

» I love when people say [whatever] has better games

Because that's a total matter of opinion.

I own a DS and a PSP, and I haven't touched my DS in years. I don't find any of the games to be personally appealing.

PSP, on the other hand, with its games keeps me interested.

In the end, whatever system YOU think has better games is just that: your opinion.

Get your head out of your arse.

It's a fact that the DS has far more good games than the PSP does.

the DSi launch in april maybe? this alone explains it...

how sooooo many people went out and bout a DSi, even when the Lite was selling hella well, and furthermore beat ALL OF THE OTHER CONSOLES COMBINED!?!?!??!!?

wtf is wrong with people nowadays? dont get me wrong, the DSi isnt bad, but with those staggering numbers, what the hell are people thinking?

there cant be possibly that many spoiled kids out there, right? *remembers youtube*

» Actually

The statement "the DS has more good games than the PSP" is false.

Just because the system has more games doesn't mean that it has more good games.

I own 43 PSP games and my DS games are in the 30s. I've sold quite a few DS games because, aside from what other people say, they're really not good enough to keep, while I've yet to sell any PSP games(though two of them are going to be sold.)

The DS sure does have a ton of games, but about 90% of those games are shovelware. Alot of the non shovelware titles aren't even that great. The fact that the PSP doesn't get many games means that the games that it does get are usually playable or good.

Are you going to find any titles that are similar to the Syphon Filter games and play anywhere near as well? No. The GTA games and Driver 76, atleast aside from China Town wars which I don't even know how good it is, and no, you won't. You have some decent action/adventure titles, the PSP has it's own action/adventure titles that, in my opinion, beat out some of those on the DS. Gurumin for example beats out every standard action/adventure on the DS. So does God of War.

Aside from remakes and ports. Does the DS have any RPG titles as good as Brave Story, Tales of the World, etc? No. Tactical games, the DS does have, and so does the PSP. Jeane D Arc, Wild ARMs XF, Metal Gear Acid.

That's nothing more than scratching the surface of good games on the PSP. How about racing games? We have multiconsole games like the Need for Speed series on the PSP that are actually playable, Test Drive Unlimited(best on the 360,) the Wipeout games, Midnight Club LA Remix, etc. The DS has Mario Kart and it can't compare to any unfortunately.

Star Ocean First Departure, Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron, Mega Man Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X, Gundam Battle series, Crisis Core, Resistance Retribution, Field Commander, and the list could go on for awhile.

The majority of you who complain how the PSP has no good games are guaranteed to not be looking very hard. How many PSP games do you guys own, how many DS games do you own? I can guarantee you don't own as many DS games as their are good PSP games.

Here'a question. If you haven't played all the games on the PSP that are out there and worth playing, then what difference does it make if one system has only 50 good games and another has 100?

by m3rox - 2009-05-14 19:00
» .

The DS has well over 200 good games, compared to the PSP's what, 50 maybe? I'm only stating facts here.

by hush404 - 2009-05-14 19:31
» My 2 cents

I think alot of this "DS has better games, period" bull is from people who own only the DS.

I've had a PSP for years now and while some times games were slim pickins' I've had a ton of fun with numerous games. This year I got around to getting myself a DS, as I keep hearing how amazing it is for games. Through my experience... I still prefer my PSP.

I have tried a TON of DS games (thank you piracy :P) and even purchased a few favs, but at the end of the day I still return to my PSP for good ol core gaming. Nintendo's handheld shares the strong points of any Nintendo machine - that being Nintendo's first party games. The Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Animal Crossing series etc are really what makes the system shine and beyond that it's hard to find "Great" games. IMO of course.

When all is said and done I dig the unique games that I can play on the DS. The Zelda and Ninja Gaiden touch only mechanic is a lot of fun. However I get much more enjoyment out of Burnout and Socom and Killzone and locoroco and countless other titles on my PSP.

The second u claimed the psp has more good games than the ds, i stopped reading ur comment for it lost all credibility. its not even a matter of opinion. the ds has 10 times the amount of good games the psp has, hands down. Infact, u cant even compare these 2 handhelds anymore, the ds is in an entirely different league. Funny though when u think bout it, the psp ended up being the inferior one.

Agreed, Sony_Player. Very hypocritical comment by M3rox. Although, it may be a bit more comedic absurdity then just a flat out lie.

Okay Shazman1984, you show me all the games that are better then the PSP's top 25, (which is hilarious in itself, because remember if the DS has 10 times the amount as you say, you have to show me 250 games that beat the PSP's) and I'll honestly answer which ones are even decent. Then we'll see if it's a matter of opinion or so-called fact coming from you.

This goes to you to M3rox, I think you troll these boards, but that's beside the point. If the PSP has 50, and the DS has 200, please show me, I would love to see what you consider good.

» Games

I think it comes down to preference. I have 21 games for my DS and 42 on the PSP. There are great games on both systems, but I prefer to play my PSP because it has more of the games I like - Macross Ace Frontier was my favourite game of 2008 by a very long margin, followed by Gundam vs Gundam, Crisis Core, Disgaea, Star Ocean and God of War.

On DS I'd say my favourite games of 2008 are Luminous Arc 2, Kira Kira and The World Ends With You. But I play on DS les than my PSP.

Lastly, I would say that although the DS has more "good" games on it, it also has far more bad ones - it's cheaper and easier to develop for DS so it gets a lot of dross. At the end of the day, do you want a portable gaming device (DS) or a portable console? There's a world of difference between the two.

by Digitus - 2009-05-14 21:29
» Hm.

Well I'm not surprised but I'm impressed. The DS just has so many games out to satisfy the masses in all demographics/pools of interest that most people can never really get bored. PSP, for me, has really been disappointing. I sold 2 so far but I'm going to buy a third one later when Birth By Sleep comes out and then maybe that'll get me back in a PSP mood.

But out od Nintendo's systems right now I prefer the DS over Wii. The DS just has more games to please the "core" gamer rather than the "core" gamer's granny, and thats why its still getting titles to keep my interest.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I own both a DS and PSP and its obvious that both systems have great games. Arguably the DS has more great games (I only buy the best games (nothing below 85%, that kind of thing) and my DS library is huge because of that. Mario Kart, Pokemon, New Mario, all 3 Kirby games, both Advance Wars, Castlevania, Animal Crossing. They're all brilliant. Whereas on the PSP I just play the same select few games over and over - but they're still great games. Stuff like GTA and Monster Hunter can't be played properly on the DS but there's such a void of original content. Everything is a direct port, an enhanced port or whatever of games I already played.

The DS is perfect but the PSP could be doing so much better than it's current position.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Wow. I laugh at the average persons ignorance.

Facts are facts. For the "average person", the DS has better games then the PSP. That is fact based on factual sales numbers. There are people that think the PSP has better games then the DS and they are also correct. But they are a minority.

Fact is, everyone is right. Yet no one had the intellect to realize the difference lies with population numbers.

» @m3rox

You're such a d.bag!

Check this list :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_Portable_games

Their are 580 or so games in the current list, not including games for the future. (and most of these games were US or EU, not many Jap only)

Sure DS has more, but where do you come up with such retarded figures like 50 games for psp?

I have about 150, and I live in Shanghai and I saw a a massive set of psp games all archived on dvd and their were tonnes of dvds!

F### I wish you would do us all a favour and die. You're the one who needs to get your head out of your ass and do some f###ing research before making retarded statements like these.

EAT A D1CK AND DIE!

moslty i find that sarcasm doesn't fare that well on the internets.

anyways the list must be faked.

» COMMENT TROLLS!!!!

let's just enjoy our handhelds boys and girls

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-05-17 13:38
» Proof, people are incredibly stupid

Why is the DSi selling so ridiculously?

What kind of MORON will pay $40 more for the same? Is 2 VGA (yeah, when's the last time you heard that term) cameras with worthless low res photo editing worth the price difference? What about the half-assed AAC player? What about the worthless internet browsing that runs out of memory before loading ANY page?

At least they overclocked the DS's crappy CPU, but that only created mildly better incompatible software. Looks like there's lines of idiots ready to make the pricey "upgrade."

What the hell is wrong with people? The DS lite was actually an improvment, but the DSi is a dumbass kid's toy! How could kids even be entertained by this?

Now all Nintendo needs to do to boost sagging Wii sales is introduce a new "Uss" model that's the same thing in a new case, but has useless new features!

Nintendo could change anything, call it new, and sell millions!

Let's say they add things the Wii should have had all along like DVD playback, built in microphone and chat, worthwhile web browser, etc.
