NPD January 2008 sales numbers: PS3 outsells Xbox 360 for the first time

The NPD Group's much awaited January 2008 sales numbers for both video game hardware and software are finally in, revealing that the Sony PlayStation 3 outsold the Microsoft Xbox 360 in the U.S. for the first time. While the software side enjoyed growth from the same period of last year, total hardware units sold fell short of expectations.

Following Microsoft's announcement of its console's shortage, only 230,000 went off shelves - 20.30% lower than expected. Sony's machine, on the other hand, is the only one that exceeded the numbers that the market anticipated. Around 269,000 PS3 units were sold - 28.52% higher than the expected 209,300 - marking the first time it fared better than the competing Xbox 360 since launch.

Nintendo wasn't able to meet expectations, which The Sim Exchange attributes to supply constraints. Casual gamers' demand for the white hot Wii allowed post-holiday projections to reach 396,900, but it fell short by 30.96% after only selling 274,000 units.

The DS underperformed the most with 251,000 units sold, 48.11% below the expected 483,700, yet remained above 230,000 of the Sony PSP. However, Sony's handheld did not disappoint anyone after selling only 1.29% behind expectations.

Activision is still dominant in the software sales list thanks to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on top, along with contributions of both Wii and Xbox 360 versions of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Check out the numbers below, courtesy of The Sim Exchange.

i say damage control cause the PS3 outsold them in their stronghold.

what are gonna do now Microsoft??? it's sad that your highest card (Halo) has already been used while the PS3 hasn't even had a decent hand but still you are already losing all your winnings which you got even before Sony and Nintendo sat down on the NextGen poker table.

I guess that means the 360 is going to start slipping until Ninja Gaiden 2 comes out and with Forza 2, DOA and Halo wars.

Wow u really are a playslave it outsold it one month n ur throwing a party.It was a lackluster month 4 gaming with the shortages of the Xbox 360 and Wii.I still don't see any Wii or 360s at my store.After the shortages are over sales will go back to normal.I wouldn't make comment like "haha the ps3 will outsell the 360 from now on!" or "haha the ps3 is catching up to the Wii." you have to see how well it sell 4 a couple months b4 u make such a comment.Because u don't wanna look like a fool if sales go back 2 normal with ps3 in third place.

I don't think there's a storage of 360. It's just that people aren't willing to buy the arcade version. I see a lot of acrade version of the 360 at Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Game Stop, and other major electronic store here in Chicago.

and to clarify it is not the PS3 fans who are against "waiting" to accurately predict this gen... from the start we are the ones who have been "let's wait for the PS3 to atleast reach one year"... "let's wait for the exclusives to come out"... "it is too early to declare the 360 as the winner, let's wait for 2008"...

but the XBots are like "the PS3 is dead!!!!"... "it will never catch up so why wait"... "Play Beyond? More like Wait Beyond PS3 fantards"... they want to declare the current sales on that time as the gospel and not willing to wait cause they want to stamp the 360 as the victor already...

now that the 360 is being outsold consistently in Asia and Europe and now even the US entering 2008 it is the 360 boys who suddenly sees the importance of waiting... how ironic is that?

it will never be the PS3 owners who will look like a fool cause the XBots are the fools they are the ones who have always been making premature declarations.

when ms and nintendo can fix their shortages.The ps3 did outsell the the Wii for one month in Japan,but guess what it went back down to normal.That's why I'm repeating wait and see b4 u make comments or else if sales go back to normal.You'll be the one who looks like the fool if everything goes back to normal,and ppl will laugh it u 4 calming "haha the 360 is over! and the Wii is next!." did i say the 360 is over? or the the wii is next? or any "hahaha" as you claim i did? did i give any judgment? the strongest comment i made was ask Microsoft what they are going to do now since they have already laid down their strongest ammo even before the PS3 fired it's first shot... and looking at the horizon right now there isn't any and they should find one cause the PS3 just outplayed them in their home court.

i just said that PS3 is proving the doubters wrong especially those who never wanted to give it a chance...

now mr. xmb go back and read my comments before you start making declarations on my behalf...

as for waiting that's all the PS3 community has been asking for from the get go, but nobody wanted a part of that cause they want it dead even before it got off the floor... glad to see people seeing things the way we've seen it from the start... guess we are right after all.

These statistics include hardware and software. If you're talking about hardware alone, the PS3 outsold the 360 in all of 2007 so this really isn't the first time the PS3 has outsold the 360 unless you include software sales.

cause until then the 360 is just third consistently which is the actual "normal" status that you've been blubbering about.

back to normal??? we are at normal... consistent weekly wordwide numbers Wii 1st, PS3 2nd, 360 3rd... the only difference is that this month the 360 can't lay claim in any region, they just got beat in all of them... but still Wii 1st, PS3 2nd, 360 3rd worldwide.

the "back to normal" you are talking about is back in history... join us in the present to know and realize the real status of the industry.

we are in a month when no exclusive games is out.. at least not important one...

The sales was for the PS3 all this months but not in the US... but if this month the ps3 surpass the 360 well.. thats hurts..

when will the 360 will get high sales? with GTA and is a multiplayer game... just that the 360 will have an additional content..

But what will happen with MGS4? or with GT5? or with LBP? or with resistance 2? or killzone? etc... the only good thing that the 360 have this year is like 3 exclusive and only worth to buy for me (Ninja Gaiden) because the other ones I looked the videos and, you know...

Like quixand said... the 360 shoot all the bullets in the end of 2007 to not letting survive the ps3... but this year the ps3 not only will have tons of AAA titles... will have kick ass system updates and accesories like home, in games XMB and play TV...

But like the king guy... lets see the other month but something is for sure... PS3 will reign in the EU and Japan territories... just lets see how will be the US in the couple of months but this year is the PS3 year... no doubt

ms 2008 lineup they will supposedly announce it at GDC.So we can't pass judgment on 360 08' lineup yet.Now back to sales I think it's evident this happened because of Nintendo and Microsoft shortages.When did I said I wanted the 360 to outsell anything?lol

They BOTH been saying all month their short.MS lost of their major 3 manufactures thats the reason for the shortage it was news a few months ago but everyone seems to of forgotten. They also said that they will experience shortages in the first part of 08.

I want to the ps3 outsell the 360? you see... the difference many people here I have the three systems.... I don't want nobody wins because the competition is always good for the consumer...

About the exclusive games I was talking about Halo Wars, Too Human, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, fable 2 and ninja gaiden... many people are with alan wake... not me but lets see... if there are more games exclusive for the 360 that I doubt let me know to look at it... and about the 360 shortage... there really some places without the 360 console? yes, have troubles to send 360 to the stores but i never see some place without the console... sorry if I'm wrong in that one.... because if that true sony isn't even sending the 80gb to stores either but thats not even the same situation either

hey stealth! are you a microsoft xbox 360 advertisement guy? those are old and news titles you have mentioned. forza 2 and doa is already out years ago. ninja gaiden 2 will also be ported to ps3 with extras etc that will not be seen on 360 version.

I've never seen such a big list of mediocre, uninspiring games since the Atari systems.

I also cannot believe you post "LocoRoco Cocoreccho!"... A screensaver WTF? I'm sorry but your post is nothing more than a copy/paste of the upcoming PS3 games section from Wikipedia, you didn't even trim out the games that people don't give 2 poos about.

Oh and I like the PS3 more than 360 but you've got to be a bit daft if you think it's going to outsell the 360. It's simply got more good games and has been out much longer than anything else. Even if it isn't doing so hot in Japan.

I'm sure it's due to the blueray player because as a gaming machine the 360 is still kicking sony's tail. I've even considered getting a ps3 now that blueray is def. going to be the format so m$ better hurry and make a 360 blueray addon soon or i'll be getting that huge piece of plastic to play movies and ratchet and clank.

Actually, buddy, you are the one who's being blind here. Do you know how much "before the NPD data" did Microsoft issue their statement? The day before. Yep that's right. MS waited till the day before NPD data came out to issue a statement saying they were experiencing shortages. That, to me, sounds more like they were waiting until the last moment, hoping that these numbers would somehow change, but when 360 sales numbers underperformed (per their own expectations - I don't believe they have sources inside NPD, though I could be wrong), they had to perform SOME sort of damage control.

On the flip side, nothing wrong with damage control, though. Sony has done this in the past, as far as I know. Corporations routinely lie to cover their a$5e5 in front of stockholders, and I believe most people older than 16 already know that.

However, if you believe MS has any more integrity than Sony, you are mistaken. As for the link for my claim, here goes:

Why do you all fight and argue over who outsells who? They ARE just game consoles. Game consoles are meant to be played and to have fun with, not to fight and argue over. Anyway, what do you all get from this? If a PS3 outsells an Xbox360 you don't get anything. The only person who gets something out of this is the game companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. Maybe QJ should just stop telling everyone who outsells who or who is winning the "Console Selling Marathon".

Well said. no one gets anything from console sales except the companies who are selling them. but there are a few reasons why people care. first and foremost is the rivalry between 360 and PS3 owners. (I think it started when the PS3 came out with its $600 pricetag.) the second and probably most often overlooked by people who make claims like yours, is the more people who buy a system, the more games we get. developers look at the number of consoles owned as a number of potential buyers for their game(s). Unless they are already signed to a console, they look at the number of potential buyers to decide to go PS3/360 exclusive or multiplatform. So, we do get SOMETHING, however insignificant it might sound to you.

All they do is talk s*** about the Xbox. The PS3 and the 360 are both good systems, get over it. It is inexcusable for Microsoft to not have enough consoles available to meet demand. I havent seen an Elite available anywhere for months. They are only hurting themselves and their stockholders.

Some of the real, best games like Halo, Killzone, etc are only on one console, so that the one console gets the most money it can get.. Most of the little games that no one pays attention to are usually multi platform.
