NPD Group: Nintendo wins in the first half of 2007, PS3 trailing behind |

Now that June has come and gone, the NPD Group finally released the resulting numbers of the console war from the period of March to June, and the entire first half of 2007. Check out the numbers in the graphs Ars Technica has provided to illustrate how each console fared, and judge for yourselves.
For the March-June graph, we can clearly see that the Wii shot through the ceiling with impressive numbers, with Xbox 360 going second and the PlayStation 3 falling in third. It should be noted that Sony has a big plan despite its losses though, and the fruits of its labor will clearly show should Blu-ray win the format wars.
On the handheld side, the DS towers over ALL systems, even the next-gen consoles. The PSP, while having lower numbers, is doing relatively well and is the only system whose numbers steadily increase as each month passes.
Moving on to the console sales charts for the first half of 2007, the order of how each console fared well is just about the same as how they did in the period of June and March: again, the Wii manages to take the lead with 2.1 million consoles sold, followed by the Xbox 360's 1.2 million and PlayStation 3's 763,000 falling in third.
As for the handhelds, the DS still reigns supreme over all with a whopping 2.6 million happy little units moving into gamers' hands, and the PSP following at a competent 1.2 million.
The numbers show that Nintendo is a big mover and shaker for the first half of the year, but with Sony's PS3 getting a hefty US$ 100 price cut, and the Xbox 360 rumored to get US$ 50 slashed from its retail price, there's no way of telling if the same results will show in the future.

They have to lower the price of the 360 sooooooon!
How can a new console with last generation technology, with graphics clearly from last generation, be doing so *****ing well? I seriously question the people buying last generation technology at a premium price as though it was new, Wii perhaps Nintendo should have called it faeces. I'm interested in one thing, what is the attach rate of the wii, I want to know if these casual gamers are indeed buying games, or are the hardcore whom are getting *****ed slapped the only ones actually contributing to the attach rate figure.
Wii, its a one off thing. Big instal base yet no use making games 4 the Wii since (casual)gamers wont play nethin apart from those multi-mini games...
But its no use if ppl other than real gamers buy it....adults managers uncles aunties wont suddenly be buying [LOTS OF GAMES] since the [Wii is like a game itself] - eventually wearing off

the wii is a great but before its annoucement i was guessing that their new console would be super powerfull after all they had made a killing on POKEMON and the nintendo DS.
the wii is so great. the psp should be killing the ds. the ds is so boring and is nowhere close to as cool as a hacked psp. The wii needs wiiware and a demo channel to stay strong.
ps3 sucks because its expensive! who cares about brilliant graphics, if the game sucks. after 30min playing ps3, you get borred. E stand for ENTERTEAIMENT. btw: sony did a lot of things wrong in the past, and now they get everything back.

Funny to see disgruntled psx-era gamers calling themselves teh hardcore gamer and nintendo gamers casual trash not worthy, eventhjough its nintendo and its fanbase, together with sega gamer, that are the real hardcore gamers. Uh, Im a hardcore gamer and my first console was a NES when I was 8. Then SNES, then Sega, then Sega CD, then N64, then Dreamcast, then PS1, then Xbox, then Xbox 360, then PS3, then Wii... And guess what, Wii sucks balls and so does Nintendo. Dont get a big head about selling the most units ninty fanboy, they are only selling because they are uber cheap, not because they are any good. Just like last gen, ps2 sold because it was cheap and had a lot of (crap) games, not because it was the better system. Even Gamecube was better than ps2! I love how people compare the Wii to the PS3/360 sales. In reality, you should compare it to the ps2/xbox era since its the same technology. So when the Wii reaches 120 million, call me. Otherwise don't compare it with the 360/PS3 because it isn't even in the same bracket. I love how in the begining everyone was like "Nintendo isn't competing with Sony/MS". Then when they actually do well, everyone switches tune and starts saying the Wii is crushing the other systems. Get over it. Nintendo hasn't even released a next gen system yet. So yeah, Nintendo has 10 million sold, nice work. Still 110 million to go till they catch Sony. Good luck Nintendo, you will need it.
I too am hardcore, owned every system except the pippin and cd-i. Most of you don't even know what those are. The people who say PS3 sucks don't own one or haven't played one. Your beloved Wii is equal to the PS2 and won't ever pass it because the technology is about to be phased out. Enjoy your mini games and playing with 80 year old ladies online. I hope you enjoy what Nintendo is doing to the industry. And yes, Nintendo sucks now and Sony rules. Its a fact, get over it.
It's amazing how silly some people are. The Wii is the "next generation". Just because it's not very powerful doesn't mean it's not "next gen". To be honest sales figures don't say which machine is best, just which is most popular/cheapest/well marketed. Look at the Dreamcast. For it's time it was an amazing powerful machine, had fantastic games, but it fell flat on it's ass. Some people loved it, and to this day they still do. But it failed. If the PS3 ever went that way it doesn't mean it was bad, just that it failed... But we all know it won't go that way. To the people stressing about the Wii, try a few games. Super Paper Mario if one of the finest games I've played. The gfx are pretty average but the style is amazing and the puzzles superb. Does it matter if the console you have sells less or more? Surely the important thing is you have fun with it?
Evern more funny to see people claim to play games since snes, then bash wii, they prolly think we are going to believe them :P
I own a ps3 and its garbage, i hardly even turn it on because theres nothing to do but fold proteins.

Its funny that you say "I hope you enjoy what Nintendo is doing to the industry", when it was Sony that opened up gaming to a casual audience with the PSX. If you want to start playing the blame game, then you ought to start off blaming Sony. And for the record, in terms of technology: Wii > GC > PS2 so the Wii is in no way equal to the PS2.

There is pros and cons for every system guys Xbox 360 Pros -Good graphics, hundreds of games, lots of content download, demos, awesome online community(you get what you pay for), good warranty, awsome line up of exlusives games coming soon. (ex.Halo 3, Mass Effect) Cons-Pay to use online, crap hardware build (33% systems fail). Wii Pros-Decent games and great games coming soon(ex Mario Galaxy), motion sensitive controller, great family fun, download classics from the store, free online, built in wi-fi, bc with NGC. Affordable Cons-Crap graphics, needs more better games. PS3 Pros- Awsome graphics, powerful hardware, free online, built in wifi, bluetoth(in get 60 or 80GB), download ps1 games for psp and ps3 from psn store, psp conectivity to share content. Good games coming soon (Warhawk, MSG4) Cons- Expensive, no good games out right now, crap online(compared to Xbox Live), by lookig at these stats Wii dominates , 360 is righ behind and PS3 is failing

You put 360 as good graphics and ps3 as amazing. I beg to differ. I have both consoles and both are hooked up through separate HDMI ports on a 56" LCD HDTV and I can tell you from experience that so far 360 has the best graphics. The blutooth controllers were also a bad idea, they drop signal just like the headsets for the phones. I cant count how many times Ive been going through ninja gaiden and had it lose signal while it continuously caused me to run in one direction. So thats more of a negative than a positive. Sure, ps3 can download ps1 games to the ps3, but at a cost of over $10 each for all three of the titles they have up in the store. Please, dont make me laugh! Again, psp connectivity isnt really a pro in this case, since both consoles can connect to the psp. But only one console can connect directly to your home network and stream movies, music, pictures, etc etc instantly and that is the Xbox 360. I do agree with the *you get what you pay for* comment to the fullest. PSN is free, yes. But PSN is also bone dry. The 360 has OVER 100 demos to download right now, and that isnt counting full length movies, strategy videos, gamerpicture packs, themes, extra content for games, game trailers, etc etc etc. If one were to count every single download from Live it would easily reach into the millions. The PSN only has about 18 things to download in total, and only about 7 of them are demos. How about a pro for 360 is the fact that it allows for custom soundtracks with EVERY game. Or that the friends list and features are fully integrated into each game, instead of being only on the system startup screens. And some more cons of the ps3 would be stuff like very slow web browser. The fact that you have to install games before you can play them. The firmware updates take over 10 minutes to install (where as 360 takes less than 5 seconds). No rumble, so driving a dune buggy or shooting a cannon just feels wimpy now. Terrible ports, and only one good game to look forward to (MGS, which will also come to 360). I cant speak for Wii though, but since its from nintendo it cant be that exciting. Anyways, its obvious to me why the ps3 is in last place. Its this gens garbage console.
sony fans just cant live in a reality where their beloved console is being beaten by something thats just barely more powerful than the gamecube. Dont try to talk sense into them though, they have a bad case of denial ever since the ps3 flopped.
Just because your 13 or 14 dosnt mean every other gamer is that age......Iv been playing since the colecovision and I must say that I was at first really impressed with the wii....now....not so much. that is so true, the wii is what nintendo needed last gen. Their "next gen" console will have the graphics of the PS3/360 with the classic wii remote. They are digging themshelves a very large hole.
I agree with AoxomamoxoA (weird name btw). The 360 has better graphics (in gameplay and cutscenes) than the PS3. This I don't know why, Sony promised realistic amazing graphics but the 360 (promosing nothing, who knows if they actually bought the Sony crap) came on top in graphics. Also it's true that the controllers lose signal, although it doesn't really bother mcuh unless you were in a very hard level and when you're about to pass it you lose signal and you lose. Also it's true, theres almost download for PSN, it's like it didn't even exist... The truth is the only console worth buying is the 360 and if you have a big family then the Wii.

The portable are selling faster than the others, and the home consoles are selling in reverse (the latest sells less than the oldest...) LOL So bizarre. Anyway, the x360 is not selling a lot better than the ps3, those two are selling really bad. Anyway, I'm buying my ps3 in september (I'll help the charts LOL) or... my wii? I'm unsure. I mean, wii is fun, I like the boxing game, and ps3 is great for complex games like GTA (I LOVE). But should I wait a bit for a "next-gen" ? dunno
Nin realized they didn't need to depend on 3rd party dev so they just used old tech to make enjoyable games cheaply. when it comes down to it it's unlikely ps3/x360 can catch up to their sales. I think it just shows you that the other companies need to stop ***** waving their graphics and show what they can do with it. Perhaps this'll lead to more enjoyable games overall instead of the uninnovative sequals people mindlessly purchase.

metalspector speaks the truth. Japanese culture is actually very biased. They even teach their school children to refer to everyone who is not a japanese as *foreigner* instead of being open and tolerant of others. I guess you could call it nationalism, but its on a much larger scale than any other parts of the world. The 360 doesnt sell in ONE country not because it is a bad console, but because the japanese are stubborn on buying american products. You can say Im making this up, but when you get to college take a sociology class and you will be told the same things.

I just realized, its funny how sony fanboys used to say... *it doesnt matter about hardware, its the ammount of games you have to play* ...when xbox had the better hardware, but fewer games than the ps2. But now they flip flop and say... *well ps3 has the best hardware, we will have a game to play in...well...sometime next year?* ...and now 360 has over 250 games with many more lined up. Actually what I say is not baseless nonsense (or whatever you wanna call it), I just wanna give my opinion and you can't just accept my opinion that the 360 is the best. Sincerely I don't own any of the 3 consoles, but my friends do and I've played them and seriously the 360 was the best, the Wii second and the PS3 third (btw 11 of my friends in my neighborhood own a 360, 2 own a PS3 and 1 owns a Wii). I am thinking of buying a 360 cause xbox live and the awesome games with awesome graphics attached me to it but I still can't buy it since I gotta save first for new cymbals for my drum, for a new cellphone (Samsung A717) and then I would buy a 360. Anyways about following those 3 you mentioned I have never heard of MCS or Xman in a comment before and I just know AxoxomamoxoxA also likes the 360 more than the other consoles so I don't think I am trying to follow them... Actually I am not even a fanboy of MS cause I like my psp, I liked the PS1 and the N64 and I liked the SNES and GBA so actually I'm just a fanboy of good consoles XD.

Have you listened to yourselves? You may say you are 20 and enjoy "grown up" games but you all act like F***ing 8 year olds. When comparing current standings, what the future holds means jack. As of RIGHT NOW, the 360 is in the lead with the Wii rapidly approaching while the PS3 climbs at the same pace of the 360 only a year late. If current trends hold, the Wii will be on top in a matter of months. That's not to say that the PS3 can't challenge it, which is possible considering that it has some pretty decent games coming along, but so does the 360 and Wii. HOWEVER, I would like to point out that Sony is in a very similar situation as Sega was awhile back so I'm concerned. Wii is in the same situation the PS2 was in when it first launched but, (and I own a Wii) Nintendo is ignoring their hardcore audience despite what that are saying.

Even if the wii is selling the most consoles it doesn't matter because they are not selling games only consoles. The 360 is the one that is selling the most games right now even thought it is slipping in the hardware market. It looks like the Ps3 is increasing it sales that is also good because it s good that MS has competence because if they don't they are going to make everything like they did with the OS monopoly. (Sorry for my english not my first language.)
you say sony fanboys can't get a life. the PS3 has been out, what half a year. it has ages to live upto everything that sony says. you want 2 know about flopped consoles. gamecube (ok it was a great console, just got it and then no 3rd party support came), xbox 1 (after *****ing up the dreamcast, microsoft decided to steal everything about it and make a console in which they lost billions, biggest FLOP) You cant call a console that has been on the market for 8 months a flop, in 3 years, yes and by then wii would have already been updated, 360 would have stolen more things off the PS3, blu-ray will win the format war and PS3 will be outselling 360. just because a console is off 2 a rough start duznt mean that you should keep bagging it out.

The wii does overheat IF you leave wii connect 24 on all day during the summer and it is in a hot room. The fans turn off during this time and there have been reports of wii deaths. Also, another problem is that green dots randomly appear on some peoples screens. But this is nothing compared to xbox.
I see absolutely no reason why the Wii is selling better then the 360 and even the PS3 at this point. It's hard to argue that the 360 doesn't have games so I'll focus on the PS3. If you count up the fact that most of the PS3 buyers don't own a 360 it has a pretty big library for a first year console. The Darkness, Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Fall of Men, Motorstorm, Oblivion, Virtua Fighter 5, Fight Night Round 3 ect. Now compare this to Mario, Zelda and a crap load of mini-games....The total time occupied by the PS3 should be more then doubled. The 360 is by far the best console for games at this point, biggest reason for this of course that it's been a year longer then the other two, still that doesn't stop it from being great. I also fail to see why so many 360 fans hate the Playstation 3 since right now they're pretty much producing the same exact types of games. In fact besides Forza 2 I don't think I've played a non-multiplatform games on the 360 this year.

It is not currently about greed for MS or Sony! They BOTH are losing money for EVERY console sold. For MS to cut now they would be doing the same thing that Sony did with the 60 GB PS3 and increasing losses per console. Wait until they start producing 360's with the 65nm dies and, this being pure speculation, you may see a price drop after that. If it was ALL about greed they wouldn't have increased their warranty for RROD's to 3 years either. That increase cost them a cool $1 billion! The PS2, the most successful console to date, was US $300 retail in November of 2000. If you truly believe that the XBOX 360 and PS3 are better and much more capable consoles than the PS2, like I do, then how can you even fathom only paying $300 for a console this powerful in 2007? I don't believe that any ADULTS would! They will lower it when the time is right! Save more money or wait until then! My 2 cents.
Mine was an Atari when I was 11 or so. I Have been through 3 different Atari's, an SMS, an NES, a Game Boy, an GBA SP, an PSP, Super NES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Sega Genesis and Sega CD, PS2, XBOX, and currently a PS3! I never had a Saturn or a Dreamcast although I did know friends that had one or the other and did play them. If what you are saying is that your opinion means more than somebody else's because you have owned so many consoles I am afraid I have got a couple of consoles advantage on you! Fortunately for you I understand that isn't how it actually works! Give us a break, AoxomamoxoA! We know that you are a hater and your wonderful little rant about how many consoles you have owned is nothing but a temper tantrum. Chances are that I may eventually own an XBOX 360 and a Wii someday too because I actually do try to give all consoles an equal chance and I don't behave irrationally when my favorite one is being threatened! The only piece of garbage is the 90 nm XBOX 360! After the dies are changed to 65 nm then it will most likely be a wonderful piece of machinery. Again you are a hater! If you hate it so much don't play it but why aren't you using it to fold protein? It is one of the very best pieces of machinery made for doing so! At least you could stop being selfish and start helping somebody other than yourself that way!

You will never understand the gaming business. More games does mean you will do fine but not when your system is faulty and hasn't worked yet. Also Sony was in the same boat last year and they made it out great, also the PS3 has 15 BD exclusives coming out this year, and 80 Download-able in 7 months.
