NPD, Chart Track, Enterbrain combined global report: GTA4 on top, Wii games follow |
Listed in: News Tags: Chart Track, Enterbrain, Europe, New York, NPD
Ó

The top three marketing firms tracking sales in North America, the UK, and Japan are teaming up. While there are continuous individual reports from the NPD Group (New York), Chart Track (London), and Enterbrain (Tokyo), they'll now be combining results every month in the form of the Top Global Markets Report.
The Top Global Markets Report, as announced via press release, will be released on a per month basis and will show video game titles, the number of sales and market share - basically, the usual stuff we see in charts. What's cool now is that we get to see monthly reports as a whole, with all three regional numbers combined.
And look what we have here! The first Top Global Markets Report has already been released, and guess what's on top?
- Grand Theft Auto 4 -- 6,293,000 -- 4,711,000 -- 1,582,000 -- NA
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- 5,433,000 -- 3,539,000 -- 213,000 -- 1,681,000
- Mario Kart Wii -- 4,697,000 -- 2,409,000 -- 687,000 -- 1,601,000
- Wii Fit -- 3,604,000 -- 1,433,000 -- 624,000 -- 1,547,000
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock -- 3,475,000 -- 3,037,000 -- 412,000 -- 26,000
What you have to know here is that this first report is a year-to-date software sales total. Also, do note that GTA4 has only been released in the US and Europe, and not in Japan. Which says a lot because, even with Japan excluded from the numbers, GTA4 is still on top.
If you look at the following three games though, all three of them are Wii-exclusive titles. Which also says a lot for Brawl, Kart, and Fit because, even without a multi-platform sales push, they still remain somewhere at the top.
For now, there doesn't seem to be any sign of any software from the handheld side of the market. Maybe soon enough, as the months progress, we'll see constant upheavals popping in and out of the charts.

But Brawl's a Wii exclusive. It only draws on three markets: Wii owners in Japan, Wii owners in the US, and Wii owners in the UK.
Meanwhile, GTA4 had four markets to draw sales from: PS3 owners in the US, PS3 owners in the UK, 360 owners in the US, and 360 owners in the UK.
For Brawl to achieve such a high rank, and only draw from three markets, that's saying something. Heck, it even beat Guitar Hero, which draws on... 9 markets? No, wait... 15. Because it's for 6 platforms (PS2, PS3, 360, Wii, PC, and Mac - yes, Mac). Multiply that over the three regions, 5x3 and you get 15 markets. PS2 owners in the US, PS2 owners in the UK... etc.
Was thinking earlier if MGS4 was supposed to be up there, but maybe the late release (June) was a factor. If it had been released earlier in the year, it may have had a spot up there. ^_^

while thats clearly argueable, look at it like this.
every other system is basically just a rehash of the same old status quo, basically, make a system that does the same thing and make it shiny and modern.
nintendo pretty much rebirthed that whole concept almost single-handedly ill remind you.
now theyre taking it a step further, giving gamers what they REALLY want (whether some of them know it or not, many are still blinded by graphics and shiny objects ((dont get me wrong, it is beautiful.)))
but the wii offers more in terms of interface. more people can play it, its more accessible, (give a sony controller to a gaming novice and he'll scratch his head for two days, you know that.) on the other hand, give that same chimp a wiimote and tell them "just point at the screen and push the button!" and boom, theyre a gamer.
parents can play with their kids, kids can play with their younger siblings, grandparents can play with each other (dont block out the visual, its for your own good.) you get the idea. and the "cartoony" nature of many wii games lends itself even more to this synergy. and you know if nintendo put comparable hardware inside their magic box, it would have caused a climax in the gaming industry that would have killed the neighbors. thats power, my friends. . . nintendo power! Interface is key.
There's no point in having incredible games if they're a nightmare to control, to navigate menu's, even to get into the game itself without fault. But then we're getting into overall game design.
Fact of the matter is, with owning a fairly cheap but powerful PC (8800GT, Core2Quad, 2gb ram) I'm seeing nothing of importance from the PS3 or 360. They're just trying to be PC quality but failing, what with the lack of standard resolution (not even HD/sub-720p in some cases) despite being touted as powerhouse machines.
Them 2 consoles are great if you don't have a decent computer like you live in a poor country or something. But the Wii is the first console I've played to offer me something more than the other 2. To offer a new experience of playing (certain games), to make console gaming fun and exciting again.
Consoles... They're just underpowered PC's trying to act like media centres with poor controls, too much power usage and horrible interfaces.
