Now hiring: Xbox 360 and Wii dev teams for US Studio -Square Enix |
Ó
Remember how Square Enix spoke about the "great opportunities in North American markets" when they announced that they would be publishing Supreme Commander 2? Well, it seem that was just a foreshadowing of their next move: A US-based Square Enix Studio. The studio will be located in El Segundo, Los Angeles and right off the bat, will be working on a title based on an original IP. There are already two other Square Enix offices in the US used primarily for localization and marketing.
Square Enix is currently looking for people to staff their US branch and have posted several job listings including ones for software engineers with Xbox and Wii-specific development experience.
I realize that Squeenix has been moving toward multiplatform titles lately but I see no postings for a PlayStation dev team. Is this because they have all the developers they need for the PlayStation already or is this a sign of a deepening rift between Sony and Squeenix? Certainly, they've been quite vocal in the past of their criticism toward Sony console and have had nothing but praise for the Microsoft's 360 so far.

It really sucks because the PS3 and PSP are the best systems on the market when it comes to the consoles themselves. The PSP has been lacking in almost all support but multiconsole games altogether, though there are a few great titles pushed on the system here and there, most of which aren't sent out of Japan. For the PS3, it gets even less exclusive games than the PSP does and almost everything is multiconsole. Squaresoft sure did show their love for Microsoft when jumping ship with the exlcusive FF13, though in Japan it stayed PS3 exclusive. I guess the agreement wasn't in the US. Not only that but Sony has really been *****ing themselves. GTA4 was going to be exclusive and Sony could have thrown a little money their way to keep it that way, but because they didn't, it became multiconsole and they lost a big title that could have been exclusive. Now there have been a few other games that went from XBOX 360 to the PS3, but that it's. A few exclusives. The XBOX 360 has a higher amount of better exclusives. That's not to say the XBOX 360 or PS3 are good systems. The PS3 itself is good when it comes to hardware and what it can do. The 360 has amazing online multiplayer and playlists of music on whatever you're playing and both have decent games but the 360 has a much better games list. However, so far they both don't scratch the amount of great games on any of the systems prior. I'd recommend the 360 over the PS3 though any day. But I still do prefer the PS3 as system of choice as you don't have to worry about getting the RROD and the controller is far more comftorable.
Remember that before their "Big Announcement" at Dkwhateverthehellitwascalled. Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII were being developed solely for the PS3(obviously). Seeings how we've seen how everything was working before the "Big Announcement" through old trailers, we know that they already have a firm grasp on using the PS3's power. XIII covers their Final Fantasy Dev Team. And Versus XIII is being worked on by their Kingdom Hearts Dev Team. Unless they make a tactical game for the PS3 they have the Ivalice Alliance team for DS/PSP, and though I'm not keen on their other teams (Parasite Eve/Last Remnant etc.) I'm sure they're learning quickly. I don't see this announcement as Squeenix neglecting the PS3 as much as them saying, "We've had stronger relations with Sony over the last Decade than others because its consoles were the obvious choice in gaming, but now that the gaming population is more diverse, we need more people to work with different platforms". And don't go saying that this can't be true because Last Remnant is coming first to 360, they've already clarified the issue there was engine difficulties. Still, even if they have enough PS3 devs, they aren't really showing much love to PS3 owners like myself...I know they can't really shell out the number of games they used to(ports don't count), but come on...
After spending 10 friggin years holding a PS controller I'm going to have to say that I don't like the shape anymore and even though I skipped out on the Xbox Small controller - I found the 360 controller to be the comfiest thing I've held. And I'd also contend on the hardware front. Wasn't one of the excuses about the lack of PS3 exclusives, devs switching to 360/Wii etc, the weaker graphics in multiconsole games being that the Cell was too hard to code for? That's not good hardware. Good hardware is what is easy to work with, what is easiest to get the best results with as soon as possible... Not to wait years before multiconsole games look *the same* as their rival systems. And the PSP screen? Need I say more. The 1000 + 2000 had horrible ghosting and flickering displays when shook, and the 3000 deinterlacing problems? What about faulty analogue sticks and broken UMD drives (not a widespread problem though)? No one is perfect.
*Joke*
Sure they're hiring. If you happen to live in LA. Sadly the fact of the matter is most studios won't even look at your reel if you're not local. You could be the Rembrandt of 3D art and it wouldn't matter because they won't even look. That's why I've removed my address from my resume and website.
