In the latest Japanese sales charts that Media Create has compiled which are dated from August 28 to September 3, the Nintendo DS Lite has come out at the top, thanks to the release of its black version in Japan. It has sold a whopping eight times more than its close competitor, the Sony PSP. This is a huge thing since the number of units sold last week have almost doubled.

The number of PS2 units sold include both the "original" and the "slim" types, while the numbers in parenthesis are the total number of units that have been sold since the release of that particular title or console. For the win!

Hardware

  • Nintendo DS Lite - 228,939 (4,196,826)
  • PlayStation Portable - 27,499 (3,939,299)
  • PlayStation 2 - 22,703 (19,684,767)
  • Game Boy Advance SP - 2,751 (5,884,378)
  • Game Boy Micro - 1,791 (535,040)
  • Xbox 360 - 1,250 (140,493)
  • GameCube - 855 (4,157,561)
  • Nintendo DS - 320 (6,577,480)
  • Game Boy Advance - 22 (8,822,676)
  • Xbox - 0 (475,522)
DS Total - 10,774,306
GBA Total - 15,242,094

Moving on to the games themselves, the sales for Final Fantasy III have dropped, not because people didn't want it anymore (it DID completely sell out on its release day, afterall), but because at the moment, the limelight is shining on a non-Nintendo game, Phantasy Star. Ninty fans can still breathe easy, though, since the top ten is till dominated by Nintendo games.

If i didnt know the capablities of a 1.5 psp than i would have sold my psp for a ds lite cuz my 2.5 psp was booorringg. A 1.5 psp is better than a DS but if it was a normal upgraded psp is kinda not fun.

» DS with flashcart > DSL > 1.5 PSP > 'Normal' PSP

Whats the point of a 1.5 PSP when the games on the system aren't very good? With a DS flashcart and a DS you can get homebrew/emulators and you can play with a vastly superior selection of games. Without all that firmware hacking nonsense.

DS outsells PSP 8 to 1 in japan this week.

DS lite which has only been out since may has outsold the PSP.

Its not a fair comparison... Not fair on their part I might add. Sony's found their niche. And that is pretty much a boy or girls ability to admire Madden.

Welcome to the handheld gaming ghetto.

Wow! The Japanese sure do love their Nintendo!

To #5, I don't quite see how a DSL w/ Flashcart beats a 1.5 PSP. The PSP homebrew community is so much more active, plus there is a much wider selection of emulators (with much higher speeds!) Could you better explain your view?

I also much perfer the PSPs game selection to that of the DS. Note the use of opinion in that sentance, whereas you stated your idea as a fact.

what's #5 doing here?

1.5 psp >>>>> whatever you said don't care

» psp vs ds

to #5 and #8.. everyone seems to have their opinions on so called superior game library, etc.. I'm 23, I have no interest in anything nintendo has to offer.. thats why I went and bought and frequently use my psp.

I find many people on the net look at the japanese numbers, nintendo's for instance and predict that the psp and ps3 are dead, etc..

One thing I've seen though is how weird the japanese can be.. niche games like brain whatever and those animalgames seem to be keeping nintendo on top there, with the big support of their already overused mario brand.

i think it's funny that 0 xbox systems were sold

to #6 - you think about buying nintendo stock now? you're about 23 years late, but it's the thought that counts.

the reason you don't care about the sales is that your system of choice is not on top
