Nintendo gains more share, about to surpass Sony

She sure looks happy about the Wii - Image 1Earlier today, Nintendo left Panasonic maker Matsushita in the dust as the company driven by its dual-screen handheld and waving sticks closed the gap against competitor Sony.

Ninty increased its market capitalisation to ¥6.30 trillion, running past Matsushita's 6.23 trillion and nearing Sony's 6.64 trillion. These world leaders in electronics have sales eight times bigger than Nintendo, but the Wii and DS are obviously enough to stay on track.

During the last couple of years, the folks responsible for the PS3 earned 72% increase in shares. It fades in comparison to Nintendo, which experienced shares growth four-fold during the same period.

KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide comments:

Nintendo is a market leader in everything it does now, which is basically the handheld as well as console gaming market. We haven't seen Nintendo being a market leader in both products for over a decade. It shows what a fantastic market position Nintendo has at the moment in its industry.

Sounds good, considering that the GameCube failed hard last consoles race. Not saying that Sony is having a hard time, but let's hope everyone learns from Ninty's model which appears to be very effective. Affordable and fun games for everyone? We're in!

» Sony don't need to worry about it

Nothing's going to get rid of them any time soon, they could probably survive two bad gensm they've got their other things to hold them up.

It's understandable though. The Wii and DS are cheap, great fun, and appeal to more than just the average gamer.

But people complaining about it need to remember, the PS3's going to last 2 gens, not one. It's going to get the high sales again, though not as high as last gen, it will be a very strong force at the start of next gen with a whole gen of back catalogue, desiged to work for it.

LMFAO. No, it won't last 2 gens there will always be a new one. Sony is failing hard right now, until they have a price drop. And if they can afford to fail 2 gens, I'm sure microsoft could fail 100 and still have cash left for another one. Nintendo is creaming the PS3 sales, that's the only reason the stocks went up. They launched at the same time, and the wii is nearly ready to triple the PS3 sales. It's already doubled them. It's all about the price.

by James - 2007-06-20 11:54
» Er

Also developers don't make games for a console that isn't selling i.e PS3. They are more likely to makes games for the wii since it has a huge stock on the market. The 360 is a good example, it is selling, well...has 10.5 Mil+ units sold so developers know that they are definitely going to have some success. Game designers don't give much ***** about the consoles, they look for which will give them the most profit. And ps3 doesn't allow that. One since has a low amount of units sold, secondly, it takes a lot of money to make a decent game. Three what else can you have on the ps3 that you can't on the 360?

by Darsh - 2007-06-20 12:03
» But...

While the games are affordable, few of them would be considered fun. The rest are PS2 and Gamecube ports.

» Games that can't be done on 360

Ever heard of Blu Ray. The PS3 is ahead of its time on many aspects, but you must surely realize that multiple DVD's are right around the corner. Games that can't be done on 360: MGS4, FF13, Lair and Heavenly Sword to name a few. You get what you pay for. PS3 is expensive, but at least it can run it all day without breadking down time and time again.

Wii is a last gen system, comparing it in the same breath as 360 and PS3 is highly amusing. Just because a system is realeased alongside of next gen systems doesn't make it so. I'm not knocking Wii, but it lacks the power of the original X Box and is less then half the price of PS3, of couse Wii is outselling PS3. A new Nintendo system will be out b4 Wii even halfes PS2 sales numbers

360 is cool, but I'm not into cheaply made products. If it weren't for 360's breaking down left and right, I'd probally have one by now. Talk to me about console reliability when the red rings are no longer a nuisance.

» Just a flame war post

This really means nothing...Nintendo's position wasn't exactly stellar when the GCN ended so it is no wonder that they are going up with the launch of the Wii. However, you have to realize that Sony has to do something quick in order to survive this war. They can't rely on Blu-Ray, they need to drop the price.

As for the IQ remarks...They might be the stupidest things I've ever heard and could only be though up by a Fanboy, and by they sound of it, a Sony one.

To say that the Wii is not next gen is insane. It is irrelevant how you define "next gen" it is all about what systems sell the most out of the three current consoles. Besides, it would be pretty embarrassing to see the PS3 lose to a system that isn't next gen, no?

by Quixand - 2007-06-20 16:20
» no it's not embarrassing

cause Sony has it's own last gen that has been kicking ass for a decade.

but you don't hear me saying that the 360 should be embarrassed cause they're still getting owned by a last gen console that has no hype whatsoever, no new innovation, and has a successor already.

the 360 shouldn't be embarrassed cause it is still paying its dues to success and that goes with the PS3 too... what happened to the wii is a freak phenomenon in the industry... it will go down the books as a special case... thus no comparison will prove just if made against the wii.

by The Unbiased One - 2007-06-20 18:52
» Very true

I suppose one could look at it in that case, but again, it all depends on your definition of "next gen".

Funny thing is, nobody was ready to deal with Nintendo on top. With no one to really compete with in terms of the control style and price the Wii is going to have it easy for at least 5 years. Their popularity pushed their market share basically. PS3 and 360 aren't doomed it's just that the Wii is basically untouchable. Also the people who still insist that the Wii is stupid and that everyone who buys it is stupid are really showing their insecurity by attacking something thats doing well for no reason. Just suck it up and admit that you were wrong. It makes more sense to say you're an idiot than to claim that the whole world is stupid.

So because it can't heave th same graphical power , iot's a worse console? Dam fanboys, it's a shame sales Ndidn't agree with you in the DsVs Psp argument , and they certainly aren't heading that way either in the Wii Vs Ps3 Vs 360 argument either.

It's funny you would sasy tyhe wi is not next gen , when it's the only console changing the way anything is done.

People have made multidisc games before, so larger dsic space is a moot point , let alone the fact developers don't actually want to have to use all that space.

by photoboy - 2007-06-20 22:46
» Oh dear...

the old "it's got teh blooray" spiel eh? And why does the Wii having weaker graphics make it last gen? Sod what "gen" a system is, it's all about having interesting games and the 360 and Wii both have that at the moment. The PS3 has some good stuff coming but that's not till next year. By the time those games are out the 360 and Wii will have seen price cuts and will have large libraries of games. Sony are going to struggle really hard to keep up this gen.

by Hellraiser - 2007-06-21 02:24

The PS2 still sells better than the 360 because it's cheap and has lots of games. The key to success in the gaming world.

It's the reason the 360 is still kicking the PS3's ass, and the reason it will continue to do so years down the road.

If the PS3 could ever surpass the 360, it will be in the 360's last years, when the very last games are being released, when the next XBOX is released and going strong.

By that time $ony will be planning some new stupid media format, purple ray, UV ray, whatever and some excuse you need it with the PS4. Everyone will be sick of sony and want them to die.

by PS3 Fantard - 2007-06-21 02:30
» .

The only PS3 game that can't be done on the 360 is Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Nobody would buy it because it's a crappy port that everyone has played before, it only has minimal graphical improvments, and people can play it on the 360 anyway.

The rest is blu ray BS sony told you. Final Fantasy is the only game that could require more than one disc. Grow a brain fantard. What are those games supposed to need suxaxis tilt sensing? Shut up.

Metal Gear 4 will come to the 360 because it's a total waste being PS3 exclusive. Konami will be in the poorhouse spending all that money on development to sell to such a tiny user base.

by Datnizzle - 2007-06-21 02:31
» missed the boat

Sony and M$ should have just released wii-mote-like controllers for the ps2 and xbox, it seems people were fine with the graphics from last gen. Nintendo is racking in the dough, people are saying the wii will fizzle, but I don't know. Every christmas is going to be a surge for it, at that price parents will buy it for their 10 year old. And since halo and gta don't come out for it parents feel like it's a kid console. What maybe happening is that the market is splitting- young gamers (which nintendo owns) and Older gamers (over 20) being fought over by Sony and M$.

by The Teej - 2007-06-21 02:32
» What the hell are you on about, SF EX?

Wii IS a current generation system, you moron. Wii has MUCH more power then an XBOX. It's people like you that look at JUST the numbers and go "Hey, that number is lower then that other one there, so it HAS to be lower in power!"

Go take a high school course on computing and learn about different architectures. The Wii has a PPC Architecture and compared to XBOX's x86 Architecture, it's much more effecient. It can pull a lot more out of the bag.

Wii games right now (not all, mind, but that's because of lazy developers and PS2 ports) look pretty much just as good as XBOX games, and the Wii is only in its infancy. Come 2008, 2009, 2010 and beyond, Wii games will look MUCH better then the XBOX games ever did.

Of course it is half the price of the PS3. Hell, at that absolutely ridiculous price tag, it's probably over double the price of 75% consoles ever released.

» Exactly

The market is splitting. Nintendo is catering to the non-gamers and is having much success doing so, although when it comes to hardcore gamers, Xbox 360 has them all. Sony is having so much trouble right now with their overpriced Blu-ray player/PS3, they might as well scrap it and design a cheaper system that caters to everyone, and has a more reasonable price tag -- kind of like the Wii!

» this is the turth and read this to understand

let me tell u guys one thing microsoft is going to lose since there consoles are not being sold just being made. i mean ppl who bought the thing have at least returned it once and then they get another one. Let me tell u guys whts happening look microsoft released xbox one year earlier so wht happed during tht was in making anything fast or producing it fast u have to ignore the quality of the product. tht why u can see only the xbox has the ring of death because when the ps3 was about to release the found out a problem and it took them a year to solve anyways when ever u return the xbox they r constantly producing new ones. but they have to be givin out for free due to nobody buys them but only exchanges them. thts one reason they had to release the elite version its only a little bit more stable then the other ones as it was made later. so when they show u the sales its how much they produced and "gave"not "sold" keep tht in mind.

by Folding Junkie! - 2007-06-21 16:12
» Run that by me again!

"When it comes to hardcore gamers, XBOX 360 has them all."

All of them? Really? Wow, you guys are cool! Don't forget to tell all of the PS3 owners and nearly everyone in Japan currently buying next-gen systems that they aren't hardcore gamers.

"Sony is having so much trouble now with their overpriced BD player/PS3"

Your entitled to have an opinion. I disagree, but you may think as you wish. Just remember that you didn't buy it, I did! Maybe for you it is overpriced.

"They might as well scrap it and design a cheaper system that caters to everyone and has a cheaper price tag like the Wii."

You mean that is how you sell a console? You make it for everyone and then you sell it for cheap? Then what the hell was M$ thinking when they made the 360 elite, put a $480 price tag on it, and started selling it to hardcore gamers with large wallets. What the hell market were they catering to when they designed the HD-DVD attachment and sold it for $200 on top of the 360's purchase price?

It sounds to me like you want a PS3 but can't afford it or you are like some of the people I work with that had to run out and buy an XBOX 360 as soon as it was available so they could go home and play it on their 25" SDTV's. To them neither BD nor HD-DVD's are worth the money. I am not one of those people! Are you one of them?

BTW, if you can't see the shift in downloadable games on XBOX live AND PSN towards games that appeal to more retro, casual, or busy (maybe even all of those in one) gamers then you haven't been paying attention.

All three major parties are trying to attract casual gamers, IMHO that is the biggest reason Sony implemented Sixasis support, with games like Super Rub-A-Dub, Flow, and the XBLA service. The only difference that Sony and M$ have for them is they DO care about the hardcore gamers.

The Wii is an unique system and can be fun. It is also cheap and technically, due to it's release date, is a next-gen system. But the hardware is far from next-gen hence it's low price and amazing sales figures. Nintendo got it right this time around with the DS and Wii due to innovative features on both. I owned a DS but the hardcore gamer in me won and I traded it in to Blockbuster and purchased a PSP. The hardcore gamer in me won in this race too so I purchased an PS3.

Nobody should be touting the Wii's power as a next-gen system. PPC or not it is still less than 1 GHz rated clock speed. RISC will not make up for that much deficiency especially when compared to the three cores of the 360 or the main PPE and seven SPE's at the disposal of the cell processor. Both the PS3 and 360 also use PPC cores both rated above 3 GHz. The Wii is much closer to an XBOX than it is to an PS3 or 360.

My guess is that Nintendo will sell far more consoles than M$ or Sony but they won't be getting any of my money this time around. I have all that I need with one console. Save your comments about lack of games, stupid BD, etc... I already said I have ALL that I NEED already. Better games, which WILL come with time, are only icing on the cake.

Have a great day fanboys! You all suck! Don't reply unless you can bring a big boy argument to the table. That means real debate not fanboy bulls**t! Until then have fun in homeroom!
