PSP - Image 1 Today, New Zealand. Tomorrow, the world?

Just in case you're a bit lost on what we're talking about, Japan may be DS territory, but in the land made famous by director Peter Jackson and The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the Pop culture arena, that's not the case. Apparently, the PSP and the aging console, PS2 top the New Zealand market, in terms of the October 30 - December 31, 2006 sales.

Gameplanet reports that according to the GFK sales tracking, the PS2 has 70.9% of the console market at their side while the PSP pocketed 73% of the handheld market. Hey, wherever it occurs, success is still success. General manager of sales and marketing of Sony Computer Entertainment, New Zealand, Warwick Light said:

With new platforms on the market, we stand by our belief that the gaming category is a long-haul race. The continued support and innovation of the PlayStation 2 platform shows that a console can enjoy a long lifespan and continue to grow its appeal to new audiences. Don't think that with the launch of our next generation console we will be forgetting about PlayStation 2 - far from it.

No surprise there, the PS2 has always been an overachiever of sorts. Hopefully, the PSP could follow the sales reputation of the PS2, not only in New Zealand but in other countries as well.

WOOOOOOH!!NEW ZEALAND ROCKS!

by Casua1ty - 2007-01-19 20:20
» Well, Duh!

Im a kiwi and all of my friends have psps and the ds is hated. But hardly any people know about homebrew so they think im mad because im downgrading my psp.

by pp - 2007-01-19 20:28
» sounds about right

I'm from NZ and that sounds pretty accurate. As far as NZ is concerned nintendo barely even exist. I don't think i've ever met anyone with a gamecube (did nintendo even bother selling them here!?), xbox does slightly better but we're essentially a land of sony fanboys

by c - 2007-01-19 20:48
» .

I know a few people with a DS, more with PSP's though, and two people with a gamecube

by Casua1ty - 2007-01-19 21:14
» Haha

I only know 2 pepz with ds and none with gamecube.

Shows how many NZers have PSPs (incl. myself), i mean a high majority of the people who posted are from NZ. But yeah, i was actually quite surprised to find that the PSP actually is doing well in NZ. Nintendo hasn't existed between N64 (possibly GBA) and Wii pretty much.

I mean, we are the country full of sheeps aren't we?

» In your Dreams People

I'm from NZ and god you lot must be living in fairy land. The PS2 is way on its way out. Every second person I know now has a Wii and if they have anything else its either an X-Box or 360. And PSP is laughable - there is a hell of alot more psps on the shelf (not selling)than NDS's. Alot of people are now regretting PSP purchases as the games are way to expensive. I have both and I now only buy Nintendo products as the average is about $50 NDS as opposed to PSP $100 minimum for anything half decent. No-one I know is going to waste their money on a stupid PS3 that's for sure. I know people who work at five different games suppliers and they all swear by Nintendo now as the company that's making its comeback bigtime. I'm sorry to see Sony fail as I like them also but they have missed the boat this time with PSP and PS3.

by elcius - 2007-01-19 22:10
» yep

in our house (12 kids, 2 adults), we have 3 ps2's, 2 psp's, and several gameboys (for the little ones).

and rebekah, where do you get your games, because your getting ripped off, i got MGS:PO's for $45-NZD at trademe :].

by Rebekah Savage - 2007-01-19 22:57
» I'm not getting ripped off actually!!!!!

Hello, did I say I was actually buying at that price? No, I was stating the average retail stores price not an online auction site's prices like Trademe. I usually buy my goods at a quarter of the retail price because I look for bargains both online and at stores like EB where I've bought game's like Skys of Arcadia for $22 on Gamecube as opposed to the price for the same product which is currently on auction on trademe for about $88 as I recall - check yourself. This is not to say I don't buy games there though it is alot cheaper for alot of games but not all. But unlike you and I elcius not everyone has the net and internet banking or credit card. Please think before you criticise my comments. I am not a Nintendo FanGirl but I am also not a Sony Fangirl either. I realise that the PS2 has had great success and has had alot of success over Christmas 2006/07 because of price nothing more nothing less. But how many statistics have been taken for Wii sales in NZ for the same time - probably zip as up until now the previous company doing marketing for Nintendo in NZ was absolutely ***** hence the relatively small sales previously of gamecubes. But this doesn't mean that all things stay the same forever the Wii here and in Australia as far as I know has blown the sales records for consoles out of the water for the four weeks up to Xmas only now have stocks started being replaced because of its huge success here in NZ and abroad - In 4 Weeks Nintendo has sold almost half the quantity the X-Box360 has sold in one year. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! How's that for statistics!!! Also if the PS3 is so great how come the CEO of Valve has called it a disaster????

by KirbySS - 2007-01-19 23:40
» .

I really can't see what on earth Gabe Newell would know about consoles. I mean, he obviously doesn't play the Wii, due to the whole "being a huge lard-ass" thing (think of Krew from Jak 2: Renegade).. But you can't really judge a console that's been out for two months like that. Same as calling the Wii a success. Neither have even been out a year, so it's pretty stupid to say things like that.

73% of kiwis are dumb *****s. i got get hell away from this hole

» psp success

er to your reply kiwi, the only dumbarse here is u, im a nzer, and im *****ed if i understand how nintendo still survives, probally through selling games that only kids can enjoy, (so they force parents to buy them), sony makes good gadgets ,yet there stupid in relizing the full worth of what they have made, freedom is the reason, people dont want to be forced to have a brady bunch game machine they wanna do what they want, with what they pay for. kiwis know best,... wii will be like eye toy and be a phase in my opinion, xbox360 needs a lesson in overcharging , you pay $500 bucks for a x360 ,$80 - $120 for a game, then the cheek of scratching money to actually play it online? that include the cost of broadband ,mabye bill gates will pay my internet bill hmmm dont think so.

by xnjcx2008 - 2007-01-20 01:51
» PSP...

The only way the psp is going to survive is it starts seeing NEW games, instead of EXACT PORTS of ps2 games. The games they port are not even great on ps2 to begin with, its about time the developers start giving us fresh faces. Although, I wouldn't find it surprising if they thought it was already too late to save psp... Piracy is eating up psp and there's nothing Sony can do to stop it.

GG HF, psp.

by WarLord - 2007-01-20 06:43
» I don't buy that

Ports aren't the psp's problem, it's most likely the price. DS is cheap, but has just as many ports and clones as PSP. Look at the top selling DS games: Pokemon, Mario, Nintendogs and a couple puzzle games. If consumers wanted fresh faces, those games wouldn't be in the top 10.

I haven't played a DS, but I think people like it most because the game developers sacrifice graphics for content. The games last longer than your typical psp game since gfx doesn't take up too much space. ( I beleive some XBox owners complain that the games may look good, but don't last long enough.) Not only that, but DS has good multiplayer support.

Despite that, I still love psp because the games match my overall preference. (And homebrew of course)

» ^^^

Interesting how you are saying something but the general sales say the contrary. Typical fanboy characteristic.

by end of consol warz - 2007-01-20 12:19
» wow

out of all the next gen consol, xbox360 is the worst. Wii is fun to play with, ps3 not only has super graphics but also acts as an universal home entertainment, but xbox360 is primary just a game consol; there's nothing special about it.

by Rebekah S - 2007-01-20 12:32
» I'd say a little lower but close :)

Sorry to say I have to agree somewhat, I mean if Most NZérs are smart then how come our Health, Justice, Education and Employment, and Political system are f***ed.

Also in reply to rd261 the statistics u are going by come from one online store as opposed to mine which are not only from five different sources in NZ they are also true of global statistics which show the PS3 at the bottom of the foodchain. The Price and the fact that the PS3 is so hard to program for will be its overall downfall which statistically speaking is shown by past global trends. Look at the VHS/Beta War - Beta by Sony was a much better product but who won - VHS did. Enough said. I like Sony but they need to listen to their customer base before going off at a tangent to be successful.

» what a fanboy....or girl!

Rebekah savage is truly a mad chick and the most ridiculous fanboy in aussie land! All she said is nowhere close to being true and I have no idea where she gets her info. No one I know plays DS, and all my friends play PSP. And with the prices she gave? PSP twice as expensive? I'd like some of what she is puffing on...not! What a friggin fanboy. I can understand being a fanboy, but giving false statements when we see the numbers right in our eyesite? Gimme a break, mate!

by yeah rite! - 2007-01-20 13:03
» don't think so.....

You need to get off the stuff, girl! You're not a nintendo fangirl......ha!All that you state is not only untrue, but not even believable. Not even a good try. Go back to the nintendo forums and let them know you have failed them miserably!

by DS sucks - 2007-01-20 13:07
» it really, really sucks!!!

a DS lite as a gift for xmas from a girlfriend and ,even though I will eventually forgive her, I will not forget it! $129 could buy alot of awesome PSP stuff, but I guess she tried her best...wait...no she didnt. I think instead of cheating on me, this was the god-awefullest thing she could think of doing! DS sucks, man. The games are for 7 year old girls.

Good on ya kiwis put Nintendo to shame. Hey, you can't be the best console in every country!

Rebekah Savage stick it. Ya D&^# sucka!

by Rebkah S - 2007-01-20 22:30
» Sheep - Yeah I believe there are a few here

Have half of you actually checked the statistics before you comment - No I see u haven't. I'm a sucker - How when I own Both Nintendo products and Sony's PS2 and PSP and state the facts that are present in stores such as EB Game's, The Gamestation, ***** Smith Electronics, K-Mart just to name a few. I said I Nintendo products - Maybe I should state a few of the better game titles you won't find with Sony - Twilight Princess, Windwaker, The new and improved Resident Evil Series (allowances made for RE4 which was released a year later on PS2), Metroid Prime 1, 2 and soon 3. NDS games for seven year olds - So RE Deadly Silence, Metroid Prime Hunters are in that category are they?????

Titles I do like on PSP - Locoroco, Need 4 Speed Most Wanted 5.1.0, Titles on PS2 The Metal Gear Solid series, Rachettt and Clank series - it was very funny. So I'm a FanGirl who doesn't know her stuff eh??? Dreams are free. My Preference currently is Nintendo for main console but actually as a handheld I like the PSP for its homebrew and emulation abilities. So what if you don't believe the statistics and comments printed in your own PSP forum by this sites ops, not my problem, I wanted to see if I would get a bite and I succeeded very well - so who's the sucker now eh!!!!! Both Sony and Nintendo have made their mistakes but they have both made great achievements too and no-one can deny that (unless they've got their head up their own ass like darockman2) Well I'm off now say what you like now cause I'm blowin this joint - I Win HA HA HA!!!!

by xche78x - 2007-01-20 23:58
» just funny

why say a console is stupid?

specially ps3 which is something more powerful than your pc i bet!

do you even like console games?

stupid are for those people that cant accept the fact that we are moving to new technology. lets embrace the toys people, multi core processors, 4d graphics, full + extreme HD resolutions, unique controls. i believe that we should live our lives to the fullest and enjoy whatever there is.

.... and that's your opinion (irrelevant one too).

by metalspector - 2007-01-21 12:42
» actually...

a console is stupid, I mean my computer costed me 600 dollars (from the year 2002 and bough on the year 2004) and it's more powerfule than the three consoles including the ps3, in fact I just had to buy a new graphics card which costed me around 120 dollars and my computer can play games with higher resolution than the ps3 and since it's processor is more than 3.5 ghz it runs faster and better, also don't forget that all computer games (except MMORPG's which are for depressed people) have free online play. Also you can easily download mods for your computer games, you can't imagine all I have done to Elder Scrolls (use around 100 mods at a time with no lag). Also my computer can do many things consoles can do.

by metalspector - 2007-01-21 12:44
» hmm

now everyone seemsto be from New Zealand if they say so, in fact I think I'm from New Zealand now
